Introduction

The Straw Hat Pirates, also known as the Mugiwara Pirates, Straw Hat Crew or simply the Straw Hats, are an extremely infamous and powerful pirate crew that originated from the East Blue. They are the main focus and protagonists of the manga and anime One Piece and are led by the main protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. The “Straw Hats” are named after Luffy’s signature hat that was given to him by “Red-Haired” Shanks and formerly belonged to Gol D. Roger.

They are first referred to as the Straw Hat Pirates by Smoker in the Arabasta Kingdom. The crew sailed on the Going Merry, their first official ship, up until the Water 7 Arc. During the Post-Enies Lobby Arc, Franky and Iceburg built them a new ship, which was named the Thousand Sunny by Iceburg, even though the members fought over different names. Following the events on the Sabaody Archipelago, all the members were separated from one another by Bartholomew Kuma, a then-Warlord of the Sea and undercover agent of the Revolutionary Army, who pretended to kill them in order to save them from entering the New World too early due to their fatal lack of strength and obliviousness of…

Jolly Roger

The Jolly Roger emblem is a cartoon-like depiction of traditional skull and crossbones, with the skull wearing Luffy’s trademark straw hat. Due to Luffy’s morbid drawing skills, Usopp was the one who drew the flag. In addition to being on their flag, the Jolly Roger has also been shown on the sails of the Going Merry and the Thousand Sunny.

Crew Members

Main Crew

The crew currently consists of ten members, being smaller than a typical pirate crew; when he first set sail, Luffy set a goal of gaining ten crewmates. They have one former member, Nefertari Vivi, who sailed with the crew from Reverse Mountain to the Arabasta Kingdom. Despite their small size, the Straw Hats are an extremely diverse group possessing a large variety of backgrounds. Their members’ origins range from ordinary islanders and workers to bounty hunters, royalty, criminal gang members, and veteran pirates. Jinbe was once part of the renowned Seven Warlords of the Sea while Nami, Robin, and Franky were active enemies of the crew at certain points with the Arlong Pirates, Baroque Works and the Franky Family respectively. The crew consists of eight humans, one fish-man, and one animal with Devil Fruit-powered human intellect; of the humans, Sanji possesses superhuman modifications given to him at birth, Franky is a cyborg, and Brook possesses a skeleton body after being resurrected by a Devil Fruit power. They range in age from 17 (Chopper) to 90 (Brook); the median age of the crew is 21.

During their adventures, the crew members have often split into smaller groups to achieve multiple targets or tasks. Mostly, the group are divided by the common tasks of island exploring (often led by Luffy), ship guarding (often led by Zoro who wishes to nap or by Usopp who is afraid to disembark), and supply gathering (led by Sanji or Nami for food and finance respectively). When encountering enemies, the crew would often fight individually against their rivals, but they sometimes fight in small groups like Usopp and Chopper in Arabasta or during the Davy Back fight. They first started splitting into teams during the Skypiea Arc. After realizing that the lost city of Gold was on Upper Yard, they split the crew into the Escape Team (脱出組, Dasshutsu Gumi?) consisting of Sanji, Nami and Usopp, as well as their patient Gan Fall, and the Search Team (探索組, Tansaku Chīmu?, Funimation: “Exploration Team”) which was made up of Luffy, Zoro, Chopper and Robin.

The Exploration Team was assigned to find the city and steal the treasure before making it back to the ship, however they ended up getting split up after running into the giant python Nola. The Escape Team were meant to sail the ship to their rendezvous point at the coast, though Sanji and Usopp ended up getting ambushed by Enel, who stopped by to talk to Gan Fall. The ship eventually made it to the coast thanks to Conis and Pagaya, but Nami (along with Aisa who was picked up by the two) was chased away from the ship by Nola. In the filler G-8 Arc, after the Straw Hats realized that their gold was taken after accidentally landing in Navarone Island, the crew split up into teams. Nami, who had used the waver to escape the ship earlier, was sent with Sanji to get it back as part of the Waver Retrieval Team (ウエイバー回収班, Ueibā Kaishū Han?). The rest of the crew (except for Chopper who was assigned to watch the ship) was sent to find the gold, as the Gold Retrieval Team (黄金奪還班, Ōgon Dakkan Han?) though this ended in failure, as it wasn’t located where they thought it would be. During the Dressrosa Arc, the crew temporarily split in half due to the Big Mom Pirates’ unexpected attack on the Thousand Sunny. Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Robin, and Franky stayed on Dressrosa with Trafalgar Law and Kin’emon, while Sanji, Nami, Chopper, and Brook headed on to Zou in order to protect Caesar Clown and Kouzuki Momonosuke. The group heading to Zou was referred to as the Curly Hat Crew (ぐるわらの一味, Guruwara no Ichimi?, VIZ/Simulcast: “Twirly Hat Pirates”), named after Sanji, the de facto leader of the group. This same group forms the core of the Sanji Retrieval Team (サンジ奪還チーム, Sanji Dakkan Chīmu?) during the Whole Cake Island Arc, but with some personnel changes: Luffy has resumed leadership, Sanji was at Whole Cake Island, and the minks Pedro and Carrot accompanied them in their quest to retrieve Sanji. During their mission, they were joined by Jinbe who would later officially join the Straw Hats.

Grand Fleet

At the end of the Dressrosa Arc, the crew becomes the leader of an alliance called the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, which involves seven groups who sided with Luffy in the conflict between himself and Doflamingo, becoming subordinate to the Straw Hats, while maintaining their status as individual crews with their own free will. Cavendish, Bartolomeo, Sai, Ideo, Leo, Hajrudin, and Orlumbus asked to become Luffy’s subordinates by offering him a cup of sake. Luffy refused but said they would still be bonded by their fight against Doflamingo, and they would help each other out at any time. However, the captains decided to drink the sake anyway, pledging to come to Luffy’s aid whenever he needed them, while Luffy was not obligated to do the same. The Straw Hat Grand Fleet, consisting of 5640 people, was then formed, and a party ensued as their fleet departed from Dressrosa. The newspaper referred to Luffy as the “Senior Captain” (大船長, Dai Senchō?) and his crewmen as the “Senior Officers” (大幹部, Dai Kanbu?) of the Grand Fleet.

Noncanon Members

In the anime adaptation of the Long Ring Long Land Arc, the Straw Hats acquired 497 members of the Foxy Pirates, with the exception of 3 members who are Hamburg, Porche and Foxy. Due to the large number of crewmembers, and the Going Merry not being able to carry 497 more people, they confiscated the Sexy Foxy. However, they were all immediately kicked out by Luffy and left on the Sexy Foxy to pursue Foxy. In the game Legend of the Rainbow Island, Dias, a young boy, temporarily joins the crew. However, he leaves at the end of the game, refusing an invitation to become a permanent member.

Territories

While other Emperors were shown to gain territory for the purpose of gaining something for the price of their protection, like Big Mom with sweets or Kaidou and Blackbeard for military might and intel, the Straw Hats have only claimed their islands in order to protect their friends and allies. Furthermore, the Straw Hat Grand Fleet second division representative, Bartolomeo attempted to take over Gartel Island, which is under the Red Hair Pirates protection, however, that resulted in a failure and the crew’s defeat.

  • Fish-Man Island – the ruling royal family had shown interest in wanting to declare their island a territory of the Straw Hat Pirates and after news of their fight against Big Mom was made public, they decided to declare the island as being under their protection.
  • Wano Country – Luffy announced to Momonosuke that if anyone ever gave them any trouble, just show them his flag and let them know they’re picking a fight with the Straw Hats as well, implying that Luffy is declaring that Wano Country is under his protection.
  • Non-canonically, Tongari Island

Crew Strength

Despite having a small number of members, the Straw Hats are an extremely powerful crew with great potential, as stated by Kuzan when he first met them, they would eventually become a considerable threat to the World Government itself; a prediction that ultimately came true. Ever since they were first formed in the East Blue, they kept growing to the point of being capable of challenging and surpassing Warlord run organizations like Baroque Works, the Thriller Bark Pirates, and the Donquixote Pirates, and later crews captained by the Four Emperors like the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom Pirates. As their captain Monkey D. Luffy is now an Emperor, they are recognized as one of the four strongest pirate crews in the world. It should be noted that this accomplishment, level of strength and infamy has been achieved in just over 2 years from the start of their voyage.

The crew itself has done things which most would think impossible and were dubbed completely insane for even trying to but have succeeded nearly every time. The crew itself has done things which most would think impossible and were dubbed completely insane for even trying to but have succeeded nearly every time. They have entered and attacked the most hostile territories without fear in order to accomplish their objectives; this includes invading World Government stronghold Enies Lobby and defeating their superhuman assassin force CP9, infiltrating Big Mom’s territory of Totto Land and participating in an assassination attempt against her, and assaulting the Beasts Pirates’ stronghold of Onigashima in the closed-off nation of Wano to defeat both Kaidou and his forces as well as Big Mom. In all of these expeditions, they did battle with military forces numbering in the tens of thousands as well as vast fleets including the Marines’ Buster Call, an attack force designed to annihilate entire islands. Their campaigns against the Seven Warlords and Four Emperors have attracted the attention of the Five Elders who publicly rule the World Government and have caused them to be labeled as threats to the balance of the world; following their victory over Kaidou and Big Mom, they plunged the world into a level of chaos of very little to no precedent. During the following Egghead Incident, despite facing the might of all of the Five Elders, a Navy Admiral, CP0, the Seraphim, and another Buster Call, the crew of ten managed to hold their own remarkably well and escape while ultimately succeeding (in a way) their goal of safeguarding Vegapunk and escaping Egghead with him, with the assist of Bartholomew Kuma, Jewelry Bonney, Emet, and the Giant Warrior Pirates.

Good fortune has also played a role in the Straw Hats’ successes up to this point, though said fortune is not always due to pure coincidence; on some occasions, the Straw Hats have been aided by the arrival of an unexpected connection, or they have unwittingly done things in the past that help them in the future. An example of the former was when the Warlord Bartholomew Kuma saved them from certain defeat on Sabaody by transporting them to different islands, while an example of the latter was when the Straw Hats unwittingly caused an explosive-laden Tamatebako to be sent to Big Mom; the chest would go on to explode while the Sanji retrieval team was surrounded by the Big Mom Pirates, thus enabling them to escape. Another example of inexplicable fortune occurring was when the Going Merry arrived at Enies Lobby, seemingly on its own, to help the Straw Hats escape the Marine Buster Call in its final voyage. A testament to the crew’s reputation across the world is that Demaro Black and the Fake Straw Hat Crew were able to successfully use the crew’s name and image to accumulate a large number of powerful followers which included Super Rookies, and their actions instantly attracted the attention of the Marines. Upon realizing that the crew was composed of impostors, Sentomaru derided the strength of Black and his men in comparison to the Straw Hats, showing a level of respect for the crew despite his enmity with them. Two of its members, Luffy and Zoro, are part of the Worst Generation, a group made up of twelve infamous pirates known for their daring actions against the World Government and all have bounties in excess of 100,000,000. One of the most prominent testaments to their strength is that they are the only known crew where every single member has a bounty on their head. The Straw Hats’ combined bounties across their ten members equal 8,816,001,000, proving how dangerous the World Government sees them. The Straw Hats currently have at least five Poneglyph rubbings, three of which are Road Poneglyphs. This makes them the closest to reaching Laugh Tale since the Roger Pirates. Furthermore, Robin has discovered the location of two of the Ancient Weapons thanks to the poneglyphs she read in Arabasta and Shandora.

Fighting Capabilities

Despite their small crew size, the Straw Hat members are all accomplished fighters to various degrees, each member possessing notable accomplishments and victories over infamously powerful opponents. They have fought against multiple armies numbering in the thousands and have typically dominated the grunt troopers of these armies, as shown in their battles on Enies Lobby (vs. 10,000 Marines), Fish-Man Island (vs. 100,000 New Fish-Man Pirates), and Onigashima (vs. 30,000 Beasts Pirates).

Three of the top fighters of the crew Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, are called the Monster Trio (怪物3人組, Kaibutsu San-ningumi?) due to their immense strength, with Zoro and Sanji in particular being referred as the Pirates King’s Wings (海賊王の両翼, Kaizoku-ō no ryōyoku?) to Luffy, showing their dynamic. The Monster Trio typically act as the vanguard against powerful enemies and protect the other crew members in dangerous situations. During major battles, they tend to fight the strongest enemies on the opponent’s side. Among the Monster Trio, Luffy has received individual distinction for his fighting capabilities and is generally recognized to be the crew’s top fighting asset by himself, the Straw Hats, and those familiar with him. He has stated that his primary role in the crew, aside from being their leader, is to beat their opponents.

On Enies Lobby while fighting Rob Lucci, the most powerful member of CP9, Luffy directly acknowledged that if he could not defeat Lucci, the assassin would kill the other members of his crew without issue. In instances where Luffy has been rendered unable to fight against the primary opponent, his comrades have stood up to face the threat with the mindset of buying time for Luffy to return, believing only he would be able to attain victory in the end. Luffy has been primarily responsible for defeating the captains of the crews, leaders of organizations or any other powerful opponent the Straw Hats fight, including the three Warlords (Crocodile, Gecko Moria, and Donquixote Doflamingo) he has also beaten Hody Jones, the captain of the New Fish-Man Pirates, the tyrant Enel of Skypiea, the infamous assassin Rob Lucci of CP9, two of the Big Mom Pirates top officers, Sweet Commanders Charlotte Cracker and Charlotte Katakuri and the fierce Emperor of the Sea Kaidou. Zoro and Sanji, meanwhile, have generally fought the top subordinates of enemy captains and other opposing foes; Zoro has also defeated formidable opponents on the opposing side such as Daz Bonez, Kaku, and Pica; Sanji has too defeated very powerful, high-ranking officers of enemies such as Bon Kurei and Jabra. These two have most recently defeated King and Queen, who are two of the Beasts Pirates’ top executives known as the All-Stars.

While not part of the Monster Trio, Jinbe has been recognized as another top combatant of the crew, established by his experience as a veteran pirate and former Warlord of the Sea. He was able to overpower Gecko Moria, another Warlord, during the Summit War of Marineford, briefly overthrow Big Mom in two instances with his own strength, and defeat Who’s-Who, a former CP9 agent and a member of the Tobiroppo. Robin, Franky, and Brook have not been recognized as members of the strongest or weakest subgroups of the crew, with the three of them each demonstrating themselves to be powerful combatants capable of easily defeating groups of grunt fighters and challenging lower-ranking officers of enemy groups. Robin and Franky have singlehandedly defeated members of the Tobiroppo (Black Maria and Sasaki respectively). Other notable feats performed by this group include Brook challenging Big Mom in single combat and, though failing, being recognized for putting up a determined fight, and some of these members have even defeated multiple officers and underlings of powerful enemies like Senor Pink against Franky, Yama against Robin, and Brook defeating all of Black Maria’s subordinates in one blow (Including multiple Gifters and one of the Numbers).

The lower three fighters, Nami, Usopp, and Chopper are called the Weakling Trio (弱少トリオ, Jakushō Torio?). By contrast to the Monster Trio, the Weakling Trio are often the most hesitant to partake in combat and collectively voice their fear in the face of frightening places or foes, unless their hand is forced, or they consider their enemies’ actions or words unforgivable enough to want to take action. Despite this, they have often factored into the Straw Hats’ greatest battles with enemy groups, with Nami having defeated Baroque Works officer agent Miss Doublefinger, CP9 agent Kalifa, and Tobiroppo Ulti (besting the former two singlehandedly), Usopp defeating the Thriller Bark Pirates Mysterious Four member Perona and Donquixote Pirates Special Officer Sugar, Chopper beating CP9 agent Kumadori, and Usopp and Chopper together beating officer agents Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas; Chopper has even taken on the All-Star Queen and managed to physically challenge him for a brief period, but was not able to land any meaningful damage against him. All members of the Monster Trio possess Haki, with Luffy and Zoro possessing all three types and achieving advanced applications, Sanji and Jinbe both have Armament and Observation Haki, which the latter is quite proficient in, and despite his placement in the Weakling Trio, Usopp has awakened Observation Haki which he has used to aid in his sniping. The Straw Hats’ growth in strength throughout their journey has often been marked by their constant innovation of their abilities and tools as they develop new techniques to better challenge the steadily stronger opponents they meet. Four members of the crew possess Devil Fruit abilities: Luffy, Chopper, Robin, and Brook. Luffy has awakened his fruit and has used its alteration of his body in a massive variety of creative ways to adopt new forms which increase his power and fighting capabilities. Chopper has used his scientific intellect to go beyond the standard three forms of a Zoan user, shifting his body into numerous different fighting forms. Robin and Brook have both demonstrated significant advanced development of their Paramecia abilities, with Brook even discovering methods of using his fruit in battle when it was previously thought to have no fighting capabilities. Nami, Usopp, and Franky, who use special weapons and machinery in combat, have constantly upgraded their tools in order to unleash more powerful, effective, and creative techniques.

Specializations And Teamwork

Another notable feature of the Straw Hats is that each of their members possesses a specific and unique position in the crew which maximizes their talents, and each member has been recognized for having a significant level of competency in their role. The Straw Hats are very familiar with what strengths each of their crewmates possess and have been consistently willing to defer situations to the person most well-suited for them without issue or intervene with issues involving a crewmate they know is not suited for them. This intimate familiarity with each other’s abilities has made the Straw Hats able to achieve great results when teaming up in combat, including performing effective tag-team attacks as well as instances of one member using their abilities to weaken an opponent and thus aid another member in attacking them. A notable example of successful teamwork occurred when Nami, Chopper, Brook, and Jinbe were able to put together an effective counterattack against Big Mom herself when she attacked the Sunny, keeping the Emperor at bay for a considerable period of time despite the vast difference in power between the two sides.

  • Luffy, the captain, has been highly regarded for his leadership by numerous people not in the crew, as evidenced by the massive number of allies and pledges of servitude he has unwillingly attracted; he has recently been recognized as one of the Four Emperors.
  • Zoro, the combatant, has almost never lost a fight with the crew and has commanded great respect and fear for his fighting skills even before joining; his combat skills have evoked the image of a pirate captain to some onlookers.
  • Nami, the navigator, possesses advanced knowledge in geographic science, which has aided in her navigation and cartography work; her cartography skills were coveted by the infamous pirate Arlong even going back to her childhood, and had greatly aided the Straw Hat crew during their journey throughout the Grand Line.
  • Usopp, the sniper, has consistently demonstrated remarkable sharpshooting skill since the beginning, to the point of pulling off nearly physically impossible feats.
  • Sanji, the cook, has a vast culinary knowledge and repertoire; he currently knows how to prepare the okama Attack Cuisine and was able to lead a team in making a wedding cake in just hours (when it took days previously) that its consumer, Big Mom, enjoyed in a way she has never done for a wedding cake before.
  • Chopper, the doctor, is well-versed in treating a litany of injuries and illnesses; one of his most notable accomplishments was developing a cure for the devastating man-made virus Ice Oni in less than an hour’s time.
  • Robin, the archaeologist, possesses the extremely rare knowledge of how to read the Poneglyphs, a skill vital to reaching Laugh Tale.
  • Franky, the shipwright, constructed the Straw Hats’ current ship the Thousand Sunny which has traversed extremely treacherous waters while sustaining little damage overall. He also possesses highly advanced technology developed by the world’s greatest scientist Vegapunk, which he has been able to develop and use to suit his interests.
  • Brook, the musician, has demonstrated the ability to weaponize his music during combat situations, in addition to its entertainment value which led to him becoming a worldwide celebrity during the timeskip.
  • Jinbe, the helmsman, was noted during the Straw Hats’ escape from Totto Land to “know all there is to know” about the ocean’s waves and currents, which he utilized to outpace the Big Mom Pirates’ fleet and frustrate them.

Allies And Subordinates

The Straw Hats have formed numerous alliances, both official and unofficial, across the world in nearly every location they have visited, giving them a vast network spanning just about all of the world’s organizations and social classes. These allies range from other infamous pirates, to citizens, and even to royalty and other influential government members; they have even managed to win the favor of Marine soldiers, although such collaborations have typically been limited and temporary. Luffy is considered to be the primary factor in their accumulation of allies, being noted by onlookers to have a unique gift for turning just about anyone he meets into an ally. These allies have assisted the Straw Hats in the majority of their large-scale battles, namely in Enies Lobby, Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, and Wano Country. Out of admiration for Luffy’s actions and leadership during the Dressrosa conflict, seven groups which fought alongside the Straw Hats decided to serve under them, forming the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. This fleet consists of 5640 total members across the seven crews, with most of the crews being led by infamous rising New World pirates who defeated officers of the Donquixote Pirates in single combat. The crews are also diverse, containing giants, dwarves, longarms, and longlegs in their ranks. What has made the Straw Hats’ current command over subordinates and territory special is that they have never actively sought to obtain them, as noted by the circumstances of Fish-Man Island becoming their territory. In fact, Luffy actively rejected the Straw Hat Grand Fleet’s request to serve under him, as he believes that having subordinates would restrict his freedom. In spite of this rejection, the Grand Fleet’s admiration of him was so great that they declared their allegiance to Luffy anyways, being willing to serve him whenever he should call on them.

Weaknesses

Though they have performed numerous unlikely feats, the Straw Hats are not invincible and have not always come out victorious in the battles they instigate. The crew splits up very frequently during their expeditions, which causes their already small numbers to be stretched even thinner and leaves them more vulnerable to concentrated enemy attacks. Given the disparity in strength amongst their members, this may result in weaker members ending up in one-on-one mismatches with members of more balanced enemy groups. Additionally, their small size has resulted in them being vulnerable against enemy reinforcements following victories against their initial foes, which tend to leave them weakened. The Straw Hats’ worst defeat came on the Sabaody Archipelago, where they were left almost completely spent after defeating a single Pacifista, only to be confronted by more Pacifistas, Sentomaru, and Marine Admiral Kizaru. It was this total defeat that ultimately led them decide to train for two years to become stronger, and they have generally done well at recognizing the need to progress their abilities for coming conflicts which has allowed them to remain active and grow in power despite the extremely dangerous situations they get into. The majority of the Straw Hats, particularly Luffy, tend to be very trusting and sometimes gullible which has led to them being trapped on occasion. One such instance came on Whisky Peak, where they were very nearly captured by Baroque Works after unquestioningly accepting their hospitality; only Zoro taking measures to catch this trap saved the rest of the crew.

Ships

The very first Ship of the Straw Hat Pirates was the Going Merry. It was a caravel that served as their main transportation through the East Blue, and the Grand Line up until Water 7. Due to the love and care the ship received from the crew, a Klabautermann inhabited the ship, effectively giving life to the ship. As a result, the Merry was capable of making repairs to herself, sailed herself all the way to Enies Lobby, and could even communicate with the crew. After accumulating an incredible amount of damage over the course of her travels with the crew, the Merry could no longer continue sailing and after helping the Straw Hats escape Enies Lobby, the Straw Hat gave her a Viking funeral. With the destruction of the Going Merry, a new ship was built by Franky, Iceburg and the Galley-La Company to act as the “successor” to Merry and serve as the Straw Hats new ship. The ship was named the Thousand Sunny. The Thousand Sunny is a brigantine-type ship that is double the size of the Going Merry and was built from the incredibly durable Adam Wood, the same wood used to create the Oro…

Unlike the Merry, the Sunny has a variety of features fueled by Cola that allows it to better traverse the dangerous seas of the Grand Line, with the main feature being the Coup de Burst; which propels the ship into the air for escape maneuvers.

  • Mini Merry II: a small four-person steam boat for shopping made by Franky, built and designed in memory of the Going Merry.
  • Shark Submerge III: a shark-themed, deep-sea exploring submarine made by Franky, which can carry up to three people.
  • Kurosai FR-U IV: a single-seated, giant black motorcycle with three wheels and the armored figurehead of a rhino, made and used by Franky. One of two vehicles needed to form the General Franky.
  • Brachio Tank V: a small tank with a brachiosaurus-themed mouth, made by Franky, and can carry at least four passengers. One of two vehicles needed to form the General Franky.
  • General Franky: a giant robot which can be formed after “docking” the Kurosai FR-U IV and Brachio Tank V vehicles together. The General Franky is modeled and piloted by Franky and is mainly used for combat.

Professions And Capabilities

Bounties

Though they are pirates in name, the Straw Hat Pirates do not engage in the stereotypical activities of pirates. They are all kindhearted for the most part and only fight in self-defense or vengeance for their friends. In fact, before the Enies Lobby Arc, when CP9 initiated the conflict by blackmailing Nico Robin and detaining her, the Straw Hats mostly fought only other pirates (except for Luffy and Zoro, who took down the dreaded Axe Hand Morgan and several of his unwilling subordinates, Sanji, who beat up Fullbody and possibly some other unfortunate Marines before becoming an official Straw Hat, and Jinbe, who had numerous skirmishes during his time as a member of the Sun Pirates). It seems they were considered dangerous to the World Government and given bounties simply because they called themselves pirates. They are considered villains by the World Government and the general public who are not familiar with them, making this is a hassle for them at times. Like most other pirates, the majority of the Straw Hats see their bounties as a form of achievement, a sign of how much fame and recognition their actions have produced. Each member of the crew values their friendships very highly. Despite their usual comic annoyance with each other from time to time, they very much love being together as well as being a member of the crew. So much so, that they tend to forget their worries and burdens, as shown with Nami, Robin, Franky, and Brook. One of the major themes of the series is how committed they are to each other, to the point where they are willing to give up what is important to them, such as their lives, and even their dreams, for one of their crew members. If one single member is hurt by an outside force (physically or emotionally), the other members will become enraged and take drastic action to avenge their friends.

Previously, they have gone as far as to take on an entire organization, make enemies with the World Government, and even attack the World Nobles. Previously, they have gone as far as to take on an entire organization, make enemies with the World Government, and even attack the World Nobles. Examples of their camaraderie include: During their fight with Bartholomew Kuma, Sanji, Zoro, and Brook threw themselves in front of their friends to keep Kuma from getting to them. After Luffy was overwhelmed with grief over Ace’s death, not only was he able to overcome his pain by remembering that he still had his crew, but the others struggled to return to him for support when they realized how hurt Luffy would be. Upon receiving his message to wait two years, they all reminisced on how Luffy changed their lives for the better and resolved to use that time to hone their skills in order to be more useful to him and protect each other better from any danger. If any of them encounter a person that the crew dislikes either because of a past event or simply because that member is against what that person is doing, then the rest of the crew will hold a deep grudge against that person and will express the desire to attack them and will not show them any mercy.

When Vivi (despite not being a crew member) showed her hatred of Crocodile, the rest of the crew, especially Luffy, all had the intention of taking him down without even knowing him. When Brook told the Straw Hats of how Moria stole his shadow, Luffy immediately asked where he was so he could get Brook’s shadow back despite just meeting the skeleton, while the others were all behind him. A common trait shared among the crew is that they all refuse to show mercy to people who have committed particularly immoral and inhumane acts. The most notable example of this is Caesar, who earned the crew’s wrath for his vile acts during the Punk Hazard Arc, including sick experiments on children and drugging them with a lethal and highly addictive drug; even though he accompanied the crew on their ship, Caesar was still kept as a prisoner and the crew refused to interact with him in a friendly tone, forcing him to act by beating him when they needed his help and repeatedly making it clear that what he did was unforgivable. However, even if someone was an enemy in the past, the crew is capable of treating them with empathy and respect, provided that person proves to be genuinely altruistic.

The most notable example of this is Bentham, who, despite being a major antagonist in the Arabasta Arc, revealed himself to be a person of strong moral values. After fleeing from Arabasta, he steals Going Merry, only to tell the Straw Hats he was keeping it safe from the Marines. He later acts as a decoy so the Straw Hats can escape from the Marines after being moved by their wish to see their friend Vivi again. Later in Impel Down, Luffy meets up with Bentham and their friendship reaches new heights, with Bentham screaming for three days straight to support Luffy’s recovery, before again staying behind to open the gates so Luffy and the other prisoners can escape. However, there have also been occasions when the Straw Hats argue amongst themselves for various reasons.

Most prominently, such confrontations take place between Zoro and Sanji (mainly caused by their frequent dislike towards various aspects of one another), and are relatively comic in nature. However, there have also been occasions when other crew members have experienced major conflicts between each other, which have been known to end in tragedy and heartbreak. One notable example is Usopp’s fury at Luffy opting to abandon the Going Merry in favor of another ship at Water 7. As a result, Usopp seemingly left the crew, heartbroken and angry at Luffy’s apparent disregard for Merry. However, these conflicts, though indeterminate in length, rarely ever last – Usopp nonetheless accompanied the crew in his guise as Sogeking, before formally rejoining them as they set off on their new ship, the Thousand Sunny. In addition to this, the likes of Sanji and Zoro will often put aside their rivalry to accomplish a common goal, though this ranges from their having a mutual enemy to outright competing against each other. As such, the Straw Hats are a group that works towards their personal morals and convictions, with each member of the crew being ready and willing to help out the other, often putting aside all misgivings. For example, when Nami and Chopper both expressed their wish to help out the kidnapped children on Punk Hazard, and the poison gas victims on Zou, though the others did warn them of potential troubles that may occur if they do so, they unhesitatingly helped them regardless. However, if one crew member acted out against the wishes of the rest, the others will do everything in their power to steer them back towards themselves, just like how they went out of their way to rescue Robin, after she attempted to sacrifice herself for the Straw Hats without their consent in the Water 7 Saga.

Dreams

Each member of the Straw Hats has a dream they want to achieve. These dreams are their reasons for joining Luffy’s crew, and essentially the driving force behind their lives. Most crew member’s dream was inspired by tragedies (often deaths) in their childhoods that involved at least one person they idolized and cared for deeply. Some, like Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Franky, and Jinbe are fulfilling their dreams by accumulating knowledge and/or achieving a certain task while sailing the Grand Line. Others, like Sanji, Robin, and Brook are searching for a person, place or thing that can only be found on the Grand Line. Whatever the reason, each of the Straw Hat’s dreams involves traveling the Grand Line, and each Straw Hat member refuses to die before achieving their dreams. However, their determination does not extend to sacrificing or abandoning their comrades for the fulfillment of their dreams. So far, only Luffy’s dream isn’t entirely known, apart from a select few.

Members Dreams

  • Luffy’s dream is known to only a few people: his crew, sworn brothers Ace and Sabo, and role model Shanks, and indirectly Yamato and Momonosuke, and it is said to be the same original goal of Gol D. Roger. In order to achieve it he decides to become the Pirate King and gather his own pirate crew to back him up. To become the Pirate King, he must find Roger’s famed treasure, One Piece, which is implied to be on Laugh Tale. As for a crew, he has brought together nine people so far who have caught his attention. Luffy is also looking to meet up with Shanks again and return his straw hat to him but will only do this after his crew has surpassed Shanks’ crew in strength.
  • Zoro’s dream, shared with Kuina, is to become the world’s greatest swordsman. To fulfill this dream, he must surpass every swordsman in the world, including the world’s current greatest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk. Zoro nearly gave up his dream in an attempt to convince the Warlord of the Sea, Bartholomew Kuma to refrain from killing Luffy despite that the first time they met Zoro threatened to kill Luffy if he got in the way of his dream, proving his loyalty towards his captain as well as the rest of the crew, as he believes that he cannot be the world’s strongest swordsman if he cannot protect his captain’s dream (Luffy, likewise, believes that the Pirate King should have the best swordsman on his side).
  • Nami’s dream is to draw a map of the entire world. She has already mapped all the areas that she has traveled, and it can be assumed that she will create a world map once the story is over. Also, at the beginning of the story, she was also trying to get 100,000,000 in order to buy and save her hometown, Cocoyasi Village, from the clutches of the Fish-Man pirate Arlong; while her savings were confiscated after stealing 93,000,000, in the process of stealing from pirates, she met Luffy, who defeated Arlong and freed the village.
  • Usopp’s dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea like his father, Yasopp. Although he implies that he has accomplished this dream (before he leaves the crew), but eventually realizes on his confrontation with Luffy that he has yet to achieve it, Usopp has a second dream. After the Little Garden Arc he hopes to visit Elbaph and see the warrior giants he idolizes, and during the Post-War Arc Usopp develops yet another dream, to be the true Sniper King, after he got Luffy’s message to get stronger in two years.
  • Sanji’s dream, shared with Zeff, is to find the All Blue, a legendary ocean. It is assumed to be in the Grand Line, a place where all waters from all over the four seas gather, bringing fish from all over the globe. During the early-Arlong Arc, Sanji had stated that he wanted to visit Fish-Man Island someday to see a Mermaid, which has been fulfilled; sure enough, the chef broke down crying upon seeing all the mermaids and implied that meeting the mermaids was on an equivalent level to finding the All-Blue. He also wished to consume the Suke Suke no Mi but unfortunately for him, Absalom destroyed that dream as he had already eaten it. However, upon seeing Absalom’s detestable actions, Sanji changed his mind about his desire to consume it. Ironically, because of his recently acquired Raid Suit and its power of invisibility, Sanji’s childhood dream of turning invisible has been restored and fulfilled through the Germa technology he hated. Sanji nearly gave up on his dream of locating All Blue when he prioritized protecting Zeff from the death threats of his father and the Big Mom Pirates.
  • Chopper’s dream is to become a great doctor that can cure any disease, much like his father figure Dr. Hiriluk’s ambition, as well as to travel across the world, exploring with his friends, and expanding his horizons.
  • Robin’s dream is to find the Rio Poneglyph which tells the True History of the One Piece world including the Void Century, continuing the research of her mother Nico Olvia and her old mentor Clover. Robin had an opportunity to learn about the Void Century after talking to Silvers Rayleigh but decided to continue her journey. Recently, she learned about the Road Poneglyphs, which point to Laugh Tale and the Rio Poneglyph.
  • Franky’s dream is to build and travel on a ship which would experience countless battles, can overcome extreme hardships and can reach the end of the Grand Line just like the Oro Jackson, the ship built by Franky’s mentor Tom for Gol D. Roger, did. He has designed and built the ship which the Straw Hats are riding and it’s his task to keep it in good condition. Previously, one of his dreams was to beat Spandam to pieces. Fortunately, this was fulfilled toward the end of the Enies Lobby Arc.
  • Brook’s dream is to return to Laboon, whom his former crew, the Rumbar Pirates, had left behind at Reverse Mountain for his safety, with the promise to return after crossing the Grand Line. He wishes to fulfill that promise to Laboon, as well as that of his former crewmates, who died at their journey, to deliver their final song recorded in a tone dial before their death.
  • Jinbe’s dream, which he inherited from his former captain, Fisher Tiger, is the coexistence of humans and the undersea dwellers. He initially resigned from Neptune’s Royal Guards to join Tiger in his quest for equality, and then allied himself with the World Government by becoming a Warlord of the Sea, and with two Emperors (Edward Newgate and Charlotte Linlin) in order to protect the citizens of Fish-Man Island from being attacked. However, as stated by the Sun Pirates, those actions were mostly for the benefit of others, as they encouraged him to follow his new desire to help Luffy become the next Pirate King.

Former Members Dreams

  • Vivi’s dream was to save her home country, the kingdom of Arabasta, from the coup planned by then Warlord of the Sea, Crocodile and his secret organization, Baroque Works. After her cover as a member of the group was revealed, she enlisted the Straw Hats’ help, initially as a business arrangement, though it later became a matter of friendship. After the crew stopped Crocodile’s plan and her dream achieved, she decided to stay behind to rebuild her home and repair the damage caused by Baroque Works, both physical and social.
  • The Going Merry’s dream as the crew’s ship was to sail with the Straw Hats forever which it revealed to the crew upon its demise. Due to its destruction, the Going Merry’s dream appeared to go unfulfilled. However, Merry’s dream lives on through the Straw Hats’ new ship, the Thousand Sunny.

The X Mark

The X Mark is something the first seven Straw Hats (Luffy to Chopper), as well as Karoo, had on their left forearms. During the Arabasta Arc, they had to face a very tricky opponent, Mr. 2, with his Devil Fruit Power, which can make him look like any one of them. Zoro came up with an idea to counteract this power. They made a black X mark on their left arms, as a symbol of their belonging to the Straw Hats. To prevent this being copied by Mr. 2, it was covered by a bandage and only revealed as proof of identity. The intention being that the band appeared to be proof, but in fact, concealed the true sign. Luffy then stated that the X mark was a symbol of their friendship. The X mark came into play three times in Arabasta: The mark later mysteriously re-appeared on Luffy’s arm in an image of him in a newspaper article about the Egghead Incident.

Straw Hat Pirates › Recruitment

Introduction

In the beginning of the manga, Luffy claimed that he wanted at least ten people to join his crew before entering the Grand Line (not counting himself). This was changed after Usopp had told Luffy that after “the chef” joined them, they would rescue Nami and go to the Grand Line. Although this is long past the expiration date, it can still serve as evidence that there will be at least ten Straw Hats at one point of the manga (excluding Luffy himself). Luffy also claimed in the beginning of the manga, that he would gather a crew strong enough to surpass his childhood hero Red-Haired Shanks. Luffy also claimed in the beginning of the manga, that he would gather a crew strong enough to surpass his childhood hero Red-Haired Shanks.

Invitation

Usually when he asks someone to join, Luffy is turned down completely; though the way of which he is turned down varies. Luffy never forces people to join his crew against their will. When Luffy asked Brook during the Thriller Bark Arc, Brook said yes immediately. Luffy did not directly ask Usopp to join the Straw Hats, however when Luffy, Zoro and Nami were about to sail off, Luffy assumed that Usopp would join them as they had just fought off Kuro. The only exception was Franky who was stated to be too stubborn to ever accept joining Luffy willingly (his swim briefs had to be stolen just to lead him back to the Straw Hat Pirates), but ends up joining willingly anyway after being moved by Iceburg’s words.

However, if the person interests Luffy very much, he will still try to get them to join anyway regardless of their initial decision. While most people turn down Luffy’s offer regardless of how hard he tries, only those convinced enough will join for reasons of their own. However, even if he is rejected, Luffy will treat the person as if they were already a crew member, much to their annoyance. He will sometimes act as if it is his decision and not theirs whether they join or not (though it is worth noting that when Luffy’s decided someone is joining, they do eventually join). Although, when he tried to recruit Kureha to be their doctor, she refused.

The major exceptions to this rule are Usopp, who was thrilled to be asked to join and accepted immediately, and Nico Robin, who invited herself into the crew and had to convince the crew to let her stay. Also notable was Brook, who actually accepted Luffy’s initial invitation to join the crew, but later claimed that he could not honor it due to his lack of a shadow, which would result in his death should he step into sunlight, as well as unfinished business with the zombies of Thriller Bark. However, after the Straw Hats and Brook finally defeated the zombies, Brook later asked if they would honor his initial acceptance and Luffy gladly welcomed him into the crew, though everyone else were shocked by Brook just asking like that. Jinbe also wanted to join after being asked, but he stated he had had unfinished business to do (which was to leave his alliance with the Big Mom Pirates), but did state if they still want him to join after that’s done, he will gladly join the Straw Hats. Following the Raid on Onigashima, Kin’emon, Kurozumi Tama, Yamato, and Kozuki Momonosuke were all offered spots on the crew should Luffy see them again. Luffy does not seem to mind if someone he wants to recruit has a profession or not. He allowed Usopp to join, and later on names him the team’s sniper, and considered Vivi and Karoo members even though her only “profession” would be a princess. He also did not know that Chopper was a doctor and wanted him to join for his seven transformation abilities. He also offered Gaimon and several Thriller Bark zombies the chance to join his crew, when they had no apparent usefulness to the crew aside from experience and their uniqueness respectively. Also, when a crew member finally joins, they are often run out of their home by loved ones, mostly out of goodwill to encourage to leave pursue their dreams. Luffy’s tendency to ask people who interest him to join often led him to attempt to recruit bizarre creatures into his crew at a whim (such as Chopper, Brook, Unigaro, MocDonald, and Kin’emon’s severed legs; the latter three never joined the crew eventually), which would annoy the rest of the crew, prompting them to snap at him to stop.

Recruiting Process

Though most adventures in One Piece are random, there seems to be a “process” for recruitment: The only crew members not to follow this process were the female members, Nami and Robin, both of whom never helped fight an enemy during their joining and had their backstories fully revealed later on, despite initially being hinted at. Nami’s official recruitment was when Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji defeated Arlong and his pirates. Robin was the first to initially join willingly, and then officially joined after the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates had arrived to her rescue from CP9. Jinbe’s recruitment process was quite different, as he officially joined the crew only after several arcs from the first time he fought an enemy alongside the entire crew. As a side note to this process, Luffy has several times stated the need for a musician, because he believes that “pirates love music” due to him being influenced by Shanks the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates whom are mostly seen singing and partying. As a result, whenever the need for a new crew member arises, Luffy would usually bring up the musician position despite it being completely unrelated to the problem at hand. While Franky plays the ukulele in addition of being a shipwright, Luffy’s plea was finally fulfilled when Brook joined the crew. On the opposite side of the spectrum, when seven groups pledged their allegiance to the crew, Luffy declined as he was disinterested in having a fleet under him. Nevertheless, the group would be collectively known as the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, in which the World Government recognizes them as part of Luffy’s expansive crew.

  • First, a situation arises where someone new is needed. The crew comes across someone who fulfills the criteria (i.e., Nami the navigator, Sanji the cook, Chopper the doctor, Franky the shipwright, etc.). Luffy offers the person a position, and is usually turned down initially (which usually causes Luffy to comically “refuse this refusal”).
  • Meanwhile, a situation arises where, some way or another, Luffy ends up battling a ‘boss’ character, and the would-be crewmate battles an underling (i.e., Luffy vs Don Krieg after Sanji battles Gin and Pearl, and Luffy vs Wapol as Chopper battles Chessmarimo). The would-be crewmate typically defeats one of the villain’s henchmen, or otherwise plays a crucial role in the Straw Hats’ victory (for example, Brook defeats Tararan and reveals the zombies’ weakness, despite losing to Ryuma).
  • During the arc in which the new crewmate is introduced, their backstory and dreams are revealed, (although Nami and Robin’s back stories were revealed later) thus convincing them to join the Straw Hat Crew.
  • Meanwhile, Luffy’s current crew would assist them in battling various enemies, generally in rank of abilities and overall strength, which is matched by whoever they are battling (e.g., Zoro vs. Kaku, Sanji vs. Jabra, Chopper vs. Kumadori, Nami vs. Kalifa), the enemies fought also have similar fighting styles (Zoro vs. Hatchan who are both swordsmen, Sanji vs. Kuroobi who are both martial art experts, and Usopp vs. Chew who are both ranged weaponry experts), this is more consistent when it concerns Sanji and Zoro (and later on, Franky, against close combat experts). This process also led many fans to think Vivi would become a permanent crew member, even though she decided to stay in Arabasta and Nico Robin became the new crew member instead.

Returning To The Crew

If a Straw Hat crew member leaves the crew without Luffy’s permission, Luffy does his best to recruit them back. So far, Nami, Robin, and Usopp have all chosen to officially leave the crew in the past, before returning. Additionally, Chopper and Sanji have been coerced by third parties to leave the crew against their wishes, with Chopper returning soon afterwards, and Sanji leaving for about a week. Nami rejoined after the defeat of Arlong, who had blackmailed her into betraying the crew, while Robin rejoined the crew after they convinced her that they would stand by her even if it meant declaring war on the World Government, and saving her from Enies Lobby and probable incarceration at Impel Down. However, while Robin and Nami were never on bad terms with the crew when they left, any suspicion that they had betrayed the Straw Hats was soon proven false.

Usopp was a different case; he had officially left the Straw Hat crew, over a dispute concerning the Going Merry and his own insecurities about his strength. He temporarily returned to the crew under his alias “Sogeking” to help in the rescue of Nico Robin. Afterward, Usopp originally planned to make the crew beg for him to return, but Zoro had given the crew a stern speech about him rejoining them on their terms, not his, and would accept him only if Usopp begged them after a thorough apology. After being ignored while they were fighting off Garp, Usopp finally apologized, and Luffy happily and tearfully accepted him back into the crew. After losing the first game of the Davy Back Fight, Chopper was selected by Foxy to join his crew; as part of this, Chopper was required to swear allegiance to his new captain.

However, after Zoro and Sanji defeated the Groggy Monsters in the second game, Luffy reclaimed Chopper into the crew. On Zou, Sanji agreed to his arranged marriage to Charlotte Pudding, as Vito explained to him that Big Mom would send a loved one’s decapitated head if he refuses. It was explained by Pekoms to Luffy that, if and when the marriage is formalized, Sanji will automatically cease to be a member of the Straw Hats and will become a member of the Big Mom Pirates. However, it turns out to be false, as Big Mom’s true intention is to assassinate Sanji and the entire Vinsmoke Family during the ceremony. During the prelude of the marriage, Sanji, under duress, acted thoroughly disrespectful to Luffy and Nami in an attempt to get them to give up on him, though Luffy did not buy it, seeing Sanji’s insincerity, and eventually managed to assist him to escape without consequence. Jinbe never formally left the Straw Hat Pirates, but was separated from the rest of his new crew shortly after joining. He declared he would join the Straw Hat Pirates after cutting ties with Big Mom, to which his former crew, the Sun Pirates, agreed to. However, when the Sun Pirates were under attack by Big Mom, Jinbe stayed behind to help his former crew fight Big Mom. Luffy solidified Jinbe’s status as his new captain as Jinbe was separated, and Jinbe promised to reunite with them, a promise he kept upon reuniting with his new crew in full (as only half of the crew was on Totto Land when he joined) during the Raid on Onigashima.

Luffy of the Straw Hat Pirates, Paulie of the Galley-La Company, and Zambai of the Franky Family formed an alliance on the way to Enies Lobby to rescue Nico Robin and Franky from the World Government, as well as retaliate against CP9 for the assassination attempt on Iceburg. The majority of the help occurred in the courtyard and courthouse in order to help the Straw Hats reach the Tower of Justice and face the CP9 agents, with the Franky Family entrusting Franky’s rescue to the pirates. The allies went their separate ways when the Straw Hats continued their journey with Franky as their new Shipwright, and the Franky Family started working for Iceburg and the Galley-La. This alliance is aided by Kokoro, Chimney, Gonbe, Yokozuna, Oimo, Kashii, Iceburg and Usopp under the alias “Sogeking”.

Straw Hatheart Alliance

An alliance between the Straw Hat Pirates and the Heart Pirates formed on Punk Hazard by their two captains in order to defeat Kaidou, one of the Four Emperors of the New World. According to Law, who proposed the alliance, their cooperation would give them a 30% chance to defeat the emperor. The plan was to destroy Kaidou’s source of SMILE delivered by Doflamingo, weakening him while letting Doflamingo take on Kaidou’s anger. However, the events on Dressrosa made Law concerned about Kaidou’s reaction. This alliance is aided by Kin’emon, Momonosuke, Kanjuro, and an unwilling Caesar Clown, and briefly by the G-5 marines under Vice Admiral Smoker and Captain Tashigi, the kidnapped kids used for Caesar experiments, and Brownbeard on Punk Hazard, and by the Corrida Colosseum fighters including the Straw Hat Grand Fleet members, Elizabello II, Dagama, the Riku Family, the citizens of Dressrosa and Green Bit, a representative of the Revolutionary Army, and Admiral Fujitora on Dressrosa. The alliance eventually would grow to become the “Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance” on Zou.

Ninjapirateminksamurai Alliance

An alliance of the Kouzuki Family retainers with the Straw Hat-Heart Alliance formed on Zou in response to Momonosuke’s request for the pirates to help him avenge his parents against the Beasts Pirates and the shogun of Wano Country and release Wano from their control. This alliance is aided by Zunesha and the Kouzuki Family allies and rebels from Wano led by Jibuemon. They later recruited more Kouzuki Family allies including past followers of Oden, Shimotsuki Yasuie and Hyougoro, which led to the support of Udon’s prisoners and the Yakuza, and finding Kouzuki Hiyori and the rest of the Nine Red Scabbards, recruiting strong groups led by two of its members.

Sanji Retrieval Teamfire Tank Alliance

An alliance formed between the Sanji Retrieval Team and the Fire Tank Pirates. Both groups agreed to work together during Big Mom’s Tea Party, the main event of which will be the wedding ceremony between the Germa Kingdom’s third prince (and the Straw Hats’ cook), Sanji, and Big Mom’s 35th daughter, Charlotte Pudding. While the two groups share a common opposition to Big Mom, they have slightly different goals: The Straw Hats want to prevent Big Mom’s planned assassination of Sanji and his family during the event, while Capone Bege, Captain of the Fire Tank Pirates, wants to use the opportunity to take down Big Mom herself. The alliance was offered by Jinbe after hearing of both wedding day conspiracies from Pekoms, who was targeted by the Fire Tank Pirates, and Brook, who was present when Pudding and Big Mom discussed their plans. The alliance is supported by Jinbe and the Sun Pirates, Charlotte Chiffon, Bege’s wife and Big Mom’s 22nd daughter, an unwilling Caesar Clown, and Big Mom Pirates members Charlotte Brûlée and Diesel.

The Vinsmoke Family later joined the allied forces as Big Mom’s true intentions was revealed to them, and Brûlée was rescued by her brother. After the collapse of the Whole Cake Chateau, the alliance managed to escape. The alliance disbanded and each group went their separate ways. The Straw Hats split to retrieve their Shark Submerge III and the rest headed to the Thousand Sunny. The Fire Tank Pirates were inside Bege as he fled. Caesar left after he was given back his heart. Even after the crews separated, they still have a friendly relationship as Vito and Chiffon complained about not being able to say goodbye, followed by Chiffon’s willingness to risk her life for the Straw Hats. Bege later assisted Pudding’s plan by delivering a second wedding cake made by Chiffon, Pudding, Sanji, and the WCI 31 to calm Big Mom’s rampage. After being convinced by Sanji’s cooking, Bege forfeited his desire to poison or booby-trap the cake. When the group reunited with the crew on the Sunny, Sanji went back to his crew while the Fire Tanks took the cake and lured Big Mom and part of her crew away from chasing the Straw Hats, fulfilling Chiffon’s debt.

Locations Visited

While traveling, the Straw Hat Pirates have mostly just followed the route that their Log set out for them; the crew would travel from one island to another in order without backtracking or getting scattered by certain situations or forced to go off course—unless someone is taken away, the crew’s visiting the island delays their voyage (i.e., partying on Conomi Islands or the national celebration in Arabasta), or leaving the Grand Line. It is not until Water 7 that things begin to shift from this ‘formula’; the crew had to leave Water 7 to Enies Lobby to rescue Robin. Before Chapter 514, the Straw Hats had visited 20 islands in a straightforward pattern, with the entire crew together. In each saga, the Straw Hats have visited under 10 or so islands (with the exception of the Summit War Saga, in which they were split up): 7 islands in the East Blue Saga (excluding Dawn Island and Goat Island); 5 islands in the Arabasta Saga; 2 Islands in the Sky Island Saga; 3 islands in the Water 7 Saga; 17 islands in the Summit War Saga (including Merveille in Strong World);…

However, by Chapter 514, One Piece took a different twist, shattering their formulaic procession seen thus far; the entire Straw Hat crew was scattered, to 9 different islands (12 due to Luffy going to Impel Down, Marineford, and Rusukaina).

Since entering the Grand Line, no Straw Hat Pirate had left the Grand Line. However, after the events at Sabaody, Chopper was sent to the South Blue, Robin was sent to the East Blue, and the rest of the crew was scattered along the Grand Line, on different Log Pose routes and far enough apart that they could not reunite easily or by normal travel means (if traveling on the Grand Line could be called normal, that is). Most of the islands the crew visited were in one season and had one climate (i.e., spring or summer; perpetual snowing, canals, or being made of clouds) when examined in the order they were visited in, like Drum being snowy or Arabasta being sandy. Until now, the story has only used an island’s specific theme one time and moved on to introduce the next one; this is no more, since Nami was sent to the sky island Weatheria, Franky was sent to another Winter Island (despite having the mechanical theme of Karakuri from the seventh One Piece movie), and Luffy was sent to another jungle-themed island—Amazon Lily. After entering the New World from Fish-Man Island, the Straw Hats have only visited 1 island that the Log Pose has set out. They randomly discovered Punk Hazard, an island which cannot be logged, and upon forming an alliance with Trafalgar Law, they used his navigation to get to Dressrosa, and later a Vivre Card to reach Zou. The crew has also experienced two separations since entering the New World. The first occurred in Dressrosa, when the “Curly Hat Pirates” (Sanji, Nami, Chopper and Brook) left early for Zou (with Nami, Chopper and Brook never even setting foot on Dressrosa itself). The second occurred in Zou, when the “Sanji retrieval team” (Luffy, Nami, Chopper, Brook, along with the minks Pekoms, Pedro and Carrot) headed to Totto Land, leaving the rest of the crew to head to Wano. After Wano their Log Pose led them to Egghead. Currently, the crew has visited 36 locations.

Actions

Because the series focus on the Straw Hat Pirates, they were responsible for many actions throughout the 1000+ chapters of their adventures. These actions can be considered either a blessing or curse depending on whose point-of-view it is taken from. Though the Straw Hat Pirates are an inner-circle group and do not care about worldly affairs, they often become involved in many peoples’ wars, usually bigger than themselves, because they befriended the people involved. Most of these are people with a great amount of political power and authority behind them in some form. Their actions are often reported differently by the newspapers or the full details left unknown. All actions done by the Straw Hats were done by either one member or the entire crew.

East Blue Saga
  • Goat Island: Responsible for freeing Koby from Alvida.
  • Shells Town: Freed Shells Town by defeating Morgan, this was due to Luffy saving Zoro and Koby.
    • The first crew member, besides Luffy, joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the swordsman, Roronoa Zoro.
  • Organ Islands: Freed Orange Town by defeating the Buggy Pirates. This was done because Buggy was bothering Luffy, Zoro, and Nami.
    • The second crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the navigator, Nami.
  • Island of Rare Animals: Helped Gaimon realize for good that the treasure chests are empty.
  • Gecko Islands: Stopped Kuro’s plans of killing Kaya and inheriting her fortune. This was because they were doing Usopp a favor.
    • The third crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the sniper, Usopp.
    • They also gained their first ship, the Going Merry.
  • Baratie: Involved in defending the Baratie, Luffy only wanted to help Sanji and to free himself from being a Baratie chore boy by defeating Krieg.
    • The fourth crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the cook, Sanji.
  • Conomi Islands: Defeated the Arlong Pirates so they would have Nami back and ended up freeing Conomi Islands.
    • The Straw Hats also regained their navigator, who left them in the previous arc, and Luffy gained his first bounty thus granting the crew credence as a legitimate threat.
  • Loguetown: Escaped from the Marines in Loguetown with Dragon’s assistance.
Arabasta Saga
  • Reverse Mountain: Made a promise with Laboon.
  • Cactus Island: Zoro defeated 100 bounty hunters at Whisky Peak.
    • Saved Vivi and Karoo from the Mr. 5 team and ended up responsible for escorting Vivi to Arabasta.
  • Little Garden: Saved Dorry and Brogy from the Mr. 3 team after they befriended them.
  • Drum Island: Defeated Wapol and saved Drum Kingdom. This was because Nami was sick and needed a doctor.
    • The fifth crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the doctor, Tony Tony Chopper.
  • Arabasta: Saved Arabasta and defeated Crocodile. This was because Vivi was their friend and they decided to help her. This also caused the World Government (and the world itself) to fully take notice of the Straw Hats, with Luffy and Zoro receiving new bounties.
    • Vivi and Karoo left the crew, choosing to stay on Arabasta
    • The sixth crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the archaeologist and former second-in-command of Baroque Works, Nico Robin.
Sky Island Saga
  • Jaya: Defeated Bellamy because he attacked and stole gold from their friend Mont Blanc Cricket.
  • Skypiea: Were involved in stopping a 400-year-old war and defeated Enel. This was because they were searching for gold and Enel’s forces started direct conflict with them, such as Enel’s kidnapping of Nami.
    • Robin learnt about Poseidon from a Poneglyph, and the crew stole some treasure from the ruins.
Water 7 Saga
  • Long Ring Long Land: Defeated Foxy in the Davy Back Fight in order to avenge Shelly.
    • Fought Aokiji to stop him from hurting Robin, though were defeated. He, however, let the Straw Hats go.
  • Water 7: Were caught in a crossfire between CP9 and the Galley-La. Iceburg was shot by Robin and all Straw Hat Pirates (except Usopp) were to blame. Wanting to know why Robin had done this, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Chopper invaded the headquarters that was under attack by CP9 and saved Iceburg and Paulie.
    • Usopp and Nico Robin temporarily left the crew.
  • Enies Lobby: Raided Enies Lobby to save Robin and Franky, declared war on the World Government as a means to convince Robin to come back, and defeated CP9.
    • The destruction of Enies Lobby was Spandam’s fault (he triggered the Buster Call by mistake). As a result, CP9 became scapegoats, the blueprints were burned, which destroyed the World Government’s attempt to raise an ancient weapon to end the pirate age, and they needed Robin so they can get her to tell them where the Ancient Weapons were, but failed to retrieve her.
    • Nico Robin returns to the crew.
    • The Going Merry dies.
    • After Enies Lobby Incident: They encountered the legendary Marine and Luffy’s grandfather, Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp, as well as Koby and Helmeppo, and successfully escaped from them.
      • Usopp returns to the crew.
      • The seventh crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the shipwright, Franky the cyborg.
      • The crew gains a new ship, which they name the Thousand Sunny.
      • The entire crew also earned a new set of bounties for their actions at Enies Lobby.
Thriller Bark Saga
  • Thriller Bark: Defeated Gecko Moria and freed all the shadows he stole from numerous individuals (including some of their own). This was because an old man begged them to help while Luffy, Franky, Robin, Zoro and Sanji were originally searching for Usopp, Chopper and Nami.
    • The eighth crew member joined the Straw Hat Pirates, the musician, Brook.
One Piece Film Strong World
  • Merveille: Defeated Shiki and the Golden Lion Pirates in order to save and retrieve Nami from them, who wanted to use her in their plan to destroy East Blue.
Summit War Saga
  • Sabaody Archipelago: Saved Camie and Pappag from the Sea King, saved Hatchan, defeated the Macro Pirates and dealt with Duval. This was because they needed information on how to get to Fish-Man Island and Camie, who has the information, found out Hatchan was in trouble. Originally, they did not want to save Hatchan (a former officer of the Arlong Pirates) but changed their minds because Luffy wanted takoyaki and Nami had already promised Camie.
    • Attacked a World Noble, ended up freeing the slaves in the Auction House, and sent the entire island in a panic. As a result, Admiral Kizaru arrived and 500 pirates were captured. This was because they were trying to save Camie from being sold into slavery and Hatchan was shot by Charlos, which angered Luffy since he now considered Hatchan as a friend.
    • The crew was defeated and scattered by the Warlord, Bartholomew Kuma.
After Separation By Bartholomew Kuma
  • Amazon Lily: Managed to prevent Hancock from killing three of her warriors (Sweet Pea, Marguerite, and Aphelandra), and covering her sister Sandersonia’s back to prevent her slave mark from being exposed.
      • Wanting to save Ace from execution, Luffy convinced Hancock (who had fallen in love with him) to comply to the World Government’s demand she originally ignored to go to war against Whitebeard; by doing so, he prevented her from losing her Warlord title and the treaty to protect Amazon Lily that goes with it. This also saved Boa Hancock’s life.
    • After the War: Recovered and remembered the desire to reunite with his crew thanks to Jinbe, reunited with Rayleigh on Amazon Lily.
  • Impel Down: Invaded the complex, was defeated and captured, before escaping, thanks to Bentham.
    • Discovered Newkama Land and created a massive breakout that brought disgrace to Impel Down.
  • Marineford: Invaded Marineford and got involved in the Summit War of Marineford, had his heritage revealed, succeeded in releasing Ace but failed to save his life (or rather Ace saved him from being killed by Akainu), and falling into a mental collapse before being evacuated from the area.
    • After the War: Snuck into Marineford a second time and rang the Ox Bell 16 times. This was, however, a diversion to the real message: a temporary tattoo on his arm which informed his crew to meet up in two years, not three days as was originally planned. His actions during the war earned him a new bounty.
  • Rusukaina: Learned to control Haki in one and a half years. Became the “boss” of the island where he was training.
  • Kuraigana Island: He landed in Kuraigana Island, where he met up with Perona. After she tended his wounds, Perona and Zoro came to trust each other. Mihawk later returned to the island and gave Zoro a boat to leave the island after bringing the results of the war, but Zoro encountered the Humandrills. Upon finally defeating them, he returned to Mihawk and begged for an apprenticeship. Discerning that Zoro was throwing away his pride for the sake of someone else, he agreed to accept Zoro as a student.
  • Weatheria: She landed on Weatheria. After hearing about the Whitebeard War, she tried stealing the weather equipment after studying there for a while. She was caught and locked up, but was able to escape and take the stolen weather equipment and Haredas with her. After reading Luffy’s message, she convinced the scientists to forgive her and decides to learn from Haredas. Later, when informed of the unusual weather of the New World by Haredas, she told him that she must learn it all to be able to help Luffy in the future. She also inquired about the weather ball, which, if used improperly, could plunge the world into chaos.
  • Boin Archipelago: He had gotten fat by overeating the food he found on the island. After the news came out about the death of Ace, he had gotten brave. He even risked his own life to get off Boin Archipelago. After being saved a couple of times by his protector Heracles, he had to let him know that he wants to see Luffy through his pain. After receiving Luffy’s message, Usopp starts working out, deciding that he needs to lose weight, gain muscle, and grow stronger so that he did not have to stand around watching anymore, and to help Luffy out. He becomes Heracles’s apprentice, and begins learning about aspects of the forest, such as the Pop Greens, which are seeds of the hostile plants of the forest that have many uses. It was when Luffy decided to remain separated for two years that Usopp declared his newest ambition, to help Luffy become the Pirate King, he himself would become the true King of Snipers.
  • Momoiro Island: He landed on Momoiro Island, and was chased by the okama, and converted into one temporarily. He eventually returned to normal, and met with Ivankov, who refused to give him any information on Luffy due to Sanji having trouble giving evidence that he is a Straw Hat Pirate from the poorly drawn Wanted Poster. However, he did receive a newspaper on how Luffy was doing. Later, Sanji accepts a challenge to obtain the 99 recipes of Attack Cuisine by defeating the 99 Newkama Kenpo Masters while simultaneously trying to prevent himself from turning into a Okama. He succeeds and manages to get a ride back to Sabaody Archipelago afterwards.
  • Torino Kingdom: When he landed in Torino Kingdom, he fell in the war between the gigantic birds and natives. Chopper communicated in a way with the natives and birds and explained to the feathered beasts that the natives do not want to eat their eggs or steal their treasures, just the plants near their nests. Chopper bravely flew off to Sabaody. After receiving Luffy’s message, he returned back to Torino Kingdom, with the intent of growing stronger and developing new medicines by studying the plants there.
  • Tequila Wolf: She landed on Tequila Wolf, where she was forced to help build a bridge on the orders of the World Nobles since 700 years ago. She tried to escape from the handcuffs until she was eventually freed by the Revolutionaries.
  • Baltigo: After reading Luffy’s message agreed to be brought to Dragon in hopes of becoming stronger, which is the first time she thought of becoming stronger for others.
  • Karakuri Island: He landed on the future land Baldimore on Karakuri Island. After hearing about the Summit War, he broke into Dr. Vegapunk’s lab to find an icebreaker ship. While pursued by Marines, he pressed the self-destruct button in Dr. Vegapunk’s old home, which was known as a historical treasure. This event would later be known as the “Nightmare of Baldimore”. Franky got his skin blown off his face but managed to escape from the Marines. He ended up in a second secret laboratory which the entrance to was exposed by the explosion of the first and becomes interested in the schematics of various weapons and other advanced technology of Vegapunk. He decides to live there, and also dons a tiger rug to hide and disguise his hideous face. However, the rug caught on fire, and Franky ran outside just as the Marines had caught up to him, scaring them all with his flaming, bestial appearance. This incident would later be known as the “Legend of the Sacred Burning Beast of Baldimore”.
  • Namakura Island: He landed on Namakura Island during the middle of a devil-summoning ceremony. He wrote a song to raise the cultists’ spirits and helped them fight against and capture the Longarm Tribe. After releasing them, the Longarms kidnapped him since people would pay a lot of money to see a living skeleton.
  • Teena Geena Kingdom: He was held on display in the Teena Geena Kingdom, where he tried to adjust his leaning pose against the wall from 45 degrees to 40, but it failed. He decided he needed to try something else to grow stronger for Luffy, and released his new single, “Bone to be Wild”.

    • Later, having befriended the citizens of Fish-Man Island, Luffy declared war on Big Mom and her crew for ownership of Fish-Man Island.
    • Attempted to recruit Jinbe, who refused, saying that he has some business to take care of before he is able to join them.
Dressrosa Saga
  • Punk Hazard: After answering a distress signal, the Straw Hats land on Punk Hazard, an island which can’t be ‘logged’. There they learn of the mad scientist Caesar Clown, who not only conducted inhumane research on children and his own subordinates, but created chemical weapons of mass destruction, as well as making a vital chemical for an important product. The Straw Hat Pirates teamed up with the new Warlord, Trafalgar Law as well as Vice Admiral Smoker and his G-5 Marines, to defeat and capture the Caesar.
    • Made an alliance with Trafalgar Law in order to defeat the Emperor, Kaidou, as well as the samurai from Wano Country, Kin’emon, and his “son” Momonosuke.
    • With the destruction of the SAD factory, the Straw Hats learn of the second stage of the plan to challenge the emperor: blackmailing the man who supports Caesar, Donquixote Doflamingo, by holding the scientist for ransom.
  • Dressrosa: Upon arriving on the island with the intent of destroying the SMILE Factory which produces Artificial Devil Fruits for Kaidou, as accordance with their alliance with Law, things quickly go awry. Doflamingo counters their initial plans using unprecedented planning, influence and power, which caused some of the other Straw Hats, along with Momonosuke and Caesar, to flee to Zou with the Big Mom Pirates on their heels.
    • However, the Straw Hats on Dressrosa unintentionally made several new allies which included the local dwarf tribe, a rogue toy, members of the ex-Royal Family as well as a small cell of revolutionaries, with one of them revealing a personal connection to Luffy. Together, they unveiled Doflamingo’s evil conspiracy and destroyed the factory, making the Warlord desperate enough to attempt to destroy the country in order to hide his secrets.
    • Luffy defeats Doflamingo and saves Dressrosa. Unlike in Arabasta, the ordeal is not covered up by the World Government thanks to Fujitora. Because of Doflamingo’s defeat, all his customers and buyers receive negative impacts, with some of them directing their grudge on the Straw Hat-Heart Pirates Alliance.
    • Finally, seven individual groups who admire, or feel indebted to, the Straw Hats join in an alliance under Luffy, to form the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
Whole Cake Island Saga
  • Zou: The group that left for Zou before their captain is revealed to have saved the country from a pirate named Jack, an officer of the Beasts Pirates.
    • However, the Big Mom Pirates later arrived on Zou and abducted Sanji and Caesar.
    • Nearly two weeks later the rest of the crew arrived, reuniting Law with his crew and intent on finding the samurai’s last companion, the ninja Raizo. After learning the truth about their samurai friends, as well as their connection to the Mink Tribe, the pirates form an alliance with the warriors of Wano and Zou to defeat Kaidou, as well as the traitorous Shogun of Wano.
  • Totto Land: The Sanji Retrieval Team, accompanied by Pekoms, Pedro and Carrot, arrive at territory of the Emperor Big Mom. There, they intend to rescue Sanji from the political entanglements set into motion by a new alliance between Sanji’s family and the Charlotte Family.

Following a route she recommends, they eventually arrive at Big Mom’s base of operations, Whole Cake Island; there, they split into two teams, each with a separate mission: Brook and Pedro travel to Sweet City, in pursuit of Big Mom’s Road Poneglyph, while Luffy, Nami, Chopper and Carrot enter the mysterious Seducing Woods.
    • Eventually, everyone (including Sanji) converged in Big Mom’s residence, Whole Cake Chateau. They allied with the Fire Tank Pirates to assassinate Big Mom and save the Vinsmoke Family, who were deceived by Big Mom.
    • They succeeded in liberating the Vinsmokes but the assassination plan failed. However, the crews were saved when the Chateau collapsed, allowing them to escape.
    • They later joined forces with Pudding to make a secondary wedding cake to stop Big Mom’s rampage. While Luffy was engaged in battle against Katakuri in the Mirro-World, Sanji, Pudding, and Chiffon baked the cake, which lured Big Mom away from the Sanji Retrieval Team and Cacao Island, the Straw Hats designated rendezvous point.
    • After Luffy defeated Katakuri, he was saved by Sanji and Germa 66 before they made it back to the Sunny where they were pursued by the Big Mom Pirates’s fleet.
    • The ninth crew member, their helmsman Jinbe, also officially joined but had to stay behind to protect his former crew, the Sun Pirates, who along with Germa, offered to cover the Straw Hats escape.
  • Mirro-World: Taking Charlotte Brûlée as a hostage, the Straw Hats gain access to this realm and used it as a key element in there and the Fire tank Pirates assassination attempt against Big Mom. Later, Luffy duels Charlotte Katakuri in this realm, and barely wins.
  • Germa Kingdom: As the Sanji retrieval team make their way through Totto Land, Sanji himself returns to his home country, which has begun converging at Whole Cake Island in preparation for his wedding. The Big Mom Pirates later attempt to forcibly take over the kingdom, but the Vinsmoke’s later arrived and defeated the pirates, before having the kingdom assist the Straw Hats escape from Totto Land, in order to repay their debt.
Wano Country Saga
  • Wano Country: While the Sanji Retrieval Team journeyed to Totto Land, the rest of the crew went to Wano Country with the Heart Pirates and the Kouzuki Family retainers. There, they infiltrated the Flower Capital by creating aliases for themselves and taking various professions, as a way to gather information while waiting for their crewmates to arrive and the alliance to make their move. However, before all the Straw Hats could reunite, Luffy faced Kaidou in single battle and lost, getting himself imprisoned by the enemy.
    • Fortunately, those obstacles did not prevent the Straw Hats from continuing to recruit allies for the upcoming battle, including former daimyo Yasuie, yakuza bosses like Hyougoro, the prisoners of Udon’s Prisoner Mine and the remaining members of the Nine Red Scabbards and their subordinates.
    • On the night of the Fire Festival, the Straw Hats, together with their alliance and the Kid Pirates set sail to Onigashima, where the Beasts Pirates base resides, though Kurozumi Kanjuro, revealed himself a traitor and kidnapped Momonosuke.
    • On the way, Jinbe joined them, officially joining the Straw Hats as their helmsman.
    • The alliance infiltrated Kaidou’s castle, before launching an all-out war against the newly established Beasts and Big Mom Pirate alliance. During the battle, the Straw Hats freed Momonosuke and gained new allies in Kaidou’s son, Yamato, and the former Tobi Roppo, X Drake. They also gained allies in several thousand Beasts Pirates defectors, some thanks to Tama, a girl Luffy befriended, who had the Kibi Kibi no Mi ability.
    • The Straw Hat Pirates managed to beat the Beasts Pirates strongest officers, while Big Mom was defeated by the combination of Law and Kid.
    • Finally, after suffering three losses to Kaidou, Luffy managed to beat the Emperor during their fourth bout, which effectively freed Wano from pirates. The previous dictator, Kurozumi Orochi, was also killed during the raid, allowing Momonosuke to assume position of shogun.
    • As a result of this battle, Luffy was announced as one of the new Emperor’s, the other being Buggy.
Final Saga
  • Egghead: The Straw Hats land on Egghead, the base of the new Power that replaced the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the SSG. There, they encounter fellow Worst Generation pirate, Jewelry Bonney, as well as the enigmatic but brilliant Scientist, Dr. Vegapunk and his satellites.

Miscellaneous Information

Animal Resemblances

In an SBS question, a fan asked what animals would they best resemble. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats had 6 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other animals for the remaining crew members. Chapter 651’s color spread depicts each Straw Hat as an animal post-timeskip as well. Some of the crew’s animals are changed, but some stay the same.

In relation to an SBS question about a shirt Nami wore with the number 3 on it, Oda showed the specific numbers that he uses to represent the Straw Hats. The main numbers associated with the Straw Hats represent their order as a whole, starting with Luffy as 1 and following the sequence in which the others joined the crew. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 7 members. The numbers for Franky, Brook and Jinbe have been confirmed in later SBS. A chapter title pattern has also numbered the Straw Hats by the order in which they were recruited by Luffy, thus excluding Luffy himself.

The title of the chapter where a crewmate joins is the ordinal number one less than the personal number; for example, Zoro joins in Chapter 6, The First. However, not all Straw Hats have received a chapter title in his pattern when they first joined the crew. Nami and Usopp instead received their chapters upon reintegration into the crew, while Chopper, Robin and Jinbe have yet to receive such a chapter at all. Upon crew’s reunion at Sabaody Archipelago, their order of arrival was noted by Shakuyaku and briefly used by Zoro as a type of designation. Each of the crew Devil Fruit names can be associated with a pair of numbers using goroawase. The numbers 1 to 10 are represented, with the exception of 2 and 9. This has led to a reader asking Oda whether a 2-9 Devil Fruit user such as Bartholomew Kuma with his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi would join the crew; Oda dodged the question. In addition, other goroawase numbers are sometimes associated with the crew, such as those formed from their names.

Specific Colors

In an SBS question, a fan asked if each of the Straw Hats have specific colors. Oda replied and revealed the specific colors for each member. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 7 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other colors for the remaining crew members. In the 17th opening, all the Straw Hats wear clothes with color schemes appropriate of their color. In the One Piece’s 20th anniversary color spread, the Straw Hat Pirates are drawn in Germa 66 Raid Suit-like costumes under the name “Mugiwara 56”, in their respective colors. Brook’s color is listed as both white and black, but is often rendered as gray. In the anime, the colors were also used in most of the Straw Hats’ disguises as members of the Beasts Pirates during the raid on Onigashima, with Nami being the exception.

Specific Smells

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what the Straw Hats smelled like, since Chopper had such an amazing blue nose that allows him to identify his fellow crewmates. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 7 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other smells for the remaining crew members. All but Chopper’s smell were identified as Chopper cannot tell what he himself smells like.

Favorite Type Of Island And Season

In an SBS question, a fan asked which type of island each of the Straw Hats like among the different seasonal types of islands in the Grand Line. It was also asked which season of that island the Straw Hats like. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 7 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other islands and seasons for the remaining crew members.

Favorite Food

In an SBS question, a fan asked what each of the Straw Hats’ favorite foods were. Oda gave the following as a reply. It was later shown in Chapter 850, and confirmed in Chapter 854 that Sanji has a strong habit of making those food preferences, even without noticing. When asked about the bento in SBS Volume 86, Oda confirmed it and added Brook’s favorite food, curry. Jinbe’s favorite food was revealed in Vivre Card databook, and later in SBS Volume 99.

As A Family

In an SBS question, a fan asked if the Straw Hats were a family, what family member each one would be. When this question was first asked, Brook was not a member at the time. At a later SBS, Oda provided the answer to which family member would Brook be.

Genderswapped

In an SBS question, a fan asks what a genderswapped Straw Hat pirate crew would be like, looking at Emporio Ivankov’s powers. Oda replies with drawings and quotes for each genderswapped Straw Hat, all except for Brook who is just a skeleton and is unable to show any visible change. Genderswapped Jinbe was shown in a different SBS along with the other Seven Warlords of the Sea. [note: Except for Luffy (partly), Zoro, Sanji, and Jinbe, they all say their own catchphrases, but modified to be extremely feminine/masculine.]

Nationalities

In an SBS question, a fan asked what nationality the Straw Hats would be of if they were real. Based on their appearances, Oda gave the following as a reply: On the color Cover Page of Chapter 790, the Straw Hats are dressed up in the stereotypical national clothing of various countries, most being different from the SBS nationalities displayed above, with: Oda later reflected on his original answers in 2023 in an interview with Netflix: Q: A lot of fans have questions about the ethnicity of these characters and now that we’re seeing them being portrayed by real actors, what do you want to tell them about where these characters are from? A: “When I initially commented on the characters’ nationalities on SBS […], it was in a very light-hearted way. I didn’t imagine it would influence the production team so much. But as they started showing me candidates based on my SBS responses, they actually felt right. I realized there was truth in my light-hearted answers.”

Inner Brain

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what he and the Straw Hats’ inner brain looked like. As a reply, Oda wrote:

Suited Flower

In an SBS question, a fan asked Robin’s voice actress, Yuriko Yamaguchi, what flower would suit each of the Straw Hats. When Oda was asked about the Worst Generation, he gave different answers for Luffy and Zoro.

Blood Type

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what the Straw Hats’ blood types are. As a reply, Oda wrote:

Bathing

In an SBS question a fan asked Oda how often the Straw Hats bathe. As a reply, Oda wrote:

Nicknames From Trafalgar D Water Law

In an SBS question a fan asked Oda how Trafalgar D. Water Law calls each crew member.

Suited Prefecture

In an SBS question, a fan asked which prefecture of Japan would best represent each Straw Hat. Oda wrote:

Sea Of Origin

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda the order in which the members of the Straw Hat Pirates joined the crew. Oda replied, also giving information about the sea in which each one of the Straw Hats was born in. At a later SBS, Oda provided the information for Vivi.

Least Favorite Food

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what each crew member’s least favorite food was.

Typical Hours Of Sleep

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what each crew member’s sleep schedule looked like. Jinbe’s sleep schedule is revealed in his post-timeskip Vivre Card, and later in SBS Volume 99.

Suitable Career Choices

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what each crew member’s career of choice would be if they had not become pirates, and he provided a response to the question made by another fan, seeing as they were suitable enough.

Cooking Specialties

In a SBS question, a fan asked about each crew member’s strong points in terms of cooking.

Ice Crunching

In a SBS question, a fan asked about which crew members are ice-crunchers. Despite Zoro’s listing as a non-cruncher, he is seen eating ice in Chapter 701. Oda jokingly implied that this person was not Zoro, due the disguise he was wearing.

Who Would Win In A Race

In a SBS question, a fan asked who is the fastest in a 50 meters race. During the second One Piece Knowledge King quiz, it was revealed where Jinbe would place in the race.

Sanjis Secret Identity

In a SBS question, a fan asked what the Straw Hats would have named Sanji when he wore his Raid Suit.

Potential Devil Fruit

In an SBS question, a fan asked which Devil Fruits Oda would give to the Straw Hats without powers.

  • Roronoa Zoro: Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu (consumed by one of his swords)
  • Nami: Goro Goro no Mi
  • Usopp: Poke Poke no Mi
  • Sanji: Sui Sui no Mi (he personally wanted the Suke Suke no Mi)
  • Franky: Buki Buki no Mi
  • Jinbe: Any model of Tori Tori no Mi (compensate the loss of his swimming abilities with flight)
Fried Egg Preference

In a SBS question, a fan asked how each Straw Hat prefers their fried eggs cooked.

Favorite Food From Wano

In an SBS question, a fan asked Oda what each crew member’s favorite food from Wano Country was.

Alcohol Tolerance

In a SBS question, a fan asked Oda to rank the Straw Hats by their tolerance to alcohol. Oda stated that the ranking was difficult as “tolerance” is different from how much they like drinking.

Autographs

Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Robin, and Franky all have their own autographs, which they gave to Bartolomeo on his request. Usopp gave Chopper an autograph as his alter ego “Sogeking”, which Chopper now hangs in the Thousand Sunny infirmary. The remaining Straw Hat Pirates’ autographs were revealed in Volume 333.

Early Concepts

In One Piece Green: Secret Pieces, an early concept of the crew was revealed. No changes in particular are seen in Luffy, Zoro and Nami aside from a few small ones, such as Zoro carrying a bottle of sake on his waist, wearing a dark shirt rather than a white one, and Nami’s skirt being a little wavy rather than having straight cuts. However, it was later revealed in the tenth volume of One Piece Magazine that version published in Green had been edited to erase a tenth figure. This was the helmsman of the crew, an earlier version of Jinbe.

  • Sanji was supposed to have a somewhat thicker goatee from the beginning.
  • Usopp was supposed to be a vice captain/sniper that resembled his father more.
  • Chopper was supposed to be more of a “realistic-looking reindeer”.
  • Robin replaced a man that was supposed to be more of a plant lover than a history lover. His characteristic as a botanist is transferred to the post-timeskip Usopp.
  • Franky replaced the original carpenter of shorter stature.
  • Brook was also supposed to have a Cavalier hat like Yorki, instead of his trademark afro.

Translation And Dub Issues

The name of the Straw Hat Pirates has been romanized in two notable ways over the course of the series: “Mugiwara Pirates” (examples include chapters 357, 377, 756, and 872 covers, as well as Chapter 1089) and “Straw Hat Crew” (volume character introductions, volumes 60-86 and 108). However, to be consistent with other pirate crews, the wiki has translated the crew’s name as “Straw Hat Pirates”.

Trivia

  • When Luffy first left his village he mentioned that he would be satisfied with a pirate crew of about ten crew members.
  • The Straw Hats are the only known pirate crew where each current member has a bounty on their head.
  • The Straw Hats are the only known pirate crew where all members, under the captain, are classified as an officer.
  • In SBS Volume 51, Oda said that the Yojijukugo (a Japanese idiom spelled with four kanji) which would best represent the crew is “unprecedented in history” (前代未聞, Zendai-mimon?).
  • Each of the crew members have lost someone whom they loved:
    • Luffy lost his sworn older brothers, Sabo and Ace, until he learned Sabo was alive upon meeting him again.
    • Zoro lost his biological parents, Arashi and Tera, and later his rival and best friend, Kuina.
    • Nami lost her adoptive mother, Bell-mère.
    • Usopp lost his biological mother, Banchina.
    • Sanji lost his biological mother, Sora, and later his fellow chefs from the restaurant he worked at.
    • Vivi lost her biological parents, Titi and Cobra.
    • Chopper lost his first mentor and father figure, Hiriluk.
    • Robin lost her mother, Olvia, her civilization, and her friend who she thought to be dead, Saul.
    • Franky lost his mentor, Tom.
    • Brook lost his captain, Yorki and later his entire crew.
    • Jinbe lost his captain, brother, and friend Fisher Tiger and then lost his country’s queen, Otohime.
  • Members of the crew often have a chapter titled after the order they joined Luffy.
    • Usopp and Franky shared a chapter title when rejoining the crew.
    • Vivi, Chopper, Robin, and Jinbe are exceptions to that pattern.
  • In the anime since the Post-War Arc, Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Robin’s olive skin were all changed to light skin (in Robin’s case to very light skin, similar to Nami’s and Sanji’s) to match them as they are colored in the manga.
  • Zoro, Usopp, Sanji and Vivi are the only Straw Hats who have both of their parents named.
    • The four characters in question all have deceased mothers.
  • Brook and Jinbe are the only Straw Hats not shown with any form of family or parental figure.
  • Zoro is the only Straw Hat to be named after a real-life pirate.
  • Two of the Straw Hats are former captains: Brook was the captain of the Rumbar Pirates, and Jinbe was the captain of the Sun Pirates. They were both the crews’ second captains. The number ascends to three if Usopp’s Usopp Pirates are counted as a real crew.
  • Robin has the highest starting bounty of 79,000,000, but it was assigned to her before joining the crew.
    • Sanji has the highest starting bounty as a member of the Straw Hat Pirates with 77,000,000.
    • Jinbe has the highest bounty when joining the Straw Hats with 438,000,000.
    • Chopper has the lowest starting bounty with 50.
  • According to information revealed in the ninth booster pack of Vivre Card databook about the snow figures built by Luffy and Usopp in Chapter 106, it is possible to conclude that the Straw Hats crossed Reverse Mountain in mid-February.
    • Additionally, the Thousand Sunny is revealed to have been finished at March 25th, meaning about a month had passed between the Reverse Mountain Arc and the Post-Enies Lobby Arc.
  • Given the estimations that the time of their journey is about 3 to 6 months, the Straw Hat Pirates spent more time separated than together (about four times longer). Their time separated increases even more if their time together only counts when all current members are present at the same time.
  • In SBS Volume 99, Oda reveals that Usopp, Sanji, and Robin are the ones who provide haircuts to the other crewmembers.
  • Zoro, Sanji, and Jinbe, the three top fighters of the crew, share a theme of being ‘children’ of earth surfaces:
    • Zoro’s mother is named Tera, with Terra being the Latin word for earth.
    • Sanji’s mother is named Sora, with Sora being the Japanese name for sky.
    • Jinbe’s epithet is “First Son of the Sea”.
Cultural References
  • In the manga series Rurouni Kenshin, the Straw Hats’ flag design was used on a bomb to start a vengeance hit on one of the main characters of the series. Before writing One Piece, Oda worked as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of Rurouni Kenshin.
  • In the sixth volume of Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, the Straw Hats’ jolly roger appears on a painting of a ship at a party.
  • In the final chapter of the Naruto manga series, the author, Kishimoto, includes the Straw Hats’ Jolly Roger in the final scene as homage to One Piece. Conversely, Oda includes multiple references to Naruto on the cover of Chapter 766.
  • The crew was featured in Arashi’s music video of “A-ra-shi: Reborn” where they were rescued by the crew from a deserted island, and party with them before both groups preformed the song.
