Introduction

Orange Town is a small, 42-year old town visited by the Straw Hat Pirates during the Orange Town Arc. Its mayor, Boodle, is not only the town’s current leader but also one of its founding figures. During its occupation by the Buggy Pirates, the town suffered significant damage, prompting most of the villagers to flee to safer parts of the island. However, once Luffy defeated Buggy, the townspeople returned to reclaim and rebuild their home. Luffy purposely left behind a bag of loot from Nami’s stash worth 500,000 to help them rebuild their town. Layout And Locations

Orange Town was built on a patch of wilderness near the sea by townsfolk who had lost their previous homes to a pirate raid. Built from the ground up as a fresh start, the town took on a colonial charm, with cobblestone streets and a quaint, seaside atmosphere.

Pet Food Shop

The Pet Food Shop is a small establishment dedicated to selling food for pets, once run by Hocker. After his death, Chouchou, his loyal dog, took it upon himself to guard the shop in his master’s memory. Tragically, the shop was burned down by Mohji and Richie during the Buggy Pirates’ assault on the town. Two years later, a new pet food shop was opened by Boodle.

Drinker Pub

Drinker Pub (ドリンカー・パブ, Dorinkā Pabu?) is a bar located in Orange Town. Buggy and his pirate crew used this bar as their hangout. The establishment was blown apart when Luffy deflected a Buggy Ball back at the crew.

Refuge

The Refuge was a camp outside Orange Town where some of its citizens had fled after the Buggy Pirates took it over.

History

Past

Orange Town was founded 42 years ago by a small group of townsfolk who had previously lost their old community to pirates. Under the leadership of a young Boodle, the survivors were gradually able to rebuild their lives and establish a new community by the sea. Years later, the Buggy Pirates invaded, forcing the citizens to flee to a refugee camp outside the town’s borders. Only Chouchou remained, guarding the pet food shop out of loyalty for his late master, Hocker, with Boodle coming into town every now and then to feed him.

East Blue Saga

Orange Town Arc

Nami came to Orange Town with the intent of stealing Buggy’s treasure. After successfully swiping a map of the Grand Line, she found herself pursued by some of Buggy’s men. Her escape took an unexpected turn when Luffy—caught by a giant bird while sailing nearby—crashed into town from the sky just in time to save her. The bird had been shot at on Buggy’s orders, unintentionally delivering Luffy straight into the conflict. In order to infiltrate Buggy’s crew and steal from him further, Nami tricked Luffy into becoming her captive and then handed him over to Buggy.

Seizing the opportunity, the clown pirate used Luffy as a test subject for one of his devastating Buggy Balls, whose explosion resulted in the destruction of a large section of Orange Town. Unwilling to let Luffy meet the same fate, Nami reluctantly allied herself with him and Roronoa Zoro. Together, the trio managed to redirect a Buggy Ball back at the pirates, fleeing the scene right after. While searching for a hiding spot in town and a way to free Luffy from the cage he had been locked in, the trio stumbled upon a small dog guarding a little pet shop, as well as Boodle, the town’s mayor who had come to check on Chouchou. Mohji, Buggy’s First Mate, managed to track down the escaping group and set the shop on fire as Chouchou attempted to protect it.

Moved by Chouchou’s loyalty and courage, Luffy knocked out Mohji and his lion, Richie, and then went out to confront Buggy himself with Zoro and Nami. With Mohji defeated, Buggy resolved to destroy more of the town. This act of wanton destruction infuriated Mayor Boodle, who, unable to stand by any longer, rushed off ahead of the others to confront Buggy himself. At the Drinker’s Pub, Buggy was prepared to blow up Boodle alongside part of the town, but Luffy arrived just in time to rescue the mayor. To protect Boodle from doing anything reckless in the upcoming battle against Buggy, Luffy knocked him out as well. Zoro squared off against Cabaji, the chief of staff and acrobatic swordsman of the Buggy Pirates, while Luffy engaged Buggy himself. Meanwhile, took advantage of the distraction to sneak into Buggy’s hoard and steal a portion of his treasure, all while aiding Luffy in the process. After Luffy blasted Buggy away, bringing the conflict to an end, the townspeople—who had been in hiding at the refugee camp—returned, ready to defend their home from what they assumed was still an ongoing pirate invasion. Mistaking Luffy and his friends for the invaders (due to Luffy’s admittance of having knocked out Boodle), they chased the Straw Hats out of town, although Chouchou helped with their escape. Regardless, Luffy left some of Nami’s loot behind in order to help the townsfolk rebuild Orange Town.

Buggys Crew Adventure Chronicles

After the Straw Hats left, the citizens of Orange town drove off Mohji and Cabaji.

Fish-man Island Saga

From The Decks Of The World

After the timeskip, Chouchou, Boodle, and Poro are seen again during the opening of Boodle’s pet food shop.

Translation And Dub Issues

The town was not formally named during its original appearance in the manga, which introduced Boodle as “(the) port town’s mayor” (港町の村長, Minato-chō no sonchō?). As a result, the Viz manga—and later, the 4Kids anime—used “Port Town” as its name. After “Orange Town” (オレンジの町, Orenji no Machi?) was established by both databook Blue and the manga proper, Viz followed suit. In the video game One Piece: Grand Adventure, which was dubbed by 4Kids, it is instead named “Orange Village”.

Trivia

  • The town’s name may be an oblique reference to the introduction of Nami, whose background is closely tied to mikans.
