Introduction

Hachinosu, also known as Pirate Island (海賊島, Kaizoku-jima?), is a New World island known to be a “Pirate Paradise” (海賊達の楽園, Kaizoku-tachi no Rakuen?) that is currently occupied by the Blackbeard Pirates. It is said to be where the Davy Back Fight originated and where the legendary Rocks Pirates were formed. Following the downfall of the Rocks Pirates during the God Valley Incident, the island was ruled by Ochoku until the Rocky Port Incident, where he was ousted by Blackbeard. Blackbeard intends to turn Hachinosu into a World Government-allied nation, under the preliminary name of Blackbeard Kingdom (黒ひげ王国, Kurohige Ōkoku?). Layout And Locations

Hachinosu is a small-to-mid-sized island (still large enough to dwarf Thriller Bark) whose foundation consists of dark-gray rock. Centrally on it are constructions made of yellowish rock, most prominently a large, skull-fashioned formation in its center, towering over all else. A city of many smaller buildings (all square, crudely brick-built ones) surrounds said skull, as does a series of proportionally huge palm trees. The skull’s inside is carved into what appears to be a fortress (where Blackbeard has been shown to reside), with the “nose” hole being a giant glass window (plus featuring additional, smaller windows dotting the skull here and there), and both “eye” holes go right through the whole structure. On the outside, the skull is carved to look like it is wearing a bandana, including a rocky protrusion on the left side shaped like the ends of a knot. After Koby was “kidnapped” by the Blackbeard Pirates and brought to Hachinosu, Garp led a team of SWORD and Marine members to invade and save Koby, shaping the island drastically and causing significant geographical destruction through their assault, permanently changing the island’s appearance. The skull, which was partially rendered “alive”, was cracked open by a massive attack from Garp, and the whole town on Hachinosu was partially destroyed by Garp’s rampage. Sanjuan Wolf has since returned the buildings to their original locations that had been moved by Kujaku’s ability, while the skull has been patched with band aids. Somewhere on the island is a Poneglyph.

Residents

As the Pirate Island, all of Hachinosu’s residents are criminals or ex-criminals.

History

Past

Long ago, the island became a paradise for pirates, and it is said that it was the birthplace of the Davy Back Fight. It was also the location where the Rocks Pirates were formed. At some point over thirty-eight years ago, the World Nobles came to the island and stole an important treasure from there. This motivated the Rocks Pirates to fight the Nobles for it. They learned from a leaked transmission at God Valley that the Nobles would be present there, giving Xebec’s crew an opportunity to attack. Other Hachinosu pirates also showed interest in going to God Valley as well, knowing that the imminent battle would turn into a major incident. After the God Valley Incident and subsequent disbandment of the Rocks Pirates, the island was occupied by former member Ochoku.

During The Timeskip

Sometime after the Summit War of Marineford, Trafalgar Law orchestrated the Rocky Port Incident, during which Blackbeard managed to oust Ochoku with the help of Koby. The Blackbeard Pirates subsequently took the island as their base of operations.

Hearing that Absalom had come to the dangerous island for a story, and that the Blackbeard Pirates were on the hunt for Devil Fruit users, Gecko Moria arrived at the island with an army of zombies to rescue Absalom. Unfortunately, Moria soon learned that Absalom had been killed and his power had been transferred to Shiryu. Teach then offered Moria an opportunity to join his crew, but Moria refused and was imprisoned. After the Levely’s conclusion, Blackbeard left Hachinosu with parts of his fleet, intending to take advantage of the dissolution of the Warlord system.

Final Saga

Egghead Arc

After the Blackbeard Pirates had abducted Koby on Amazon Lily, he was brought to Hachinosu as a hostage to bargain for the island getting recognized as a World Government-affiliated nation. Later on, Blackbeard once again left Hachinosu in his quest for the Road Poneglyph rubbings now that both Big Mom and Kaidou were gone. With help from Perona, Koby managed to escape captivity and free the other prisoners. Koby used himself as a decoy to distract the pursuing pirates, until members of SWORD arrived and instigated a raid on the island. A Marine ship was launched high above the island, with Garp jumping off the ship and decimating multiple pirates and buildings with his Galaxy Impact attack. When Avalo Pizarro later turned the skull “alive” with his Devil Fruit powers and grew limbs out of the island, both Garp and Koby caused significant damage to the skull and the environment with their attacks: Garp permanently cracked the skull and Koby destroyed the giant arm, dropping debris on the island. Later, Vegapunk announced via a broadcast to reveal the truth of the world which was also being broadcast on Hachinosu, but when two pirates wanted to listen in, their request was dismissed as the pirates of the island showed little interest in listening to it, being too distracted with gambling, partying and fighting with each other. A recovering Kuzan is later seen listening to Vegapunk’s pre recorded world-wide message that predicted the earthquake that rose the world’s sea level. After hearing the news about the sinking world, pirates across Hachinosu celebrated and argued about the existence of treasures found at the bottom of the ocean, as well as trying to figure out how to obtain such objects in the first place. As Vegapunk announced that the one who claims the One Piece will control the world, the pirates of Hachinosu got anxious waiting for Teach to return.

Elbaph Arc

Sometime following the Marines’ raid on Hachinosu, Teach arrived back to find it still in ruins, with Sanjuan Wolf helping in the reconstruction efforts. Enraged, he threatened and berated Pizarro for letting Moria and Koby get away but calmed down and was pleased to find out that they had gained Garp instead. During a meeting with his crew, he mentioned that they had to take advantage of the high morale amongst the subordinates, with many proclaiming Teach would be the Pirate King that would conquer the world for them. Teach would then contacted Laffitte to have him prepare for something. At the same time, Devon and Augur would arrive back as well, having brought Caribou with them.

Translation And Dub Issues

Hachinosu (蜂の巣?) is Japanese for “beehive” or “honeycomb”. It is also the colloquial term used to describe riddling someone with bullet holes, hence the term “Fullalead” in the VIZ translation. However, according to Prince Grus in Chapter 1061, the origin of the island’s name is that “murderous pirates will come out like bees” in response to even the slightest provocation. The VIZ translation changed this explanation to account for their name choice, with Grus instead stating that it is called Fullalead because “every surface is pockmarked from the constant shootouts”.

Trivia

  • Hachinosu is likely inspired by real-world places:
    • Tortuga Island, a major center and “haven” of Caribbean piracy in the 1600s.
    • Port Royal, Jamaica, another such haven where Caribbean pirates from around the world congregated during the 1600s. By the 1660s, the city had become a pirate utopia and gained a reputation as the “Sodom of the New World”. Additionally, it has been historically subject to severe earthquakes plus accompanying tsunamis, which may be played on in-series with Marshall D. Teach’s use of the Gura Gura no Mi.
    • New Providence, an island in the Bahamas that once served as the base for the Republic of Pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy. The real-life Blackbeard was one of the prominent pirates associated with the Republic.
  • Hachinosu’s giant skull may be based on the Skull Rock from Disney’s Peter Pan.
  • Hachinosu is one of four islands in the series with a skull theme. The others being:
    • The unnamed island Buggy briefly visited while looking for Captain John’s treasure in Chapter 233 and Episode 145.
    • Jaya, prior to being split into two, with the entire island resembling a skull.
    • Onigashima, with both islands being distinguished by a massive, skull-shaped structure in their center
      • Interestingly, both Onigashima and Hachinosu were occupied by one of the Four Emperors (Blackbeard and Kaidou respectively).
  • An image resembling Hachinosu can be seen on a newspaper Kuzan is reading during the From the Decks of the World: The 500,000,000 Man Arc cover story, nearly two years before the island’s proper debut.
