Layout And Locations

Containing at least twenty different communities, the Conomi Islands appear to be largely agricultural, with several plantations of rice and oranges. The Marine 16th Branch appears to have jurisdiction over this region, although other branches like the 77th Branch can also act here if necessary. The islands were simple and peaceful until the Arlong Pirates landed at Cocoyasi Village. From there, they quickly tyrannized the entire region and extorted a monthly “survival” tax—100,000 for every adult and 50,000 for every child. Failure to pay would result in violent retaliation, up to and including the complete destruction of a town. With the extorted money, Arlong and his crew erected Arlong Park and planned to conquer the entire East Blue, while bribing corrupt officials like Nezumi to minimize attention from the Marines. After eight years of this subjugation, the islands were finally freed with the arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates, who defeated the fish-men and toppled Arlong Park.

Notable Areas

  • Arlong Park: The headquarters of the Arlong Pirates. A resort-like area directly connected to the sea.
  • Cocoyasi Village: Nami’s home village, situated near Arlong Park.
  • Gosa Village: Chabo’s home village. It was destroyed by the Arlong Pirates.

Over the next 8 years, Arlong constructed Arlong Park as his headquarters while the residents of Cocoyasi bided their time, paying their monthly tributes until they could find a way to be freed entrusting hope into Nami. Around 3 to 2 weeks before the start of the main storyline, Gosa Village failed to pay their monthly tribute leading to their village houses being flipped over and destroyed by Arlong’s pet Momoo.

East Blue Saga

Arlong Park Arc

With the arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates understanding the situation at hand, Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp attempted to rescue Nami from her captivity of the Arlong Pirates. Luffy defeated Arlong and destroyed the map room that Nami had spent years stuck in, as well as destroying the park’s building as a whole. The corrupt Marines branch allied with Arlong led by Nezumi of the 16th Branch were also subdued and Nami forced them into returning her stolen money while also making them rebuild Gosa Village. After the arrests of the Arlong Pirates, the Coconomi Islands were freed from Arlong’s tyranny as they went on to have a celebration.

Trivia
