The Numbers are a group within the Beasts Pirates made up of artificially produced ancient giants. Originally created on Punk Hazard, they were deemed to be unsuccessful and were eventually bought by Kaidou. They later resided on Onigashima and served as combatants for the crew.
Appearance
According to Big Mom, the Numbers are failed recreations of the ancient giants, a subgroup of the giant race whose members are notably far taller than typical giants and possess a pair of horns on their heads. Why exactly they are considered failures is uncertain. The Numbers have been noted to be just as large as the ancient giant Oars, who at 67 meters stood three times taller than a typical normal giant; they also all possess horns. However, unlike natural ancient giants seen so far, the Numbers possess varying degrees of animal-like physical traits. While Hatcha and Kunyun appear very much like average tall humans, other members possess traits such as a long neck and a snout-like nose that make them look more like animals than humans. Fuga, in particular, has a lower body of a horse's, making him a centaur, though this is due to him having eaten a Horse SMILE. All of the Numbers seen so far have very sharp teeth and fangs except Hatcha, whose teeth are rounded, and Kunyun and Inbi, whose teeth are mostly straight except her fangs.
Members
The Numbers consists of ten members. Each member is themed around a specific number, with the first part of their name containing the kanji for that number, and their speech patterns starting with it as well.
Behaviors
The Numbers are rather monstrous creatures with a very low level of intelligence, which more resembles that of a child or even animal than an adult. Notably, they have yet to be shown speaking words; the only sounds they have been shown making are their unique laughs which play off their names. They appear to lack any form of coordination, as they merely laughed individually during Queen's Golden Kagura song without any sort of united harmony. The Numbers are infamous for their alcohol consumption, and many of the members seen during the Fire Festival were shown to be extremely drunk. Overall, the Numbers do appear to be loyal to Kaidou and make the effort to confront his enemies; however, the combination of their brutish and drunken tendencies makes them extremely prone toward inflicting collateral damage. They will charge toward and attack enemies wildly, even in crowded areas where they are almost certain to strike allies with their massive attack radius. It has been indicated that it is extremely difficult for the other Beasts Pirates to get the Numbers under control, with only Scratchmen Apoo so far showing some form of taming ability by using his Devil Fruit to play music. The Numbers are also shown to be attracted to machinery like vehicles and robots much as if they were toys, as shown when Jaki held onto the Brachio Tank V and Hatcha chased after the General Franky. A child from Hakumai told another child that they would be eaten by the Numbers if spotted, but it is unknown whether this is the truth or merely a rumor.
Abilities
Thanks to their enormous size, the Numbers possess immense physical power and can overwhelm average-sized people with great ease; Jaki was shown lifting the Brachio Tank V one-handed with no effort. They have been stated to have laid waste to countless cities, and when all together, they pose a great threat to even experienced fighters who can take on giants. All of the Numbers have so far been seen wielding massive spiked clubs which themselves dwarf normal-sized people; some of the clubs are very similar in appearance to Kaidou's kanabo, while others more resemble morning stars. Given these clubs' tremendous size and the Numbers' strength, a single swing is capable of wreaking substantial damage and taking out multiple victims at once. Unlike other gigantification test subjects, particularly Caesar Clown's which were doomed to die in a few years, it appears that the Numbers gained the same long lifespans as giants; this is evidenced by Hatcha being 188 years old. However, despite their size and their power, they apparently lack high durability and resistance, as five members were easily defeated after being hit by only one attack from their enemies, although these enemies consisted of Franky, Monkey D. Luffy, X Drake, Yamato, and Brook all of whom are very strong and skilled fighters. As indicated by Scratchmen Apoo, their combat ability appears to be diminished while they are drunk.
History
Past
The Numbers were subjects in an experiment on Punk Hazard to recreate the ancient giant race. Given Hatcha's age, the experiment likely occurred over a century ago. The experiment was considered a failure, but Kaidou then bought the Numbers over 20 years before the present day. They came to reside on Onigashima and join Kaidou's crew, the Beasts Pirates. 20 years ago immediately after Kouzuki Oden's execution, Jaki chased the fleeing Nine Red Scabbards on their way back to Oden Castle. As Inuarashi and Nekomamushi began blaming each other for Oden's fate, he took advantage of their distraction and caught them both in its bare hands, forcing Denjiro and Ashura to turn back in order to aid them and slow down the pursuing Beasts Pirates.
Wano Country Saga
Wano Country Arc
After spending some time away, the Numbers and Scratchmen Apoo returned to Wano Country in order to partake in Kaidou's Fire Festival, and were granted passage through the waterfall to Hakumai. The Numbers were later present during the Beasts Pirates party in Onigashima. When the Beasts Pirates spotted enemies Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro among their number, they began to attack them; Hatcha proceeded to get involved in the action despite his crewmates trying to stop him. Later, the Nine Red Scabbards unleashed an ambush against Kaidou, causing an all-out war to break out between the Beasts Pirates and the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance.
Nangi went with a platoon of Beasts Pirates to aid Kaidou against his attackers, while the trio of Jaki, Goki, and Juki rampaged inside the Skull Dome, with Jaki ending up getting blasted point-blank by Franky's Radical Beam when he saw him holding the Brachio Tank V. Goki attempted to attack the samurai, but his club got cut in half by Zoro, and he got taken out by Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Kong Gun while Juki was defeated by X Drake, who at that point had been outed as a traitor by the Beasts Pirates. Hatcha managed to sober up, but immediately began chasing after Franky after he combined to form the Iron Pirate. Shortly thereafter, Nangi was defeated by the Mink Tribe. Hatcha managed to catch up to Franky, just as the two reached Yamato's location, along with Kouzuki Momonosuke, Shinobu, and Sasaki with his Armored Division.
Hatcha's attempt to smash Franky resulted in a hole opening up under the floorboard, allowing Yamato to escape with Momonosuke and Shinobu, and as a thank you, used Narikabura to defeat Hatcha. Kunyun later joined Black Maria in fighting Nico Robin and Brook, though Kunyun's attempt to fool Robin by masquerading as Jaguar D. Saul failed and she was struck by her. She later chased after the two of them alongside Black Maria but was held back by Brook, and after Robin defeated Black Maria, Brook defeated Kunyun with Phrase d'armes: Orchestra. Elsewhere, three of the Numbers, Inbi, Fuga, and Zanki, were eating in the Cave Chamber while Apoo tried to convince Drake to team up with him to prevail over the winner of the battle. They continued to eat even when Drake refused Apoo's offer and started attacking him, but when Yamato made his way inside to try and reach the weapons cache, Fuga followed after him. Apoo mobilized Inbi and Zanki and chased after Yamato, with Drake pursuing them. Fuga caught up to Yamato and agreed to help Yamato. Yamato wanted Fuga to fight Rokki, who had been guarding the weapons cache the entire time. Fuga obliged, breaking down the gate at the same time, and remained behind to hold Rokki down while Yamato continued on. Meanwhile, Apoo and Drake encountered and began fighting the CP0 agents Guernika and Maha, who were pursuing Robin. Maha defeated Zanki after Apoo and Inbi fled from the fight.
Trivia
The Numbers follow the Beasts Pirates' card-based naming scheme as a deck of cards has ten number cards for each suit. Like Kaidou, the Numbers have numerous similarities to oni, which are well-known ogre-like yokai found in Japanese folklore. These similarities include gigantic size, horns on their heads, wielding kanabo clubs, prominent fangs, and solely wearing loincloth-like apparel. Three of the Number silhouettes in their debut in Chapter 954 can be identified as Inbi, Goki, and Jaki; however, there is a silhouette of a tall Number with straight horns and a pronounced underbite whose identity remains uncertain. The only Number with a pronounced underbite is Fuga; however, his horns are a different shape and his height and body type do not match the silhouette.
Nangi possesses the greatest amount of similarities to the silhouette, although he does not really have an underbite and has a thicker body. Six of the Numbers—Zanki, Jaki, Goki, Rokki, Nangi and Juki—possess the kanji for oni (鬼?) in their names. The other four—Inbi, Fuga, Hatcha and Kunyun—each have kanji with different meanings. The Numbers may have been inspired by the "Wild Things", from the 1963 children's book Where The Wild Things Are. Indeed, both the numbers and the Wild Things are monstrous creatures with long horns and claws, who like to party. In the original picture book, the Wild Things also are ten in number. Juki especially looks like Goat Boy, while Nangi and Jaki are similar to Moische and another unnamed Wild Thing. Some of the Numbers have received unique introduction boxes which are rounded and have horns at the sides, thus mimicking their head shapes, although this is inconsistent among them.
