Due to her actions and role, she is a major antagonist in the Elbaph Arc.

Appearance

Gunko is a young-looking woman of average height. She has light short hair and appears to have heterochromia, with a dark right eye, and a light left one. The lower half of her face and her knees are wrapped in bandages. She wears a dark newsboy cap with goggles, a double-breasted jacket with extremely long sleeves, and what appears to be a dark panty underneath it, a dark cape, and dark boots with cylindrical structures on them. Upon being possessed by Imu, Gunko’s eyes changed to their distinctive double-layered irises. In addition, her hair appeared to have grown in length, though whether this was the result of the possession or due to hair being undone from her cap or jacket is unknown. Her appearance was described by nearby children as “scary”.

Personality

Befitting her position as a God’s Knight, Gunko is exceptionally arrogant, ruthless and mission oriented who desires to carry out any assignment promptly. Her arrogance is perhaps best shown when beating Loki, what appears to be a mixture of frustration and confusion at Loki’s staunch refusal to join the God’s Knights, as the status associated is something that many dream of. However, Gunko’s arrogance is not so much that she cannot acknowledge the chain of command and adopts a more servile, respectful tone towards Shamrock, her superior. She has also confessed to fearing the legendary Sun God Nika for unknown reasons. Though driven in her desire to complete her mission, Gunko is also prone to violent bursts of anger, especially if not taken seriously; she attacked a giant simply for brushing her question aside, and proposed killing Loki at the mere notion that he was acting insolent toward herself and her partner.

Like the World Nobles, she has a low view of regular people, as she was unconcerned about the prospect of children dying, for the simple reason that spares existed. This unconcerned nature has been shown to border sadism, as she was completely undeterred at simply watching the…

Like the World Nobles, she has a low view of regular people, as she was unconcerned about the prospect of children dying, for the simple reason that spares existed. This unconcerned nature has been shown to border sadism, as she was completely undeterred at simply watching the children burn to death. For all of Gunko’s seriousness, there is a side of her that is prudish as she became embarrassed to the point of needing to turn away while blushing when Saint Shepherd Sommers was summoned in only his undergarments. Additionally, Gunko is appreciative of fine dining, and grew excited after eating delicious food created from dreams. Gunko is aware of Luffy’s status as an Emperor of the Sea and does recognize him as a serious threat, but sometimes finds herself in a short-tempered rampage when her demands are not fulfilled. Gunko appears to harbor some form of interest in Brook, due to a shared past between the two. Fittingly, one of her favorite songs is Brook’s “New World”, which she listens to after eating, as a sort of ritual. When first coming into direct contact with him, Gunko wished to enslave Brook into making more music for her, beating him up when he refused, but also showing visible discomfort when doing so, suggesting a deeper connection. Sure enough, upon regaining memories between a much younger version of herself and Brook, at least 50 years prior, Gunko immediately abandoned her mission, instead trying to locate him. Interestingly, said memories came about as a result of hearing nearby Colon calling out for his father. This show that, despite seemingly having a typical Celestial Dragon’s haughtiness, she is also capable of having a friendly relationship with so-called commoners, which is something scorned by the World Nobles’ general population.

Relationships

Allies

Figarland Shamrock

Figarland Shamrock is her direct superior and as such, obediently follows his commands without hesitation. She will also get offended and angry on his behalf, should someone disrespect him and resort to violence.

Gods Knights

From her interaction with Rimoshifu Killingham and Shepherd Sommers, Gunko seems to be cooperative with the other God’s Knights. They share great teamwork and are able to use their abilities to their fullest extent, to achieve their goals with maximum proficiency. Outside of their missions, Gunko seems less inclined to interact with the other God’s Knights. While they spend time together and have a meal together, Gunko generally shoots down attempts at small talk and excludes herself from conversations.

Other

Brook

Gunko has a mysterious connection to Brook. She was a big fan of his music and, upon meeting him, overpowered and bound him. She wanted to keep Brook for herself and force him to make music for her, for as long as they live. When Brook rejected her, Gunko reacted with rage and violently kicked Brook, something which apparently caused her emotional pain. When Brook rejected her, Gunko reacted with rage and violently kicked Brook, something which apparently caused her emotional pain. Gunko seemingly remembered Brook from his previous life before he became a skeleton but did not recognize him right away. During her childhood, Brook shared his dream of becoming a pirate with her. Brook also seemed to have recognized Gunko after pondering for a while. Upon remembering him, she reacted emotionally and tried to run towards him before Imu possessed her.

Abilities And Powers

Being a World Noble of the Manmayer family, Gunko is above the law of the lower world and is permitted to do anything she pleases, so long as it does not go against the laws of the Celestial Dragons. She has tremendous political influence and can summon a Marine Admiral to handle anyone she feels is trying to bring harm to her. However, being a God’s Knight, she possesses more than sufficient combat prowess to defend herself without the needs of an Admiral. As a member of the God’s Knight, Gunko is an accomplished combatant, capable of subduing multiple members of the Straw Hat Pirates by herself. As with her fellow God’s Knights members, she has jurisdiction over standard World Nobles and acts as a police force and elite guard amongst them. Upon arriving in Elbaph, Gunko lived up her organization’s high standards by engaging in combat with two giants, mutilating Loki’s animals, and beating the incapacitated prince to a pulp and easily crushes four of the Straw Hats right after (of which included the highly powerful Jinbe) , showing her might in raw combat. Gunko is also extremely pragmatic in combat and is not above exploiting…

Gunko is also extremely pragmatic in combat and is not above exploiting personal connections in order to gain the upper hand against stronger opponents. It was thanks to her cunning and lack of care for people’s lives that she was able to defeat even the legendary pirate Scopper Gaban, threatening his son’s life to force a surrender.

Devil Fruit

Gunko ate the Aro Aro no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit which grants her the ability to create and control bandage-like strips with ends shaped like arrowheads. The arrow strips can be detached, levitated, and controlled from afar. The arrows have various offensive uses; in addition to the arrowheads themselves being good for stabbing, the arrow strips can be used to bind an opponent’s limbs or choke them around their neck. The arrows can also be coiled into the shape of constructs, such as Gunko giving herself giant gauntlets and boots around her limbs, giving a significant boost to her striking power. Gunko also can stand on her arrows in mid-air. Since Gunko can assemble any shape with the arrows, she can stand on a bird made of arrows and use it to fly around. The arrows can even be used to affect movement and its properties, allowing Gunko to augment her attacks; she can use the arrows to form a pathway for her next attack (or multiple arrows for her next several attacks) to follow, though she can change course if she chooses. This designated path increases the velocity and momentum of the attack, considerably enhancing the force of each strike. Though, it does allow her opponent to see exactly what she is going to do next. She can also apply this property of her arrows defensively to redirect her opponent’s attacks away from herself and back at them or their allies. Gunko is adept at combining her Devil Fruit powers with hand-to-hand combat, allowing her to weave through attacks and deliver powerful blows at close quarters.

Abyss

Gunko bears a mark that grants her the ability to use magic circles known as Abysses as a means of transport, having been transported to Elbaph by one alongside Shamrock. She can also summon other marked individuals at will by aiming her hand at the ground and calling them to her location through the Abyss, regardless of their own willingness or what they are doing at the time.

Immortality

Through unknown means, Gunko is effectively immortal as she can heal instantaneously from injuries. Gunko recovered instantly from having her entire upper body blown off by explosives without reacting. She also seems to have her aging decelerated, if not halted, as around fifty years ago, she was a mere child, but remained as a young-looking woman to this day, to the point that Brook was able to recognize her, similar to Jaygarcia Saturn remaining the same for two hundred years.

Haki

Gunko possesses powerful Haki. Her arrival on Elbaph was accompanied by a massive burst of Haki which resembled black lightning. Her Haki was sensed by Scopper Gaban and described as being very abnormal.

History

Past

As a young child, Gunko was acquainted with Brook and he shared his dream to become a pirate with her.

Final Saga

Elbaph Arc

During the banquet to celebrate the Straw Hat Pirates on Elbaph, Gunko and Figarland Shamrock touched down in Aurust Castle by means of a Magic Circle. When the pair asked a couple of giant guards about Loki’s whereabouts, the giants did not take them seriously, so Gunko tortured one for the information. Gunko and Shamrock traveled down to the Underworld and met with Loki. They offered him a position in the God’s Knights; however, he rejected their offer. Annoyed by Loki’s personality, Gunko attacked one of his pets, and Shamrock suggested using it as a bargaining chip.

In the end, however, Loki refused once more. Gunko eventually elected for a more direct means of coercion and began to torture Loki by beating him using her devil fruit ability. Even after a sustained assault on the giant prince, he still refused to let up, leading to Gunko knocking him unconscious. This in turn led to Shamrock calling her off and expressing his annoyance with the situation they had been forced into. Shamrock then ordered Gunko…

Shamrock then ordered Gunko to contact Mary Geoise, with the intent of bringing the giants of Elbaph under the control of the World Government.

Before the two could leave, Loki managed to recompose himself and demanded to know why Shamrock bore a close resemblance to his previous adversary, Shanks. Gunko was annoyed by the question, and attempted to tell Loki off. However, through some prodding, Loki was able to get Shamrock to explain that he was in fact Shanks’ twin brother, leading to Loki issuing a threat toward the family as a whole. Gunko was again annoyed by the threat, and Shamrock agreed, leading to him equipping his sword and summoning Cerberus from it. At the same time, Gunko formed a bird-like entity using her arrows and informed Shamrock that they had other places to be at the moment.

While Loki was attacked by Shamrock’s sword, the pair flew off and formulated plans to take the giant children of Elbaph hostage, and to summon assistance from Mary Geoise. Upon landing back up in Elbaph’s Sun World, Gunko used her abilities to create an Abyss, before summoning Rimoshifu Killingham and Shepherd Sommers. After the pair were briefed on the situation, Killingham mentioned that they would have to manually extract the children, as none of them bore the mark to use the Abyss although he fell asleep halfway through his sentence, leading to Gunko growing annoyed at him. In the end, however, Shamrock suggested that the trio of God’s Knights could use their powers to make a “game” out of the situation. The Knights quickly got to work, with Killingham helping to force several children into a powerful slumber; once that happened, Gunko used an arrow to make the children move toward their ship.

As their work had been essentially automated from that point forward, the God’s Knights took a break to have a meal. While Sommers philosophized about the raw emotion that comes from watching loved ones die, Gunko refused to take part in his droning, causing him to fall out of his seat in shock. At the same time, Killingham took on a more serious approach to the conversation, asking where Gunko had directed the children to go. Gunko revealed that she had taken the most simplistic route: down the central branch, and to the coastline of the village, where they would then be extracted. While Sommers was disappointed at the apparent ease of their “game”, Gunko informed him that she had seen the Straw Hat Pirates’ ship docked at the coastline, meaning that the Emperor Monkey D.

Luffy was on Elbaph, and that they should expect trouble. To add further on unexpected situations, one of the God’s Knights noticed the children walking straight into a large fire (that Loki had started earlier), but Gunko reminded them that they could simply send more if the children were to be killed. After eating, Gunko began listening to Brook’s song “New World”. Sommers jokingly called it her ritual, only for her to deny it, simply stating that she enjoyed doing it. Afterward, she and Sommers watched from above as the giant children finally began to make their way through the flames Loki had started.

When asked for her thoughts, Gunko gave a grim description of the children’s apparent fate, earning her praise from Sommers for her “emotional” thoughts. However, moments before that fate could come to pass, Jinbe used Umigumo Ipponzeoi to throw a large amount of sea cloud water onto the branch, extinguishing the fires just in time. Due to their unexpected appearance, Gunko made her way onto the Straw Hat’s Svarr to confront them. While there, she took notice of the fact that Colon was not amongst the other children. As Gunko stood on her perch, she was immediately recognized as one of the human intruders on Elbaph.

Upon actually being called a human, she angrily claimed to be a “god”, confusing the Straw Hats. When questioned on her motives for the kidnapping, she informed the Straw Hats that any method other than their current one would be too difficult, and that the children would be held as hostage in Mary Geoise. The Straw Hats immediately became hostile upon discovery of Gunko’s status as a God’s Knight, prompting a fight. Gunko sent an arrow after Usopp while Nami used Zeus to attack her, however she simply redirected him back at Nami. Fortunately for Nami, Brook stepped into place to take the attack, and as a result of the distraction, Usopp was able to use Midori Boshi: Dokuro Bakuhatsu So, resulting in Gunko’s upper body being blown apart.

However, her regenerative ability kicked in, allowing her to send out another arrow toward Usopp. At the same time, she informed the Straw Hats that a “great war” was quickly approaching, and that having the giants under the thumb of the World Government would essentially ensure a victory. As Colon tried to attack her, she hoisted him into the air using an arrow. Immediately after, Brook and Jinbe tried attacks of their own, but Gunko simply redirected both, causing friendly fire between the two. She then dealt a swift kick to Nami, and kneed Usopp in the face, knocking all of the Straw Hats overboard while keeping Colon suspended in the air.

Afterward, Gunko dropped Colon off with the rest of the hostages, before tying up the Straw Hats and bringing them to Sommers’ location. After arriving, she threatened Brook, before informing him that he was now her slave, and that he would spend the rest of his life making music for her. However, Brook denied her claim, on the grounds that his loyalty lied solely with his captain, Luffy. As a result, Gunko began to furiously attack Brook, kicking him into the ground whilst Sommers began his broadcast. During the process, she appeared to be hurt at being rejected by her idol, clutching her chest in pain.

After finishing taking out her rage on Brook, she left him wrapped up like a mummy, before quickly making her way to the giant children. On Sommers’ order, Gunko redirected one of the children to walk onto an arrow hanging above a massive drop off the branch. In order to instill further pressure during the already nerve-wracking countdown, Gunko forced the girl to speak over the announcement. The additional pressure ended up succeeding, as Jarul tearfully ordered the destruction of Elbaph’s knowledge institutions. With their work done, Gunko prepared the giant children to move again.

However, before she could leave, Scopper Gaban suddenly appeared, having arrived to rescue the children. To Gunko’s luck, Colon revealed himself as Gaban’s son, allowing her leverage, which she quickly took advantage of. She held a spear to Colon’s neck, threatening his life if Gaban were to try anything. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Gaban held up his hands in surrender. Gunko was disgusted by his apparent weakness, and promptly impaled him with a few arrows, before knocking him off of the branch. As Colon cried out for his father, Gunko suddenly felt strange memories resurface, including calling out for her father, and walking alongside Brook before he became a pirate. Seemingly regaining her own mind, she cried out to Brook. Before she could return to Brook, Gunko’s body was abruptly overtaken by Imu, who declared their intention to “assist” the God’s Knights. Imu put their full complement of abilities to use from Gunko’s body, incapacitating many giants with Supreme King Haki and using the Abyss to transform Dorry, Brogy, and several other giants into demons that gleefully obeyed Imu’s order to go and kill Jarul.

Major Battles

  • Gunko vs. Nami, Zeus, Usopp, Jinbe, Brook and Colon
  • Gunko vs. Scopper Gaban

Trivia

  • Gunko (軍子?) means “army child”.
  • The Shonen Jump magazine version of Chapter 1137 did not include the “Saint” (宮, Gū?) honorific in Gunko’s name or mention her belonging to the Manmayer Family. These were added in the Volume 112 release of the chapter.
  • She is the second female Celestial Dragon to be named in the series, 640 chapters after the introduction of Shalria (16 years 9 months 7 days).
