Introduction

Donquixote Doflamingo, nicknamed “Heavenly Yaksha”, is the captain of the Donquixote Pirates. Before his imprisonment, he was a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea with a frozen bounty of 340,000,000, as well as the most influential underworld broker under the codename “Joker”. He is also a former World Noble, descended from the Donquixote Family. He is the first son of the late Donquixote Homing and the older brother of the late Rosinante, both of whom he killed out of feeling betrayed by them. Doflamingo became the King of Dressrosa after taking the throne from Riku Doldo III eight years before the start of the series.

He ruled the country tyrannically until he was stripped of his positions as a Warlord of the Sea and king after he was defeated by Monkey D. Luffy near the end of the Dressrosa Arc. After Doflamingo was arrested by Admiral Fujitora along with most of his crew, he was locked up at Impel Down and placed in Level 6. Vegapunk later cloned Doflamingo as one of the Seraphim to replace the Warlords. Doflamingo is first introduced during the Skypiea Saga, having a minor role during its epilogue as Bellamy’s superior.

Appearance

Doflamingo is a very tall (standing at 10′ and as a comparison taller than Kuzan as shown in their confrontation), very lean and muscular man with a six-pack, fair skin tone (tan skin in the anime), and blonde hair incredibly short resembles a pixie cut. He generally dresses in flamboyant clothes. About his animal theme, the flamingo, his clothes are brightly colored, with his large light pink feather coat most distinctly of all. Doflamingo sports a pair of curved, thin white sunglasses, which appear to serve as his eyesight with orange lenses (red in the anime). He usually walks with an odd, bow-legged waddle, which is also a reference to his animal theme.

In the manga, he wears a white shirt with red stripes (early open revealing his chest), a green belt, and orange pants with white stripes. He also wears pointed black dress shoes. Originally in the anime, Doflamingo had a red shirt with black stripes, a purple belt, and black pants with red stripes. Originally in the anime, Doflamingo had a red shirt with black stripes, a purple belt, and black pants with red stripes. However, when he reappeared during the events of Sabaody, his color scheme was switched to its manga depiction, except for his glasses. In the manga, he has orange-tinted glasses, while in the anime (pre-timeskip) he has purple-tinted ones.

He is also seen often if not always, smiling with his long tongue hanging out, Two years after the war, Doflamingo’s outfit is somewhat less elaborate, wearing a long-sleeved plain, open shirt that has small, dark Jolly Rogers as cufflinks, an orange belt with green ropes, and pink striped pants with white patterns. However, he still wears his trademark sunglasses which have changed from purple to red lenses and dress shoes. Post-Timeskip, he drapes his feathered coat on his shoulders instead of leaving his arms in the sleeves, similar to many high-ranking Marines and pirates alike. He also now wears a golden hoop earring on each ear. After his defeat by Luffy, Doflamingo wore a horizontally striped prisoner outfit.

Even as a child, Doflamingo spent most of the time wearing sunglasses, though he had not yet acquired his trademark ones. Before leaving Mary Geoise, Doflamingo wore spiral sunglasses with dark-brown lenses he wore the typical garb of the Celestial Dragons, and his hair fashioned the same style of his adult self, but also curled upwards typical of the World Nobles. After the family left Mary Geoise, his hair was changed to a neat bowl cut and his wardrobe consisted of simple fine clothes: a low-neck button-up shirt with black stripes and a frilled cravat. However, due to the harsh life on the run from angry citizens, Doflamingo’s appearance started to turn more disheveled; in a depiction, his shirt and hair grew messier and unkempt, going barefoot, sitting on a tattered chair near palm trees, smoking a cigarette. At age 10, after gaining loyalty from his four closest childhood friends, he changed out of his tattered noble clothes for a simpler, yet cleaner, black shirt, and white shorts.

From this point onward, Doflamingo began to look more threatening. He eventually took on the appearance of a mob boss, wearing a black coat like a cloak over a pale lavender shirt with an unbuttoned collar, and bole-colored shorts. His hair took on a spiky appearance, and he replaced his ordinary sunglasses with the trademark pair of spiral-shaped red lenses that he has now. At age 17, his hair was longer than it is currently, he had two earrings on his left ear, and he sported a pair of goggles that he wore on his forehead. In addition, he also wore sunglasses similar to the ones he wears today, but they had a different temple design and his signature feathered mantle. At age 25, when Law first came to him requesting membership in the crew, Doflamingo seemed to have done away with the goggles, but otherwise seemed the same in appearance; he wore a black dress shirt with a red tie and white pants with a bright red design, with his signature mantle over it, At age 28, during his trip to Minion Island he briefly wore a blood-red double-breasted suit with yellow-gold buttons, with matching blood-red dress pants and shoes, a pair of (dark green in the anime, black in the manga) gloves and changed his sunglasses to the ones he wears currently. By the time he was 31, he had his hair cut down to the current length. Currently, after his defeat at Dressrosa, Doflamingo now has Seastone shackles on his arms, legs, and entire chest, while chained to the floor of Tsuru’s ship, he is also wearing a standard Impel Down prison uniform, with a few white bandages on his forehead as well. He was also given a new set of sunglasses.

Donquixote Doflamingo › Personality And Relationships

Introduction

Personality

Doflamingo is an incredibly arrogant, prideful, and carefree person with psychopathic tendencies. He seems to have a penchant for dramatic phrasing, as well as a habit of exaggerated posing when giving declarations. He fears very few people, as he openly taunted Fleet Admiral Sengoku, sits on the table during the Warlord meetings and shows only gleeful interest at the thought of warring with Whitebeard. He does, however, dislike it when people take rumors seriously and speak them as facts, and does not cave into such prejudice from such false rumors, as seen when he grew irritated when Giolla stated the incorrect belief that Amber Lead Syndrome was contagious. He also has a habit of sitting in strange positions, like on the back of chairs, on tables, on barrels, and even on a pile of bodies in the middle of a war zone and crouching on top of a wall. He is also completely calm and cool-headed in most situations; even when Baby 5 attacked him with what would be lethal blows, he simply dodged away casually while continuing to have his conversation over the phone. Doflamingo seems to live by a “might is right” philosophy, believing that the strong are the ones who make the rules and will be the only ones capable of living in the “New Age”. Due to his belief in this “New Age”, Doflamingo seems to lose interest in other things easily, as seen with his leadership of the Bellamy Pirates and the ownership of the Human Auctioning House. He also threatened to quit the Seven Warlords of the Sea if the orders given by the World Government are not satisfactory to his liking or if they annoy him, and that he never really cared about the World Government from the beginning. Though a firm believer of the “New Age” philosophy, Doflamingo, unlike his former subordinate Bellamy, himself seems to have an open opinion on dreams, though dreams themselves do not seem to interest him at all; despite his belief, he does not seem to oppose becoming the Pirate King. Like many other characters, he has a unique laugh, being “Fuffuffuffu” (フッフッフッフッ?), or in characterized English, “Heh heh heh heh”.

Noble Upbringing

When he was 8 years old, he had the spoiled and violent attitude typical of a Celestial Dragon, wanting slaves and expecting subservience from commoners. He also had a habit of ending his sentences with “eh” as a result of being around Celestial Dragons who spoke with this speech pattern, which eventually disappeared when he was brought out of that atmosphere and his ties and values from his former life were slowly broken. Even after his father took him away from such a life of luxury, Doflamingo clung onto his heritage, believing he still has the rights of his lost origins, complaining that he did not want to live inside a rundown shack even though they were being hunted, and resents his father to this day for taking it all away from him. Doflamingo’s arrogance stems from his heritage and he hypocritically states that what he despises the most is being looked down upon, while looking down on the world of commoners that he has been condemned to living in to this day. He believes that his suffering from his father’s choice is greater than anything anyone else has suffered, as he deems those instances as child’s play compared to his own miserable childhood.

Despite hating the Celestial Dragons for rejecting his return and swearing revenge on them, Doflamingo continues to believe to this day that he is nothing short of being their equal (if not superior), and that he has the blood of a god flowing through him, something he would flaunt at his opponents. Believing his heritage to be the supporting pillar to his greatness, and that one’s bloodline is the determining factor to superiority, Doflamingo held humanity with contempt as was shown when he ceaselessly flaunted his title in front of Luffy, even in his final moments before Luffy defeated him, while believing that a mere commoner never had a chance to defeat him. Born and raised in the comfort of Mary Geoise, an 8-year-old Doflamingo was as oblivious of the outside world as the rest of his former compatriots, was infuriated that commoners did not bow to him, unaware of their hatred for the World Nobles’ abuse of their diplomatic immunity, and did not understand what genuine suffering was. As he suffered hunger, pain and persecution, however, Doflamingo’s knowledge matured, allowing him to understand what true suffering humanity goes through first hand—though unlike his father and brother, Doflamingo in no way sympathized with the commoners’ anguish nor felt any regret for them, and instead swore vengeance against all of them for daring to bring pain onto him, all the while his sadistic nature would make even more people suffer for many years to come: he continued to have anyone who offended him in even the slightest manner utterly destroyed and once burned down an entire town just for having shoddy pavement; he ran a slave shop and forced Dressrosa civilians and dwarves into slavery as an insult to how many slaves suffered at the hands of Celestial Dragons and even mocked the commoners’ sufferings in revenge, using the fact that one boy was killed by sixteen shots from a Celestial Dragon to be the homage of his attack against Luffy, while referring to the sixteen string bullets as “holy ammunition”. Instead of accepting how the World Nobles caused much suffering to humanity, Doflamingo cursed his father and brother for allowing their kindness to bring them down to the mortal world, and that they deserved to die so they could redeem themselves in his eyes.

Due to his matured outlook of life in the commoner’s world, Doflamingo became very observant of the environment people grew up in, as he officially adopted Law for seeing the boy’s sufferings from the tragedy of the White City while disliking prejudice based on inaccurate rumors (and did not cave in to such in regards to Law’s illness), and later rescued the sisters Monet and Sugar from the extremely unfortunate environment they grew up in. In contrast, he saw the Bellamy Pirates as little more than rowdy ruffians unworthy of his positive attention, as he showed little to no respect for them. Doflamingo has an unbreakable will to survive with pride, refusing to plea or die even when citizens tortured him in a failed attempt to break him, while swearing aloud to live through it just to get his revenge by killing every one of his torturers; compared to how Homing and Rosinante were begging for mercy, Doflamingo’s willpower utterly horrified his father, brother and the torturers alike. Even when being hunted down by the Celestial Dragons, Doflamingo managed to escape them due to his will to live. His strength to live on brought about a desire for immortality, which is the main reason he wants the Ope Ope no Mi.

For this, he was prepared to force his brother, Rosinante, to eat it (unaware that Rosinante already possessed another power) and then order Rosinante to give up his life in exchange for giving Doflamingo eternal life, knowing that even though Rosinante is a traitor, he still could not reject his orders. This setback from immortalizing himself angers Doflamingo whenever this failure is mentioned. Due to his abilities, heritage, and blackmailing the World Government, Doflamingo is extremely self-assured, confident that he can get and do whatever he wants even if there is a chance the odds are against him. He has such confidence in his Devil Fruit and abilities, he has no concern with facing whoever stands in his way or who he is up against. He was able to fight several of Whitebeard’s men and made one of them attack the latter’s crew.

He even went as far to go against Crocodile, another former Warlord, to where he tried to form an alliance with him and didn’t show any hesitation when the former attacked him. When he was blackmailing the government, he threatened an official that he will quit whenever he feels like it, knowing that this was possible because he holds the knowledge of the World Nobles’ sacred treasure. Doflamingo isn’t without caution as he didn’t believe Crocodile was defeated by a Marine captain. After hearing about Luffy, he took an interest in him, especially due to the fact that he bears the initial “D.” so he had his crew gather intel on him and his crew. Doflamingo even warned Vergo and Monet to be careful with the Straw Hat captain as he can use Supreme King Haki. Still, because of his arrogance and overconfidence, Doflamingo underestimates his foes, as he didn’t count on Vergo and Monet being defeated, and when he was about to kill Smoker, he was caught off guard by the sudden arrival Kuzan, yet still, he tried to kill Smoker only to be immediately frozen by Kuzan. Doflamingo had to change his strategy since he couldn’t kill Kuzan, showing he has common sense, and he can admit that he gets carried away, as when he tried to kill Sanji only to have Law intervene. When facing Luffy and Law, Doflamingo had Trebol by his side, so he thought he could have beaten them; however, he didn’t count on Trebol’s defeat and the interference of Luffy’s allies. When Doflamingo saw Luffy’s Gear Fourth, the former just laughed at how ridiculous the appearance of his form only to feel the immense power from it. After Luffy’s Gear Fourth deactivated, Doflamingo made it his sworn priority to eliminate him at all costs while attacking anyone who gets in his way.

Violence And Sadism

Doflamingo likes to toy around with his opponents and victims in a sadistic and cruel way, as seen when he gleefully forced two Marines to try to kill each other, and forcing Bellamy and Sarquiss to fight each other and suffer injuries before dealing the final blow, all the while laughing at their pain. During the battle of Marineford, all of Doflamingo’s confrontations had been for the sake of personal amusement, hinting at a sadistic side, such as when he is seen laughing joyfully after severing Oars Jr.’s leg. His sadistic side is further shown as when he shot Law with lead bullets, as a cruel reference to Law being sick from lead poisoning from when he was a child. This puppeteering nature is implied by Law when he claimed that they will not act the way he expects them to. Doflamingo also possesses an extremely bloodthirsty mentality as he brutally punished a gladiator for not shedding any blood for the spectators of his Colosseum fights and casually licked some of the blood from his gladiator victim off his own face. He also believes in the existence of an inherent cruelty in all human beings regardless of personality that is brought by the excitement of seeing blood and death. He would go as far as committing patricide at the age of 10, and fratricide at the age of 28, both incidents stemming from his contempt for his victims’ actions. Doflamingo also has this habit of licking his lips at the action of causing bloodshed or an upcoming chaotic event, the latter which he was eager once Whitebeard started his rampage at Marineford and the former when he shot Law at the Colosseum.

Fears And Trauma

Prior to the timeskip, Doflamingo had a complete and utter lack of fear and doubt, going as far as to rob the World Nobles of their tributes, so he could blackmail the government. He is rarely seen with any expression other than amusement by any turn of events regardless of whom they affect. Only on rare occasions does he let go of his trademark smile, such as frowning in annoyance at being summoned to Mary Geoise, surprised when Laffitte arrived unannounced and unnoticed until he made his presence known, and when Little Oars Jr. attempted to attack him directly. However, these moments were short-lived, as Doflamingo would usually just grin again.

That is not to say Doflamingo is completely fearless, as one of the few genuine fears he was shown reliving his childhood memories of being attacked by a mob as a child. Doflamingo learned pain and hunger for the first time in his life during those times, which caused him to have nightmares of the torture he was subjected to even by age 25. To cope with it, he drank copious amounts of alcohol. He is also shown to be deeply afraid of Kaidou, since he was aware that the Emperor would kill him if he could not provide more SMILEs for his army of Zoan users. Two years after the Summit War of Marineford, he would continue to maintain his confident smile while everything was under control.

However, when Law defeated Vergo and threatened the SAD supply, and even mocked him for his lack of fear and doubt as signs of overconfidence, Doflamingo finally expressed true anger and worry. When Law finally destroyed the SAD supply, captured Caesar, and used that to threaten Doflamingo into abdicating his position as a Warlord, Doflamingo finally lost his composure and showed utter panic and intense anger. Doflamingo also showed signs of fear of someone’s ability when Admiral Fujitora brought down a meteorite during the three way confrontation between the admiral, Law, and him. Upon finally losing control over Dressrosa, Doflamingo succumbed to fear, despair, and fury. Doflamingo became so frustrated by all this that he decided to just laugh everything off. While discussing with Law about how his father abandoned the status of the Celestial Dragons and how he was setback from acquiring eternal life, Doflamingo became more and more frustrated as he relived the past. Furthermore, when Doflamingo becomes furious, the veins in his head begin to pop out. Should he hold utter contempt for his victims, Doflamingo has a habit of shooting his victims with a gun, as shown with his father, his brother, and Law. As a former Celestial Dragon who remains a fanatic when it comes to their associated privileges and history, Doflamingo has an innate fear for those who bear the middle initial “D.” in their names, knowing that such people are the Celestial Dragon’s natural enemies. Rosinante believed that this alone endangered Law while being anywhere near his older brother, and that if Doflamingo should find out, he would kill the boy on the spot. Indeed, when Law reveals his hidden name, Doflamingo became shocked, and though he dismissed the idea of the “D.” being his natural enemy as an idiot superstition, he became reckless in battle, as was seen by his attacking Law furiously while leaving himself close to his attack range.

Family And Subordinate Care

Doflamingo has immense pride in his flag, and he will let people sail under it, but has great expectations for them and will not hesitate to dispose of them should they fail him, viewing their lack of strength as tarnishing to his name. He does not have much respect for people he considers weak, and desires to only associate himself with the strong, being quick to cast aside the weak. Though he could not care less for weaker people, he does seem to have some interest in improving them, if possible, as he will point out their flaws and occasionally give them second chances to please him. Despite his apathy for the weak, he often seems to make alliances with promising rookies. He adopted Trafalgar Law, Buffalo, and Baby 5 into his crew and apparently did it very early on their journeys, and treated Law and Baby 5 as though they were his younger siblings; It is extremely difficult to join his crew, as most people, especially children, were chased off. However, he does have an extremely strong sense of loyalty, duty, camaraderie and compassion to the subordinates who had been with him for a long time, as he expressed remorse when he had to discard Monet and Vergo, felt disappointment when Law betrayed him, and went out of his way to destroy eight towns simply to protect Baby 5 from her personality flaws. This is also displayed by his anger when Trafalgar Law took his subordinate Giolla hostage. He is also much more lenient toward his crewmates’ failures. Despite his loyalty, compassion, duty, camaraderie and devotion to his crew, he can still be annoyed by their antics; such as Trebol being too close while chatting with him, as evidenced by his irritated frown. He cares enough for the officers of his crew that he protected Trebol from Trafalgar Law without a moment of hesitation. Though his care for his new family seems genuine, he will not hesitate in sacrificing any of them when he sees it necessary, as he intended to force Rosinante to sacrifice his life to perform the Perennial Youth Operation for Doflamingo’s immortality, a plan that he switched to Law when realizing that Law ate the Ope Ope no Mi intending to “educate” the boy into seeing the importance to die for him. Law speculates that Doflamingo’s care for his crew is really nothing but an act whenever it’s convenient for him.

Relationships

Family

Doflamingo once had deep ties to his family, especially his mother, given how distraught he was after her death. He also cared about his father Homing and his brother Rosinante, before Homing forfeited their World Noble status and Rosinante betraying him, which led Doflamingo to kill them and consider them with contempt. By his own claim, Doflamingo forgave both his father and brother when they died, believing that only by dying could they redeem themselves for him.

Donquixote Homing

Doflamingo’s father, Donquixote Homing, was a World Noble who forfeited his status in the modest wish to live a normal existence amongst commoners when Doflamingo was eight years old. Prior to Homing renouncing their World Noble status, Doflamingo had respected Homing as a fellow World Noble. Homing’s choice had resulted in the entire family to losing their privileges and much of their wealth, and, after residents of the island found out that the family lost their World Noble statuses, hunted them down and they were forced into a rotting shack. Due to the sudden deplorable conditions they were forced into, Doflamingo’s mother died of illness shortly after leaving Mary Geoise, and the rest of the family were left to suffer persecution and torture. Doflamingo, in turn, came to hold his father in utter contempt for condemning the family to such a state, considering the man to be foolish for abandoning the family’s good fortunes, even cursing at the man for bringing them such unnecessary misfortune, despite Homing’s attempt to recall the World Nobles to save at least his wife and sons, a request that was coldly rejected. Upon reaching ten years old, Doflamingo used the pistol that Trebol gifted him to kill his father, using the man’s head in an attempt to regain his status as a World Noble; this failed, as the Celestial Dragons refused to let a “family of traitors” return, thus condemning Doflamingo to the world of commoners forever. Due to the tragedy Homing brought onto the family, Doflamingo came to hold a grudge against his father up to even this day, as he viciously badmouthed Homing in front of Luffy, Law and Bellamy, showing absolutely no remorse in killing him.

Donquixote Rosinante

Doflamingo once considered Donquixote Rosinante to be his precious little brother, going as far as warning Law not to harm Corazon (as Rosinante is known as), as Doflamingo would personally bring death to anyone who dare hurt a single hair on Corazon’s head. Doflamingo’s protectiveness of his brother was also shown again as he was concerned upon seeing Corazon’s stab wound. Even as children, the two were close together, as they hunted food together for their ill mother, and Rosinante cried in horror for his brother’s injuries. However, when Rosinante left the crew with Law for six months, Doflamingo started to suspect his brother being a spy since Marines no longer pursued the crew. When Vergo reported Rosinante’s attempt to pass vital information to the Marines, Doflamingo hardened his heart and disowned Rosinante from his family.

Shortly after that, Doflamingo personally murdered Rosinante, the closest thing to regret he showed was contempt for his brother for forcing him to commit family-killing a second time. Like his father, Doflamingo spoke harshly about his brother to Law, proclaiming he was nothing more than an annoyance and it was a relief to be rid of him. He also held a furious grudge against Rosinante for thwarting his attempt at gaining immortality by feeding Law the Ope Ope no mi as was shown when Doflamingo was outraged at Law’s steadfast dedication to Rosinante even moments before his presumed death. In return, Rosinante saw Doflamingo as a dangerously evil man, and it was Rosinante’s duty as a brother to stop him. The fracture of this brotherly relationship actually began when Doflamingo threatened their torturers fearlessly, which frightened both Rosinante and Homing. Rosinante lost all genuine attachments for Doflamingo when the latter killed Homing two years after leaving Mary Geoise, where Rosinante pleaded in vain for his brother to stop; this traumatizing move left the younger brother in tears. Because of this, Rosinante denied his true nature from the rest of the crew. He disappeared from Doflamingo’s right after this event, and returned after 14 years, which Doflamingo never questioned due to their once-firm brotherly bond. Despite any distrusts and grudges, and even being surprised that his younger brother would dare point a gun at him, Doflamingo knew for a fact that Rosinante could never actually kill him, as Rosinante inherited their father’s kindness and compassion.

Mother

Doflamingo apparently treasured his mother very much as he and Rosinante brought food to her when she became ill, and looked worried when she started coughing. She died right in front of an eight-year-old Doflamingo. Doflamingo mentions to Luffy and Law of how deeply he resented his father as he sees him as the one ultimately responsible for her death.

Crew

While Doflamingo may be sadistically cruel and unforgiving to his enemies, he seems to hold a genuine attachment towards the members of his crew, the Donquixote Pirates, to a very high degree, as they had been his family since his birth clan condemned him to a life of misery. This has been demonstrated when he was visibly distraught at the thought of Monet giving her life to destroy Punk Hazard, as well as when he gave his honest thanks to Vergo for his years of service. This is also further displayed when a foot soldier had laughed at Pica’s voice, causing Baby 5 to shoot him as he provoked the ire of the entire family. This incident made Doflamingo explain how precious his “family” was to him, stating that the members of his crew with the titles of officer and above have shared joys and sorrows along with him and are all he has, while also threatening that he would not forgive anyone who laughs at them. Buffalo stated that Doflamingo was even willing to reinstate Law back into his crew, having held a seat for him since his betrayal (although this was something of an offset when Doflamingo has decided to use Law as a sacrifice for the Perennial Youth Operation).

He will even calmly forgive failure, as long as his orders were followed. However, his brother Rosinante stated that only the Elite officers know his true nature, suggesting that even among his crew he shares some secrets. His kindness, however, did not extend out of the officer tiers, as he dismissed Bellamy for constant failures and being an eyesore, while threatening a peon for giggling at Pica’s high-pitched voice. Furthermore, while he would forgive any kind of failure, the one thing he will not tolerate is betrayal; he threatened to kill Law if he dares to break the Blood Law of the crew (by bringing harm to any member of the crew) and when Rosinante, Law and Viola turned against him, he demanded their deaths in the most cruelest of ways. Similar to the Straw Hat Pirates and Big Mom Pirates, the Donquixote Pirates seem to have a wide and assorted variety of crew members, as opposed to many crews that follow a specific theme, ranging from a young girl to elderly people. Several members have some personality quirks that Doflamingo is willing to look past, such as Vergo’s witlessness, Baby 5’s inability to refuse any request, Trebol’s tendency of getting physically close when communicating, and Diamante’s constant denial of flattery until it has been retracted. The officers refer to Doflamingo as “Young Master” (若, Waka?), as a sign of respect, or by his alias “Joker” for discretion. The executive officers Vergo, Diamante, Pica and Trebol call him “Doffy” (ドフィ, Dofi?, Viz: “Dofy”) in a casual manner, similar to how his father and brother did.

Trebol

Trebol is very casual around Doflamingo and does not seem to be scared of him, as he gets awkwardly close to him, much to Doflamingo’s dismay. The two met during Doflamingo’s childhood, with Trebol never torturing Doflamingo like the other North Blue citizens did and even offered him power by giving the former Celestial Dragon his Devil Fruit and signature flintlock. Trebol often refers to Doflamingo by the nickname “Doffy”. Despite how casual Trebol can be with him, Doflamingo trusts Trebol as much as the other executives, possibly ranking him as the most significant of them due to trusting him with the protection of Sugar and keeping him by his side when Law and Luffy encountered him. Doflamingo cares for Trebol’s well-being which was shown when he intercepted an attack from Law when he had Trebol cornered. In return, Trebol cares for Doflamingo’s well-being as seen by his jumping to his aid whenever he appeared to be in danger or killing anyone who offended Doflamingo in the slightest manner. Though, when Trebol was injured by Law, Doflamingo did call him an idiot for ignoring his repeated warning and falling into Law’s trap. Nevertheless, he was visibly shocked when Trebol attempted to blow himself up to kill Law.

Vergo

Vergo is described as Doflamingo’s most convenient and trustworthy Marine officer, implying there are other Marines loyal to Doflamingo. Vergo was originally the first Corazon of the crew. Along with Trebol, Diamante, and Pica, Vergo was one of four comrades who stayed the longest with Doflamingo, having known him since at least when Doflamingo was 10 years old. They never abused Doflamingo for being born a Celestial Dragon as the rest of the citizens did, and even declared Doflamingo as their leader upon witnessing his awakening of Supreme King Haki. Vergo enlisted in the Marines by Doflamingo’s instructions, forfeiting his seat as Corazon, but nevertheless remaining as an elite officer. Vergo’s loyalty to Doflamingo is fierce, as he violently beat up Rosinante for betraying Doflamingo’s trust, and intended to kill Law in the most brutal fashion possible for treason. After Vergo had been defeated by Law and left to die in the exploding SAD production room, Doflamingo expressed his eternal gratitude for Vergo’s loyal services before bidding him farewell, showing a good relationship despite Doflamingo’s dislike for failures. In return, Vergo smiled in gratitude.

Diamante

Diamante, as the “Hero of the Corrida Colosseum” on Dressrosa, is highly regarded by Doflamingo, so much so that Doflamingo openly notes on his importance and compliments him a lot, though he refuses this flattery until it has been retracted. The two have known each other for over 30 years and his loyalty to Doflamingo was fierce to the point he would help destroy an entire town for having bad pavement that made Doflamingo trip. He has enough faith in Diamante to hold onto the Mera Mera no Mi. Like the other elite officers, he refers to him as “Doffy”.

Pica

Pica is very loyal to Doflamingo as shown when he was willing to listen to him in spite of not liking Doflamingo’s roundabout approach and preferring to take things head on. The two have known each other for over 30 years and his loyalty to Doflamingo was fierce to the point he would help destroy an entire town for having bad pavement that made Doflamingo trip. Doflamingo in turn does not tolerate anyone making fun of Pica’s high-pitched voice. Like the other elite officers, he refers to Doflamingo as “Doffy”.

Sugar

He is extremely protective of Sugar, as she turned the majority of rebels to his rule into toys to help him control Dressrosa. As such, she is continually guarded under the protection of Trebol.

Giolla

Doflamingo was concerned about Giolla’s life when Law threatened to kill her. In fact, he cared for her so much that he would let the Straw Hat Pirates escape, while still holding Caesar captive, just to save her. In turn Giolla is very loyal to Doflamingo, where she would gladly give her life for her young master, just to make sure that nothing gets in his way.

Lao G

Lao G has respect and loyalty to Doflamingo and calls him “Young Master”; he considers Doflamingo’s orders to be absolute. Lao G commented that Dressrosa belongs to Doflamingo and everybody in the country are slaves to him. Lao G also mused an apology towards Doflamingo during his defeat against Sai.

Senor Pink

Senor Pink apologized to Doflamingo as he fell in battle with Franky, signifying respect and loyalty towards him, but apart from that, has not been seen much around him.

Gladius

Gladius has blind loyalty to his captain, as he was quick to seek revenge for Violet’s betrayal against him. Gladius also was overprotective enough to shoot Baby 5 when she was trying to kill Doflamingo, while the other members did not seem to care.

Baby 5 And Buffalo

Baby 5 has a grudge against Donquixote Doflamingo to the point that she attempted to attack him with fatal blows, but Doflamingo does not see it as rebellion as he sent her to Punk Hazard to assist Vergo right after her failed assault. According to Buffalo, Doflamingo views her like a little sister, and killed all of her would-be boyfriends to protect her from her rash decision of accepting every proposal she receives. When infuriated by the deaths of her fiancés, she refers to him derogatorily by his codename “Joker” rather than “Young Master”, which is the standard way the lower officers refer to Doflamingo. At times when she wants to help him, she refers to him as “Young Master” like the others. Buffalo is perfectly fine with that fact that Donquixote Doflamingo destroyed eight cities and all the people living there, simply for the sake of keeping Baby 5 away from her “boyfriends”. He cares a lot for Doflamingo’s well-being, as he was on the verge of tears when Kuzan used his ability to freeze Doflamingo at Punk Hazard and was outraged when Kyros seemingly decapitated Doflamingo in front of him.

Monet

Monet is a very loyal subordinate of Doflamingo, having been placed to keep Caesar Clown under surveillance, but he threatened her with death if she allowed anything negative to happen to the scientist. He also ordered her to commit a murder-suicide bombing to take out the entire Punk Hazard populace to clean up the mess. Despite this, they might have a benign relationship, as Doflamingo expressed what seems to be an apology for putting her through the entire ordeal, and even regretted that he must order her to die for him; Monet’s loyalty did not waver, as she was already plotting to die in such a way before Doflamingo ordered her, and gladly accepted his last order to her. Right before she tried to push the button, Doflamingo appeared to lament the fact that he made Monet blow up the island.

Caesar Clown

Doflamingo is associated with Caesar Clown. Caesar needs him to approve of his actions before committing them, to avoid drawing attention to Punk Hazard, but Doflamingo distrusts the scientist and sends Monet to spy on him. The high value Doflamingo has for Caesar is due to the disgraced scientist’s ability to produce the SAD, that the Warlord uses to create the SMILE, which is highly stressed in preventing a wrathful Kaidou from killing the entire Donquixote Pirates. For this he threatens Monet with death if she let anything happen to him. Upon Caesar’s defeat, Doflamingo ordered Buffalo and Baby 5 to retrieve the fallen scientist to ensure his supply of SAD does not dry out, rather than dismissing him for his debacle as he did with the Bellamy Pirates. His need for Caesar was so intense that he tricked the world into believing he resigned from the Seven Warlords of the Sea, just to bring Law into a trap so he could rescue the scientist. As Caesar was working directly under Doflamingo, a Warlord, his crimes were pardoned as well. Doflamingo bolstered this protection by declaring Caesar as his subordinate in front of Admiral Issho, thus Caesar effectively became a member of the Donquixote Family.

Bellamy Pirates

Although not exactly part of the Donquixote Pirates, the Bellamy Pirates pledged their allegiance to Donquixote Doflamingo, and he lent them his own symbol. Doflamingo, like the rest of the Bellamy Pirates, believes in the New Age but prefers to keep his opinions of other people’s beliefs to himself. Doflamingo has pride in his flag and when Bellamy disgraced it with his loss to Monkey D. Luffy, he punished him, as well as dismissing the crew under the claim that he has no use for Bellamy under his authority. When Bellamy brought a golden pillar from Skypiea as a tribute, Doflamingo gave him a second chance and officially recruited him into the crew, and even gave him an opportunity to become a high-ranking commander by winning the Corrida Colosseum. However, after Bellamy lost, Doflamingo lost faith once again and ordered Dellinger to eliminate him in what he believed the likelihood of failing to assassinate Luffy. During Doflamingo’s “Bird Cage” game, Bellamy confronted Doflamingo about his betrayal and was brutally assaulted. Doflamingo then cruelly mocked Bellamy for being weak and used him as a human shield against Luffy and forced his former underling to battle Luffy. He later released him and allowed him to do as he pleased, to which Bellamy refused to betray his principles and wanted to fight Luffy one last time. Even after his loyalty, Doflamingo showed no compassion to Bellamy and spoke harshly about him after Luffy defeated him.

Dressrosa Citizens

While he was king of Dressrosa, Doflamingo had absolute dominion over the entire country. His status as a Warlord was what granted the privilege of governing the kingdom without his criminal record affecting his standing. A good number of citizens once had a great deal of respect and admiration for their king Donquixote Doflamingo, as well as the Donquixote Pirates. The citizens tend to become angered when their king is disrespected or spoken ill of, and citizens become disgusted at the sight of someone tarnishing Doflamingo’s name. He was very well beloved amongst the kingdom, as when his “departure” from the Seven Warlords of the Sea and abdication of his kingship became public, the island’s citizens all went into mass panic and cried for his reconsideration.

Even after that, he remained very popular, as the crowd in the Corrida Colosseum cheered and respected the laws his subordinates proclaimed, and furiously glared at Franky for speaking ill of their king. Of course, with his resignation being falsified, he remains monarch. However, while Doflamingo has appeared to be a benevolent and heroic monarch on the outside, especially compared to former king Riku who ran rampant across the kingdom, in truth he manipulated the king to do so and deceived his way into the hearts of the people of the country. Doflamingo was in fact irritated when the citizens kept crying for his reconsideration when he announced his supposed resignation. His actions of converting citizens to toys and erasing memories of such citizens further demonstrate a maliciousness towards the kingdom.

The only denizens of the kingdom to realize Doflamingo’s true colors and hate him for it are the soldiers who once served King Riku III, Tank Lepanto included, as he literally manipulated them to attack the people as part of his con to take the throne. While some died during the attack, the rest only serve Doflamingo to keep themselves alive and keep watch over the Princess Viola. Upon Sugar fainting and her powers over the kingdom deactivating, her victims returned to their original forms, and revealed to the rest of the citizens of Doflamingo’s true colors. Once the truth spread throughout the island, all the citizens immediately screamed for Doflamingo’s head, leading to a massive revolt, thus dethroning him and ending the trust and adoration they once had for him, replacing it with hate and fury. Exposed as a villain, Doflamingo resorted to psychological means to control the citizens, noting that he should have used tyranny to lord over them from the beginning. He forced everyone in Dressrosa to kill and harm each other, and in a sadistic move, took advantage of the people’s fear and greed for his own entertainment, offering freedom from his game of death and prize money by capturing twelve of his enemies. Despite this, Doflamingo never intended to let anyone live and, after having all his forces defeated, starting to shrink the Bird Cage to kill everyone faster. He even stated he can always make another kingdom, showing that he had no genuine care for the people of Dressrosa.

Allies
Disco

Disco is in charge of the Human Auctioning House at Grove 1. When he was shot and injured by Shalria, he called the shop’s owner, Warlord Donquixote Doflamingo for help. However, Doflamingo told Disco that he could have the shop and to never call again, as he, Doflamingo, was not interested in it anymore because the government was calling the Seven Warlords of the Sea to battle against the Whitebeard Pirates, much to his horror, and he already had big plans for the upcoming era of “Smiles”, foreshadowing his complicity in the production of SAD long before Punk Hazard. Being abandoned by Doflamingo left Disco impoverished and bankrupt.

Kaidou

Doflamingo once aided Kaidou by supplying him with SMILE Devil Fruits. It is because of Kaidou’s immense power and influence that Doflamingo treasures Caesar to the highest level, and even fears the prospect of upsetting the mighty Emperor, knowing that failure in producing any more SMILE will make the unassailable Kaidou furious.

Enemies
Gecko Moria

After the war at Marineford, Doflamingo was ordered to kill Moria. After severely injuring Moria, Doflamingo merely laughed at him and casually informed him that the World Government deemed him too weak to be a Warlord and it would be better for it to look like he died honorably in the war. Even though Moria escaped his clutches, Doflamingo was not concerned, believing that he would still die from his wounds.

World Government

Doflamingo was once an ally of the World Government, but he did not appear to care much about them. During the meeting at Mary Geoise, he showed no respect for the Fleet Admiral of the time, Sengoku. Also, to kill his boredom, Doflamingo used his body manipulation ability to make Mozambia and Stainless fight each other. The fight was stopped when Sengoku told Doflamingo to stop messing around. Former ownership of the Human Auction House may have had some impact on the justice system, but apparently not enough to lose his position. Also, after the Whitebeard War, when a government worker attempted to reprimand him for his failure in handling Moria, Doflamingo responded by threatening and telling the man that he was a pirate, and he could quit the Seven Warlords of the Sea if the orders given to him by the World Government were not to his liking or they simply annoyed him. He also stated that he never really cared about the World Government. However, Doflamingo blackmailed the government to let him join from the start. It is also revealed by Law that he is an underworld broker, something unknown to the Government. He used Vergo as a mole into the Marines, manipulating certain actions and events through him to how he saw fit. Upon arriving at Punk Hazard, he killed or injured many Marines and he severely wounded Vice Admiral Smoker. After his defeat at Dressrosa, Doflamingo was stripped of his Warlord status and was once again a criminal, thus allowing them to finally arrest him.

Celestial Dragons

Being a member of the Donquixote Family makes Doflamingo a descendant of one of the twenty kings who founded the World Government 800 years ago, and thus, a World Noble. However, when Doflamingo’s father forfeited the family’s status as World Nobles, Doflamingo himself lost all the associated privileges and wealth. Even after killing his father and presenting the man’s head to his former compatriots, his branch of the Donquixote Family was labelled a family of traitors, and he did not regain his lost status; in fact, the other World Nobles attempted (and failed) to kill Doflamingo for even daring to return to Mary Geoise. Despite this, he managed to blackmail the Celestial Dragons into giving him equal privileges (to a limited extent) by utilizing the knowledge of their national treasure. This allowing him to have the media print out falsified news of his resignation from the Seven Warlords of the Sea, simply to deceive Law and the Straw Hat Pirates, which only the World Nobles themselves would have the power to do and can even summon CP0 if needed. Doflamingo was noted for his lack of fear towards even his former compatriots, going as far as to rob their tributes to threaten the Government. Because they refused to reinstate him, he swore to destroy the very world that they lord over. The Government finds Doflamingo’s lack of fear and respect for the Celestial Dragons to be a worrisome trait. Ironically, Doflamingo continues to cling onto his heritage, flaunting it in front of Luffy, Law, and Bellamy when he thought he was being looked down upon, believing himself to remain equal (if not superior) to the Celestial Dragons.

Marines

After the events of Punk Hazard, Fujitora was sent to Dressrosa to assist Doflamingo against Trafalgar Law and the Straw Hat Pirates. Issho has shown great disgust with working with Doflamingo, and when helping him fight Law purposely tried to harm him in the process. Doflamingo shows very little respect towards his high ranking status, and enjoys being able to manipulate him for as long as possible. In the anime, Doflamingo mentioned he planned on having Issho killed after he fulfilled his usefulness towards his plans. The Marines on Dressrosa started becoming enemies of Doflamingo when he activated the Birdcage on Dressrosa and forced some Marines to kill people against their will. When the Birdcage started closing in, several Marines including Fujitora helped in attempting to stop it. After Doflamingo was defeated by Luffy, the Marines quickly found and arrested him, wrapping his body in Seastone shackles. While being transported to Impel Down by Tsuru, he told her and the Marines present to tell the Celestial Dragons that in the coming war, they will be yanked down from their golden thrones atop the ivory towers of Mary Geoise and asked that a Newspaper be brought to him everyday while imprisoned in Impel Down, believing that it would be a good way to stave off boredom.

Tsuru

Before he became a Warlord, Tsuru constantly pursued him. He holds a certain degree of respect for her due to her tenacity in pursuing him while on duty. During his first appearance on Mary Geoise, Tsuru told Doflamingo to stop manipulating the other Marine officers into fighting each other before Sengoku’s arrival. After his arrest, Doflamingo informed her of the consequences of his removal from power, but Tsuru brushed him off and also refused to give him a newspaper when he asked for it.

Issho

As a strong opponent against the Warlord system, Marine Admiral Fujitora held a deep resentment towards Doflamingo, but was still obligated to assist him while he still was one. However, he chose to hold himself back during Doflamingo’s game so that Luffy and Law could defeat him on his behalf, stating that the Marines need to take responsibility for the evil pirates’ crimes. In turn, Doflamingo held a grudge against Fujitora and said that he is an idiot for not helping him fight against Luffy and Law.

Trafalgar D Water Law

Trafalgar Law used to be a subordinate of Doflamingo’s. Law knows of Doflamingo’s alias as the criminal underworld broker, “Joker”. Doflamingo, seeing talent in Law, declared his intentions to make him his right hand man in the future. Doflamingo also used to perceive Law as a little brother, and even stood up for him when Giolla falsely insinuated that Law’s disease was contagious. However, after discovering that the young Law ate the Ope Ope no Mi, Doflamingo’s motive became to use Law’s new-found ability to grant himself immortality, even if it means brainwashing Law into sacrificing his life for that purpose.

Law overheard this during Doflamingo’s last conversation with his younger brother, making the boy realize that Doflamingo actually cares very little for him. After finding out about Law’s treason, he ordered Vergo to murder him as brutally as possible, referring to it as a shame. Of all of Doflamingo’s subordinates who carry his symbol, Law has modified his to omit the cross-out mark. Upon Law taking hold of the situation between the alliance of Doflamingo, Kaidou and Caesar, Doflamingo became intensely furious at his former protégé. Because of Law, Doflamingo’s position as a Warlord was jeopardized, creating much hatred for his former colleague. It was later revealed that Doflamingo had not renounced his Warlord title and it was all a scheme to trap Law. Because of Law’s betrayal, Doflamingo has shown utter ruthlessness towards him in battle, such as shooting him point-blank with a flintlock loaded with lead ammunition. Even when Doflamingo offered a final ultimatum for Law, Law used it to mock Doflamingo one more time, causing the latter to furiously shoot the young pirate repeatedly. Upon learning that Law’s name contains the initial “D.” in it, Doflamingo became very shocked and even horrified, and more reckless in an attempt to rid himself of his natural enemy, despite desperately trying to deny his own fear with a fake front. As with Homing and Rosinante who betrayed him, Doflamingo claims that he will forgive Law with the embrace of death, believing that shooting him with a lead bullet is the most fitting way of execution.

Straw Hat Pirates

Doflamingo first learned of Luffy when he heard the cover up story about Crocodile’s defeat in Arabasta and had his crew search for the truth. Upon figuring out Luffy was responsible, Doflamingo immediately took an interest in the rookie but was visibly shocked to see the D. in his name. Despite this, Doflamingo had no ill-intent towards the Straw Hats and did nothing to hinder Luffy’s attempt to rescue Ace during the Summit War of Marineford. He found it amusing by Luffy’s invasion and his heritage even voicing how hilarious it might be if they escaped.

During the events of the Punk Hazard Arc, Law, who had become a traitor to the Donquixote Pirates, formed an alliance with the Straw Hats. Because their plan involved putting his partnership with Kaidou in jeopardy, Doflamingo aimed to eliminate the Straw Hat crew along with Law. Doflamingo sent Baby 5 and Buffalo to clean things up and retrieve Caesar, and upon seeing that Monet failed to detonate the island’s chemical weapon as ordered, he decided to enter the island himself. However, Baby 5 and Buffalo were incapacitated by the Straw Hat Pirates, and then Caesar was also captured after his failed attempt to escape alone to Dressrosa. After “resigning” from the Warlords, Doflamingo, with the help from his subordinates, set a trap for the Straw Hats at Dressrosa.

He used the Mera Mera no Mi, which he previously obtained after the Summit War of Marineford, as bait to lure Luffy to the Corrida Colosseum, knowing that he would not allow anyone else to have the fruit, and ordered Bellamy to assassinate him before the tournament ends. Doflamingo also had his subordinates attack the Straw Hats while they were separated such as having Giolla attacking the Thousand Sunny and Violet luring Sanji into an ambush. When it comes to it, Doflamingo will try to eliminate some of the Straw Hats himself as evident when he tried to attack the crew on the Thousand Sunny when the ship arrived at Green Bit and later attempted to kill Sanji during their confrontation. Upon witnessing Doflamingo brutally shooting a defeated Law three times, Luffy grew angry and swore to defeat Doflamingo and rescue Law. After hearing about Doflamingo’s atrocities, Franky and Robin became enthusiastic in helping Thunder Soldier and the dwarves succeed in their decisive operation in overthrowing the Warlord.

After Sugar’s curse was undone, Doflamingo trapped everyone on Dressrosa and coaxed his prisoners to go after the Straw Hats by putting a price on their heads. Doflamingo holds a strong grudge against Usopp as he put the highest price on his head, largely for exposing his true nature to the citizens of Dressrosa. When Luffy initially confronted Doflamingo, Doflamingo did not take him very seriously as he easily defeated the pirate in their first encounter. He liked to use subversive tactics to rile Luffy up, such as using Bellamy as a puppet. He willingly freed Bellamy when Luffy was confronting him below, knowing Bellamy’s loyalty to him and the fact that Luffy would be stalled since he considered Bellamy a friend. After he shot Law again, Doflamingo was excited to see Luffy’s reaction when he saw Law’s body. However, Doflamingo started developing a deep hatred of Luffy due to the Straw Hat Captain preventing him from killing Law several times. However, he was confident that Luffy was too weak to defeat him and took a very casual attitude in their battle. This changed when Luffy activated Gear 4 and unleashed devastating attacks on him, causing Doflamingo to consider Luffy a great threat and use awakened attacks on him. When Luffy was rendered immobile for ten minutes, Doflamingo stopped at nothing to find him due to being determined to make him pay for his actions. In their final confrontation, Doflamingo used his most powerful offensive and defensive moves to kill Luffy, going so far as to destroy what was left of Dressrosa, but was ultimately defeated by Luffy.

Convict Gladiators

The gladiator quarters are a prison which holds the convict gladiators. They were imprisoned for opposing the Donquixote Family and they have to keep fighting until they either die in the ring or gain their freedom by winning 1000 battles. However, even the strongest among them do not survive that long. Rebecca hates Doflamingo deeply because of his evil rule. She stood up to him and he condemned her to eternal life in the Colosseum as a “convict gladiator”. She wants to win the Mera Mera no Mi in order to be able to protect herself from him.

Riku Family

To become king of Dressrosa, Doflamingo orchestrated a nefarious plot to oust the Riku Family by first forcing Riku Doldo III to commit a heinous crime and making him a villain in the eyes of the citizens. In the process, he condemned the entire Riku bloodline to disgrace. In the attempt to eradicate the Riku Family entirely, Scarlett was killed, Rebecca’s father was transformed into a toy, and Doldo was forced into hiding while Rebecca was forced to become a gladiator at some point in time. After being defeated in the Colosseum battle royale, Doldo (as Ricky) expressed his hatred toward Doflamingo. In order to save her father’s life, Viola joined Doflamingo’s crew. While the crew respected and trusted her, she held Doflamingo to the greatest enmity and even asked Sanji to help her kill him. Rebecca and Viola later confronted Doflamingo to buy Luffy time, hoping to kill him. However, Doflamingo immobilized both of them and gleefully forced Rebecca to attack Viola, showing no mercy to his former officer. As shown at the start of Doflamingo’s takeover of Dressrossa, Riku acknowledges his infamous exploits and World Noble lineage and fully recognizes the threat he will pose to his country even way before the pirate occupied it.

Kyros

Doflamingo, after taking the throne from the Riku Royal Family, originally wished for Kyros to work under him as he had heard of the former gladiator’s reputation; however, Doflamingo was unwilling to spare anyone of the Riku Family, including Rebecca and Scarlett, as he told Kyros that he will kill them due to their lineage. Ultimately Kyros turned down Doflamingo’s offer as he saved his father-in-law, albeit with much difficultly as Kyros was turned into a toy; after losing his wife, as well as his daughter being unable to remember him, Kyros become one of the many victims to the tragedies caused by the Warlord. Having retained his free will, he plotted against Doflamingo over the years. The toy soldier is determined to overthrow him, even knowing that Doflamingo is a powerful foe. After Doflamingo falsified the news of his resignation, the soldier and his fellow rebels decided to initiate a decisive attack against him and planned to assault the underground world where Doflamingo conducts his illegal activities. Thunder Soldier deduced that by defeating the one person responsible for turning humans into toys and undoing her powers, Doflamingo’s grip on Dressrosa will weaken. After returning to being human again, Kyros wasted no time assaulting Doflamingo.

Sabo

Doflamingo was shocked to witness the Chief of Staff fighting in Luffy’s place during the tournament, but he had no knowledge of his true identity. However, once he was informed by his subordinates of Sabo’s reasons for coming to Dressrosa, the Heavenly Demon considered him a major threat to his criminal enterprise and gave him a three-star bounty on his true convict hit list after initiating the Birdcage.

Dwarves

Nine hundred years ago, the Donquixote Family started oppressing the Dwarves. During Donquixote Doflamingo’s reign, the Donquixote Family kidnapped 500 dwarves and put them to work in the Dark Factory of Dressrosa. The dwarves formed an anti-Doflamingo army, Riku Royal Army, headed by the Thunder Soldier. He also kidnapped and imprisoned the dwarf Princess Mansherry and manipulated his kidnapped dwarves slaves into believing she was ill and that SMILEs were the only cure. According to Riku Doldo III, the only reason Doflamingo has not killed Mansherry is due to her having consumed the Chiyu Chiyu no Mi which grants her healing abilities as well as the power to restore the SMILE Factory should any damage occur to it, making her abilities a valuable asset to Doflamingo’s operation.

Kouzuki Momonosuke

Although the two have not been formally introduced, Kouzuki Momonosuke shows a deep-rooted fear of Doflamingo. Despite his tough upbringing, witnessing the brutality of Doflamingo firsthand traumatized him, to the extent that seeing Doflamingo or even hearing his name causes him to lose control of his Devil Fruit transformation. Doflamingo wanted to capture Momonosuke because of the child’s connection to Kouzuki Oden, who was a part of the Roger Pirates, and therefore had knowledge of the “secrets of the world”. However, Momonosuke was not given such knowledge before Oden was executed. When Giolla attacked the Thousand Sunny, she demanded Nami’s group to hand the boy over to her.

Other
Crocodile

Doflamingo seems to know Crocodile, as they talked as though they knew each other before. While Crocodile threatened to kill Doflamingo for intruding in his business and mocking him, Doflamingo was willing to offer a partnership. However, he laughed at Doflamingo’s offer and attacked both Jozu and Doflamingo. Later, Doflamingo cut off Crocodile’s head, saying he would become jealous if Crocodile allied with Whitebeard yet refused his own alliance proposal. Crocodile regenerated and simply said that he was not allied with anyone and the two clashed. He also recognizes his strength, as Doflamingo didn’t believe he would be taken down by a Marine captain after hearing about his defeat at Arabasta.

Bartholomew Kuma

Doflamingo first learned of Kuma three and a half years ago when the man was enlisted into the seven warlords, interested by his moniker of a “Tyrant”. Doflamingo appears to have some knowledge on Kuma as he explains important details about his peer’s life to Emporio Ivankov and Monkey D. Luffy during the Paramount War. He informs them that Vegapunk had completed the final modifications on Kuma a few days ago. He gloats the Tyrant is dead, and he is now designated as PX-0, a walking corpse that serves the World Government. Doflamingo admits he does not know what agreement Kuma made with the government and he apparently has no knowledge Kuma was affiliated with the Revolutionaries.

Magellan

After being sent to Impel Down, Doflamingo found himself under the watch of the Vice Warden, Magellan. Doflamingo wondered out loud to Magellan on whether or not the government was planning to send someone to assassinate him, but Magellan didn’t bother to entertain his words. Later on, their relationship seemed to have improved enough for the two to hold cordial conversations on their thoughts about the future of the World, with Magellan even allowing Doflamingo to listen in to Vegapunk’s broadcast.

Donquixote Doflamingo › Abilities And Powers

Introduction

Overview

As the captain of the Donquixote Pirates and a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Donquixote Doflamingo is an extremely powerful pirate who had complete authority over the two thousand soldiers and eleven officers of his pirate crew. He was active in the realm of underworld brokering (including slavery, drugs, production and distribution of weapons of mass destruction, and Devil Fruit trafficking) in the New World, and the most resourceful and influential broker there was. In addition, he was the King of Dressrosa, which gave him dominion over an entire kingdom. However, upon his defeat at the hands of Luffy, Doflamingo was stripped of his title of king. Being able to deceive the entire world that he resigned from the Seven Warlords is considered to be an impossible feat by anyone less than a World Noble, as Doflamingo was indeed one, which gave him the privilege to do as he pleased on a global scale, without any fear of repercussions.

Upon his father dragging him away from such a luxurious life he lost all the privileges; however, he has managed to obtain knowledge of the Mary Geoise’s national treasure, which,…

Upon his father dragging him away from such a luxurious life he lost all the privileges; however, he has managed to obtain knowledge of the Mary Geoise’s national treasure, which, when used in combination with the powers of the Ope Ope no Mi, could shake the foundations of the world, a fact he used to blackmail the Celestial Dragons when they failed to kill him, allowing him to regain (to a limited extent) the privileges of a Celestial Dragon and mobilize CP0 to falsify his resignation from the Seven Warlords. Ten years before the current storyline, Doflamingo managed to steal monetary tributes meant for the World Nobles, blackmailing the World Government and allowing him to earn the status of Warlord. By that time, his reputation was also enough to intimidate King Riku Doldo III to try and gather a massive sum of 10,000,000,000 from Dressrosa’s citizens to avoid fighting against him. During the Summit War of Marineford, he faced off against former Warlord Crocodile and later emerged unharmed. Later he fought and defeated another of his colleagues, Gecko Moria (though he was aided by a small group of Pacifistas and Moria had yet to recover from his injuries from the war).

Whoever ordered him to take out Moria apparently had enough confidence in his strength to have him kill a fellow Warlord and was highly disappointed when he allowed Moria to escape before the final blow could be dealt. Doflamingo claimed that the one who gave him the order to kill Moria was of higher rank than the then fleet admiral, Sengoku, those being either the Five Elders or Commander-in-Chief Kong, or somebody else of high rank within the World Government. Doflamingo is such a formidable threat that Law suggested that if the pirate resigns from his position, Marine Headquarters will send their top fighters, the admirals, to capture him. This was also shown when Kuzan told Smoker to immediately warn Sakazuki about Doflamingo, and that the fleet admiral should dispatch the admirals. His superiority over the lower-ranked Marines was enforced when Doflamingo toyed around with Vice Admirals Mozambia and Stainless, and then later defeated Vice Admiral Smoker, both occasions with tremendous ease, showing that he has the ability to take down at least a Vice Admiral at Smoker’s level (who’s formidable as a Logia-type Devil Fruit user).

He is so strong that Law, a Super Rookie, and a Warlord, chose not to fight until he encountered Doflamingo to save energy and have a higher chance against him. Despite this, he defeated Law, without major inconvenience on two occasions, and both times he was about to kill him if it were not for the help he received. He similarly showed no fear of Admiral Fujitora. Aside from his tremendous combat skills, Doflamingo had an international level of influence, being a Warlord and an infamous pirate. Several countries at war relied upon him and his operations to provide weapons for them.

His defeat and capture made them unable to support themselves any longer and forced many of them to surrender. He was also known as Joker, the most powerful broker in the Underworld, and had Kaidou of the Beasts, who was considered to be one of the Four Emperors, as his main business partner. He had the Bellamy Pirates under his authority, as well as powerful subordinates such as Vice Admiral Vergo and Monet, as well as formerly Trafalgar Law, who was a fellow Warlord. He had Vergo installed into the Marines as a spy, thus having a trusted and convenient Marine under his command. Doflamingo was also associated with the former World Government scientist, Caesar Clown, but did not trust him and placed Monet as a deep cover agent to monitor his actions. He declared Caesar Clown to be his direct subordinate, which in turn instantly cleared all of Caesar’s crimes and could not be arrested by the government any longer. Upon being defeated this is rendered null and void, as such he is a criminal once again. In addition, Doflamingo was the owner of the once-most popular Human Auctioning House at the Sabaody Archipelago but gave it to Disco when he lost interest in slave trading in favor of the Summit War of Marineford, the SMILE business, and the New Age. His abandonment of the auction hall made it succumb to ruination, further demonstrating the power of his influence (and the consequences for the lack of it). He seemed to have a lot of connections as he was able to acquire the reborn Mera Mera no Mi.

Physical Abilities

Strength

Doflamingo has tremendous physical might; his great leg strength allowed him to produce a 360° razor-sharp shockwave, which was powerful enough to instantly cut through all three towers of Dressrosa’s royal palace in one swing, similar to Kaku’s Rankyaku: Amane Dachi but using only one leg and without the preparatory spinning. He also showed enough strength to equally clash against Crocodile’s hook with just a kick (their clash created a shock wave strong enough to push nearby Marines away). He blocked a Diable Jambe-enhanced kick from Sanji with his knee and defended against the subsequent barrage of kicks that followed with his arm without difficulty; an impressive feat since Sanji’s kicks can effortlessly break through buildings, users of Tekkai, and even the stronger-than-steel body of a Pacifista. He even managed to give Luffy a devastating kick even though he was defending with Armament Haki, a maneuver which Luffy was able to easily block an Energy Steroid enhanced Hody Jones with, while at the same time sustaining no injuries. Additionally, he was able to collapse a large section of a mountain, which he was deeply embedded in, by simply exiting from it.

Speed And Agility

Doflamingo possesses tremendous speed, agility, and reflexes. He was able to dodge Oars Jr.’s attacks with relative ease and completely jumped over Oars Jr.’s gigantic body. He was fast enough to escape through the eye of Crocodile’s sandstorm and exit unscathed. He is incredibly swift, being able to avoid a Gear 2 Luffy’s attacks by quickly disappearing from view.

Durability And Endurance

Doflamingo possesses a monstrous amount of resistance, durability, pain-tolerance, and stamina. A testament to this is that over the course of the series until the Dressrosa Arc, he had never been injured or shown exhaustion by any other character during a battle. This is noteworthy as he was present in the war between the Marines and Whitebeard Pirates, a battle in which most of the series’ strongest individuals, such as Sengoku, were in some way injured. Even as an 8-year-old—freshly out of the inner circle of the Celestial Dragons and therefore still physically weak from being pampered—he survived the various tortures the mob put him through, never breaking in nor begging, and instead swore revenge. Part of Rosinante’s reason for seeing his brother as a monster is this refusal to submit to the pain as Rosinante and Homing did.

He managed to prevent himself from being completely frozen by Kuzan, as shortly after the ice encased him, he shattered the frozen prison, showing absolutely no pain or discomfort from doing so. When Baby 5 attacked him and actually hit him with an explosive round, one that he did not even attempt to dodge, Doflamingo took no damage at all and continued his conversation, not even paying attention to it. He took a direct attack from Luffy’s Red Hawk, a move that caused even an Energy Steroid-enhanced Hody Jones to spew blood, and recovered in mere moments, though he did cough up a little bit of blood upon being struck. However, Law stated shortly afterwards that the attack only managed to inflict superficial damage to the Warlord. Even after taking Law’s Gamma Knife, which was then quickly followed by a point-blank Counter Shock, which ruptured his organs, he was able to stitch them back together and continue fighting Luffy. Despite taking numerous blows from Luffy in Gear 4, which sent Doflamingo rocketing through dozens of buildings and a mountain, he was still able to fight and even control his Haki and awakened Devil Fruit powers. Furthermore, despite being so severely beaten and injured, Doflamingo only showed few signs of fatigue and was able to fight dozens of powerful gladiators and defeat them all with little effort. Even after all this, it took Luffy’s tremendously powerful King Kong Gun to finally knock him unconscious. Despite the force of the impact being capable of devastating the entire island of Dressrosa, he was able to survive. He also has an exceptional recovery rate, as he quickly regained consciousness after his intense battle against Luffy and Law, and only had a few bandages to show for it.

Tactical Skills

He is well-versed in psychological warfare, as he prepared to use the Mera Mera no Mi as bait to break apart the alliance between Luffy and Law, believing that Luffy would never allow anyone else to have it. True enough, after learning of the fruit being offered as the grand prize at the Corrida Colosseum, Luffy immediately entered himself into the contest to try to win it. This displays great insight from Doflamingo towards other people. He also used his influence to have the media print out falsified news of his resignation from the Seven Warlords of the Sea in order to set a trap for his foes. Upon Sugar’s defeat, Doflamingo regained control over Dressrosa via turning everyone else against his enemies with prize money and the chance to survive, showing ample strategic preparation and flexibility. Doflamingo also demonstrated good analytical skills, as he was able to identify weaknesses of Law´s Devil Fruit after witnessing it several times and he was also able to determine the benefits and skills Luffy’s Gear 4 gives him after it was used against him.

Devil Fruit

Doflamingo ate the Ito Ito no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit which allows him to create and control strings. His strings are incredibly durable and razor-sharp, making them able to cut, pierce, block, bind, or bash his opponents. The strings are extremely thin, and some may even be invisible, making it almost impossible to notice and avoid them. The strings have incredible cutting power, which allow Doflamingo to effortlessly slice off his opponent’s body parts and cut weapons apart. He could even use his strings to slash a gigantic meteor into tiny pieces.

Depending on how he uses his power, Doflamingo can go as far as to cut an entire country to ribbons. He can also shoot strings at his opponent like a bullet, giving them great piercing power. He can combine and compress a large number of strings into rope, allowing him to attack with blunt force. He can also use strings to create an immensely sturdy protective barrier web, which can halt debris and powerful Haki-enhanced blows in their tracks. In the case of an emergency, Doflamingo can use strings to repair his internal organs as a crude way to staunch the worst effects, though it is not considered actual healing or regeneration. Doflamingo can attach strings to his opponent’s body, allowing him to puppeteer their body; he can make his victims move to his will by moving his fingers accordingly. Doflamingo mainly uses this power to force comrades to fight (and even kill) each other, while Doflamingo himself sits at the sidelines and watches. His victims are unable to resist his puppet strings and are therefore rendered completely helpless. He has shown himself capable of controlling large amounts of people at the same time without any apparent effort. This ability is even powerful enough to stop the incredibly physically strong “Diamond” Jozu in his tracks. He can also travel in midair by attaching his strings to clouds, as seen when he did so to cross over the seas to reach Punk Hazard from Dressrosa. Currently the only known limitation of his sky traveling ability is that he cannot use it where there are no clouds, meaning that if the sky is clear, he loses his ability to fly.

Awakening

Doflamingo has achieved Devil Fruit Awakening, granting him the power to transform non-living things in his surroundings into strings that he can freely manipulate.

Haki

Doflamingo is one of the very few people in the world who can use all three types of Haki.

Supreme King Haki

Doflamingo possesses the ability to use Supreme King Haki, a rare form of Haki that only one in several million people in the world can use. Doflamingo’s Supreme King Haki first awakened when he was around ten years old, when being pursued again by North Blue citizens who tried to continuously torture his family in revenge, knocking them all out, thus saving him. He would eventually gain control over it as shown when he knocked out the majority of the G-5 Marines at Punk Hazard decades later. In a clash with Luffy, their Haki created a notable effect similar to lightning.

Armament Haki

Doflamingo is an extremely skilled user of Armament Haki, which he used conjunction with his Devil Fruit ability to cut Smoker, a Logia user, seriously wounding him at Punk Hazard. He was also able to instinctively harden parts of his body and clothing enough to resist Luffy’s Jet Gatling without any visible injury and counterattack with a Haki-enhanced punch that injured Luffy and sent him flying back a considerable distance. His Armament Haki is strong enough to counter Law’s spatial slicing powers, though it was still not strong enough to defend against the sharpness of Law’s sword, as he cut his hand slightly after grasping the blade.

Observation Haki

Doflamingo possesses the ability to use Observation Haki.

Weapons

Doflamingo was given an obsidian-black flintlock pistol with luxurious gold plating by Trebol at 10 years old. Doflamingo was first seen using it after he defeated Trafalgar D. Water Law at Dressrosa, firing three shots in rapid succession to brutally wound Law. It was loaded with lead ammunition, infecting Law with lead poison as a mocking reference to Law’s past with the Amber Lead Syndrome. This pistol was apparently reserved for Doflamingo to kill people he particularly disliked, as he used it to kill his father and brother. 10 years ago, he was also shown using a sword when he nearly executed King Riku Doldo III.

Donquixote Doflamingo › History

Introduction

Past

Childhood

Doflamingo was born the eldest son of Donquixote Homing, a member of the Donquixote Family, one of the twenty royal families that formed the World Government and moved to Mary Geoise. Two years after his birth he would gain a younger brother named Donquixote Rosinante. However, when Doflamingo was eight years old, his father, Homing, chose to cease being a World Noble and live a normal, but still somewhat well-off, life along with his wife and two children. After moving to an unknown northern country, Doflamingo was still accustomed to his old lifestyle as a World Noble and arrogantly expected the commoners to bow for him. Despite his father renouncing his World Noble title, the people who they tried to live among resented them due to their longstanding hatred for the World Nobles.

Subsequently, the people of the country persecuted him and his family. They burned down their mansion and drove the family into a makeshift shack on a junk pile, forcing the children to eat out of garbage cans out of desperation. When Homing called the World Nobles for their help, only to be rejected, Doflamingo overheard this and was silent with shock….

Subsequently, the people of the country persecuted him and his family. They burned down their mansion and drove the family into a makeshift shack on a junk pile, forcing the children to eat out of garbage cans out of desperation. When Homing called the World Nobles for their help, only to be rejected, Doflamingo overheard this and was silent with shock. Sometime later, Doflamingo’s mother died from illness, due to the deplorable household they were forced into. Eventually, the angry citizens tracked them down to their shack and, unable to contain their anger at the former World Nobles, attacked Doflamingo, Rosinante, and Homing.

The three Donquixotes were lynched and severely beaten, but they ultimately survived, and it was then that Doflamingo swore to kill everyone, which horrified his father, brother and the mob. The memory of this experience would stay with Doflamingo for many years, and would go on to blame his father for all this suffering from thereon. At some point, Doflamingo met Vergo, Trebol, Pica, and Diamante and displayed the ability to use Supreme King Haki, knocking out a mob who tried to lynch him. Impressed, Trebol believed Doflamingo to be chosen by heaven and then gave Doflamingo the Ito Ito no Mi and a pistol, giving Doflamingo the power to exact revenge on anyone he wanted to kill. At the age of ten, Doflamingo then decided to kill his father to regain his former status as a World Noble. With the pistol gifted by Trebol, Doflamingo shot Homing in the head while ignoring Rosinante’s pleas to not kill him. He then returned to Mary Geoise with his father’s head in an attempt to regain his old status as a World Noble, but he was rejected as one of a “family of traitors” by the Celestial Dragons. Since then, he swore revenge on the Celestial Dragons for rejecting him. Doflamingo managed to flee Mary Geoise with knowledge of the Celestial Dragon’s national treasure, which would later allow him to blackmail his former compatriots to grant him the equal rights that he lost. After returning to the island of Downs in the North Blue from Mary Geoise, Vergo, Trebol, Pica, and Diamante then elected Doflamingo as their leader and swore to build him up into the next Pirate King and promised to never let anything stand in his way. Their devotion for him is such that they would kill any and everyone who would so much as offend Doflamingo in even the slightest manner. Trebol shot down some thugs who hurt Doflamingo and they went as far as burning down an entire town for having poor pavement that made Doflamingo trip.

Ascent To Piracy

When he was 17, he was present at Gol D. Roger’s execution in Loguetown, smiling during the event. After Rosinante went missing for 14 years, the 24-year-old Doflamingo finally reunited with his younger brother. However, Rosinante was refusing to speak, so Doflamingo assumed that his brother had lost his voice from a traumatic incident. About one year after this, Vergo was enlisted in the Marines under Doflamingo’s orders, and he ascended the ranks for fifteen years, eventually becoming a vice admiral, while keeping his true identity hidden from everyone outside of his affiliates, thus granting Doflamingo the most trusted and convenient Marine officer available to him.

Vergo’s mission left the Corazon title for Rosinante to succeed. At age 25, Doflamingo encountered a 10-year-old Trafalgar Law in North Blue at a port town called Spider Miles. While strapping himself with bombs, Law asked Doflamingo to let him join. After Law had been with the crew for about a week, Doflamingo was having a meal with his “family”. Law held a grudge against Corazon for throwing him out of a window, but Doflamingo warned Law not to lay a hand on his brother.

The crew then learned that Law was sick with the Amber Lead Syndrome. Giolla thought the disease was contagious until Doflamingo corrected her. They then heard how Law escaped the extermination of Flevance. Later, Doflamingo perused a book about Flevance, while drinking some wine, and fell asleep while putting the book on top of his face. After Doflamingo woke up from a nightmare about his childhood, Giolla and Machvise brought Law before him.

He then announced that Law became an official member of the crew. Law reminded Doflamingo that he would die in three years time, but Doflamingo went on to explain that their “family” dealt with underworld businesses and told Law of a possibility for survival: obtaining a Devil Fruit power that could heal him. He further explained that if Law was lucky to find one before his life expired, he would raise and train him to be his right-hand man in ten years. Doflamingo later noticed that Corazon had a wound, but he wrote a note saying that he was attacked by an enemy. During the next two years, Doflamingo and his crew spread their influence as they traveled to the Grand Line.

They participated in various activities such as looting, making business deals, and collecting bounties. Doflamingo also had his crew members teach Law various forms of combat. While the crew engaged in a battle with the Marines out at sea, Law and Corazon suddenly left. Senor Pink showed Doflamingo a note from Corazon, saying that he left to find a cure for Law’s illness. Six months later, Doflamingo contacted them via Den Den Mushi.

After asking them about their search for a cure, Doflamingo asked Corazon and Law to return to the crew. He also revealed that he had found information on the Ope Ope no Mi and wanted Corazon to eat it and heal Law, unaware that his younger brother already possessed another Devil Fruit power. He explained to Corazon about his plan to steal the Ope Ope no Mi from a trade that was going to occur on Rubeck Island and told Corazon to rendezvous with him on Swallow Island three days before the exchange. After speaking with his younger brother, Doflamingo then had a meeting with Diamante, Trebol, and Pica. They expressed their suspicion of Corazon being a Marine informant, seeing no Marine soldiers knew of their whereabouts during Corazon’s absence.

However, Doflamingo found it uncomfortable to believe that his younger brother was a traitor. Doflamingo and his crew later arrived at Minion Island where the pirates who had the Ope Ope no Mi were based. After his arrival, he was informed of Corazon’s treachery by Vergo. Doflamingo expressed his disappointment and deduced that Corazon had stolen the Devil Fruit. He then used Birdcage to prevent Corazon from escaping.

Doflamingo later confronted Rosinante after he was captured and beaten by the rest of the Donquixote Pirates. Rosinante pointed his pistol at him and revealed his Marine rank. Doflamingo then demanded the whereabouts of Law and the Ope Ope no Mi. Rosinante revealed that Law already ate it and misinformed him that Law escaped the birdcage safely and was in the custody of the Marines. When Buffalo and Baby 5 informed Doflamingo that they had intercepted a transmission saying that Marines had taken a boy into custody, Doflamingo dispelled the birdcage and prepared to go after Law. After Rosinante firmly declared that Law would not obey him, Doflamingo shot Rosinante multiple times before leaving. When they returned to their ship, the crew came under fire by Tsuru’s squadron, though managed to escape. One year later, Doflamingo and his crew held an auction for the Goru Goru no Mi, though he did not intend to actually sell it. Gild Tesoro went to the auction and sent criminals to kill many people, allowing him to gain possession of the Devil Fruit. Doflamingo got angry and sent assassins to kill Tesoro, but they all failed.

Takeover Of Dressrosa

Ten years ago, a 31-year-old Doflamingo started building his powerful reputation by stealing money from the World Nobles and blackmailing the World Government to attain the position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. One night, Doflamingo appeared at Dressrosa in Riku Doldo III’s chambers. After Riku recognized him as a descendant of the Donquixote Family and commented on his feats as a pirate, Doflamingo stated his demand: a 10 billion fee until the dawn of the next day in exchange for leaving the country alone. To avoid war, Riku Doldo agreed to the demand. In reality, Doflamingo had no interest in keeping his word and he moved onto taking over the country anyways just as the money was being gathered.

From above a building, he used his Devil Fruit ability to control Riku and made him rampage in the city of Sebio. As panic and confusion spread throughout the kingdom, Doflamingo proceeded to take control of the soldiers as well, making them attack innocent civilians against their will. As he gleefully watched from the shadows, Doflamingo and his top three subordinates waited for the right moment to step in and act as heroes in the eyes of Dressrosa’s citizens. While Doflamingo continued to control Riku Doldo III, his subordinates managed to take control of the castle with the help of an inside spy (Monet) and also took Princess Viola hostage. Once the citizens’ trust for their king was shattered and they gave in to despair, Doflamingo, Diamante, Pica and Trebol appeared and defeated the king and his army, passing themselves off as heroes and setting the grounds for the Donquixote Pirates’ takeover of the island.

He then held Doldo captive at the palace. When Kyros arrived to confront Doflamingo, he told the former gladiator that he had sent subordinates to kill his wife and child. When Doflamingo was about to execute Doldo, Kyros attempted to attack him, losing his leg and getting transformed into a toy by Sugar in the process. Despite this, Kyros managed to escape the palace with Doldo. After that night, Doflamingo ascended to the throne.

He claimed that the former king was responsible for making Dressrosa a poor country and promised wealth to the citizens. In the meantime, he had his subordinates hunt down anyone with an affiliation to the previous king. Because he found Viola’s Devil Fruit ability to be useful, he spared Riku Doldo’s life on the condition that she would aid the Donquixote Pirates. With the castle bearing his smiley, the Donquixote Pirates used the island as their base. Doflamingo used his weapon trading to instigate wars by supplying arms to various factions including the enemies of the Kano Country.

Doflamingo, using Sugar’s Devil Fruit ability, turned those who opposed him into living toys, erasing their past and making the people close to them forget who they were. In addition, he enacted two laws that created segregation between humans and toys. The Bellamy Pirates also swore their allegiance to Doflamingo, and were permitted to use his Jolly Roger. Sometime after gaining a powerful influence in the underworld while using the alias Joker, Doflamingo formed a three-way alliance with the rogue Marine scientist, Caesar Clown, and Kaidou of the Four Emperors, in order to create the SAD and SMILEs, to create an army of Zoan-type users within the New World. However, needing Caesar for the SAD production and not trusting him, Doflamingo assigned Vergo to act as an intermediate.

Doflamingo provided cover for Caesar’s research with the assistance of Vergo, who officially reported the kidnapped children to have died in accidents at sea. He also placed Monet as a deep cover agent to monitor the deranged scientist. He murdered all eight of Baby 5’s boyfriends and destroyed the towns they originated from on the way, due to wanting to protect her from rash decisions because she was unable to refuse any request. Eight years ago, the Donquixote Pirates made an attempt on Gild Tesoro’s life out of revenge for stealing the Goru Goru no Mi, but Tesoro’s crew was too strong for them to defeat. With either side at even odds with each other, Doflamingo decided to work with Tesoro as a business partner instead and gave him connections in the World Government. It is unknown what Doflamingo intended to do to Tesoro in the future. Some time later, Sugar came to Doflamingo with news that a new replacement Warlord of the sea named Bartholomew Kuma was just elected, with Doflamingo being interested in his former title as a “tyrant”. After Crocodile’s defeat at Arabasta two years ago, Doflamingo did not believe the official reports of a Marine defeating him. He noticed Luffy’s increase in bounty and asked Trebol to gather information about him. He was quite shocked that Luffy was a ‘D’.

Sky Island Saga

Jaya Arc

At Mary Geoise, Doflamingo and Bartholomew Kuma attended a meeting about the arrest and dismissal of Crocodile as a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Bored while waiting for the meeting to start, Doflamingo used his Devil Fruit powers to force Vice Admirals Stainless and Mozambia to fight each other. When Tsuru told him to stop, Doflamingo made the two Marines draw their swords, but just then Sengoku walked into the room and ordered Doflamingo to stop. As the meeting began, Doflamingo admitted that business on his island was doing well, which Sengoku found disconcerting. Dracule Mihawk then arrived, which surprised Doflamingo, but stated that he was there to be merely a spectator. They were then interrupted by Laffitte, a former sheriff exiled from the West Blue, who wished to put forward his captain’s name for appointment to the position of Warlord. Although the others were unfamiliar with the name “Teach”, Laffitte promised that they were working to make the Blackbeard Pirates more renowned, and Doflamingo was intrigued.

Water 7 Saga

Long Ring Long Land Arc

At Mock Town Bellamy and Sarquiss were having an unexpected battle against one another. The reason behind the battle was the unexpected return of their true leader: Warlord of the Sea, Donquixote Doflamingo. He felt upset that his “symbol” was being used in shame to deride foolish dreams, such as the existence of a city of gold in the sky. Although Bellamy begged for forgiveness and stated that he would never shame the flag ever again, Doflamingo saw no use for him, and used his powers to have Sarquiss attack him. With this done, Doflamingo touted the beginning of a “New Age” where only worthy pirates exist, and the trash is abandoned.

Summit War Saga

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

Doflamingo was revealed to be the owner of the Auction House. Disco called Doflamingo to help out since the Auction House was owned by him. Doflamingo told Disco that slavery was old news and that they were now in the age of SMILEs. He then told Disco to keep the Auction House and never call him again. Disco desperately tried to convince Doflamingo to help, but he refused. He mentioned that all of the Warlords were assembling at Mary Geoise to set up the battle to come: the Seven Warlords vs. the Whitebeard Pirates.

Amazon Lily Arc

Upon the looming threat of the Whitebeard Pirates, he answered the call of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to battle Whitebeard and join the war. At Mary Geoise, he dined with the other Warlords, except for Jinbe and Boa Hancock.

Marineford Arc

In the anime, it showed him sitting in a guest room with the other Warlords at Marineford during the assembling of troops, quietly anticipating the battle ahead. When the broadcasted execution of Ace started, he, alongside Kuma, Mihawk, Gecko Moria, and Hancock, stood ready for the war. When Sengoku announced the father of Ace was Gol D. Roger, Doflamingo was surprised and greatly amused by this revelation. While the Marines were in panic as two tsunamis advanced towards them, Doflamingo laughed at the “Legendary Pirate”, meaning Whitebeard, while the great pirate himself also laughed.

Until the arrival of Little Oars Jr., Doflamingo was content to watch the battle unfold from the sidelines, commenting that things were getting interesting. When Oars Jr. managed to get to the plaza of Marineford, the pirate attacked Doflamingo in an attempt to take down at least one Warlord before falling over. However, Doflamingo dodged the attack with ease by jumping in the air, and in the process sliced off Oars Jr.’s leg, laughing all the while, much to Moria’s anger. Doflamingo was later confronted by the Whitebeard Pirates’ 13th Division Commander ‘Water Buffalo’ Atmos.

When Atmos questioned him what was funny, Doflamingo responded by saying that being in the core of the Era “cracked” him up. Doflamingo then used his ability on Atmos, forcing him to attack his own comrades. The Warlord himself shouted that terms for things that changed over time. People who had not seen war had different meanings for “Marine” or “Pirate”. Doflamingo stated that the ground was neutral and whoever was at the top would define Justice, thus shouting that Justice would prevail.

When Luffy and his party finally arrived at Marineford, Doflamingo was delighted to see that all the current and former Warlords of the Sea (excluding Blackbeard) were assembled and, at the same time, amused that Luffy, the “famous rookie”, was there as well. When Sengoku revealed that Luffy’s father is actually Dragon, Doflamingo commented that Emporio Ivankov’s appearance at the battlefield and fighting on Luffy’s side finally made sense. During Ivankov’s confrontation with Kuma, Doflamingo asked Ivankov if he had any prior relationship with Kuma before stating that Kuma was dead. When Luffy made his way to where Ivankov and Kuma were battling and recognized Kuma, Ivankov told Doflamingo that Kuma was standing before him and cannot be dead. After Ivankov noted that something was wrong with Kuma, Doflamingo spoke on Kuma’s behalf, saying once again that the man standing before Luffy and Ivankov was not the Kuma they knew, as Vegapunk had finished his modifications on the former Bartholomew Kuma.

Doflamingo then explained to Ivankov the process Kuma had volunteered to undergo: His body was converted into a “Pacifista”, with bits and pieces of him being modified at a time. Ivankov said that Doflamingo was lying as Kuma hated the World Government and would never work with them. While Doflamingo admitted that he did not know what kind of deal Kuma and the World Government made, he went on to say that until a few days ago, he had retained his personality, but now became a walking corpse with no human memory, following the World Government’s every command: PX-0. As Jozu attempted to slam Crocodile again with his diamond body, he was stopped by Doflamingo, who was riding on his back and controlling his movement. While Crocodile seemed antagonistic towards Doflamingo, Doflamingo asked if he and Crocodile could team up.

However, Crocodile only laughed at this, and asked Doflamingo if he thought they were on the same level, instead mocking him, saying what Doflamingo was actually asking was to serve under Crocodile. Doflamingo laughed right back saying he was hoping for Crocodile to be rational, to which Crocodile responded by saying that if he was, he would not be here in the first place. He then attacked both Doflamingo and Jozu with a massive sandstorm. When Whitebeard gets stabbed by Squard, Doflamingo was grinning. After Whitebeard used his Devil Fruit to tilt all of Marineford and a good portion of the ocean, Doflamingo laughed, saying Whitebeard was a “crazy old guy”.

After Crocodile saved Ace by blowing away the executioners, Doflamingo used his powers to decapitate Crocodile, apparently out of envy that Crocodile had “joined up” with Whitebeard and not with him earlier on. Crocodile responded that he joined with no one. With that settled, Doflamingo engaged Crocodile in battle. The battle was interrupted at a certain point, since Crocodile was later fighting with Mihawk. When Luffy managed to free his brother, Doflamingo said that it would be a lot funnier if they escaped Marineford, so he did not want to fight them, which angered Momonga. Later, when the Blackbeard Pirates showed up, Doflamingo laughed, saying that this was the best and that things were really getting awesome now. When Whitebeard met his end at the hands of the Blackbeard Pirates, Doflamingo once again laughed. When Shanks arrived and called for peace between the pirates and the Marines, Doflamingo casually stood where he was, smiling as usual.

Postwar Arc

With the war over, Doflamingo accompanied several Pacifista units to the backstreets of Marineford, where they attacked Moria. Doflamingo stated that Moria had gotten too weak, and thus could no longer fulfill the duties of the Warlords, and that he was going to make it look like Moria died in the war. When Moria asked if it was Sengoku who was responsible, Doflamingo pointed up and told him to “try higher”. Later, Doflamingo informed a government official that Moria had disappeared into thin air before he could deal the final blow. Doflamingo did not seem to care since Moria was critically injured and would probably die soon anyway. He even joked that there was a chance Moria would even come back as a zombie, which befit him. The official, however, was clearly not as amused and scolded Doflamingo for not completing the job properly. Doflamingo then stepped up to the official saying that he did not care about the powers in the World Government and warned the official that he would quit the Warlords if he felt like it.

During The Timeskip

Sometime during the timeskip, Doflamingo managed to come into the possession of the Mera Mera no Mi, which was reborn after Ace’s demise. He kept it with him in the hopes of using it to lure Luffy to him, having developed an interest in the Supernova. After Bellamy presented Doflamingo with a gold pillar from Skypiea, the Warlord gave him a second chance.

Dressrosa Saga

Punk Hazard Arc

After the Straw Hats, the G-5 Marines led by Vice Admiral Smoker, and Kin’emon intruded on Punk Hazard, Doflamingo gave Caesar Clown permission to eliminate them. He also threatened Monet with death if she let something happen to Caesar. Doflamingo was relaxing on Dressrosa when he was contacted by Vergo, who told him that Law had entered the SAD production room. Meanwhile, Baby 5 started assaulting Doflamingo with the intent of killing him. While Doflamingo brushed her off, he ordered Vergo to eradicate Law mercilessly, but to also be cautious of Luffy, saying “that kid” possesses Supreme King Haki and to kill him if he threatened Caesar’s life.

Once his attacker was subdued, Doflamingo contacted Caesar and Monet. He informed them that he was going to send Buffalo and Baby 5 to Punk Hazard as support. He also told Caesar and Monet that once they arrived, everyone was to return to Dressrosa after they had completed their missions. When Vergo started to battle both Law and Smoker, Doflamingo monitored the battle via a Den Den Mushi under Vergo’s coat. After retrieving his heart, Law spoke to Doflamingo, and claimed that he would defeat Vergo and Luffy would do likewise to Caesar, leaving him without SAD.

Law then started taunting Doflamingo, and said that his overconfidence would be his undoing. Doflamingo, in turn, reminded Law of a beating that Vergo gave him some time ago. Law then cut Vergo and continued to taunt, leaving Doflamingo without his smile and angered by Law’s words. Buffalo called Doflamingo to report that they had found Caesar, looking tattered after being sent flying out of his lab and crashing into a tanker. Doflamingo was surprised at first, but then smiled.

He ordered Buffalo to retrieve Caesar and return to Dressrosa immediately. Doflamingo began laughing under his breath, saying that with Caesar in his custody again, he could continue to make SAD. Later, Monet called Doflamingo. He informed her of the defeat of Vergo and Caesar Clown before apologizing for being mean to her. He then told her to press a button that would activate a weapon that would kill everyone on the island except for Caesar.

Monet replied that she was already in front of the button and bid Doflamingo farewell as she prepared to press the button. After that, he called Vergo to thank him for his hard work before the SAD room exploded. However, before Monet could press the switch, Caesar unknowingly stabbed her heart, killing her. Realizing that something was wrong, Doflamingo decided to personally go to Punk Hazard, by flying over the ocean. His subordinates complained about his rash behavior and how he left them behind.

Along the way he encountered a life raft from the SAD tanker ship. On it he found the severed but alive heads of his crew mates Baby 5 and Buffalo. They apologized profusely to him, but he told them that they were only following his orders. A Den Den Mushi of Law’s began to speak to Doflamingo. Doflamingo noted Law was a hard person to get a hold of.

He asked Law what he had done with his crew mates’ bodies, but Law told him he did not know. Doflamingo laughed at Law’s confidence, warning him not to anger him. Law responded that the only one who was going to be angered is Kaidou, one of the Four Emperors. Law told Doflamingo that once he finds out he can no longer produce the SAD he will not be able to bargain with him and will be killed. Doflamingo asked what Law wanted in exchange for getting Caesar Clown back.

Law demanded that he abdicate the position of Warlord that he had held for a decade and return to being a common pirate. That once he was no longer protected, the admirals would hunt him down. Law told Doflamingo if the newspapers do not say that he has resigned, their negotiations would be over. After this, Doflamingo was left simmering in rage over what to do next. After the Straw Hats departed from Punk Hazard, Doflamingo arrived on the island.

He promptly reattached the heads of his subordinates while gliding in from the sea. He used Supreme King Haki, which knocked out a majority of the G-5 Marines. Doflamingo then demanded them to tell him where the Straw Hat Pirates and Law went. They opened fire, ignoring Smoker’s order to stand down as Doflamingo used his string-based powers to slice apart the crew and their weapons. Still enraged, he demanded the location of the pirates.

Smoker confronted Doflamingo and lied about not knowing where Law and the Straw Hats went, and that he intended to report this to Vice Admiral Vergo. Annoyed, Doflamingo said that Smoker knew too much and used the power of Haki to cut him down. The remaining G-5 Marines despaired, as Doflamingo promised he would kill them as well and catch up to Law and the Straw Hats. Before he could deliver the finishing blow, the former Admiral Kuzan appeared suddenly and demanded that he step aside. He ignored him and tried to finish Smoker off. Before he was able to make another move, Kuzan froze him solid but Doflamingo broke out of his ice. He then told Kuzan that he had no intention of engaging him. He then questioned briefly just what he had become, saying that the rumors about him were not good, before leaving with Baby 5 and Buffalo. The next morning, the newspaper reported that he had given in to Law’s demands and resigned from the Warlords, as well as abdicating his position as monarch of Dressrosa. He sat alone in his room, letting a record player drown out the noise from outside. He scowled waiting for Law’s call, then the Den Den Mushi rang, and he picked it up.

Dressrosa Arc

Doflamingo answered the call and told Law that he had resigned from the Warlords. Luffy suddenly interrupted the call and angrily asked Doflamingo if he was the boss of Caesar. Doflamingo asked Luffy where he had been the past two years, but Luffy refused to answer. He then stated his desire to see Luffy and informed the Straw Hat captain that he had something that Luffy would want to get, which Luffy thought was meat. Law then took back the Den Den Mushi and informed Doflamingo that he would return Caesar as promised.

Law then told him that he could pick up Caesar at Green Bit, an island north of Dressrosa. Doflamingo ordered Baby 5 to find Trebol and let him come to him along with the Mera Mera no Mi. While waiting, Doflamingo showed gratitude to Diamante, for the profitable Corrida Colosseum that he supervised. Afterwards Trebol arrived, but Doflamingo remarked that he was standing too close to him. Trebol gave him the Devil Fruit inside a small chest, and Doflamingo left it in the capable hands of Diamante and correctly asserted that Luffy would definitely come to make sure nobody gained Ace’s power.

When the Dressrosa citizens panicked over Doflamingo’s “abdication” from the throne, Doflamingo was annoyed and waited for CP0 to arrive and clear up this “misunderstanding”. Doflamingo granted Bellamy an opportunity for an officer position by allowing him to compete in a tournament at the Colosseum. After Bellamy lost the tournament, Doflamingo gave him an order to assassinate Luffy before the tournament ends. However, Doflamingo had no confidence that Bellamy would be able to succeed in the assassination. Having considered Bellamy an eyesore, Doflamingo ordered Dellinger to kill him.

By the time Sanji revealed to Law that Doflamingo had never resigned from his position as a Warlord and that it was actually a gambit to fool Law into returning Caesar, Doflamingo was approaching Green Bit right on time for his appointment with Law, laughing maniacally. After Doflamingo and Admiral Fujitora arrived at the exchange site, Law told Doflamingo that he had become aware of his deception and was surprised that he was able to use the powers of the World Government. After Law explained that only the World Nobles have the authority to beguile the whole world, Doflamingo replied that it was way more complicated and that he really wanted to kill Law. Since the deal was off, Law refused to release Caesar. Upon seeing Fujitora, Doflamingo commented on how he and Ryokugyu were beasts in terms of power.

Fujitora explained that he was aware that Doflamingo was not following the rules as a Warlord and that he noticed that Caesar had referred to Doflamingo as Joker. Doflamingo simply replied that if the admiral wanted to investigate him, he had better be prepared to back up his claims. After Law declared that he and Luffy were indeed in an alliance, Fujitora took away Law’s title and used his gravity ability to bring down a meteor. Before the meteor impacted, Doflamingo, Fujitora, and Law used their abilities to reduce the meteor to pieces. After emerging unscathed, they faced off in a three-way confrontation.

As the battle continued on, Doflamingo smiled, commenting that Fujitora was not showing any mercy. After Law contacted Tony Tony Chopper, Doflamingo directly confronted him and demanded that he return Caesar’s heart. He informed Law that Luffy had fallen for a trap at the Corrida Colosseum and ordered him to surrender, asserting that his alliance was finished. Law was later defeated and Doflamingo took what seemed to be Caesar’s heart. As Law lay injured on the ground with Fujitora sitting next to him, Doflamingo explained some history of the Donquixote Family, such as them being one of the First Twenty.

Doflamingo went on to explain that while he was a World Noble in the past, he remained one no longer. As Caesar ran towards Doflamingo, begging him to return his heart, Law stated that he never said that the heart belonged to Caesar. Doflamingo then realized that the heart belonged to a Marine instead. While Fujitora was distracted, Law used Room to escape. He then grabbed Caesar and made a run for it.

Doflamingo quickly pursued him and became confused when he saw Law make for the bridge, knowing that it led to Dressrosa, Donquixote’s home territory, and when he saw the Thousand Sunny, he understood Law’s intention. He flew towards the Sunny, intending to destroy it but Sanji intercepted him. Despite Sanji’s best efforts to fend off Doflamingo, he was soon immobilized by Doflamingo’s strings. When Doflamingo was about to deal a lethal blow to Sanji, Law intervened by using Shambles. He then teleported Sanji, Caesar, and himself to the Thousand Sunny.

Doflamingo continued to assault the Sunny along with Fujitora and his Marine platoon. Law then took Giolla hostage, halting Doflamingo’s attack and giving Nami’s group enough time to escape using a Coup de Burst. Once the crew on the Thousand Sunny escaped with Caesar Clown and the Marines headed for Dressrosa, Law and Doflamingo stood opposite from one another on the iron bridge. Law then told his former captain that he was ending his alliance with the Straw Hats, because once they stop the production of SMILE, Kaidou would target Doflamingo. Law also revealed that his goal was to make Doflamingo pay for what he did thirteen years ago, even if it cost him his life.

After releasing Giolla, Law stated that he was not fighting for revenge but for the will of someone else. Doflamingo and Law began to clash, destroying the iron bridge in the process. During their battle, Law used his “Mes” attack and nicked Doflamingo’s cheek as he maneuvered out of the way. He retaliated with a powerful kick, launching Law into the air. Doflamingo used his Tamaito ability to fire a piercing string from his index finger like a bullet, wounding Law’s left shoulder.

Doflamingo then taunted Law, offering him advice to flee into Dressrosa for cover. Diamante suddenly contacted Doflamingo via Den Den Mushi, informing him about Violet’s betrayal. Doflamingo then ordered him to send Lao G to the SMILE factory. He began questioning Law’s plan, stating that he had overestimated the amount of time he would be able to distract him from their mission. He asked why Law was putting so much trust in them even though he was using them.

Law responded that he believed that “D” will bring forth another storm. The battle then raged across Dressrosa and concluded right outside the Corrida Colosseum, with Law ultimately defeated by Doflamingo. Infuriated at his defiance, Doflamingo fired off three shots into Law from a flintlock. Doflamingo smiled as Law fell unconscious. Doflamingo then told the witnessing citizens about the ploy Law had orchestrated earlier that day.

Zoro and Kin’emon then rushed Doflamingo to rescue Law. Zoro was intercepted by Fujitora and Doflamingo kicked Kin’emon away when he was about to grab Law. Doflamingo offered the Straw Hats to the Admiral if he assisted him. Issho merely told him that he would decide once they were done talking. With Law in tow, Doflamingo headed back to the palace with Issho.

While Franky attempted to breach the Toys House, Doflamingo heard the commotion through a Den Den Mushi and asked Fujitora if the Marines should do something about the Straw Hats. At the palace, Doflamingo later spoke with Riku Doldo and commented that Rebecca was lucky to win her group’s battle royale at the Corrida Colosseum. He then expressed his displeasure of both Doldo and Rebecca competing for the Mera Mera no Mi and Viola’s betrayal. He was also confident that Luffy could not leave the colosseum as a human, Franky would not be able to penetrate the Toys House, and the Straw Hats would not ever be able to reach the underground. When the Marines made a move to arrest Franky at the Toys House, Doflamingo thanked Fujitora.

The admiral responded by telling Doflamingo not to mistake him as an ally. He went on to say that all he was trying to do was minimize the damage done to the populace and he would deal with Doflamingo later. He then stated his desire to abolish the Seven Warlords of the Sea system. After Fujitora mentioned the Arabasta incident, Doflamingo tried to kick him. The admiral blocked his kick while warning him about the consequences of his transgressions.

Doflamingo assumed that Fujitora would try to eliminate him, but the admiral stated that he would be on friendly terms with him for the time being. While watching the finals via a visual monitor, he then heard that some intruders, including Luffy, had breached the palace rampart tower. After learning that Luffy was no longer at the colosseum, he furiously asked who was the Lucy fighting in the finals. Later, Doflamingo learned that the Straw Hats were allied with the dwarves from Tontatta Kingdom and some of the crew members had infiltrated the underground world and were targeting Sugar. He then interrogated Law, who firmly stated that he had ended his alliance with the Straw Hats and knew nothing about their intentions.

Doflamingo then questioned Riku Doldo III, who remained silent. After Usopp’s battle with Trebol in the underground trade port, Doflamingo ordered Trebol to move Sugar to the royal palace. Trebol assured him that there was nothing for him to worry about as Usopp was completely subdued. Doflamingo was then shocked to hear that Sugar lost consciousness and her curse has been broken. As the toys transformed back into their original forms, Doflamingo became distraught as his hold on Dressrosa started to crumble.

Kyros then took Doflamingo by surprise and decapitated him. When Pica appeared from the floor in his stone form and held Doflamingo’s body and severed head in his hand, Doflamingo revealed himself to be still alive and prepared to implement a “Birdcage”. As Kyros attempted to attack the copy again, the real Doflamingo appeared behind Kyros and attempted to behead him with a kick, slicing the palace in the process. Luffy managed to save Kyros from a fatal blow. Doflamingo and his copy then tried to attack both Luffy and Kyros, but they jumped out of the way.

Luffy retaliated by using Jet Gatling but Doflamingo blocked the attack. His copy then struck Luffy from behind and he followed by giving Luffy a punch to the face, knocking him back. After informing Doldo that he planned to create a bigger tragedy than the one he orchestrated ten years ago, he ordered Pica to throw the intruders present out of the palace. He then initiated his “Birdcage” plan, spreading his strings around the island forming a “cage” and blocking anyone from leaving. He then used his “Parasite” ability to take control of numerous people in the country, making them rampage throughout the island, this act made the citizens realize that Doflamingo framed Doldo all those years ago.

After Pica moved the royal palace away from Luffy’s group to the top of the Flower Field, Doflamingo then made a public announcement to the country, claiming that now that the truth has been revealed, he is initiating a “game”. Everyone is trapped inside his cage until one of two things happens: if someone manages to get to the palace and kill him, or they manage to kill a list of people he prepares to name off. Doflamingo then explained his hit list and each head is worth a certain number of stars with each star worth 100 million: Rebecca, Robin, Kin’emon, Viola, and Franky were each worth one star; Kyros and Zoro were each worth two stars; Sabo, Luffy, Law, and Riku Doldo III were each worth three stars; and Usopp, who had angered Doflamingo the most, was worth five stars. During a gathering with some of his officers and lower-rank subordinates at the top of the palace, Doflamingo pardoned Trebol and Diamante for their failures. He then destroyed the keys to the SMILE factory to ensure the Straw Hats would not be able to break in.

He also assured his men that Issho would not attack the Donquixote Pirates, and he would eliminate the admiral when the time comes. When one of the subordinates laughed at Pica’s high-pitch voice, Doflamingo and the other elite officers glared at him angrily. After the subordinate was shot by Baby 5 and thrown out of the palace, Doflamingo firmly declared to his lower-rank troops that his officers are his precious “family” and will not forgive anyone who laughs at them. When Luffy, Law, and Ucy reached a dead end with a pool of water in a tunnel located on the first level of the new King’s Plateau, a string clone of Doflamingo appeared behind them. The clone then attacked Ucy with bullet thread, knocking him unconscious.

As Luffy and Law fell into the water and became powerless, Doflamingo expressed his disappointment in Law for choosing Luffy as an ally. Before he could kill them, Abdullah and Jeet arrived and struck the clone in the back. At the palace, the real Doflamingo reminisced about the day he first met Law and commented that Law used to be like him. Bellamy later arrived and questioned Doflamingo about his betrayal. Doflamingo simply replied that their goals had been different from the very beginning and anything was fine by him as long as he can destroy the world.

He then severely injured Bellamy. Later, when Luffy and Law infiltrated the palace, Doflamingo prepared for a confrontation as they stood in front of him. Doflamingo expressed his disappointment over how Luffy and Law had done such detrimental actions to his works, as well as expressing disappointment over Bellamy’s failure. Luffy attacked Doflamingo with his foot, but the latter used Bellamy as a shield. He then attacked Law with a string clone and took control of Bellamy to attack Luffy.

However, Luffy aimed an attack at Law. Doflamingo was at first confused, but he realized too late what was going on when Law used Room to switch their places, resulting in him getting hit in the midsection by Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk. As he recovered from the attack, Doflamingo defended Trebol from Law’s attack and used a move called Fulbright to incapacitate Law. After knocking down Law, Doflamingo proceeded to attack Luffy with a Haki-imbued kick. He then used his powers to bind Luffy’s arms and then have Bellamy slash him.

Doflamingo then told them about how he hates being looked down upon and revealed to everyone his former status as a Celestial Dragon. He went on, explaining to them about his past and how he would destroy everything in the world that the Celestial Dragons control, Much to Luffy, Law and Bellamy’s shock and horror. He then proceeded to send his string clone and Bellamy after Luffy, while he confronted Law. When Law asked him why he was able to summon CP0 despite being exiled from the World Nobles, Doflamingo revealed that he had knowledge of a secret National Treasure. Since the World Nobles could not kill him, they became cooperative.

Doflamingo then explained that Law’s Ope Ope no Mi had the power to give someone eternal youth at the cost of the user’s life. As he and Law clashed, Doflamingo revealed that he never wanted Law to have the fruit in the first place and reminded Law that he had taught him multiple forms of combat. He then expressed his anger as Law declared that he would use the fruit’s power to end him and his crew. As the battle intensified, Law revealed that he has the letter “D” in his name, much to Doflamingo’s shock. Doflamingo continued with his attack while dismissing the saying of “D” being God’s natural enemy as superstition.

Law eventually found an opening and injured Doflamingo with Injection Shot. Law continued to send a barrage of attacks at Doflamingo and attempted to use “Mes” on him. However, Doflamingo grabbed Law’s arm and stopped him, using the opportunity to taunt Law. Doflamingo then used his string powers to create a saw on his leg and used it to sever Law’s right arm. As Law lay on the ground in pain, Doflamingo prepared to kill Law, saying that a lead bullet is the most fitting end for him.

Before Doflamingo could fire though, Luffy distracted Doflamingo by destroying the string clone by punching it though the ceiling onto the level where Doflamingo and Law are. With Law unable to stand, Doflamingo once again told Law to surrender, saying that he had no chance of victory. He then held Law at gunpoint and commented that he will die in vain. Doflamingo offered Law one last chance to use the Ope Ope no Mi to grant him eternal life in exchange for granting Law any wish. Law responded by mockingly telling Doflamingo to bring Corazon back and go lick the asses of every person in the country.

While giving Doflamingo the middle finger, Law commented that the Straw Hat Pirates are a group that can make miracles happen and they would not be defeated. Angered, Doflamingo pulled the trigger on his pistol. Doflamingo noticed the word “Corazon” on Law’s back and repeatedly shot Law while expressing annoyance that Law did not occupy the Heart Seat. After Luffy defeated Bellamy and yelled out Doflamingo’s name in anguish, Doflamingo laughed, saying that Luffy is in for a shock once he sees Law’s dead body. Luffy returned to the palace rooftop and resumed his battle with Doflamingo.

As they clashed, Luffy stumbled upon Law’s unconscious body. When Luffy tried to speak to Law, Doflamingo stated that Law is dead. However, Luffy refused to believe him. As the Straw Hat captain screamed in rage, Doflamingo prepared to end his game as his Birdcage started to shrink. Doflamingo informed Luffy that the Birdcage would destroy everything in Dressrosa in about one hour.

Luffy charged at Doflamingo, but to Doflamingo’s surprise, Law suddenly appeared in front of him. Law attacked Doflamingo with Gamma Knife, damaging his internal organs. Doflamingo then grabbed onto Law’s face but was quickly kicked away by Luffy’s Jet Stamp. Law then placed a Room around himself and Doflamingo. As Doflamingo lay injured on the floor, Law condemned him for murdering Corazon.

When Doflamingo insulted his brother, Law attacked with Counter Shock. After Law collapsed from exhaustion, Doflamingo stood back up, revealing that he can use his string powers to fix his internal injuries. He then attempted to stomp on Law’s head, but Luffy quickly intervened. Doflamingo attempted to finish off Law again, but Luffy countered him again using Supreme King Haki. Doflamingo then battled Luffy, and though he managed to counter Luffy’s early strikes, Luffy exploited an opening and repeatedly punched Doflamingo before attempting to finish him off with Gomu Gomu no Eagle Bazooka.

However, Doflamingo evaded Luffy’s final attack and kicked him using Athlete, sending Luffy into Trebol’s trap. Trebol gave Doflamingo the chance to finish Law off, but decided to go after Law himself after the Warlord insulted him. Trebol told Law about how he and the other Donquixote executives had cultivated Doflamingo to become a king, but Law questioned Doflamingo’s loyalty to him and the other executives. This caused Trebol to go into a rage and attack Law, even though Doflamingo noticed that Law activated a Room and warned Trebol not to attack. However, Trebol ignored Doflamingo, resulting in his defeat.

Doflamingo was then caught in Trebol’s explosion. Doflamingo managed to evade the explosion and saw Luffy throwing Law down to Nico Robin. Not willing to let Law get away, he tried shooting at Robin’s group on the Flower Field using Tamaito, but was immediately hit afterwards by Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Hawk Whip. He then watched as Cavendish arrived and deflected his Tamaito. Even though Cavendish desired to fight Doflamingo, he and the others left on Luffy’s request.

Doflamingo then resumed his battle with Luffy, with both of them commenting on each other’s injuries. Luffy hit Doflamingo using two Armament Haki-imbued fists, sending Doflamingo flying off the roof. Doflamingo laughed them off, saying that Luffy’s punches felt like no more than tickles. He then used Overheat to send Luffy flying off the roof, remembering the times he saw and heard of Luffy. Doflamingo kicked Luffy into the palace wall, causing a large chunk of it to fall apart.

The two then clashed again, with Luffy using Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum. However, Doflamingo easily evaded this attack and exploited an opening it left to kick Luffy into the ground. He then taunted Luffy about the shrinking Birdcage, saying people would die soon all because the Straw Hats set foot on Dressrosa. Luffy became enraged at Doflamingo for hurting his friends, activating Gear 4. Upon seeing Luffy activate it, Doflamingo laughed at the absurdity of the form, thinking Luffy just simply made himself bigger and bouncier in a desperate attempt to intimidate him.

However, Luffy gave him a showcase of his new power by retracting his fist into his arm and hitting Doflamingo with it like a cannon. Doflamingo tried to block, but the impact sent him flying from the palace into the center district of the town much to the astonishment of the citizens. Doflamingo got to his feet and scared them off, surprised at how far he was sent flying. He then noticed Luffy using his new form to fly towards him. Once in view, Luffy suddenly disappeared and reappeared on his left side.

Luffy then hit Doflamingo with a drop kick attack that sent him flying through several buildings. Finally getting fed up, Doflamingo managed to avoid one of Luffy’s punches and aimed a kick to Luffy’s stomach. However, to his surprise, he found that even though Luffy is using Armament Haki, his body is still rubbery and blunt attacks just bounce right off him. Luffy then knocked Doflamingo back a good distance and sent another punch after him. Doflamingo tried to evade the attack, but the attack followed him and succeeded in punching him in the face.

Doflamingo was sent crashing into the ground again and tried to comprehend Luffy’s new form. Luffy then flew toward Doflamingo, intent on ending their battle. Doflamingo mocking asked Luffy how much time he had left in that form as he blocked Luffy’s attack by summoning a wave of strings from the ground. Doflamingo then revealed to an astonished Luffy the increased potential of Awakened Devil Fruits as he turned the surrounding buildings into string. Twenty minutes later, Doflamingo continued hurling string at Luffy as he listened to Riku’s speech.

Doflamingo then stated that it was time for everyone to die and turned more buildings into string, aiming all of them at Luffy. However, Luffy evaded the string and flew toward Doflamingo, hitting the Warlord with Gomu Gomu no Leo Bazooka. Doflamingo tried to counter, but was sent flying into the palace mountain. Luffy’s attack failed to completely incapacitate Doflamingo and his Birdcage remained active. He got back up and soon found himself confronted by the gladiators from the colosseum.

While pursuing Luffy, Doflamingo struck down anyone standing in his way. To make Luffy come to him, Doflamingo accelerated the shrinking of the Birdcage. After easily defeating the gladiators who tried to attack him, Doflamingo found himself confronted by Viola with Rebecca watching nearby. Doflamingo gravely injured Viola, saying that he does not tolerate traitors. While immobilizing Viola, he took control of Rebecca, preparing her to strike down her defenseless aunt.

At that moment, Gatz made his broadcast, revealing to everyone on Dressrosa that Luffy would bring down Doflamingo once and for all in ten seconds. Gatz taunted Doflamingo, causing the Warlord to become enraged and stab him with a sheet of string. When Doflamingo was about to kill Viola through Rebecca, Law switched Viola’s position with Luffy, who prepared to fight Doflamingo once more. Doflamingo attacked both Luffy and Rebecca with his strings, but Law saved Rebecca, so he turned his attention solely to Luffy. Doflamingo then turned an entire portion of the town into string to attack Luffy with a thousand “Flap Thread” string arrows.

Doflamingo immobilized Luffy and taunted him by saying that all the slaughter could have been avoided had the people of Dressrosa just accepted their manipulation. This enraged Luffy to the point where he instantly reactivated Gear 4 and broke the strings holding him, taking the remainder of the fight into the skies above. After once again saying Luffy stood no chance against him due to his “commoner’s blood”, Doflamingo attempted to trap him in his Spider’s Web. As Luffy enlarged his right arm and readied his final attack, Doflamingo unleashed 16 God Threads in a last-ditch effort to kill Luffy. Despite this, Luffy’s King Kong Gun broke through Doflamingo’s attack and slammed Doflamingo into the ground.

The force was so powerful that it upturned an entire section of the city in the impact and shattered his trademark sunglasses. Doflamingo fell into the underground trade port as a result of the attack and finally lost consciousness, making the Birdcage crumble away. His broken sunglasses clattered to the ground beside him, landing upside down. His unconscious body was later found by the Marines and they arrested him while chaining his body in Seastone shackles, formally stripping him of the titles Warlord of the Sea and King of Dressrosa, while Fujitora publicly apologized to Dressrosa and the neighboring countries for the World Government’s mistake in letting such a dangerous pirate hold this title, bowing in apology with all the Marines present in the ruined kingdom. Doflamingo was later locked in a cell aboard a Marine ship.

As Tsuru watched over him, Doflamingo expressed his frustration over Fujitora’s decision to not work with him in taking down Luffy and Law, because he considered himself the one who reigned in all the “monsters” in the world, yet continued to find mirth even in defeat, taunting the Marines with a smile and laughter at the thought of what would happen now that he has been removed from the Seven Warlords. After Tsuru reminded him of the reality that he lost, Doflamingo commented on the era where Whitebeard ruled in front of the throne of the Pirate King instead of claiming it out of respect for Gol D. Roger, noting 25 years had elapsed since the Pirate King’s voyage across the Grand Line. He further explained that there are many individuals who would attempt to be rulers of the seas in their own right and with himself removed from power and no longer feeding the monsters, there was no one left to hold back a battle for supremacy and the war for the title of Pirate King will one day soon begin. He also told Tsuru that the World Nobles will be removed from power as well. Aware that the ship was headed for Impel Down, he asked for a newspaper every day to prevent himself from getting bored. Afterwards, Kaidou’s right-hand man, Jack, pursued Doflamingo’s escort of four Marine warships and attempted to take Doflamingo back by force. However, the rescue attempt failed; while Jack was presumed dead, he escaped with heavy wounds. Doflamingo was successfully taken to Impel Down and incarcerated in Level 6. He requested newspapers while imprisoned, and although Tsuru did not oblige his requests, he was still somehow able to get his hands on newspapers during his incarceration through other means.

Whole Cake Island Saga

Levely Arc

While locked in his cell, Doflamingo asked Magellan if he was protecting him and wondered if assassins were coming to silence him to ensure that Mary Geoise’s secret treasure would remain concealed. He then wondered if he should reveal it out of sheer boredom, while stating power never lasts as long as you want anyway.

Wano Country Arc

After the Levely, Doflamingo managed to obtain a newspaper and was delighted to find out the massive events going on in the world.

Egghead Arc

During Vegapunk’s world-wide message, that detailed the world would sink into the sea, Doflamingo laughed in his cell finding the revelation amusing and questioned Magellan on what he would do if the sea water flooded into Impel Down. Magellan answered that the one-meter rise was already bad enough for the prison, Doflamingo suggested that since most cities would flood with a 5-meter increase, that they could “move to much higher ground”.

Translation And Dub Issues

His family name, Donquixote, is originally one word. In the English translations, it has been separated into two, Don Quixote, possibly due to the translators believing it was inspired by the titular character of a novel. The Yaksha part of his epithet, Heavenly Yaksha, refers to demons of dual personalities who guard natural treasures hidden deep under the earth and roots, from Buddhist and Hindu folklore. The English manga translated it into “Heavenly Demon”, since “Yasha” in Japanese also means “demon”.

Anime And Manga Differences

Jaya Arc

In the manga, Doflamingo’s actions during the Warlord meeting after Crocodile’s title was revoked were noticed by Tsuru. In the anime, his actions were noticed instead by Mozambia.

Marineford Arc

At the moment when Sengoku revealed the relationship between Dragon and Luffy in the manga, Doflamingo stated that was the reason why Ivankov was with Luffy. In the anime, he did not say anything and was only briefly seen smiling.

Colorization

In the manga and other related merchandise, Doflamingo has a different color scheme than the one that was presented initially in the anime. However, the anime later changed the majority of Doflamingo’s…

In the manga and other related merchandise, Doflamingo has a different color scheme than the one that was presented initially in the anime. However, the anime later changed the majority of Doflamingo’s color scheme to match that presented in the manga. Doflamingo’s signature pistol was different in color schemes as well. The anime portrays the pistol as in the present, but in the flashback, the pistol that Doflamingo received from Trebol and later used to kill his father was merely an ordinary pistol. The manga shows it as the ornate pistol when Trebol gave it to him.

Supreme King Haki

In the manga, Doflamingo awakening his Supreme King Haki during his childhood was only mentioned. In the anime, Doflamingo was shown using Supreme King Haki on the mob who hanged him and his family over the wall of fire right after he swore to kill them.

Early Concepts

In One Piece Green: Secret Pieces, an early concept of Doflamingo was revealed, showing that he was originally a rapper, and that he was supposed to be a little younger than his current setting. According to Eiichiro Oda in SBS Volume 98, Doflamingo was originally supposed to be fought in the Wano Country Arc as an ally or possibly even a subordinate of Kaidou, with Doflamingo’s alias of “Joker” being a remnant of this concept (as, thematically, he would have fit alongside the Beasts Pirates’ All-Stars: King, Queen and Jack).

  • Doflamingo is the primary antagonist of One Piece Premier Show 2010 when he advises Disco on a plan to kidnap and sell Boa Hancock to the World Nobles. He comes to Disco’s aid at the end of the show to fight the Straw Hat Pirates. Doflamingo advises Lambor Bukini in One Piece Premier Show 2013 after funding the slave trader’s factory and fake events. He comes to Bukini’s aid before being forces to retreat by Kuzan. A clone of Doflamingo is created by Pokke in One Piece Premier Show 2016 to fight the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Doflamingo appears in One Piece 4D, Straw Hat Pirates vs. Marines vs. Seven Warlords Holographic Battle Theater, and the first One Piece Water Spectacle show as an antagonist.
  • Doflamingo appears in the Zoro and Marineford versions of the Hungry Days commercials.
  • Masakazu Mimura, one of the guests on the first episode of One Piece Variety: I Will be the Pirate King TV, dresses up as Doflamingo for the show.
Crossovers
  • Doflamingo appears as a crossover event-exclusive character in the mobile game Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle.

Trivia

  • Doflamingo’s flag was the first “smilie” style Jolly Roger to be seen in the series. Doflamingo also stated that slavery is “out”, but smilies are “in”. With the introduction of SAD and his illicit underground network trafficking in man-made Zoans, “SMILE”, the meaning behind his words and symbol become much clearer.
  • Doflamingo’s surname is a reference to Don Quixote, the main character of the famous Spanish novel “El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha”, while his given name, Flamingo, is a bird whose plumage resembles Doflamingo’s flamboyant coat and likely comprises it.
  • In the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th fan polls of most popular characters, Doflamingo was ranked 61st, 46th, 17th, 17th again, and 20th, respectively, making him the 3rd most popular of the original Seven Warlords of the Sea, and 4th most popular overall. This also ranks him as the second most popular major antagonist of the series.
  • Doflamingo is the second antagonist (the first being Caesar Clown) to have his own original soundtrack, the theme is called “Donquixote Doflamingo” and is part of the One Piece New World Soundtrack.
  • Doflamingo’s former bounty before joining the Seven Warlords is the highest known bounty that was revealed in the first half of the series.
  • Doflamingo shares some things with the other Warlords:
    • He and Boa Hancock are the only known members who can use Supreme King Haki.
    • He and Trafalgar D. Water Law are the only known members to have awakened their Devil Fruits.
      • He is also the very first Paramecia-type Devil Fruit user who revealed that he had his Devil Fruit power awakened.
  • Doflamingo possesses notable parallels to Crocodile, with both of them being Warlords who worked to take over a country (with Doflamingo succeeding), resulting in them becoming hated enemies of that country’s royal family, who would work alongside the Straw Hat Pirates to topple them. Both Warlords strategized to conquer their kingdoms by implicating the king in crimes to turn public opinion against them. Both of them would also attempt to commit genocide on the country’s people. The similarities in their actions were directly noted by Fujitora and Smoker, and resulted in Fujitora working to avoid what happened in the aftermath of Crocodile’s defeat by making it clear that the Straw Hats, not the Marines, had stopped Doflamingo, and using both incidents to support his campaign to abolish the Seven Warlords.
    • This makes Doflamingo the only Warlord defeated by Luffy to have the details of his defeat fully revealed to the world, as both Crocodile’s and Gecko Moria’s defeats were covered up by the World Government.
  • Doflamingo’s sunglasses being broken by Luffy paralleled Kuro’s glasses breaking at the end of his fight with Luffy; both characters were closely associated with their glasses.
    • Doflamingo’s red eye Furthermore, Doflamingo has always hidden his eyes behind some form of frames even in flashbacks to his youth. His eyes have been scarcely seen; his right eye has been glimpsed twice—once after waking up from a nightmare and again after his glasses were broken. His left eye, however, has never been seen uncovered.
  • Doflamingo’s past is somewhat parallel to Sabo’s. Doflamingo had the mindset of a typical World Noble, but was born to compassionate parents who chose to forfeit their statuses, forcing him to face many hardships and become a pirate to survive. Meanwhile Sabo was born to cruel noble parents, but was kindhearted and wanted to be free of such a lifestyle, so he escaped out to sea to become a pirate of his own choice.
    • Also, both joined an organization which were on opposite sides concerning the World Government (Doflamingo was a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, who formerly supported the government, and Sabo was with the Revolutionary Army, which opposed it).
    • In addition, each of them had brother who they disagreed with (Doflamingo had his biological brother, Rosinante, who became a Marine and tried to stop Doflamingo, only to be killed by him, and Sabo had his adopted brother, Sterry, who was like any noble and became king of Goa).
  • Doflamingo’s method of governing Dressrosa is comparable to a microcosm of the World under the World Noble’s rule. He enslaves the Tontatta Tribe to do hard work for him, uses the money he earned from slavery and weapons manufacturing to make his own country prosperous, and gravely punishes those who dare defy his rule. He is also briefly assisted by an Admiral (akin to how Celestial Dragons call them to kill offenders against them) and his final stunt against the people of Dressrosa draws similarities to the Native Hunting Competitions the World Government holds once every three years. Given his former Celestial Dragon lineage, this is most likely intentional on his part.
  • Doflamingo references his inspirational namesake to various degrees, as do many other characters around him and One Piece as a whole. Don Quixote De La Mancha was a noble committed to a traditional knight errant in the post-chivalry era, resulting in arguably tragic/comedic consequences at the expense of those around him. Around the French Revolution the text was popularly interpreted as a morality tale of individuals being correct over society being wrong.
    • Doflamingo experiences both of this, experiencing torture despite being only a child due to societal bias from his family status as a World Noble. Whilst in adulthood ironically embodying the same society’s cruelty against King Riku Doldo and his family.
    • Further irony is Doflamingo’s dismissal of Luffy (like other antagonists) as what is known as ‘Quixotism’ in reality, defined as an idealistic pursuit of goals with little regard for practicality and implied failure.
    • Rocinante’s and Sancho Panza’s roles as the followers who usually face consequences for their leader’s adventures are mirrored by both the Donquixote Pirates and the Straw Hat Pirates.
    • Rosinante, named after Don Quixote’s old and overworked horse suffer due to the deeds of Doflamingo. Whereas the horse was usually comically involved and arguably against Don Quixote, Rosinante comically opposed him in secret, only to meet tragedy once exposed.
    • Gan Fall, whilst donning the armor of the Sky Knight (itself based on Don Quixote’s armor) explained a similar sentiment to the Revolutionary interpretation of Don Quixote when explaining pirates to Conis and Pagaya.
    • Doflamingo’s amoral nature is also a reflection of this interpretation dismissing much of the Marines sentiments and role in maintaining peace, seen during the Summit War of Marineford and after his arrest, accurately predicting the chaos his removal from the underworld would cause.
    • Don Quixote de la Mancha would be considered a literary milestone in developing the ‘picaresque’ genre, which is based on low-class rogues as main characters with some comedic and satirical tones.
Sbsbased Trivia
  • A fan asked Oda why Viola and Doflamingo called each other “Violet” and “Doffy” in chapter 788, and Oda anwsered that there is a deep secret behind this, but because it is a pretty adult part of the story, he could not tell the reader more.
  • The appearance of Doflamingo’s sunglasses is based on the eyes of Kamen Rider Super-1.
  • Doflamingo’s alias, Joker, fits with the card-themed aliases of his own crew as well as the Beasts Pirates whom he was allied with. His alias particularly aligns with the names of the Beasts Pirates’ All-Stars, as they are all based on playing card ranks. Doflamingo was given this alias because he was initially intended to be a strong ally of Kaidou who would be battled during the Wano Country Arc.
  • Doflamingo’s favorite food is lobster. His least favorite food is barbecue due to the trauma he went through as a child.
