Oni Child Yamato’s Golden Harvest Surrogate Pilgrimage, Vol. 5: “Hiyori and O-Toko are packing me a bento lunch!”

Short Summary

As various places throughout the world react to Dr. Vegapunk’s announcement of Joy Boy, Vegapunk reveals that back then the Twenty Kingdoms formed the World Government to counter Joy Boy leading to a war. Meanwhile Stussy refuses to leave Egghead due to Vegapunk’s death and Zoro and Jinbe continue to head to the Thousand Sunny. Vegapunk reveals that the war ended with Joy Boy’s defeat, but the war left permanent damage as the water level throughout the world rose 200 meters and the islands people live on are pieces of those continents. Vegapunk then reveals the cause of this are Ancient Weapons which still exist and waiting to be used which suggests the war never came to an end.

Long Summary

In the Flower Capital, the people of Wano are listening to Dr. Vegapunk’s message, having found a Den Den Mushi among Orochi’s possessions. Momonosuke is surprised to learn that Joy Boy was a pirate just like Luffy, and Kin’emon asks him if he knows what the scientist is talking about. Elsewhere, at the G-4 Marine base, the Fake Straw Hat Crew (now impersonating the Kid Pirates), who are imprisoned, are talking about how “Kid” could easily take Joy Boy considering that he is dead now. Dr.

Vegapunk’s message continues, as he reveals he only deciphered a handful of Poneglyphs, but from them he was able to ascertain that they tell the history of a great war in the ancient past. During that time, Joy Boy fought against the founders of the World Government, which back then were simply known as the “Allied Powers,” made up of twenty separate kingdoms. As he speaks, Mars starts using his Supreme King Haki to incapacitate the various Den Den Mushi inside the lab to stop the broadcast, but it continues to play. Dr. Vegapunk says that the alliance these kingdoms formed was the only way they could oppose Joy Boy and the faction to which he belonged.

However, he does not know why this conflict happened, nor does he side with either of the combatants, but what he does know was that the war was a clash of two different ideologies. He then brings back up the kingdom Joy Boy lived in and how advanced it was, saying that the weapons it created during that conflict are beyond his ability to replicate, which is where the problem lay. Within the Labophase, Edison contacts Stussy and tells her to lower the Frontier Dome’s barrier and escape. She refuses because she still needs to help the Straw Hats escape, but Edison tells her it is useless against the Five Elders, and in any case, they have done all they can for the crew. Speaking of, Jinbe is still heading for the ship carrying Zoro, the former apologizing to Nami for taking so long.

She informs them to hurry up because the Marines’ ships are starting to blockade the northeast coast. Stussy is relieved to hear they have a chance to make it out as Edison demands she flee, but Stussy tells Edison now that the Stella is dead, she feels she has no purpose anymore. At the coast, Nusjuro breaks free of the giants’ grip and tries to cut down the giant Bonney, but Franky gets her out of the way of his slash attack that cuts off the ship’s helm, just as Bonney changes back to normal. Dr. Vegapunk continues saying that Joy Boy’s defeat marked the end of the Void Century as Nusjuro jumps high into the air and unleashes a powerful slash attack that cuts the Labophase in half, causing all of the captive Cipher Pol agents and Seraphim to fall down, which the Marines see and try to rescue.

Dr. Vegapunk then says that the world never recovered from the aftermath of the war. Dr. Vegapunk acknowledges how difficult it is to travel from place to place in the world because the sea is treacherous, and it compels people to choose to live and die at their place of birth rather than explore new cultures. However, he states that it was not like that 1000 years ago; a cataclysmic ecological disaster occurred during the Void Century that sank the ancient world into the ocean, and the islands people live on are nothing more than fragments of those landmasses.

Several people around the world do not believe Dr. Vegapunk’s story, though some do consider it to be serious. Of course, Dr. Vegapunk admits it is tough to rely on his word alone, but he thinks this change in the world is what caused the Void Century as within that time frame, the sea level rose by 200 meters. However, the big question regarding how such flooding occurred still remains. Dr. Vegapunk knows that the people’s first guess is that it was a natural disaster, but in all his research, he found nothing indicating that. Rather, he believes it was a man-made occurrence, and his suspicions were confirmed following the earthquake from a few days ago. Dr. Vegapunk declares that the disaster that caused the flooding was from the Ancient Weapons, and it still exists to this day just waiting for its next usage, as if to say the great war from centuries past is still ongoing.
