Introduction
The Big Mom Pirates are an extremely infamous and powerful pirate crew led by their captain, Charlotte Linlin, better known as “Big Mom”, formerly one of the Four Emperors. They are in control of the powerful nation of Totto Land, with their captain ruling it as its queen and their base of operations being Whole Cake Island, the country’s main island. The captain agreed to an alliance with the Beasts Pirates for plans to take over the world. However, the captain was defeated during the Raid on Onigashima by Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law of the Worst Generation, and she was subsequently stripped of her position as an Emperor, leaving the crew’s status unknown. Due to their actions and role, they are minor antagonists during the Fish-Man Island Arc, Dressrosa Arc, and Zou Arc, and the main antagonists of the Whole Cake Island Arc and Whole Cake Island Saga as a whole. Jolly Roger
The Big Mom Pirates’ Jolly Roger is a skull with thick lips and wearing a pirate tricorne based on their captain’s appearance, on a fluffy background (which could represent Linlin’s hair in some fashion) with several candy canes crossed behind it (one on the right, three stacked together on the left), in place of normal crossbones. A tree is seen coming out of the cane on the bottom right. Like the Whitebeard Pirates, the Big Mom Pirates have a simpler Jolly Roger, consisting of the normal skull-and-crossbones, but retaining the large lips of the original.
Crew Members
Organization
The Big Mom Pirates are organized around a central group of pirates sailing directly under the former Emperor Big Mom, and various subordinate crews working directly on her orders, allowing the crew to operate as a massive pirate fleet. Specifically, the Big Mom Pirates are built heavily around the members of the Charlotte Family, with the children comprising a large portion of her crew as well as her officers and most capable fighters; however, it is unknown exactly how many of her children are direct members of her crew. Big Mom is seemingly addressed by all of her crew, family or not, as “Mama”. The crew’s hierarchy is similar to the Donquixote Pirates and Beasts Pirates, with there being a captain, several elite/executive officers, many regular officers, and a legion of lower-ranking grunts. In this case, Big Mom acts as the captain, with the Three Sweet Commanders working directly under her. In turn, other children of the Charlotte Family and combatants answer to them. The bulk of the crew is composed of tens of thousands of soldiers, from homies (especially the chess peacekeepers) to people of various humanoid races. Some of the family members have their own personal squads in the crew. The known family member’s squads revealed are Cracker’s, Smoothie’s, and Daifuku’s.
Main Crew
Three Sweet Commanders
A select few of Big Mom’s children stand out particularly in terms of power and have been designated the Three Sweet Commanders (スイート3将星, Suīto San Shōsei?, English versions: Sweet 3 Generals). They serve as Big Mom’s top officers with the highest authority, reverence, and fighting prowess in the crew after Big Mom herself. The trio currently consists of the 2nd son, Katakuri, the 14th daughter, Smoothie, and the 10th son, Cracker. Previously, they were known as the Four Sweet Commanders (スイート4将星, Suīto Yon Shōsei?, English versions: Sweet 4 Generals), with the 25th son, Snack, among their ranks until he was demoted following his two defeats by Urouge and Eustass Kid of the Worst Generation. The Commanders hold tremendous combat power.
Katakuri, for example, easily beat Vinsmoke Ichiji of Germa 66 while Cracker defeated Urouge of the Worst Generation (who had prior been able to defeat Snack). In fact, before his defeat by Monkey D. Luffy, Katakuri was stated to have never lost a battle or even been injured in some time while Cracker had rarely, if ever, been seen outside of his biscuit armor. Though Katakuri and Cracker did eventually suffer defeat at Luffy’s hands, they did not go down without grueling battles that each lasted over 10 hours. Overall, the Commanders’ might is well-reflected in their massive bounties, some of the highest known to date: 860,000,000 (Cracker), 932,000,000 (Smoothie), and 1,057,000,000 (Katakuri). Ex-Commander Snack has a 600,000,000 bounty. Ability-wise, each Commander (of the current three) has eaten and uses to great effect a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit: Further, all three Commanders are proficient in wielding bladed weaponry, with Cracker and Smoothie using swords and Katakuri a trident. Haki-wise, Cracker and Katakuri have demonstrated extremely potent Armament Haki, with Katakuri further able to see the future using incredibly refined Observation Haki and having Supreme King Haki like his mother. Due to the Sweet Commanders’ significant status among the crew, the defeat of one is considered a grave event and will have the Big Mom Pirates seeking to use overwhelming force to bring down whoever responsible. Cracker’s defeat saw a state of emergency lockdown be declared on Whole Cake Island.
- Katakuri has eaten the Mochi Mochi no Mi, which allows him to create, control, and even transform his body (akin to a Logia) into mochi. Having further achieved Devil Fruit awakening, he can transform inorganic matter around him into additional, vast amounts of mochi to control.
- Smoothie has the powers of the Shibo Shibo no Mi, which allow her to wring both living and nonliving things as if they were wet cloth and “squeeze the juice out of them”, leaving them severely dehydrated. The liquid she drains in the process can be taken into her own body so as to drastically increase her size and strength. Once her body is full of liquid, she can unleash it as high-pressure blasts that boast an incredible attack range.
- Cracker, with the powers of the Bisu Bisu no Mi, can create and control biscuits. He can use his biscuits to construct a countless number of puppet soldiers that are extremely strong, near unbreakable, and can grow extra limbs.
Officers
Excluding the Three Sweet Commanders, 74 out of Big Mom’s 85 children are confirmed officers of the Big Mom Pirates and considered among the elite of Big Mom’s army. Four of them—Perospero, Compote, Daifuku, and Oven—are noted by Vito to be “monsters” on nearly the same level as the Sweet Commanders. Perospero, the first son who has a 700,000,000 bounty on his head, effortlessly defeated both Chopper and Brook and would have killed them with his candy powers if not for Pedro’s sacrifice. Oven, the fourth son, briefly incapacitated the entire Sun Pirates crew with a single one of his heat attacks and Daifuku, the third son, is capable of wreaking large-scale destruction using his genie powers. While the rest of the children are not on the same level as those four, they are powerful fighters in their own right. Mont-d’Or, Opera, and Galette defeated Luffy and Nami, though both were worn out from their fight with Cracker, and Luffy, in particular, was exhausted after a vicious beating from Sanji. A number of the officers have Devil Fruit powers, including Mont-d’Or’s Buku Buku no Mi, Opera’s Kuri Kuri no Mi, Galette’s Bata Bata no Mi, Charlotte Brûlée’s Mira Mira no Mi, Charlotte Pudding’s Memo Memo no Mi, and Charlotte Newshi’s Gocha Gocha no Mi. Older children seem to have some level of authority over their younger siblings. A notable example of this is when the eldest son Perospero was seen giving orders to his Sweet Commander younger siblings who are supposed to outrank him.
Combatants
Combatants are members of the crew that specialize in fighting and seem to be the ones sent out on missions away from Totto Land. If combatants prove themselves to be trustworthy, they are assigned a rank. No family members, with the technical exception of Capone Bege, have an appointed rank, which may indicate that the ranking system is designed specifically for crew members that are not related to Big Mom by blood. The rankings follow the pieces of a chess game. They include:
- The Rooks, such as Capone Bege, who was in charge of security during events such as Tea Parties.
- The Knights, such as Tamago.
- The Bishops, such as Bobbin.
- Pekoms is also a combatant and is referred to as “Sir Pekoms,” but whether this correlates to having a rank or not remains unknown.
Homies And Soldiers
Big Mom uses her Devil Fruit, the Soru Soru no Mi, to create an army of obedient soldiers called “Homies”. These homies can be separated into three groups: the Special Homies, which are born out of Big Mom’s soul and consist of Zeus, Prometheus, and Napoleon; the Fighting Homies, which consist of the chess soldiers (Chess Peace Keepers in the Funimation Dub), the biscuit soldiers, and the tarte tanks; and the Decorative Homies, which consist of the many trees, cakes, flowers, chairs, foods, and other objects that have been granted life by Big Mom. Serving alongside homies are thousands of naturally living people serve as soldiers in Big Mom’s army. Despite being the weakest and lowest-ranking members in the crew, they have a great degree of diversity, and consist of humans, minks, dwarves, and possibly fish-men as well. Some of these soldiers have their own personal aesthetics, with one squad consisting of a large man with a Snow White outfit leading a group of bearded dwarf-like people.
Allies And Subordinates
The Big Mom Pirates have various subordinate crews, some of which were already famed pirate groups in their own right. For a crew to sail under Big Mom, new enlistees must have their bloodlines tied to her family (consisting of Linlin herself, 43 husbands, 39 daughters and 46 sons); this requires a political wedding. They also appear to carry out a traditional sakazuki ceremony. The crew’s recruitment process is that Linlin would marry off her children, mostly without taking their own interest into consideration, with the goal of bolstering her pirate group. These formerly included the Sun Pirates, captained by a former Warlord of the Sea, Jinbe, and the Fire Tank Pirates, captained by one of the Worst Generation, Capone Bege. Per Big Mom’s requirements, the vice-captain of the Sun Pirates married her 21st daughter, while the captain of the Fire Tank Pirates himself married her 22nd daughter. In the event that a bride or groom from an outside family has multiple existing affiliations, they must sever those that are external to the political agreement with Big Mom. This was the case with Sanji, whose membership of the Straw Hat Pirates was a loyalty outside the arrangement agreed between the Vinsmoke Family patriarch and the Charlotte Family matriarch, and which was therefore required to be forfeited.
Territories
Aside from Totto Land, which is Big Mom’s central kingdom, all territories under the Big Mom Pirates’ protection must pay a monthly fee of ten tons of confections. The Big Mom Pirates are known to have or have had the following territories under their protection: In Totto Land’s sea, territorial sea slugs send out automatic Den Den Mushi warning signals for nearby ships to warn them about the danger of having entered Big Mom’s immediate territory. Unauthorized entry is not tolerated, and intruders would be shot down.
- Totto Land (an archipelago composed of 35 islands under the rule of Big Mom and her crew)
Former
Failure to pay the monthly confections fee is inexcusable, nor will any grace periods be given, and being unable to deliver will result in the pact be voided, and Big Mom will send her army of monsters to destroy said territory. Normally, Linlin would not accept any compensation (such as treasure), but she made a sole exception for Fish-Man Island when Monkey D. Luffy challenged her for the island’s protection, out of sheer amusement at the young pirate’s defiance.
- Fish-Man Island (Sided with the Straw Hat Pirates)*
- A country famous for baked confections (Burned Down)*
Crew Strength
Captained by an Emperor, the Big Mom Pirates were recognized as one of the four most powerful pirate crews in the world. Several members shown have been proven to be formidable fighters, able to battle and take down notable, infamous rookie pirates such as Caribou and some members of the Worst Generation. Due to Big Mom being able to place souls into animals and inanimate objects, she has innumerable legions of warriors known as “Homies” that can overwhelm even strong opponents, especially within Totto Land. The Sun Pirates, a powerful crew of fish-men, were frightened at the possibility falling out of favor with Big Mom and fled when their captain officially severed ties with her. According to Skull, the pirate-obsessed nerd in One Piece novel A, Big Mom is considered to have the “strongest family in the world”.
Furthermore, Linlin has many islands under her control besides the archipelago of Totto Land, and the citizenry of Fish-Man Island, fearing her wrath, agreed to produce the ten tons of candy she orders every month. Furthermore, Linlin has many islands under her control besides the archipelago of Totto Land, and the citizenry of Fish-Man Island, fearing her wrath, agreed to produce the ten tons of candy she orders every month. It is common knowledge to everyone in the New World that Big Mom’s “invitation” to her tea parties is in name only, and that it is an absolute summons order. It is said that even demons from hell will attend the party when invited by Big Mom. Refusal would result in the invitee being sent a box containing the head of someone close to them, even if that person is someone of notable strength or in another part of the sea beyond the Calm Belts and Red Line, demonstrating just how far-reaching the crew’s power is. As a former Emperor, Big Mom partners with several crews and groups through political marriages to increase her crew’s military strength, such as the Fire Tank Pirates and Sun Pirates, although both of those crews went on to betray her.
The crew is also well-connected with Underworld activities, especially through its involvement in brokering, as Big Mom would appear affluent enough to commission the likes of Caesar Clown into conducting clandestine research on her behalf with proper funding. Pekoms and Tamago were also seen paying attention to Caesar Clown’s broadcast of an illegal chemical weapon of mass destruction. Big Mom also attempted to form an alliance with the notorious Vinsmoke Family to get the technology of Germa 66, but after failing to assassinate the family the two groups became enemies. Even without Big Mom in the equation, the rest of the crew carries enough power and influence to do a wide range of activities. Big Mom fully entrusted some of her subordinates to massacre entire islands just to steal cake ingredients, and the members of her crew are very confident in their ability to dispose of enemies without Big Mom having to get involved at all.
Four powerful pirate crews belonging to the Worst Generation invaded Big Mom’s territory, with three of them forced to flee and the Fire Tank Pirates becoming subservient; of those crews, only the Fallen Monk Pirates actually managed to make any impact in their invasion, and all of them were quickly dispatched before they could hear from or lay eyes on Big Mom herself. Charlotte Brûlée compared the vast difference in power to hitting a brick wall, saying that challenging them would only cause the challenger to fall into despair. The fact that many of Big Mom’s subordinates are frightened of her despite having great power of their own indicates that the full strength of the crew is well beyond what most other pirates can reach or even fathom. The military might of the crew is immense, consisting of tens of thousands of homies and soldiers. A mere fraction of Big Mom’s forces was able to overpower a fatigued Monkey D.
Luffy, although not without suffering heavy casualties, including the destruction of most of the Chess Peacekeepers. When Big Mom joined her crew in battling Luffy, Sanji, Capone Bege, and the entire Vinsmoke Family, they won easily with no casualties. Another testament to the size of the crew is when the Germa 66 defeated Charlotte Nusstorte and his 10,000-strong army, the rest of the crew was unfazed by the enormous loss, not even noticing it. When Linlin personally arrived at Wano along with some of her strongest children, Kaidou mentioned that it could escalate into an all-out war with his own crew. The sheer number of ships in the crew’s possession gives them considerable naval superiority over most pirate crews; even though some were sunk by Eustass Kid, and Daifuku himself destroyed many Tartes when trying to kill Carrot, these losses did not seem to impact the crew in any noticeable way.
Each island in Totto Land has its own Tarte, but there seem to be many more in reserve, and a single fleet of these ships is enough to completely besiege an enemy vessel. The crew, particularly the officers who command fleets, have proven capable of effectively coordinating their ships’ movements. With their Territorial Sea Slugs making it impossible for any ship to sail through Totto Land undetected, the crew’s fleet makes it difficult, if not impossible, to invade Totto Land and especially Whole Cake Island, as well as escape. The Straw Hat Pirates were only able to easily make it to Whole Cake Island because Big Mom was luring them into a trap there, and Urouge managed to escape after being presumed deceased. The crew also manufactures special equipment and weaponry that they use to deal with unusual enemies such as special tights worn by Tamago that protect him from electric attacks such as Pedro’s Electro or the Walker guns and Candy Jacket Bullets designed to pierce the armored exoskeletons of the Vinsmoke children.
It was said that if an island does not pay its tribute, Big Mom will destroy it using her army of “monsters”. Since Big Mom has turned Totto Land into a place for all races to live in harmony, and had kids with multiple races, her crew is extremely diverse and has been shown to feature almost every race, even rare ones such as the Three-Eye Tribe, and the various abilities boasted by these races. The most notable exception is that there are no giants in the crew because of Big Mom’s enmity with them, although she herself possesses equivalent size and strength and intends to make her family just as large. Like many elite New World pirate crews, the Big Mom Pirates have far more Devil Fruit users in their crew than is typically seen in less perilous seas. Most of them (such as Charlotte Cracker, Perospero, Mont-d’Or, and Big Mom herself) are shown to have very powerful or useful abilities and are highly skilled and creative in their usage.
As a result, attempting to engage her crew (especially several members at once or deep in their territory) can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous for the unprepared. The higher-ranking members of the crew are also extremely proficient with Haki, as Big Mom possesses Supreme King Haki, and of the Sweet Commanders, Cracker has extremely tough Armament Haki while Charlotte Katakuri has Observation Haki so advanced, it allows him to see a little bit into the future. According to Vito during Big Mom’s tea party, there are several members of the crew that he considers to be “monsters” besides Sweet Commanders Katakuri and Smoothie, which includes several of her eldest children: Charlotte Perospero, Charlotte Compote, Charlotte Daifuku and Charlotte Oven. Despite their enormous manpower and reputation, the Big Mom Pirates are not invincible, which the Straw Hat Pirates and their allies ultimately managed to prove. Although the Big Mom Pirates were usually at the advantage in their conflict and the Straw Hats were forced to flee, they were successful in taking out legions of Big Mom’s troops and destroying several of their ships. In particular, Luffy managed to defeat two of their Sweet Commanders, and three crews allied with them (the Fire Tank Pirates, Sun Pirates, and Germa 66) turned against them and contributed to their losses. While the overall significance of the Big Mom Pirates’ losses in this instance is unknown because of how immeasurable their numbers are, their reputation was still greatly tarnished by Morgans in the World Economic Journal due to the Straw Hats’ actions. Also, Big Mom herself is by far the crew’s biggest fighting asset, with Perospero believing that her death would spell doom for the rest of them. However, her mental instability due to her food craving disorder can sometimes make her a danger to the crew as well, as no one else in the crew has shown the ability to physically stop or subdue her. When Big Mom got a craving for wedding cake, Perospero knew that she would destroy the entire crew in addition to everyone on Totto Land unless the cake was made. The massive number of Devil Fruit users in the crew can also be a large weakness to the crew when they go out to sea, as when they attempted to go against the Beasts Pirates and navigate the perilous waters around Wano Country, a single attack from King immediately put them in danger. Upon both Big Mom and Kaidou being defeated by the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance, the crew lost most of its power as well as their status as an Emperor’s crew.
Ships
Totto Land Grand Fleet
The Totto Land Grand Fleet is a massive fleet of thousands of ships captained by the Big Mom Pirates. The most prominent ship in the fleet is the Queen Mama Chanter, while members of the Charlotte Family have been seen commanding large battleships bearing their names on the sails. The bulk of the fleet consists of Tartes and paddle ships.
Subordinate Crews Ships
Nostra Castello
The Nostra Castello is the ship of the Fire Tank Pirates, who during the timeskip allied themselves with the crew. As a result, the Nostra Castello became part of the Big Mom Pirates. After the events of Pudding and Sanji’s wedding, where Bege attempted to assassinate Big Mom, the Fire Tank Pirates and their ship are no longer affiliated with the crew. The ship has the ability to traverse on land as well due to its retractable treads, a feature that Bege did not reveal to the Big Mom Pirates due to his intention of betraying them to begin with.

History
Past
62 years ago, Big Mom began her pirating career at the age of six after unknowingly causing the disappearance of her foster family. Streusen witnessed the incident and decided to befriend her and managed to influence her. They eventually went out to sea to create Linlin’s dream utopia, and Linlin created her main weapons Zeus and Prometheus to attack villages. Linlin received her first bounty of 50,000,000 and as she grew more powerful and fearsome, her bounty raised to 500,000,000. Over 40 years ago Linlin herself joined the Rocks Pirates, but eventually left when the captain died in the God Valley Incident, and then at least 33 years ago either starting or continuing with the Big Mom Pirates.
Over the course of 42 years, Big Mom gave birth to 85 children from 43 husbands. While she would discard all her husbands, many of her children would become members of the Big Mom Pirates, and she would marry them off to other crews and organizations to form a blood-bond between them, automatically recruiting them into her army. With a network of powerful pirate crews and her children as the backbone of the very central crew, Linlin would eventually earn her moniker as “Big Mom” and become one of the Four Emperors. She never allowed anyone to leave her crew alive, instead of presenting what she deems as a fair compromise to those who wished to but rigging it to ensure the defectors and the associated organization would lose their lives. At some point, Big Mom commissioned the rogue scientist Caesar Clown to research artificial gigantification, that she may satisfy her long-held dream to have a Tea Party with her children at eye-level.
Caesar’s efforts were able to accelerate and extend the growth of children, but with long-term health issues. Knowing that permanent artificial growth was impossible, Caesar took the money anyway to finance a lifestyle of excess. Three years before the start of the series, the Big Mom Pirates overwhelmingly defeated the trespassing Nox Pirates, and Pekoms defected from the latter to the former. While Big Mom killed Zepo of the Nox Pirates, she had mercy on the captain, Pedro, and gave him a few more years to live by not taking all of his remaining lifespan. At some point, Big Mom and Vinsmoke Judge arranged a political alliance between the Charlotte and Vinsmoke families. Per Big Mom’s policy, the alliance was to be sealed with a wedding between the third Vinsmoke son, Sanji, and the 35th Charlotte daughter, Pudding, during a future Tea Party. However, Big Mom’s true plan was to massacre the Vinsmokes during the wedding in order to gain full control over their kingdom’s advanced technology. The wedding has been continuously delayed due to the Vinsmoke Family being unable to locate Sanji who has been living under a low profile in Baratie.
During The Timeskip
Sometime after the Summit War of Marineford, Big Mom’s crew agreed to protect Fish-Man Island in exchange for ten tons of sweets a month. Around this time, the remnants of the Sun Pirates, including Jinbe, would come to work under Big Mom, although she primarily let them do as they pleased. Also, during the time-skip, Eustass Kid, Scratchmen Apoo, Capone Bege, and Urouge attempted to invade Big Mom’s territory. Other than the Fire Tank Pirates, who allied themselves with Big Mom, the crews of Kid, Apoo, and Urouge were forced out of Big Mom’s territory. Prior to that, Kid had attacked Charlotte Snack, one of the former Four Sweet Commanders and made off with his Road Ponelglyph rubbings. Urouge managed to defeat Snack as well, though he was later defeated by Charlotte Cracker. Sometime before the Straw Hat Pirates arrived to Fish-Man Island, Kid sank two of Big Mom’s allies’ ships.
Fishman Island Saga
Fishman Island Arc
After Fish-Man Island was nearly destroyed by the New Fish-Man Pirates’ coup d’état, Tamago and Pekoms arrived to collect the candy payment while disregarding the civil war. Meanwhile, Bobbin had finished attacking another of their territories due to the failure of delivering Big Mom her candy payment. Back at Fish-Man Island, when Tamago and Pekoms found out about the situation, they reported it to Bobbin, who told Big Mom, who in turn phoned Fish-Man Island. Monkey D. Luffy answered and took responsibility for the lost candy right before declaring war against Big Mom, stating that it was dangerous to leave the island under the control of someone who would destroy it just for candy. Pekoms later defeated Caribou with a single punch after he tried to retrieve the treasure Luffy had given them as compensation for the candy.
Dressrosa Saga
Punk Hazard Arc
Pekoms and Tamago later watched Caesar’s Den Den Mushi broadcast on his chemical weapon of mass destruction. After seeing Caesar’s defeat by Luffy, Tamago suggested they call Big Mom, in part so that they could collect Caesar and inquire into his research.
Dressrosa Arc
The crew approached Dressrosa on their ship, with the intent of capturing Caesar and sinking the Straw Hats. However, the Sunny Protection Team launched a successful counterattack, creating a large explosion and escaping through fog. Sometime during their pursuit of Caesar, the Big Mom Pirates received additional orders to retrieve Sanji unharmed, in order to bring him to the tea party as a pawn in Big Mom’s Vinsmoke assassination plans.
Whole Cake Island Saga
Zou Arc
After the Curly Hat Pirates arrived on Zou, the Big Mom Pirates managed to follow their trail due to overhearing their destination. They were able to locate and reach Zou due to having a native on board, and they arrived seven days later, with Pekoms and Bege going ashore. Bege and Pekoms reached Zou, and Pekoms became enraged when he saw his homeland destroyed. He reunited with his tribesmen, and Sanji made contact with Bege in order to settle their dispute over Caesar’s captivity. Pekoms thanked Sanji for saving the minks and offered to fail a second, undisclosed mission (later revealed to be the retrieval of Sanji) if Sanji handed over Caesar.
Angered that Pekoms was disregarding their complete orders, Bege shot him in the back. The Fire Tank Pirates then came out of his body and surrounded Sanji and Brook, with Nami and Tony Tony Chopper being captured by Vito. Bege took the Straw Hats inside his castle body, where he revealed to Sanji that he had been arranged to marry Pudding at Big Mom’s Tea Party. Sanji refused, but Bege did not give him a choice as Vito revealed a secret about him that they knew. Sanji agreed to come along if he could write a note to his crew. As Sanji talked with his captured crewmates, he suddenly threw them out of Bege’s body and held Caesar at gunpoint in order to keep the Fire Tank Pirates from harming his friends. Bege was then confronted by Nekomamushi, who wanted to know what happened to Pekoms. In a bad situation, Bege escaped from Zou with Sanji and Caesar inside him, leaving Pekoms behind. Two days later, a recovering Pekoms met the Straw Hats that had just arrived and told them more about the Vinsmoke Family and the arranged marriage. He intended to return once his injuries had healed, and Luffy ordered him to take him to Big Mom’s tea party. En route to Whole Cake Island, Tamago attempted to persuade Sanji to join Big Mom’s crew, by informing him that Big Mom was impressed by his skill set and would likely offer him a good position in the crew. Sanji refused, countering that he will not cook for people with no respect for their own crew members.
Whole Cake Island Arc
Pekoms guided the Sanji Retrieval Team through Totto Land, claiming to guards that he had hijacked the Thousand Sunny. However, he was kidnapped by the Fire Tank Pirates on Cacao Island. Meanwhile on Whole Cake Island, Big Mom prepared for the wedding to be held in three days’ time. She had Randolph, Amande, and Diesel gather mythical ingredients for the wedding cake on faraway islands by killing the people guarding them. Later that day, Big Mom developed a craving for croquembouche and went on a rampage in Sweet City, causing her crewmates and the citizens to panic.
She ate everything and killed everyone in her path, including her son Charlotte Moscato. However, Jinbe arrived and gave her croquembouche, and then asked the clear-minded Big Mom if he could leave her crew. Big Mom seemingly agreed but said Jinbe would have to lose something in return as she pulled out a roulette wheel with pictures of body parts on it. It was later reported that Jinbe backed out of the deal. Meanwhile, in the Seducing Woods, Randolph and Charlotte Brûlée, who were ordered by Big Mom to deal with the Sanji Retrieval Team, showed up to attack them.
While Brûlée was dealing with Luffy by taking his appearance thanks to her powers and imitating all his moves, Randolph started to chase Nami, Carrot, and Chopper on his crane. Carrot started fighting with him, but they finally ran back to Luffy to leave the Seducing Woods together. However, Luffy turned out to be Brûlée in disguise, and Brûlée and the homies managed to scatter the Straw Hats and defeat Chopper and Carrot. Later that day, Big Mom brought Caesar Clown before her to inquire about his gigantification research. Caesar replied that the Straw Hat and Heart Pirates had destroyed his research, and Big Mom revealed that she had her son Charlotte Perospero construct a replica laboratory on Whole Cake Island.
She gave Caesar two weeks to finish the impossible research, or else Perospero would turn him into candy. On the northeastern coast of Whole Cake Island, the Fire Tank Pirates shot the captured Pekoms into shark-infested waters in order to eliminate him. However, Pekoms managed to survive due to Jinbe spotting him. Back in the Seducing Woods, Sweet Commander Cracker confronted Nami and Luffy while Pound was giving information about Big Mom to them. Cracker was about to execute Pound, but Luffy stopped him and initiated a fight with him while Brûlée and her minions went after Nami.
After an initial struggle, Luffy managed to land a hit on Cracker using Kong Gun. Nami also managed to defeat Brûlée using Thunderbolt Tempo. Luffy apparently split Cracker’s body in half, but the real Cracker appeared from what was revealed to be a Biscuit Soldier, which he could manipulate with his Devil Fruit powers. They fought for 11 hours, until a fat Luffy activated his Tankman mode and finished Cracker off by absorbing him and launching him far away. After two of the Sweet Commanders gathered at Big Mom’s castle and Big Mom went to meet the Vinsmoke Family, Cracker crashed into a large building in Sweet City.
His siblings were shocked at his defeat and put Whole Cake Island in a state of alert. Eventually, they formed an army of which included several of their strongest and most notorious members from their crew while Zeus and Prometheus created a massive storm. The army then marched on towards Luffy to avenge Cracker. Nami advised Luffy to run, saying he could not defeat an army of that size in his current state, but Luffy, determined to wait for Sanji, refused to move and prepared to fight. During the battle, Amande sliced Kingbaum for supporting Luffy and Nami.
Even though Luffy defeated most of the army, the higher-ranked members eventually overwhelmed him with their abilities. Luffy and Nami were then captured, and the Big Mom Pirates took the Vivre Card that Lola had given to Nami. The army then returned to Sweet City with the captured Straw Hats. Meanwhile at the Room of Treasure, Tamago increased security and guarded the three Poneglyphs in Big Mom’s possession alongside Sweet Commander Charlotte Smoothie. Big Mom also had a conversation with Sanji, who requested her to allow his friends to leave Whole Cake Island in exchange for not running away.
Big Mom then stated that as long Sanji complied with the wedding, she would be willing to overlook Luffy’s transgression against her. Soon after, Brook managed to infiltrate the Room of Treasure and lock Smoothie out while Pedro attacked the Chess Soldiers in the hallways, forcing Tamago to go after him. Upon hearing about the intrusion, Big Mom broke into the Room of Treasure and confronted him herself, while Tamago cornered Pedro in the third-floor courtyard. The two of them dueled, with Pedro managing to horizontally bisect Tamago. While this occurred, some members of the Big Mom Pirates, like Randolph and Diesel, gathered at Brûlée’s house in order to cook Carrot into stew and eat her.
However, Carrot and Chopper managed to devise a ruse, and they unleashed a surprise ambush on the houseguests. After everyone else was defeated by a few strong attacks, Diesel ran to report this to Big Mom, but Carrot caught and defeated him. She and Chopper then forced Diesel to transport them through the Mirro-World. Big Mom managed to easily overwhelm Brook in the Room of Treasure, and in the Prisoner Library, Charlotte Opera received orders from her to find out Lola’s location from Nami, threatening to torture Nami should she not comply. However, Jinbe then entered the Prisoner Library despite not being allowed in the Whole Cake Chateau, and when Opera turned his attention to him, he hit Opera in the stomach with a powerful Gosenmaigawara Seiken, knocking him out.
Jinbe then freed Luffy, Nami, and many other prisoners by burning the book they were in, and a massive horde of Big Mom Pirates rushed into the library in response to the disturbance. Luffy raced into the horde and started choking Charlotte Counter in order to find out Sanji’s location; he then fought through everyone in his path in order to reach Sanji. Meanwhile, Smoothie plotted to seal off the uprising in the third floor and deal with it herself, not wanting Big Mom to learn about more troubles. Big Mom defeated and captured Brook but kept him around due to being mesmerized by him. In the third-floor courtyard, Tamago evolved into new forms with his Devil Fruit power that gave him more and more chicken features, but as he prepared to evolve into Count Niwatori, Pedro blew up a large collection of explosives in his jacket, causing a massive explosion.
However, Niwatori survived and joined a meeting with several of the Big Mom Pirates, where they went over the statuses of the Sanji Retrieval Team and the Vinsmoke Family. However, Opera lied that he had killed Luffy and Nami and denied any knowledge of Jinbe’s rumored presence in order to save face and avoid punishment. With everyone seemingly accounted for, the meeting adjourned, though Charlotte Mont-d’Or secretly had the Chess Soldiers keep watch over the Chateau out of mistrust for Opera. Meanwhile, Jinbe and Nami raced through the Chateau, taking out any soldiers they ran into before they were pulled into a mirror by Chopper and Carrot. In another hallway, Bobbin approached Sanji and pulled out a piece of meat Sanji had made for Luffy.
Without thinking, Sanji kicked Bobbin into the wall to get the meat back. Right after Sanji fled the scene, Bobbin recovered and went to deal with Sanji himself, putting his nearby crewmates to sleep. Meanwhile, Big Mom went to sleep and had Brook stolen from her after the Sanji Retrieval Team staged a covert mission to retrieve him. Brook then revealed that he had acquired copies of Big Mom’s Poneglyphs, much to Brûlée and Diesel’s shock. As he went outside to pursue Sanji, Bobbin was shot by Vito and collapsed.
When the Sanji Retrieval Team was finally reunited, Jinbe initiated an alliance with the Fire Tank Pirates so they could take down Big Mom. After a meeting, the alliance was set in stone. Bege revealed his plan, in which they would shatter a portrait of Mother Carmel at the wedding, which would put Big Mom in a mental crisis and render her vulnerable enough to be injured, where they would shoot her with some poison weapons that Caesar Clown, whom Bege had rescued from captivity, developed. Brûlée and Caesar would facilitate their escape with a mirror. Bege and his crew were responsible for the security at the wedding, so Bege could sneak everyone into the wedding inside his body.
Meanwhile, the Sun Pirates left Whole Cake Island to flee from Big Mom, leaving a tied up Pekoms behind. Head chef Streusen put the finishing touches on the wedding cake, and a few hours later the Tea Party was in full swing as Big Mom’s guests, the emperors of the Underworld, arrived. Big Mom received gifts from her guests and planned to open them along with the Tamatebako after the wedding. Having completed his security duties outside, Bege entered the venue with his allies inside of him. The wedding ceremony then began, and Pudding and Sanji were flown up to the altar.
However, Pudding was rendered unable to shoot Sanji after he complimented her third eye, causing the Big Mom Pirates’ plan to go awry. Big Mom tried to get the priest to shoot Sanji, but Charlotte Katakuri, foreseeing with his advanced Observation Haki that the shot would miss, attempted to snipe at Sanji himself. However, Sanji dodged the shot, and it killed the priest instead. Hearing the sound of a gunshot, Luffy and his duplicates then burst out of the wedding cake, destroying it. An enraged Big Mom attempted to attack Luffy, but Katakuri intercepted him, having foreseen that Luffy aimed to destroy the portrait of Carmel.
Jinbe managed to help Luffy escape from Katakuri’s grasp, and he confronted Big Mom, officially resigning from her crew. Jinbe was fine with Big Mom taking his lifespan in retribution, as long as she did not harm any of his comrades. However, his fearlessness rendered Big Mom unable to take his lifespan. Further enraged, Big Mom resorted to brute force as she attacked him with Prometheus. Amidst the chaos, a disguised Brook shattered Carmel’s portrait.
Big Mom entered a state of shock as her rage reached a breaking point over the loss of both the cake and the portrait, and while she was incapacitated, her forces went after the alliance. During the fight, many of the Big Mom Pirates prepared to execute their plan by trapping and executing the Vinsmokes. Bege managed to rendezvous with Luffy and had him take the portrait back to Big Mom, and as Katakuri went after Luffy, Bege shot him in order to stall him, shocking the Big Mom Pirates with his display of treason. Katakuri told Perospero to shoot the Vinsmokes as he chased Luffy, dodging Bege, Jinbe, and Pedro before pinning Luffy down. However, Luffy managed to stretch his arms to move the portrait in front of Big Mom, causing her to focus on it and scream, unleashing a blast of Supreme King Haki.
The blast knocked out many people, and those who withstood it were rendered unable to move due to the power of the scream, which prevented the Big Mom Pirates from executing the Vinsmokes, who were freed by Sanji and given back their Raid Suits by Nami. Bege and his crew then prepared to assassinate Big Mom, but the pressure of her scream nullified their weapons. Katakuri made earplugs for his crewmates, and they regained their composure as they chased after the enemy alliance. Bege then transformed into a giant human fortress, and the Big Mom Pirates continued attacking the alliance as they tried to get inside Bege. Some of them attempted to finish their job of killing the Vinsmokes, but were beaten once the Vinsmokes put on their Raid Suits.
When the enemy alliance all got inside Bege, the Big Mom Pirates besieged their traitorous crewmate as they immobilized him. Big Mom then regained her senses and attacked Bege herself for his betrayal. As she attacked Bege’s fortress, her crew lay in wait, and when Bege reverted back to his human form, they immediately opened fire on him, but the attack was quickly countered by the Vinsmoke Family. Big Mom attacked Reiju, but was countered by Luffy and Sanji. The Big Mom Pirates attempted to stop Caesar, and the Vinsmokes stepped in to counter them.
Sanji pulled Luffy away from fighting Big Mom, and Judge came in to fight her, only to be swiftly defeated. The Big Mom Pirates then quickly defeated Luffy, Sanji, and the Vinsmokes. However, during the battle, the Tamatebako fell off the Chateau during a scuffle between Big Mom’s wedding guests, causing a massive explosion at its base that caused it to topple over. As the Chateau came crashing down, their enemies used the destruction as a chance to escape and leave the crew to their fate. However, Streusen turned the top part of the Chateau into soft and fluffy cake, cushioning the fall.
As the Big Mom Pirates began splitting up to pursue the enemy alliance, Big Mom suddenly developed a craving for wedding cake. She encountered and killed Opera before coming to her strategizing crew members. Perospero lied that the Straw Hats had another cake, and she went after them. Pudding then came and told her siblings that she would make a new cake for Big Mom with the help of Chiffon. The Big Mom Pirates split to pursue their enemies, and Katakuri took a legion of soldiers to lie in wait at the Thousand Sunny while a massive fleet began converging on Whole Cake Island.
Big Mom caught up to the Straw Hats, but Nami managed to keep her at bay by feeding Zeus storm clouds. Some of the crew came to reinforce Big Mom, and Zeus unwittingly ate a large amount of storm energy, allowing Nami to hit all of them with a massive lightning bolt. Having recruited Chiffon, Pudding went to recruit Sanji to make the cake, secretly being on his side now. Katakuri’s forces confronted Brook and Chopper when the two of them returned to the Sunny, and the two managed to take down several grunt soldiers. However, Perospero moved in to kill the two of them by suffocating them with candy, and with Sanji having joined Pudding, the Straw Hats made it to the Sunny with Big Mom still on their tail.
They fought Katakuri and Perospero to get the Sunny back, but the Big Mom Pirates’ fleet converged on them and prepared to destroy them. However, Perospero was suddenly attacked by Pedro, who engulfed him in a suicidal explosion. A severely injured Perospero was unable to maintain the candy trapping the Thousand Sunny, allowing the Straw Hats to escape Whole Cake Island with a Coup de Burst. Before escaping, Luffy took Katakuri into the Mirro-World, where they continued their battle. Katakuri battled Luffy and brutalized him as the Straw Hat attempted to prevent the other Big Mom Pirates from attacking the Sunny through the mirrors on it.
Perospero helped Big Mom continue to pursue the Straw Hats by having her walk on a candy sea slug. Pudding, Chiffon, and Sanji arrived at Cacao Island, where they enlisted the WCI 31 to help them make it in three hours. The group on the Sunny were preoccupied when Big Mom created a massive wave to kill them. The Straw Hats escaped the wave, and thanks to Luffy, they managed to cut off mirror access to the Sunny by breaking their mirrors. The Big Mom Pirates initially thought they were dead, but Brûlée overheard Luffy communicating with his crewmates and reported to Perospero.
The Fire Tank Pirates eluded Custard’s forces, while the Germa decimated the forces sent after them and tricked the others with a fake report. In the Mirro-World, Katakuri continued fighting Luffy, initially overpowering the Straw Hat, but tried to end the fight early to get to his snack time, which allowed Luffy to discover his darkest secret. As Katakuri lost his composure, Luffy managed to land a hit on him. Luffy then activated his Gear 4 and gained the upper hand against Katakuri. As they fought, Brûlée reported to Pudding about the current status of their crew.
Big Mom began rampaging on Nuts Island, and outside the Sweets Factory, Oven stood guard and beat up Pound when he came to see Chiffon. When Katakuri regained his composure, Luffy lost the advantage, and his Gear 4 form wore off. Luffy retreated and took Brûlée through a mirror to Nuts Island. While trying to stop Big Mom from destroying Nuts Island, Perospero and Amande spotted Luffy. Perospero then directed Big Mom’s attention to him, and she began pursuing him.
As this happened, the remaining Big Mom Pirates assembled their fleet to go after their enemies once more. On Cacao Island, Pudding’s group prepared to transport the cake, but Oven arrested Chiffon for helping Bege. The Fire Tank Pirates came to the island as they were pursued by a fleet of Tartes ships. Oven attempted to use Chiffon as a hostage only to be shot by Bege. Bege reveal that his ship can travel on land, and during the scuffle against Oven’s forces, he rescued the cake-baking team and acquired the cake.
As they left the island, Oven attempted to attack Bege’s ship by boiling the sea, but he was attacked by Pound, distracting him long enough to let Bege’s ship escape. Meanwhile, Big Mom and Perospero, and caught up to the Thousand Sunny. Squads of the Big Mom Pirates fleet, led by Bavarois, Daifuku, and Smoothie, joined Big Mom and surrounded the Sunny. However, Daifuku’s fleet came under attack by Carrot, who activated the Mink Tribe’s Sulong Form, and was decimated, giving the Sunny an opening. However, Big Mom went to attack the Sunny herself after summoning Zeus and Prometheus back to her.
As she looked for cake, Jinbe managed to knock her off the ship and the Straw Hats captured Zeus, but Big Mom continued pursuing the Sunny with Prometheus. Katakuri began battling Luffy again after the latter returned to the Mirro-World, and their fight was witnessed by Katakuri’s sister Flampe and her subordinates. The Nostra Castello approached the Thousand Sunny and seeing the cake on Bege’s ship, Big Mom’s attention turned to the Fire Tank Pirates. As Bege lured Big Mom to Liqueur Island, Perospero and Bavarois’s groups followed them while Smoothie’s fleet continued pursuing the Thousand Sunny. At Cacao Island, the Big Mom Pirates set up a blockade and Oven prepared a trap for Luffy.
During the clash between Luffy and Katakuri, Flampe’s interference enabled the Sweet Commander to deal a devastating blow to Luffy. After finding out about Flampe’s meddling, Katakuri injured himself and revealed his mouth to her, causing her to start detesting him. After knocking out Flampe and her subordinates with Supreme King Haki, Luffy and Katakuri resumed their fight. Katakuri and Luffy continued to trade blows with each other. While pursuing the Sunny, Smoothie increased in size and tried to sink the Straw Hats’ ship.
At Cacao Island, more members of the Charlotte Family and their squads joined Oven and his battalion in preparation to ambush the Straw Hats. Luffy activated another version of Gear 4 called Snakeman, before meeting Katakuri in one final clash. Luffy emerged the victor and as the Straw Hats’ promised rendezvous time on Cacao Island drew near, the Big Mom Pirates assembled on the island prepared to ambush Luffy once he exited the Mirro-World. Inside the Mirro-World, Pekoms captured Brûlée and planned to help Luffy. Upon exiting the Mirro-World, Pekoms planned to help Luffy escape Oven’s forces by using Brûlée as a shield and activating his Sulong form.
However, Pekoms was quickly overwhelmed. Sanji attempted to escape with Luffy, but the Big Mom Pirates manage to corner them. Their skirmish was interrupted when Germa 66 arrived and attacked the Big Mom Pirates. When they heard that Luffy defeated Katakuri, the Big Mom Pirates were shocked and enraged at the news. They continued their efforts to stop Luffy and Sanji, but their attempts were thwarted by the Vinsmokes.
After Luffy and Sanji made it back to the Thousand Sunny, the Big Mom Pirates continued pursuing them at sea, but they were further hindered by Judge and the unexpected arrival of the Sun Pirates. Meanwhile, Big Mom followed the Fire Tank Pirates to Funwari Island and prepared to eat the cake after they dropped it off. Big Mom ate the cake, and she enjoyed it, which finally satiated her craving. As the battle raged on at Cacao Island, the Big Mom Pirates acquired anti-Germa bullets and used them to injure the Vinsmokes. Oven heated up the sea to overwhelm the Sun Pirates and the Queen Mama Chanter attacked the Thousand Sunny. However, Wadatsumi saved the Sunny by switching it with the Sun Pirates’ ship. As the Straw Hats make their getaway, the Big Mom Pirates were held back by the Sun Pirates. Meanwhile, Big Mom rushed to Cacao Island after coming back to her senses. The Big Mom Pirates failed to stop the Straw Hats from escaping. Before the Sun Pirates and Germa 66 could retreat, Big Mom arrived at Cacao Island.
Levely Arc
After the battle at Cacao Island, Big Mom returned to Whole Cake Island and read the newspaper that glorified Luffy before swearing revenge against him. She later contacted Kaidou and they argued over who had the right to kill Luffy.
Wano Country Saga
Wano Country Arc
The Big Mom Pirates arrived at Wano Country with the intent to kill Luffy, but before they could enter the country, they were stopped by King who caused the Queen Mama Chanter to flip over and fall back to the bottom of the waterfall, causing Big Mom to sink into the sea. Afterwards, Big Mom washed ashore on Kuri Beach, where she was found by Chopper, Tama, Kiku, and Momonosuke. Having lost her memories, she forgot even her own identity. Fortunately for Big Mom’s crew, the Queen Mama Chanter did not capsize during the fall. On the seas near Wano, the crew reflected on the current situation.
Meanwhile, the amnesiac Big Mom journeyed to Udon with Chopper’s group. She broke into the Prisoner Mine, where she fought with Luffy and Queen. Queen restored her memories by diving onto her head and she fell asleep, allowing him to capture her and bring her to Onigashima. At Onigashima, Big Mom reunited with Kaidou and the two began battling. After fighting for at least an entire night, they formed a pirate alliance to take over the world.
On the day of the Fire Festival, the Big Mom Pirates attempted to climb the waterfall again, but this time, Marco flew in and knocked the ship down. Perospero climbed the waterfall on a candy mount and proceeded to Onigashima on his own. At some point, he encountered Marco and proposed that they work together to take down Kaidou, and the two arrived together at Onigashima’s entrance. Perospero later reunited with his mother, but she shot down his misgivings about the alliance with Kaidou, telling him the alliance was her idea and that she still intended to become the Pirate King. With her son back on her side, Big Mom briefly clashed with Marco and left him open for Perospero to finish off, but the arrival of Wanda and Carrot, who were seeking to avenge Pedro, stopped Perospero, so Big Mom left them to their personal squabbles. Big Mom flew up to the roof to reunite with Kaidou, and they were confronted by several members of the Worst Generation: Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Kid, Killer, and Trafalgar Law. After defeating Wanda and Carrot, Perospero went into the Skull Dome and assisted Queen in fighting on the Live Floor. Perospero attempted to assassinate Sanji, but Nekomamushi interrupted him and eventually defeated him. Big Mom herself was later defeated by the combined efforts of Kid and Law, and fell down a hole to Wano’s magma chamber, where she was later joined by the defeated Kaidou. As they lay there, a volcano erupted where Onigashima had once sat. A week after the raid succeeded, while Morgans was talking about the news the raid has created, he mentions that Cipher Pol’s transmission broke off right after they saw Big Mom Pirates’ ship, implying that the Big Mom Pirates were still attempting to rescue Big Mom.
Final Saga
Egghead Arc
Some time later, many officers of the crew watched Vegapunk’s broadcast to the world in Totto Land.
Translation And Dub Issues
Since the crew is named after the captain’s epithet, it shares the same inconsistency with its name spelling. In the magazine release of Chapter 930, the crew’s name was romanized as “Big Mam Pirates” despite the sails reading “Big Mom;” the romanization was corrected in the volume release. In addition, the Three Sweet Commanders were renamed as the Three Sweet Generals in the English dub.
Trivia
- The Big Mom Pirates are the oldest known active pirate crew, having been operating for the past 62 years. Their 62 years of existence is also the longest amount of time that any pirate crew in history has been known to continuously operate.
- The Big Mom Pirates have the most known natural Devil Fruit users in a pirate crew, with 16 users (17 before Bege’s betrayal).
- They also currently have the largest number of Paramecia fruit users in a single organization with 14 known users (15 if the traitor Capone Bege is included). Additionally, they have two Zoan users.
- The Donquixote Pirates technically tie with them with 15 Paramecia Devil Fruit users, if their traitors Donquixote Rosinante, Trafalgar D. Water Law and Viola are included.
- All three of the active Sweet Commanders are the eldest sibling of their respective triplet sets.
- While Big Mom is known for sending gruesome presents to those who refuse to go to her tea parties, she has ironically received one of her own, courtesy of Luffy: the Tamatebako box, which the Minister of the Right has rigged to explode if anyone tries opening it, though Luffy was not made aware of this even after he had given away the box to Pekoms and Tamago, thinking it would appease Big Mom. The box eventually did explode, and while it failed to kill Big Mom, it destroyed enough of the base of the Whole Cake Chateau to cause it to topple over, which in a twist of fate saved the lives of both the Straw Hat-Fire Tank Alliance and the Vinsmoke Family.
- The Big Mom Pirates are themed after the works of fairy tales and fantasy fiction. The references are mostly from Lewis Carroll’s most famous series of novels, Alice and its adaptations.
- Some members of the crew share the Charlotte Family’s food-themed names.
