Introduction
Loguetown is a prominent city situated on the Polestar Islands (ポルスター諸島, Porusutā Shotō?) in the East Blue. Spanning nearly the entire island it occupies—save for a few steep hills—it serves as a vital port of call for ships traversing the seas. Its strategic location, lying in close proximity to the Reverse Mountain and just beyond the visible reach of the Red Line, makes it an essential stop for almost all East Blue ships, especially pirate ships, seeking to resupply before venturing into the perilous waters of the Grand Line. The town is famed as both the birthplace and the place of execution of the former Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.
This dual distinction earned it its poetic epithet: “the town of the beginning and the end” (始まりと終わりの町, Hajimari to Owari no Machi?). It serves as the principal setting of the Loguetown Arc. Location And Climate
Loguetown lies just north of the Calm Belt and to the northeast of the entrance to the Reverse Mountain. As such, it serves as a crucial stopping point for East Blue pirates, who come to replenish their supplies before embarking on their journey into the Grand Line. Since Smoker assumed command as the captain of the local Marine base, numerous pirates were captured before even setting foot into the Grand Line’s treacherous waters. The town’s climate is typically bright and sunny, with only occasional clouds to break the calm. However, during the Straw Hat Pirates’ visit, an ominous storm occurred, unlike any weather event known to the town, seemingly summoned by the presence of a mysterious man.
Major Locations
Execution Platform
The Execution Platform (死刑台, Shikei-dai?), was a scaffolded tower at the heart of Loguetown, on which Gol D. Roger was executed. Following his execution, the World Government preserved the platform as a grim tourist attraction for twenty-two years, attracting individuals such as Monkey D. Luffy, among other visitors. In the 4Kids-dubbed version of the anime, it is maintained that Roger had been hanged, thus the structure is referred to as “the gallows.” In addition, at least one character calls it “the doom tower.” During Luffy’s fateful visit—and amidst an assassination attempt by the Buggy Pirates—the platform was struck by a freak lightning storm and obliterated. However, by the passage of two years, it had been reconstructed, standing once again as a reminder of the past.
Loguetown Marine Base
Captain Smoker was in charge of the Loguetown Marine Base. He had earned a fierce reputation for never allowing a pirate to escape the town. This unblemished record came to an end when the Straw Hat Pirates and the Buggy and Alvida Alliance managed to flee the island. This defeat prompted Smoker to abandon his post in pursuit of the escaping pirates.

The Arms Shop…
Read More about Major Locations
The Arms Shop is a family business owned by Ipponmatsu. The shop has stood as a fixture in Loguetown for over two centuries. It offers a wide array of weaponry, from antique swords to the latest fashionable blades, along with clubs, axes, flintlocks, rifles, armor, daggers, and spears. It also takes polishing jobs. Once a bustling business with a steady stream of customers, the shop’s fortunes waned after captain Smoker took charge of the town. Until Zoro’s visit, the most prized possession in Ipponmatsu’s collection was the esteemed sword Yubashiri. After his battle with Dracule Mihawk, in which two of his swords were shattered, it was here that Zoro sought replacements. Zoro encountered the cursed blade Sandai Kitetsu and chose to wield it after a quick test. Impressed by Zoro’s swordmanship, Ipponmatsu gifted him both that sword and Yubashiri, his family heirloom.
Robecca Hanberg
Robecca Hanberg is a high class boutique where Hanger works. Nami tried on some clothes there.
The Fisherman King Uotome
The Fisherman King Uotome is a fish market owned by Sapi. Sanji bought a blue-finned elephant tuna from him.
Antique House
The Antique House is a funky boutique that sells cheap and fashionable clothing. After trying on clothes at Robecca Hanberg but not buying anything, Nami purchased an enormous pile of clothes from there.
Glove Factory
The Glove Factory is located in Loguetown, neighboring the Robecca Hanberg.
Hotel
A hotel, where royals would stay before heading to Levely, which stands with a view of the execution platform where Roger was executed.
Love Love Pirates
Love Love Pirates is an anime-only shop owned by Ed that supposedly sells items that accompanied pirates who returned from the Grand Line.
Gold Roger Bar
The Gold Roger Bar is an anime-only bar operated by Raoul. It was formerly one of Loguetown’s most popular drinking spots for pirates, and famously served Gol D. Roger himself the night before he set sail for the Grand Line. In awe of Roger’s presence and eventual reputation, Raoul renamed the bar in his honor. After Roger’s execution and the Marines’ dominance over Loguetown, the bar’s once-thriving business dwindled. Over time, Smoker became its only regular patron, marking each anniversary of Roger’s execution with a drink. Everything changed when Monkey D. Luffy stumbled upon the bar, shortly before his own voyage for the Grand Line, and rekindled Raoul’s memories of Roger during his brief visit.
Loguetown Opera
The Loguetown Opera is an opera house located somewhere in Loguetown, exclusive to the live-action series. It has hosted the show Hero of the Marines, a retelling of the God Valley Incident.
History
Past
200 years ago, the Arms Shop was built within Loguetown. 77 years ago, Loguetown became the birth place of Gol D. Roger, making the town forever marked by the legacy of the Pirate King. Upon his surrender, the Marines deemed it fitting to execute the Pirate King in the very place of his birth, a symbolic act of bringing an end to the era of piracy. Yet, it was in the final moments of his execution, as Roger uttered his last words, that he inspired a whole new generation of pirates, heralding the dawn of a new age of piracy.
East Blue Saga
Loguetown Arc
Upon arriving in Loguetown, the Straw Hat Pirates went their separate ways to explore the town and gather supplies. Nami tried on some new clothes, Zoro sought out fresh swords to replace the ones he had lost in his fight against Mihawk, and Luffy visited the Roger’s execution platform, eventually climbing on it, eager to take in the view. While standing atop the platform, Luffy was suddenly ambushed by Buggy and Alvida, who swiftly trapped him by forcing his head through the execution lunette. Just as Buggy was about to decapitate Luffy, a bolt of lightning struck the platform, hitting Buggy and freeing Luffy from his captors. Among the crowd witnessing the spectacle was Bartolomeo, who, deeply impressed by Luffy’s attitude in the face of death and incredible luck, began to idolize him. Smoker, the captain of Loguetown’s Marine base, witnessed the extraordinary event unfold and resolved to prevent any pirates from slipping through his grasp. While the Marines succeeded in capturing members of Buggy’s crew, Smoker personally pursued the Straw Hat Pirates as they made a desperate dash back to their ship. Using his Devil Fruit ability, he managed to intercept Luffy, pinning him to the ground with ease. At that critical moment, Monkey D. Dragon appeared and intervened, halting Smoker’s arrest of Luffy and granting the Straw Hats the precious time they needed to safely escape the island. A powerful gust of wind swept through the town, aiding in their escape and, in the process, also freeing Buggy’s crew. In the end, Smoker was left empty-handed, unable to apprehend a single target.
Whole Cake Island Saga
Zou Arc
On their journey to the Levely, King Sterry and Queen Sarie Nantokanette stayed in a hotel in the town.
Final Saga
Egghead Arc
An earthquake hit Loguetown as a result of Lulusia Kingdom’s destruction. Later that day, a Proko was set up to project Vegapunk’s worldwide broadcast onto a screen affixed to the Execution Platform.
Translation And Dub Issues
Though consistently romanized as Loguetown in the original manga and anime—widely held to be a reference to the English prologue and epilogue, reinforcing the town’s symbolic role as both a “beginning and end”—the town is renamed Roguetown in both the 4Kids-dubbed anime and the VIZ manga. This alteration likely stems from the assumption that the original romanization was a misrendering of rogue, referencing the town’s most notorious native, Gol D. Roger. The confusion may have arisen from the well-known difficulty of distinguishing between the ‘r’ and ‘l’ sounds in Japanese phonetics. It should be noted that the katakana used to spell the name—ローグタウン (Rōgutaun)—generally corresponds to the long ‘o’ sound of rogue, rather than the short ‘o’ sound of the -logue suffix. While the Japanese anime vacillates between these pronunciations, the Funimation dub, which retains the spelling Loguetown, always favors the latter.
Trivia
- Though never officially confirmed (e.g. by Rurubu One Piece) the city appears to be mainly designed after Florence, Italy. Two of its most prominent background buildings strongly resemble the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral and the Palazzo Vecchio town hall, while the storefronts feature the names of several well-known Florentine businesses, such as the Madova Glove Factory and Ottino.
