Introduction

Edison, also designated as Punk-03 (PUNK-03(パンク スリー), Panku-Surī?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "thinking". He is a major companion and ally to the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.Edison, also designated as Punk-03 (PUNK-03(パンク スリー), Panku-Surī?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "thinking". He is a major companion and ally to the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.

Appearance

Summary

Edison is a small mechanical creature, being similar in size to a young child. His head is shaped like an American football with two appendages on top of it resembling rabbit ears or a power plug, and eyes bulging out of an opening in the front; the number 03 is branded on his forehead. Over his body, Edison wears a jacket which is green on the left side and white on the right; the kanji for "idea" (想, sō?) is printed on the right breast, and the left side has a pattern resembling a spear. Edison possesses metallic fingers, thin rod-like legs, and blocky feet. After the Egghead Incident, Edison rebuilt his damaged body and combined it with parts from other Satellites: his own head, Shaka's torso and legs, Atlas's left arm, and Pythagoras' right arm.

Personality

Summary

Being designated the "thinking" satellite of Vegapunk, Edison is extremely energetic and constantly busy plotting new invention ideas and running experiments. This behavior even continues should dangerous situations arise, or danger be imminent as Edison was coming up with ideas when CP0 arrived at the Labophase to start their assassination on all Vegapunks. He frequently interjects with "Eureka!" whenever having an idea. Edison was shown to be taken aback toward Lilith's violent tendencies and threats. Edison also seems to care for Vegapunk's allies, as Edison was worried that Stussy would become a target of the World Government should her true allegiance towards Vegapunk become known to the World Government and initially was unsure to contact her when CP0 came close to eliminate all Vegapunks. Edison would later tell Stussy to escape with the Straw Hat Pirates, encouraging her to live after the Stella died.

Relationships

Satellites

While Vegapunk's satellites all refer to themselves as Vegapunk, they each exemplify only one portion of Vegapunk's personality, and all have their own wills and desires and are therefore effectively six unique people. While this normally is not an issue as Vegapunk is supposed to synchronize his brain with all of his satellites via Punk Records, York decided to betray Vegapunk and her fellow satellites in an effort to become a World Noble. Once her treachery was revealed, she was effectively treated as an enemy by Vegapunk and the other satellites. Edison foils York's plans by making the Punk Records floot away from the rest of the Island. Following the Egghead Incident, Edison and the other Satellites shown their disdain for York and agree to destroy all of York's spare parts so that she will not be revived, if she gets killed. He seems to have a good relationship with the other satellites otherwise, as he let the 3 destroyed satellites’ consciousnesses live in his rebuilt body.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being a satellite of Vegapunk, Edison has been a contributor to the genius scientist's numerous technological developments, appearing to be primarily responsible for conceiving and mapping out details for new inventions.

Equipment

Edison wears a jetpack on his back, allowing him to fly and hover in the air.

History

Past

During a visit to Mary Geoise, as a memory of Vegapunk, Edison experienced the cruelty of the World Nobles.

Final Saga

Egghead Arc

Edison was in a control room with Lilith and Pythagoras, monitoring S-Shark as it battled against some members of the Straw Hat Pirates. However, Edison repeatedly got distracted by new invention ideas and stepped away to plot and test them. Edison later proclaimed to have an idea when CP0 blocked off all exits. When Vegapunk contacted a secret ally of theirs, Stussy, Edison worried about her unsafe future since aiding them would make her a target for the World Government, but was also relieved since her aid would make their escape easier than before. When the Seraphim later went to the Labophase on their own after CP0 arrived there, Edison alongside Lilith made their way outside to try to take over the authority over the Seraphim, and Edison later successfully made them stop attacking the Labophase after Rob Lucci and Kaku were subdued by Stussy. Edison later joined the Straw Hats, Stussy and the other satellites in the control room to start their search for the main Vegapunk after commenting on how they were able to repair Atlas. Edison partnered up with Brook and Nami to look for the Stella. In Tower A Floor 3, as they looked around, Nami was sidetracked by diamonds and filled a backpack with them. Edison reminded her that their mission was to find Stella, so she set the backpack down for later. When Edison informed her that the diamonds were manmade, Nami became more marveled at the potential fortune. Later, S-Shark attacked and knocked out Edison. Nami later held him in her arms telling him to "hang in there". Edison later rejoined the rest of the surviving satellites, Vegapunk and the Straw Hats after they had captured the traitor York, though his prior injuries had not been repaired. Despite his injured state, he along with Vegapunk and Atlas attempted to crack the code that York placed on the Frontier Dome, being able to crack it successfully, much to York's annoyance. Edison was later horrified when Kizaru suddenly showed up in the Control Room and got more surprised when he saw a giant Luffy grabbing Kizaru. When Vegapunk and Atlas traveled to the Fabiriophase, Edison stayed behind and opened up the Frontier Dome for them. Edison regrouped with Nami, Usopp, Robin, and Chopper where he was worried about the state of Vegapunk. Edison along with Nami, Usopp, and Chopper spotted the Giant Warrior Pirates noting how they were attacking the Marine ships and realized they must have heard the news off the incident on Egghead and came to help. Afterward, Edison and the others caught wind of Vegapunk's pre recorded message being signaled across the island. Nami questioned Edison on why they were going to leave Stussy behind, and he explained there was no choice since the Frontier Dome needed to go down the instant the Thousand Sunny attempted to flee, and it was Stussy's own choice to stay behind and deactivate it from the Command Tower. As such, the only thing they could do for her efforts now would be to escape. Robin asked on how they could cover the distance needed to avoid crashing without the Vegaforce-01 carrying them, and Edison admitted he too did not know himself. Usopp then informed the group that he finished loading up the Coup de Burst and they could take off once Zoro and Jinbe arrived, but if they did not make it, they would have to improvise to escape, prompting Edison to call the crew rowdy. Edison then told everyone he had always loved the theory that miracles happen because guts triumphed over everything and as such, he decided to test for himself if they could make the jump by flying through the Frontier Dome, telling them to trust in him. Edison managed to succeed in passing through the Frontier Dome, but was seriously injured as a result. He extended the islands clouds for the Straw Hats ship to land into the sea, and hoped to himself that the Straw Hats would escape without the marines catching them. As the lower half of the Labophase was cut down by Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, Edison was no longer able to extend the clouds for the Straw Hats. As he informed Stussy of what happened and told her to run, she asked for permission to free Kaku. As she guaranteed he would not cause trouble for the Straw Hats, Edison apologized for getting her involved and blowing her cover, knowing she did not want to turn against her friends from Cipher Pol. He granted her permission while also telling her to survive. Afterwards, Edison desynchronized from Punk Records, hiding his survival from York. He later set the Cloud Plant to create copious floating Island Clouds and then made his way back up to the Labophase. When York realized what he was plotting, she fired at the anti-gravity device that linked Punk Records to the Labophase in order to minimize her losses. As Punk Records rose higher into sky, Edison rebuilt his body with spare parts of the destroyed Satellites while discussing the situation with them. Atlas suggested throwing out York's parts, with which Edison agreed. The combined Vegapunk then contacted Haredas, who was shocked to hear that he was alive.

Summary

Edison's design changed wildly throughout his development. His appearance ranged from a bulkier robot with "VEGA" on the front, to a taller robot with a mustache.

Trivia

Summary

Edison's name may be based on Thomas Edison, an American inventor who is well-known for inventing the first practical light bulb, gramophone, and the motion picture camera. Edison's name may also be based on Edison, the name of one of the Earth moon's craters named after the real-world inventor. This trait is shared with fellow satellites Pythagoras and Atlas. Edison has a tendency to shout "Eureka!", a famous interjection commonly associated with celebrating an invention or discovery. This is most famously attributed to the Ancient Greek mathematician and philosopher Archimedes. Edison's favorite foods are pie and coffee, though he lets York eat most of his meals.

Vegapunk

Introduction

Dr. Vegapunk was the leading scientist of the SSG in the employment of the Marines. His work included discovering the secrets and uses of seastone, the secrets of how Devil Fruit powers work, the co-discovery of the Lineage Factor and its applications, the creation of the Pacifista and Seraphim, and various other scientific achievements that are said to be at least 500 years ahead of current technology. He hailed from the technologically advanced Karakuri Island and resided on Egghead, where his laboratory is located. Before being employed under the World Government, Vegapunk had been the director of an outlaw scientific research team known as MADS, where he worked alongside other notable scientists such as Caesar Clown, Vinsmoke Judge, Queen, and Buckingham Stussy. The team was eventually arrested, and Vegapunk was later integrated into the Marines as its head scientist after MADS' dissolution. However, once the World Government learned he was researching the Void Century, they dispatched CP0 and conspired with his own satellite York to eliminate him, which resulted in the monumental Egghead Incident. Vegapunk would end up being killed by his old friend, Admiral Kizaru, during the ensuing Buster Call on Egghead. Foreseeing this, however, Vegapunk left behind an important message regarding a catastrophic global future event to be broadcasted around the world in the event of his death. Currently one of Vegapunk's Satellites Lilith is trying to resurrect him via cloning. First mentioned during the Post-Enies Lobby Arc, Vegapunk was a major background character throughout the series until his proper introduction during the Egghead Arc, becoming a major ally to the Straw Hat Pirates alongside his satellites and playing a central role during its ongoings.Dr. Vegapunk was the leading scientist of the SSG in the employment of the Marines. Satellites

Summary

Approximately two years ago, due to being occupied with his inventions, Vegapunk split his being into six different people, referred to as satellites (猫(サテライト), sateraito?, kanji literally meaning "cats") or "offshoots" (分身, bunshin?), which share Vegapunk's brain via Punk Records. These satellites all identify as Dr. Vegapunk and will introduce themselves as such, but also possess their own names and number designations to distinguish them, making them effectively six unique people. The satellites are also distinguished by embodying a particular aspect of Vegapunk's personality. Although they all have similar thought patterns, they use different first person pronouns and speech patterns. His true body was called the "Stella". The method Vegapunk used in order to split his being into six different entities is still unknown. The destruction of a satellite's body does not mean they are killed, as they have countless spare parts to reupload their consciousnesses into. During the Egghead Incident, York betrayed Stella and the other satellites, personally shooting Shaka in the head, and having S-Snake crush Pythagoras. Edison was later disconnected from Punk Records while saving Stussy, while Atlas detonated herself to ensure that the Straw Hats and Lilith would escape from Egghead. Shaka, Pythagoras, and Atlas survived by reconvening into Edison's body, and the combined Vegapunk rebuilt himself using spare parts. Stella was killed by Kizaru, which did not affect the satellites' survivals.

Appearance

Summary

Vegapunk was a relatively tall elderly man, having stood just under Jinbe in height (without his brain), with slender limbs and red cheeks. He had a noticeably elongated but neatly sliced head and had a shaft driven in to support a structure resembling the top of an apple-core and its leaf. His forehead was remarkably wide while his eyes were close to his potato nose. His tongue was incredibly long, reaching all the way to his groin, and was always sticking out of his mouth. He had a bald head on top, but had spiky white hair on the sides, as well as a thick mustache. He wore a short white coat with SSG on the back, a pink shirt with red polka dots, purple pants, and purple DOM shoes. Before he cut out his brain, the size of his head had supposedly reached the height of giants. When he was 43 years old, Vegapunk had an enlarged head accounting for much of his height, and his hair was brown and covered most of his head. He wore a leather jacket, a white shirt, a belt, black pants, and dress shoes. Three years ago, Vegapunk created Punk Records and transferred his enlarged brain there to significantly shrink his head. When he was part of MADS, his head was much smaller with a bandage on the left side and lacked the mustache. He wore a Hawaiian shirt and goggles. During Kuma's explanation on his Pacifista modification, he seemed to be wearing yellow gloves and a striped shirt with a white lab coat.

Personality

Summary

In his youth, Vegapunk was a generous person who cared very much for the inhabitants of his island, willing to help them with his inventions. He is considered the island's pride and joy, and the residents are still hoping for his return. Each of Vegapunk's six satellites possesses a dominant personality trait that is presumably present in Vegapunk in general. While he had strong morals and a sense of justice and pride as a scientist (Shaka), he also possessed malevolent traits and an inclination to steal from others in order to fund his research (Lilith) and could be prone to greed and desire (York); there is considerable conflict and reasoning between these two sides. He appeared to be quite thoughtful and wise (Edison and Pythagoras) but could be prone to getting angry at other people's inability to properly replicate and utilize his technological developments, to the point of lashing out violently (Atlas). Despite his many traits, Vegapunk was ultimately a man of great compassion with a strong sense of morality (which explains why Shaka was seen as the satellites' leader). Much like Dragon, he also despised and lamented the political corruption of the world under the World Govenrment's tyranny, but chose to turn a blind eye to it, using the resources they provided him to further his research for the sake of peace and prosperity for humanity. Due to his compassion, Vegapunk secretly programmed all the Pacifistas to make Bonney the highest authority to prevent a possible tragedy where Bonney, whom Kuma gave his life to protect, ended up getting killed by a fully modified Kuma or his clones by the World Government. Vegapunk has also shown himself to be remorseful of the World Government using the Mother Flame to power up the Ancient Weapon to destroy Lulusia Kingdom when he bowed down to apologize to everyone who was watching his recorded message. Unlike his former fellow MADS scientists Caesar Clown, Vinsmoke Judge and Queen, Vegapunk was far more moral about what he would do in pursuit of scientific achievements. He refused to involve children in the gigantification process despite repeated failures and vetoed the creation or release of the H2S poison gas weapon for fear of it harming innocent people. He also preferred to focus on developing peaceful inventions contrary to the dangerous creations of his former colleagues and was against the idea of converting people into cyborgs like Kuma that included stripping them of their own free will, memories, and emotions comparing this to murder. Likewise, Vegapunk also despised unethical human experimentation and was outraged to learn it was Saturn's experiments that led to the manifestation of the Sapphire Scales on Ginny and Bonney. Vegapunk had a strongly idealistic and humanitarian side, proudly pronouncing his plans to use his future world-spanning inventions to help humanity and stop ongoing conflicts such as wars, even choosing to work for the World Government out of belief he could do more good for people by doing so. Unfortunately, certain people, like Jewelry Bonney, fail to see that side of Vegapunk as she was under the belief that he had no qualms with committing sacrifices and atrocities, personal or otherwise, in his aim for greater knowledge and progress. This infamous perception is wrong, as Vegapunk tragically cried when he carried out the order given by Saturn and opposed installing a self-destruct mechanism in Kuma, suggesting applying a device that would give him "two personalities" to give Kuma the opportunity to reunite with his daughter. When Saturn ordered a Buster Call on Egghead, Vegapunk desperately pleaded with the Elder and Kizaru to reconsider, as destroying Egghead means destroying all the scientific progress made there, which would be a bigger loss to humanity than to him personally. Given his nature as a scientist, Vegapunk had a natural interest in theories and the nature of science itself. He would elaborate on the works of other scientists if he found them interesting. When he heard that a certain scholar in the West Blue theorized that the human body loses 21 grams if they die, which was the weight of the soul, Vegapunk got so intrigued that he wanted to see it for himself, doing experiments on his thoughts and observing. In addition to the benefits of being an acclaimed scientist, Vegapunk was smart enough aware of the dangers of his job, especially regarding the Ohara Incident and the Void Century. Vegapunk considered it a scientist's nature to want to peek at answers, even knowing he had uncovered too much of the past to be kept alive. He knew that CP0 was sent to assassinate him and prevent him from continuing his research. Vegapunk took his survival seriously and did not hesitate to ask for help when necessary. He requested Luffy to get him off Egghead and away from the World Government when they moved to assassinate him, despite just meeting the young Emperor. He did not mind dragging others allies into helping him without considering their circumstances first. However, this does not mean Vegapunk was a coward who would abandon others to save his own skin and feel no guilt about what would happen to others because of his action. In fact, Vegapunk was willing to put himself in the line of danger to save Bonney after she was knocked down to the Fabiriophase, despite being the Marines' main target. At the same time, however, he did not rule out his death being possible or perhaps even inevitable, so he pre recorded a message to the world about what secrets that the World Government was trying to hide. Vegapunk was also cautious as he knew the Five Elders would attempt to stop his pre-recorded message broadcast. He fooled them by using a Den Den Mushi as a decoy by disguising it as the Broadcast Den Den Mushi. While Vegapunk was a man of science, he was not above believing in things outside of science. He expressed interest in the legend of the Sun God Nika and did not deny the possibility of gods being real. When he saw Luffy demonstrating his Gear 5 form, which is the true form of Nika, he proclaimed that fate itself brought Luffy to him. After Kuma's miraculous appearance on Egghead in time to save his daughter Bonney from Saturn, despite there being no logical way for the former Warlord to be able to move or even know about his daughter's situation, Vegapunk was so confused by it, but he decided to chalk it up to 'love' and the Buccaneer race's special power. He seemed to have an interest for dragons, as he created two of them on Punk Hazard, and an artificial Devil Fruit that allows the user to transform into one. However, due to his serious perfectionism, he deemed the fruit a failure since its dragon form was not the same color as the dragon form bestowed by the real Devil Fruit it was based on. He had a verbal tic in which he added "Quasar" (クエーサー, Kuēsā?) to his requests for help.

Relationships

Satellites

While Vegapunk's satellites all refer to themselves as Vegapunk, they each exemplify only one portion of Vegapunk's personality, and all have their own wills and desires and are therefore effectively six unique people. While this normally is not an issue as Vegapunk was supposed to synchronize his brain with all of his satellites via Punk Records, York decided to betray Vegapunk and her fellow satellites in an effort to become a World Noble. Once her treachery was revealed, she was effectively treated as an enemy by Vegapunk and the other satellites. Little did York know, Vegapunk, Shaka, and Pythagoras, were all already aware of her betrayal. When it was revealed that one of his satellites was leaking to the World Government his studies in the Void Century, he privately confirmed to Shaka that him and Pythagoras were the only two he trusted without question. Despite this, Vegapunk seemed to be on good terms with all of his Satellites (minus York), as he pre-recorded a message together with Shaka and Pythagoras about the truth of the world all while they conversed about scientific ideas and Vegapunk shared a coffee with them, even all of them jokingly spending the time when Vegapunk burned his tongue on the coffee, with Pythagoras worried and Shaka knowing it had that effect.

World Government
Summary

Vegapunk was once arrested by the World Government for his dangerous experiments in relation to research conducted into the Lineage Factor and cloning. Despite this run in with the bureaucracy, he was employed as their chief scientist in the Marines. He would go onto becoming the leader of the SSG. Despite being of great help in drastically increasing the Marines' military might with his inventions of the Pacifista and Seraphim, among presumably other things, the World Government has elected to kill him, which CP0 was sent on a mission to do, due to the fear he might perceive too much about the truth. Their fear was proven correct, as Vegapunk had studied all the books the scholars of Ohara had saved during the Ohara Incident and learned about the Ancient Kingdom. Understanding what the higher-ups would do were they to discover this, Vegapunk chose to keep it a secret, never revealing to them that Ohara had success in protecting their prized books. Vegapunk does not seem to view the World Government in a positive light, admitting to the Straw Hats he completely used all of the funding given for his inventions and only joining them to further his own research endeavors. Having seen the horrid ways of the World Nobles, Vegapunk was disgusted by them and was shocked that York would want to become one of them. Vegapunk cared about the staff that worked on Egghead. He never told any of them about his research into the Void Century so they would not be treated as criminals should the World Government find out. He was horrified and outraged that Saturn ordered the ship carrying all the escape staff to be destroyed on the possibility that someone on board knew something. Vegapunk seemed to display a particularly antagonistic relationship with Saint Jaygarcia Saturn. While they originally met on positive terms when Vegapunk was welcomed to Mary Geoise for winning the Ibel Peace Prize, that was where their cordiality ended, when Vegapunk witnessed the deplorable behavior of the World Nobles. Vegapunk and Saturn had argued on at least two separate occasions on the subject of the unethical nature of Kuma's conversion into a human weapon. The two seemed to have a mutual disrespect for one another, with Vegapunk fearlessly arguing with Saturn, whilst Saturn rejected Vegapunk's concerns and reminded him of his place. Saturn would eventually order Vegapunk's death for studying the Void Century, and went to Egghead, where he confronted Vegapunk personally. When they met in-person, they were hostile toward each other. Vegapunk was even more infuriated when he learned how Saturn’s actions made Kuma’s life tragic and ruined his loved ones’ life. When realizing Kuma's self-destruction mechanism was not working, Saturn demanded to know if this was Vegapunk's doing, which he confirmed because he did not install the mechanism Saturn had in mind in Kuma, instead installing a shut-down feature that deactivated the implants used to control Kuma. Upon this, Saturn dubbed Vegapunk a traitor. When Saturn questioned Vegapunk on how Kuma was still able to retain his free will and attack him, Vegapunk cheekily told him the "power of love" was the answer. When Saturn learned of Vegapunk's secret betrayal by programming the Kuma-based Pacifista to obey Jewelry Bonney above all others, he furiously stabbed Vegapunk.

Sentomaru

When Sentomaru was a young boy, Vegapunk saved him, thus Sentomaru considers Vegapunk's safety as a personal debt. However, Vegapunk does mention this debt as a way to pressure Sentomaru into swaying his loyalty from the Marines to him. Since then, Sentomaru served as his bodyguard, before becoming a Marine officer in between the timeskip. Shaka trusts his abilities and allegiance enough to put three Seraphim under his command when CP0 invaded Egghead. Vegapunk was deeply saddened to see Sentomaru struck down in order to help him escape, openly crying after Kizaru defeated him. Sentomaru called Vegapunk "Old Man Punk".

Kizaru

Vegapunk was acquainted with Borsalino in his younger days as a Marine cadet as, while on a mission to a village to deal with a bear problem, they encountered a young Sentomaru who defeated the bears and requested to be Vegapunk's bodyguard and to be trained by Borsalino. The three of them became close as Borsalino agreed to use his Devil Fruit ability for Vegapunk to study for a future project and to entertain Sentomaru. As the years went by and with Borsalino eventually becoming an admiral, their relationship soured, with Vegapunk being more apprehensive towards him after he brought a Marine fleet to surround Egghead under orders, with Vegapunk claiming he hates this side of Borsalino the most, even bluntly telling him to shut up when he defended the suggestion of turning Kuma into a human weapon. Despite this, they were still on relatively good enough terms that he was seen eating and partying with Vegapunk and Sentomaru while Kuma and Bonney were at his lab. Three and a half years later, the World Government deemed Vegapunk a threat and had sent Kizaru to kill him, to which he obliged with some reservations. Vegapunk, fully aware of how strong Kizaru is, held fear of and panicked when he managed to break into the Labophase to confront him. Kizaru has admitted to Vegapunk that having to kill an old friend is not easy for him. Vegapunk had voiced his disgust at Kizaru labelling him a sad man, to which the Admiral does not deny and wishes he brought darker sunglasses. Tragically, Kizaru would be the one to deal the final strike that led to Vegapunk's death, ultimately showing their former friendship was not enough to convince Kizaru to turn away from his mission. Despite this, Kizaru was still conflicted about this, as when Fleet Admiral Sakazuki warned him about "not [having] done a sloppy job", Kizaru asked the Fleet Admiral if he ever killed a close friend and angrily and tearfully retorted that if Sakazuki had time to doubt his job, he should come and see his work for himself.

Fujitora

Vegapunk seemed to be amicable to the newly promoted Admiral. He revealed a new invention to Fujitora that could lead to the abolishment of the Seven Warlords of the Sea system.

Other
Caesar Clown

Despite once being colleagues, Vegapunk and Caesar Clown had a bitter rivalry based on levels of recognition and ethics. When Caesar's erratic behavior got out of hand, Vegapunk decided to dismiss Caesar from his position. Caesar was also considered second best to Vegapunk. Because of this, Caesar held a grudge against him. Vegapunk also looked down on some of Caesar's achievements, such as considering the SMILEs to be unacceptable.

Bartholomew Kuma

Vegapunk met Bartholomew Kuma when he came looking for a cure for his daughter's disease. After learning he was a Buccaneer, Vegapunk offered to cure Bonney for free in exchange for participating in his cloning project, but he kept this a secret from whoever would be interested in that information. When Jaygarcia Saturn gave Vegapunk orders to erase all of Kuma's free will and memories, he was visibly angered by these demands and initially attempted to refuse them, only relenting because Kuma accepted these terms in an effort to protect Bonney, moving the doctor to tears. Over the next two years, Vegapunk and Kuma grew closer as friends while he conducted several experiments on him, including one where the latter was requested to materialize his memories through his own Devil Fruit abilities for Vegapunk to study. While Kuma at first refused, he eventually complied and allowed Vegapunk access to his now tangible memories. Vegapunk, out of respect, kept Kuma's memories locked up inside a high-security room within his laboratory. When the time came to remove Kuma's free will, Vegapunk tried to reason with Saturn to allow him bare minimum will power causing the elder to refuse telling the scientist to remove all of his will on top of applying a self-destruct switch into him. Kuma hearing this asked Vegapunk to pass on a message to his daughter, telling her to have a happy tenth birthday, and to grant him his final wish as a human being, which was to program Kuma to protect the Thousand Sunny until the Straw Hats returned. Before completing the operation, Vegapunk told Kuma he was a hero for his efforts to Bonney and many others for his sacrifices throughout his life completely breaking down in tears as he pulled the switch to erase Kuma's will. When Kuma arrived in time to save Bonney from Saturn, he was left confused on how that was possible as it defied logic and reasoning due to his memories being erased and the shutdown switch that was activated by Saturn, coming to the conclusion it must be due to his Buccaneer heritage. Seeing Kuma is unable to move due to his injuries, Vegapunk ordered Atlas to carry him. His undying respect for Kuma's bond with Bonney led him to secretly programmed Kuma's Pacifista clones to make Bonney the highest authority to prevent a possible tragedy where Bonney whom Kuma sacrifice everything to protect is killed by the Pacifista. Fittingly, his satellite Lilith shared in his desire to fix Kuma, even promising Bonney that she would restore his mind.

Straw Hat Pirates

Vegapunk seemed to have an interest in the Straw Hat Pirates because he learned from Kuma prior to losing his humanity about Luffy being Dragon's son and having similarities to Nika, as he saw no issue with granting the latter his final wish as a human to protect the group's ship, the Thousand Sunny, until a member of the crew returned for it. He fulfilled Kuma's last wish and programmed him to protect the ship for two entire years, despite his long-established history and connection to the Marines and to the World Government as a whole. One of his "satellites", Shaka even expressed an interest in meeting them after they appeared on the island of Egghead. Also, at least one part of his other interest in the Straw Hats stems from Nico Robin and her past as the only survivor of the Ohara Incident, as Shaka was seen discussing the full scale as well as the aftermath of the Ohara Incident with Robin, revealing crucial information about the survival of the former Vice Admiral Jaguar D. Saul, the safekeeping of all books of Ohara, his own study of every single book and thus his extended knowledge about the Void Century. Though he acknowledged them as pirates, he was shown to have enough trust in the Straw Hats to discuss and reveal important information about the Void Century as well as his own knowledge about it to the group, even ignoring their refusal to listen to such jeopardizing information. He was also not shy of indulging into his own past, which included his relationship with Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy's father and leader of the Revolutionary Army, much to the surprise of the Straw Hats. Later, when he saw Luffy's awakened form for the first time, he was stunned about its existence, questioning the Straw Hats if they knew what that form was. He would then explain to them what he knew about this form as being the Sun God Nika, once again leaving them surprised. He even went as far as sharing his theories about why Devil Fruits were created with the Straw Hats, showing he had enough trust in them to share what he knew about human's most desires, as he was putting it. When the Stella Vegapunk later encountered Luffy's group, he immediately recognized Luffy as the son of Monkey D. Dragon and asked him to take him away from Egghead. Vegapunk would explain his ultimate goal as well his background to the group, putting enough trust into them though he had just met them. He would even fall into funny interactions with Luffy about his extraordinary knowledge and Luffy's seemingly disinterest in such matters. His trust would go to such lengths as that he was considering Luffy and the Straw Hats the only people capable of taking him away from Egghead and keeping him safe from the World Government's clutches, a mutual feeling that was shared by Luffy who agreed to take Vegapunk with them. Vegapunk's faith in Luffy's abilities is strengthen by him being the Sun God Nika, believing even a Buster Call is a trivial problem for him. Franky, being a fellow scientist with a passion for creativity, is a huge admirer of Vegapunk since reading his notes on Baldimore and is increasingly impressed upon meeting the scientist (and his satellites) in person. Nami and Usopp, however, are more wary of him despite their impression on his genius, due to his inventions being a potential threat towards them and pirates in general. Nami vehemently objected bringing Vegapunk and his satellites with them on their ship because she does not want to deal the potential problems of doing so, despite the many advantages of having the world's smartest person as an ally. Robin is grateful to Vegapunk for protecting Ohara's legacy and revealing to her that her old friend she thought was dead was actually alive. Chopper is greatly impressed by many of Vegapunk's inventions, especially his medical purpose ones. When Vegapunk went missing, Luffy and Chopper were searching for him, as the crew would not leave Egghead without him. Luffy and his allies freed Vegapunk from his captured and detained York. Later, when Vegapunk tragically died, Sanji would carry (unknowingly) his already dead body with him, not leaving him behind and still hoping Vegapunk would get up, all while protecting him from any harm incoming. After escaping Egghead, Sanji mourns for Vegapunk when he could not save him. Before he passed on, Vegapunk expressed to Sanji his dying wish for him and his crew to be the ones to ultimately find the One Piece, showing the utmost faith he has on leaving the fate of the world up to them. Luffy cries for Vegapunk while eating after he could not save him despite their promise. But Lilith reassured them that Vegapunk, along with the other satellites, are alive despite being functionally dead, and technically Luffy did keep his promise. Luffy called Vegapunk as "Old Man Apple" and like Sentomaru, he also called Vegapunk as "Old Man Punk".

Monkey D Dragon

Vegapunk had a cordial relationship with Monkey D. Dragon, the Revolutionary. Though Vegapunk shares Dragon's contempt with the World Government's corruption, he did not join the Revolutionary Army when Dragon invited him, as he deemed the army to be poor. Regardless, the two shared their respect for Professor Clover and worked to ensure the famous archaeologist's death will not be in vain. Also, those two do keep in contact with each other as it was Dragon who recommended the scientist to Kuma, who was looking for a cure for Jewelry Bonney.

Clou D Clover

Vegapunk was a friend of the famous archaeologist Clou D. Clover, and one of the few people to know his true name. He was devastated when the Government launched a Buster Call and propaganda against Ohara for their research of the Void Century, and paid tribute to the lives lost there by placing flowers. Despite his earlier hesitation on the subject, Vegapunk also went to Elbaph to read the library of books that the New Giant Warrior Pirates retrieved and saved, intending to continue Clover's research and legacy.

Jewelry Bonney

Vegapunk knew Bonney since she was a child. However, Bonney held a grudge against him for turning her father Kuma into a mindless cyborg, and upon meeting him, she threatened to kill him and demanded that he change her father back to normal, it was then unknown that Vegapunk would act in rebellion against Saturn by turning Kuma into a cyborg without conscience. Vegapunk has shown to understand the reason why Bonney held a grudge against him and wished to do something for her. After learning the truth, her resentment toward Vegapunk was redirected to Saturn. Vegapunk greatly cared about Bonney's safety, putting her life and safety above his own. He especially worried about what would happen if Bonney, being a pirate, end up encountering a Pacifista or worse, her own father Kuma. Not wanting to see Bonney getting killed by a clone of her beloved father or Kuma killing his beloved daughter, Vegapunk secretly gave Bonney the highest authority over the Pacifista.

Stussy

Stussy is the first successful clone that Vegapunk and MADS managed to create. She was fiercely loyal to Vegapunk, and despite serving as a spy in the World Government for him for over two decades, she was awaiting for his orders to help him even if it meant betraying CP0. She mentions to have visited Egghead in the past. Stussy would protect Vegapunk from Rob Lucci, using herself as a human shield. Vegapunk also cares and respects her as a human being despite her origins as a clone and he artificially created her as he berates her for devaluing herself.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being held in regard by most of the world as the world's smartest man due to his natural genius intellect and Devil Fruit, Vegapunk had contributed to numerous technological developments and was seen as one of the most notable figures in the world. Vegapunk was notable for having formerly led MADS, a rogue research team involved in several scientific discoveries and development of weapons. After this, he began working for the World Government and became one of their scientists, holding a very high position within the organization as one of their leading scientific authorities for several years. Vegapunk was in charge of a number of highly advanced Marine and government facilities, such as Punk Hazard and Egghead. He was the leader of the Marines' scientific research and development team, The "Science Unit" (科学部隊, Kagaku Butai?) which is responsible for most of the special technology found in the hands of Marines, including, for example, the use of Seastone lining on Marine battleships, which allows those to cross the Calm Belt without disturbing the resident Sea Kings. Another major achievement of this unit consists of the Pacifista project. In addition to the normal Science Unit of the Marines, Vegapunk was in charge of the SSG, the special science division, which provided advanced technology and weaponry for the World Government, including not only the Pacifista, but also the Seraphim, which the Government hoped would be able to replace the Seven Warlords system as one of the current Three Great Powers. As the lead Scientist of both units, Vegapunk was in charge of every other scientist and researcher on the island of Egghead, with this authority being shared with his Satellites, who split his workload and responsibilities equally with him in order for him to focus on new innovations. As the creator of the Pacifista and Seraphim, Vegapunk has command over all of them, and is able to give them orders of any kind as a result, with his authority being the third highest, being shared with his satellites and being overruled only by the Five Elders themselves, who lead the World Government, and Jewelry Bonney, whom he secretly put as the highest authority for the Kuma-modeled Pacifistas. After the discovery of his research into the Void Century, Vegapunk was stripped of his authority within the World Government and Marines and was considered to be a security risk for the organization, so much so that the Five Elders ordered his assassination despite his importance and worth to the World Government.

Scientific Expertise

Vegapunk is famed as the greatest scientific genius the world has ever known, having tremendous knowledge and unmatched understanding in all fields of science, from cell biology to military technology. His scientific expertise is said to be at least 500 years ahead of his contemporaries. It seems that even in his youth, the scientist was a prodigy already considered a genius, but lacked the skills, funds, and materials to develop his inventions, although that did not stop him from theorizing the creation of Pacifista cyborgs, including their laser weapons back then. This is proven by the fact that Franky was able to recreate the technologies by studying the blueprints Vegapunk left behind on his home island. Regardless, the creations and blueprints that he has left behind are considered invaluable, and any damage inflicted to them is considered a crime. The lasers that are installed into the Pacifista were apparently supposed to be so advanced, that only Vegapunk knew how to create them. It was also stated that the dragons found on Punk Hazard were Vegapunk's own creations. Vegapunk had a deep knowledge and understanding of Devil Fruits, having studied many old texts about them. He was the only known person beside the Five Elders to realize the true nature of Luffy's Devil Fruit after witnessing his awakened form. He discovered exactly how Devil Fruit powers are transferred over to a user, and he was also the scientist behind the method of adding Devil Fruit powers into inanimate objects, such as swords and guns. By using this method, he was able to create a unique blood for his latest creation, the Seraphim, by extracting the Lineage Factor of a Paramecia User, synthesizing it, creating the so-called "Green Blood". He even went as far as having developed a theory about how Devil Fruits came into existence from his knowledge, theorizing that Devil Fruits are the embodiment of what humans desire and could become, which is also the reason why the sea, which he calls "the mother of nature" rejects any Devil Fruit user and makes them unable to swim, as such behavior is loathed by the sea and it considers these wishes to transcend the world people wish to live in as "abnormalities".

Tactical Skills

Vegapunk was very cunning and deceptive when he needed to be, despite York saying he was a terrible actor and liar. For over 20 years, he researched the Void Century while working for the World Government without them noticing. In fact, the only reason the Five Elders were able to discover his treachery was because one of Vegapunk's own satellites betrayed him. Once he found about York's betrayal, Vegapunk (along with Shaka, and Pythagoras) had set up plans to make sure his death would not be in vain and would have the worst consequence for the World Government. Vegapunk was also very skilled at hiding certain functions of some of his devices without others noticing. Likewise, he also planned a possibility to revive himself via a clone should he ever be killed, completely fooling the Five Elders in Egghead. Vegapunk also possessed impressive intuition, often correctly understanding the truth without solid evidence.

Medical Expertise

Vegapunk was an unrivaled medical genius, aided by his immense talents in medical biology including the applications of the Lineage Factor, which gave him great insights into biology and genetics, to the point of being able to perfectly create Cyborgs with partially or fully integrated bodies, create clones, and even out right produce artificial life. He was the one who modified Bartholomew Kuma into a cyborg, and he has produced many Pacifista replicas of him as well, granting them some of the abilities of Kizaru's Devil Fruit in the process. These replicas bleed actual blood, like Kuma himself. However, they lack Kuma's own Devil Fruit abilities. After the two-year timeskip, Sentomaru revealed that the latest Pacifista had been further modified; these were later revealed to be the Seraphim, replicas of the Seven Warlords of the Sea in their youth, albeit with Lunarian traits. As noted by Chopper, Vegapunk also pioneer organ culture, the science of cultivation of either whole organs or parts of organs in vitro. Vegapunk also developed stem cell therapy which he used to cure Bonney of Sapphire Scales which is considered incurable by his contemporary doctors. Perhaps Vegapunk's greatest medical feat is surgically removing his own giant head and part of his brain without killing himself.

Engineering Expertise

Vegapunk was a tremendously talented inventor, engineer and mechanic whose genius has allowed him to specialize and produce the creation of multiple inventions and technology so advanced, that it's been stated that it would take the rest of the world 500 years to keep up with him and his inventions. His skill is great enough to be able to develop a number of cutting-edge technologies, such as Cyborgs and Robots. In his early years, he was responsible for turning his homeland of Karakuri Island into a technological marvel, with the island being known as the "Future Island" for its tech and was responsible for turning a majority of the wildlife on the island into a Cyborg workforce to help build a lot of the tech that the island was known for. As the leading scientist of the World Government and Marines, Vegapunk was responsible for the creation of a lot of the technological advancements that they actively deploy, namely Seastone-covered battleships and equipment, and also various weapons from traditional military weaponry, to living weapons like the Pacifista and the Seraphim. Just like with Karakuri Island, Vegapunk turned the island of Egghead into a "Future Island" with a wide variety of advanced technology stemming from climate altering tech, to holograms and mechanized wildlife, to machines that automatically produce clothing and food, to even a state of the art lab facility built on top of artificially created Sea and Island clouds with advanced security. Like his early blueprints and creations, Vegapunk's many inventions on Egghead are immensely invaluable, with the destruction of any of them being a considerable loss for the World Government. His best invention, the Mother Flame, though incomplete is meant to be a source of unlimited energy which is so technologically advanced only Vegapunk and his satellites can create them.

Oceanography

Via his research, he discovered ways of allowing Marine ships to pass through the Calm Belts without fear of a Sea King attack, by covering the bottom of the ships with Seastone.

Archaeology

Continuing Clover's research to honor his memory, Vegapunk has read and fully memorized every single book that had been rescued from Ohara. He was able to uncover many secrets from the Void Century and read the Poneglyphs which led the Five Elders to order his assassination for knowing too much.

Devil Fruit

Vegapunk ate the Nomi Nomi no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allowed his brain to store an indefinite amount of information and eidetically recall everything he has ever learned. It also caused his brain and head to expand continuously as he acquires new knowledge. While Vegapunk was already a natural genius, the Nomi Nomi no Mi absolutely enhanced his mental efficiency and aptitude for learning and research such as his scientific genius which is unparalleled compared to the rest of the world, making futuristic breakthrough in science and technology by at least five hundred years.

Satellites

Due to splitting himself up into six people, Vegapunk was able to be many times more productive as his satellites are capable of working independently at the same time. The fact that each of his satellites can also be equipped with weapons, vehicles, and technology also made Vegapunk drastically more difficult to handle in combat. The satellites are capable of communicating with each other via an earpiece and may also share senses as Shaka was able to see what was around Lilith while the two of them were in different locations. Necessary bodily functions can be assigned to one satellite, allowing the others to forgo them. Currently, York is tasked with eating, sleeping, urinating, and defecating on behalf of the rest of the satellites. One of the only downsides to Vegapunk splitting himself up into six people, is that the satellites have just as much free will and independent thought as the original Vegapunk, and are more than capable of thinking and doing things for their own self interests. York secretly had the ambition to become a Celestial Dragon, was not only prepared to betray her fellow Vegapunks, but even orchestrate multiple events and leak information directly to the World Government about Vegapunk's research, all in order to have Vegapunk and the other Satellites killed so the World Government would grant her wish of becoming a Celestial Dragon.

Scientific Achievements

The following is a list of the research projects done under the name Vegapunk, and it is unknown for some of them whether it was Vegapunk himself or one of the satellites that is responsible for them.

History

Past
Early Life

Vegapunk was born 65 years ago in the Future Country Baldimore on Karakuri Island. As a child, he designed and built several devices in his lab, including robotic animals. He also had hundreds of other ideas, ranging from weapons to experimenting with cellular structures. He once tried to create an in-ground heating system for the island's people using modified animals as his labor force. Unfortunately, Vegapunk lacked the tools and the funds needed to complete his project, but he was able to touch the people's hearts. At some point by the age of 14, Vegapunk ate the Nomi Nomi no Mi, which caused his brain and head to expand continuously as he acquired new knowledge. 39 years ago, Vegapunk became one of the founding members of the illegal research team, MADS, working alongside Vinsmoke Judge, Caesar Clown, Queen, and Buckingham Stussy. While the other scientists focused on creating weapons, Vegapunk pursued peace-promoting products, like the GP Flowers which earned him the Ibel Peace Prize. This led to the Five Elders inviting Vegapunk to meet them in Mary Geoise. 36 years ago, Vegapunk also discovered the Lineage Factor, and that same year MADS team successfully created a clone of Stussy. 26 years ago, the World Government felt threatened by Vegapunk's discoveries and experiments, especially those tied to Lineage Factor, and ordered his arrest through Borsalino. though Vegapunk brushed off the "arrest" and instead questioned him about the monetary funds he would eventually receive for his research projects, knowing full well that the Marines were in fact interested in having him within their ranks. Borsalino found this amusing and became friends with Vegapunk soon after. MADS was subsequently dissolved, or rather, absorbed, with Vegapunk and Caesar Clown joining the government's research team.

Service To The World Government

After going to work for the World Government, Vegapunk became famous for his Devil Fruit research and for discovering that Seastone can counteract the effects of Devil Fruit on the user. In that same year, Vegapunk met with Clou D. Clover at the entrance to Punk Hazard, with Clover requesting Vegapunk's assistance in researching the Void Century. Due to the heavy risk presented from such a task, Vegapunk denied helping. Upon hearing of the death of Clover's brother as a result of his name, Vegapunk remained adamant with his initial decision, although he agreed to remain silent on the matter. Vegapunk worked with a sample of Kaidou's Lineage Factor, extracted from him when he was captured in Punk Hazard, to replicate his Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu Devil Fruit, although the results were noted to be unsatisfactory. The World Government wanted him to give the fruit to them, but Vegapunk considered it a failure and refused, leaving it on the island of Punk Hazard. At some point, Vegapunk was with Borsalino and while on a trip to deal with a bear attack, encountered a boy named Sentomaru, who had already defeated the bears. Sentomaru revealed he was kicked out of his village and requested a job to Vegapunk. Vegapunk acknowledged the boy's strength and agreed to hire him as his personal bodyguard. Later on, Borsalino agreed to let Vegapunk study the ability of his Pika Pika no Mi for a future project. At one point while working under the World Government, he created a perfect clone of himself to avoid the Government's suspicions should he ever have to leave his laboratory. 22 years ago, Vegapunk would receive news of the Ohara Incident at his lab in Punk Hazard, taking note of Robin's Wanted Poster. Several months later, Vegapunk took a trip to Ohara to pay his respects to the late Professor Clover. He came across the lake in the center of the island filled with books, and the realization that this was the final stand made by Ohara's scholars brought him to tears. Vegapunk noticed a group of giants pulling the books from the lake before being approached by Monkey D. Dragon, who had also come to pay his respects. Dragon explained to him that the giants were from Elbaph, and that they knew the value of the books. Dragon lamented Vegapunk's refusal to join the Freedom Fighters due to lack of resources, but Vegapunk explained that he felt his abilities were put to better use with the World Government. Though he wished to take the books with him back to Punk Hazard, Vegapunk feared that his superiors would hear about the survival of Ohara's library, and so he entrusted them to the giants. Two years later, a clone of Vegapunk later took a secret visit to Elbaph to read all of the rescued books in the Owl Library in order to carry on the work of researching them. There, he met Jaguar D. Saul, who had led the giants in salvaging the books. Four years ago, Vegapunk was leading chemical weapons tests in his lab on Punk Hazard. His former colleague, Caesar Clown, created an extremely powerful chemical weapon. When Vegapunk attempted to dismiss Caesar for his reckless behavior, Caesar retaliated by detonating that weapon, turning Punk Hazard into a wasteland. The island was closed off after this incident while both Dragon Number Thirteen and Dragon Number Twenty-One were also abandoned. Since Vegapunk had been leading the experiments, he was blamed for the incident. Shortly after this event, Vegapunk was transferred to a new facility on Egghead, still under employment of the World Government, around this time Borsalino (promoted to Admiral under the pseudonym of Kizaru), visited him and got a look at Vegapunk's blueprint work for Egghead's construction. At the suggestion of Dragon, Bartholomew Kuma decided to take his daughter Jewelry Bonney to see him in an attempt to cure her Sapphire Scales disease. Vegapunk was surprised by Kuma's sudden appearance, but quickly moved past it. When Kuma asked Vegapunk if he could cure Bonney's disease, Vegapunk confirmed he could indeed cure her, and explained that he would perform a stem cell transplant. Vegapunk was then shocked to learn that Kuma was a Buccaneer after checking his blood, although he had not enough samples to answer Kuma's questions about his heritage. After discovering this fact, Vegapunk offered to waive the expenses for Bonney's transplant, as long as he was allowed to clone Kuma. Kuma was shocked at the offer, but accepted it nonetheless, as Bonney's safety was his top priority, leading to the creation of the Pacifista human weapons. During his time with Kuma, Vegapunk was visited by Borsalino again, which put him on edge as he knew he was there with a Marine fleet to which Kizaru defended himself claiming he was just doing his job. Carrying a Den Den Mushi with Jaygarcia Saturn on the line, he was not fond of his dealings with Kuma or him being used as the model for the Pacifista project; however, he relented on the condition that certain demands be made. The demands were that Kuma must become a Warlord of the Sea, that he must become a human weapon for the government, and that his memories must be erased for total control. These conditions outraged Vegapunk and he argued that these conditions would effectively kill Kuma; however, Kuma agreed with these conditions as it would be the only way he could save Bonney, bringing Vegapunk to tears and leaving Kizaru distraught. Saturn asked Vegapunk how long it would take to cure the Sapphire Scales, to which he stated would be up to half a year and another full year for her to be able to go outside. Hearing this, Saturn decided to make Bonney a hostage and placed her under government watch, until Kuma's free will was completely erased. This angered Vegapunk again, arguing that both Kuma and Bonney would never be able to see each other again. Saturn brushed this off, saying that if this order is violated, Bonney would be made into a slave. While Kuma and Bonney went through with testing, Vegapunk began writing down his weapon ideas with even more ideas flowing through his head, wishing that there were five of him to keep up with his ideas. As the months went on, Vegapunk became close with Kuma and Bonney, eating pizza and partying with them, alongside Kizaru and Sentomaru, when they had the time. Vegapunk would also have Kizaru, Sentomaru, and Kuma help to construct more of the lab. Six months later, Vegapunk happily told Bonney that in one more year she would be able to go out into the sunlight and told Bonney she could come back to the lab after she was cured, with Kuma thanking him. About a year afterwards, Vegapunk had his large head surgically cut off and his brain removed and stored into Punk Records and replaced the top of his head with an apple top head. While Kuma underwent his modifications, Stussy commented on Vegapunk's brain removal, while also pondering on if Kuma's fate of being a human with no will would be worse than a clone with a will, to which he replied that she was human. Kuma questioned what would happen if he lost his free will; Vegapunk answered that it would mean losing human emotions and memories, but ensured Kuma that he would have at least one more year to retain bare minimum of consciousness. Following the incident at Enies Lobby, Vegapunk was at Egghead talking with Kuma about the Pacifista's augmentation going well and asked Kuma if he was aware of the boy who declared war on the World Government, causing Kuma to reveal to Vegapunk that he was Dragon's son. Vegapunk was surprised by this news and mused with Kuma over the similarities Luffy's powers had to Nika. Within the same time frame, Vegapunk managed to split his being into six satellites who shared his brain in order to help with his work. Due to this, the six satellites each gained the memories of Vegapunk's visit of Mary Geoise. While he and most of his Satellites saw the World Nobles' cruelty as horrendous and looked down on them for it, little did they knew at the time that York secretly desired to become a Celestial Dragon herself, even if it meant betraying her peers. During this time, Vegapunk enlisted Kuma's help in researching memories since the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi's ability could make them tangible. With his research on Kizaru's Devil Fruit powers, Vegapunk managed to replicate them and manufacture functional and tangible laser beams that cause damage, becoming the only person in the world with the technological prowess. His attempts to replicate Paramecia Devil Fruits resulted in the creation of Green Blood. Prior to the Summit War of Marineford, when the time came for Vegapunk to perform the final operation on Kuma, he argued with Saturn on implanting a self-destruct switch on Kuma and attempted to reason with Saturn on allowing bare minimum consciousness for him before the operation, but the elder refused. Kuma had overheard this and finished his original agreement with Vegapunk to use the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi's ability to create a copy of his memories to study, Vegapunk then tearfully proceeded with the operation of removing the last of Kuma's free will while various doctors and Sentomaru prayed for him. However, upon Kuma's request, Vegapunk programmed the mission to protect the Thousand Sunny into Kuma's memory banks. Within the same year, Vegapunk created the Seraphim; Pacifista clones of the Seven Warlords of the sea. Three months prior to the Egghead Incident, CP5 investigated Vegapunk for researching the Void Century. Prior to the Levely, Admiral Fujitora met with Vegapunk, and the scientist revealed the Seraphim, which were the culmination of Vegapunk's research into cloning, cyborgs, Devil Fruits, and lunarians. About two weeks prior to the beginning of the Egghead Incident, Vegapunk, Shaka, Pythagoras discovered odd discrepancies in the Mother Flame's energy output. Shaka quickly deduced that the culprit logically must be one of the Vegapunks, and that the three of them were the only ones that had alibis. The three concluded that they would have to continue observing in order to get more information. One week later, Pythagoras revealed that he discovered the culprit to be York, citing that her memories uploaded to Punk Records were invalid, and that the Den Den Mushi recordings of the Mother Flame room were tampered with. Vegapunk was shocked by the news, and immediately assumed it to be Lilith, due to her apparent nature as his "evil". A day later, the Lulusia Kingdom was obliterated through what Vegapunk assumed was an Ancient Weapon. Shaka suggested fleeing Egghead, but Vegapunk reminded him of the World Government's influence over the entire planet, and that escape would be impossible. When Vegapunk explained that their deaths were imminent and likely inevitable, Shaka and Pythagoras fearlessly stated their intentions to join him in his plan to reveal their knowledge on the Void Century to the world. Sometime later, Vegapunk would hide the Broadcast Den Den Mushi within the Iron Giant, pretending it to be nothing when questioned by York. Two days before the beginning of the Egghead Incident, Shaka would assist Vegapunk in his recording, setting up the Den Den Mushi and expressing his frustration in Vegapunk wishing to wait so long to reveal his message. Realizing that their behavior would be perceived as strange by the other Vegapunks, the trio decided the best course of action would be to erase their memories, in order to ensure their plans would remain undiscovered. After doing so, the three read a message that Vegapunk had written just prior and were naturally shocked by the overload of information that they had just forgotten being revealed once again in such a short time.

Final Saga
Egghead Arc

While Vegapunk was working on a warping experiment, it backfired, and he got stuck inside the Iron Giant's armor. Luffy headed his way to help Vegapunk and freed him. Vegapunk then thanked him and recognized him as Dragon's son, knowing he would come to Egghead. However, he ended up flying too high in the air due to his boots and begged for help once more. Vegapunk later explained to the group his background, his satellites and the meaning behind Punk Records. as well as his ultimate goal to have a database everybody had access to. He was, though, confronted by an extremely angry Bonney, who demanded Vegapunk explain his reasons for turning her father into a cyborg, even threatening him with a beam saber she had found earlier. However, the saber attracted a horde of insects, and after she passed out, Vegapunk admitted to Luffy, Chopper, and Jinbe that he did not blame Bonney for hating him, well understanding of her resentment. However, he then added he had something he had wanted to give to her. Vegapunk then excitedly explained to the group his ultimate goal of providing free energy for everybody around the world, mentioning the existence of an "ancient energy" that he believed was the Iron Giant's power source. However, because of his studies about said energy, he was fully aware he had uncovered too much of the past and that the Government wanted him dead, requesting Luffy to take him out to the sea with him and his crew. After Luffy agreed, Vegapunk told them to get to the Labophase, vanishing seconds later himself. It turned out Vegapunk had warped himself into the Labophase, appearing in the Observation Room where the other Satellites and the Straw Hats were observing Luffy's fight against Lucci. He then clarified the true nature of Luffy's Devil Fruit, mentioning that there was no such thing as a "Gomu Gomu no Mi". He marvelously observed Luffy's Gear 5 form and explained to the Straw Hats that this form resembled a god from the ancient texts, who was supposed to be a warrior of liberation who would bring smiles to people, called Nika. Hearing that the Straw Hats never heard of this name, he explained to them that this name had been erased from history, but would always exist as long as people wished for him, concluding that all things were brought into the world with hope, including Devil Fruits. He then shared his theory about the existence of Devil Fruits with the Straw Hats, theorizing that every Devil Fruit was a possibility for human evolution that someone had desired beforehand. He concluded his theory by explaining that those with powers would exist in different dimensions dreamed up by someone else before them, leaving every single Straw Hat speechless at this theory. Vegapunk then went on to explain to the Straw Hats how he was able to replicate Devil Fruits into Artificial Fruits, divulging that he could only so far recreate Zoan Devil Fruits, distancing himself from Caesar's SMILE fruits by saying his process was vastly different and more acceptable than his. He then revealed that he had found a way of replicating Paramecia Devil Fruits by synthesizing the blood from a Paramecia User's Lineage Factor. Vegapunk concluded his explanation by stating that the Seraphim are the culmination of all his ideas, referring to them as "The Strongest Form of Humanity". When Luffy's group later arrived at the Labophase, Vegapunk was chased by a furious Bonney who demanded that he reverse the Pacifista modifications and turn her father back to normal, ignoring his pleas to listen to him. However, Vegapunk confessed that the process was irreversible, but he had a good reason for it. Bonney, cunningly, turned herself into a child to divert Vegapunk's focus and, in a second of his carelessness, turned into a future version of herself and struck at him with Distortion Future. Vegapunk evaded her assault but was then successfully hit with Toshi Tsuki, turning him into a little child, unable to escape her grasp. She then once again demanded to know why Vegapunk took Kuma's personality from him, but Vegapunk once again replied he could not tell her due to a promise with Kuma. Bonney, however, was unsatisfied by this answer and angrily slammed the child-turned Vegapunk on the ground before turning her attention to a mysterious door. Vegapunk warned Bonney not to touch the bubble she had found there, but Bonney dismissed his words, throwing him off the room. Vegapunk was then abducted and imprisoned deep within the Labophase along with the other Cipher Pol agents who had disappeared after their visits to Egghead. He confessed to a CP5 member he had no idea they were locked up down here for so long, and also realized that their imprisonment was connected to his research into the Poneglyphs, which had been leaked to the World Government. Shaka eventually found Vegapunk, but was then shot in the head by York, leaving Vegapunk surprised. Vegapunk became furious and asked her if she was the one who imprisoned the Cipher Pol agents, but York replied that she wanted to be a World Noble. Vegapunk became confused and asked York why she would want to be like them. York laughed in response, further adding that the world only needed one Vegapunk. At some point, Vegapunk was freed from captivity and reunited with Bonney near the PAW room. She then gifted her a sapphire necklace, apparently from Kuma, and clarified to her about his role in Kuma's transformation into a human weapon. Having learned the truth of what had happened, Bonney apologized to Vegapunk and happily accepted his gift. Vegapunk then returned to the Control Room with Bonney, where the Straw Hats and CP0 had gathered together after foiling York's plans. Upon hearing from Stussy that the Marines had surrounded Egghead, Vegapunk asked Nami about her Log Pose while setting up a plan to escape to Elbaph. He planned to use the Vegaforce-01 to fly the Thousand Sunny over the Marine blockade and assigned Lilith to be the robot's pilot. When he mentioned that the robot would fall outside of Egghead's airspace, Franky assured him that a Coup de Burst from the Thousand Sunny would guarantee an escape from the Marines. Since York had put a password on the Frontier Dome preventing anyone from escaping, however, Vegapunk, along with Edison and Atlas, began to crack her code. While continuing to work on cracking the code, Vegapunk was alerted by Usopp that the Marines were beginning their assault. Vegapunk was confused by this, proclaiming that the island's defenses were nigh impenetrable. Upon realization that it was actually Kizaru on the island, Vegapunk felt terrible about Sentomaru having to fight him, and said it was alright for him to flee if he could not bring himself to do it. Sentomaru's defeat caused Vegapunk to break into tears, although he refused to give up on trying to get the barrier down. A moment later, as soon as Kizaru arrived in the Labophase, Rob Lucci attempted to kill Vegapunk amidst the confusion. Stussy, who noticed just in time, quickly stepped in front of Vegapunk and took the attack in his place, promptly collapsing to the ground, but saving Vegapunk's life. Her sacrifice later enabled Vegapunk to successfully crack the password and disable the Frontier Dome's defense system, celebrating alongside Atlas and Edison for doing so. Having done that, Vegapunk then contacted Franky, asking if the Vegaforce-01 had been brought into position, not knowing it had gotten destroyed by Kizaru. Much to everyone's horror, including Vegapunk, Kizaru later appeared in the Control Room to fulfill his mission, but before he could execute it, Kizaru was grabbed by a giant Luffy, much to Vegapunk's surprise. When Atlas said she was going to leave to regain control of the Pacifista, Vegapunk wanted to come with her to save Bonney after finding out she was alive, despite being told that the Marines were after him. He contacted Franky and Sanji of the situation and the two decided to help him. Vegapunk and Atlas then left the Control Room in the Vegatank-08 to go rescue Bonney, with Vegapunk saying he would not leave her to die. Vegapunk entrusted Sanji to rescue Bonney before the tank could reach the Fabiriophase, and the group was successful in recovering her. As the group headed back up to the Labophase, they witnessed Jaygarcia Saturn's arrival. On the way down, Vegapunk requested that Sanji not defend him should he be attacked, to the latter's confusion. Vegapunk stated that his death would likely result in something huge taking place. He then brought up the topic of the One Piece to Sanji, telling him that he hoped the Straws Hats would be the ones to find it, adding even further to Sanji's bewilderment. Kizaru then destroyed the clouds the Vegatank-08 was riding on, which sent it crashing onto the ground. Upon landing, Vegapunk's group was cornered by Saturn. After Bonney tried to attack Saturn and was caught by him, Vegapunk's group tried to rescue her. However, they found themselves unable to move, which Vegapunk speculated was because of Saturn's Devil Fruit ability. They were forced to watch as the Marines raised their weapons to execute Bonney. As Vegapunk was still unable to move, Saturn revealed to Bonney he was the one responsible for giving her and her mother Ginny Sapphire Scales due to a failed experiment. Vegapunk grew furious with Saturn for being the cause of tearing Kuma's family apart and hiding the disease under the guise of a bargaining deal, but Saturn dismissed this claiming he did not bother with the feelings of those beneath him. When a Marine in the area notified Saturn that Kuma himself had arrived at the island, Vegapunk grew shocked as to why. After Kuma punched Saturn, Vegapunk thought to himself on how this was possible as the self-destruct switch he was forced to implant in Kuma would instead shut down his entire body, coming to the conclusion that it must have been a specific aspect of the Buccaneers. Saturn then questioned Vegapunk on how Kuma could move as he had activated the self-destruct command days ago, but Vegapunk did not elaborate further beyond claiming that it was the "power of love". Vegapunk then ordered Atlas to carry Kuma back to the Labophase, but Kizaru intervened. Disappointed about Kizaru's role in all this, Vegapunk spared no kind words to his "friend". After hearing about the oncoming destruction of Egghead from a Buster Call, Vegapunk begged Saturn and Kizaru to call it off, as destroying Egghead would cause severe scientific setbacks. Despite his pleas, his concerns were met with contempt from Saturn, and silence from Kizaru. Saturn then elected to inform Vegapunk that he had ordered the destruction of a vessel carrying Egghead researchers. Vegapunk was horrified at the news, and angrily told Saturn that said researchers had nothing to do with his Void Century research. Saturn once again rejected Vegapunk's concerns, instead telling him that it was his own fault that the current events were transpiring. Moments later, the Buster Call began, and Vegapunk silently watched as his years of research on Egghead were reduced to rubble via bombardment. To make matters worse, Kizaru prevented Vegapunk's allies from escaping while Saturn ordered the Pacifista to shoot them down. Vegapunk watched and remembered dwelling on this specific scenario, citing that the Pacifista may be clones of Kuma, but none of them cared about Bonney or Kuma's friends. Knowing that he could not let the very idea of Kuma attacking Bonney become a reality, Vegapunk quickly ordered Atlas to inform Bonney of her special status in the command hierarchy. Upon learning of this, Bonney ordered the Pacifista to help them all escape Egghead, to which they responded by attacking the Marines. Vegapunk thought about his life decisions while this was occurring, acknowledging that giving Bonney the highest position in the command hierarchy was his single selfish decision in his employment by the World Government. He knew that this would have severe consequences, which came in the form of Saturn stabbing him through the back with one of his legs. Vegapunk collapsed to the ground, and moments later, Bonney came to his side to beg him to leave with them. While this was happening, Luffy arrived back fully reenergized and in his Gear 5 form. Vegapunk weakly told Bonney that Luffy was Nika, the very being that she, Kuma, and many others had been waiting for for hundreds of years. As Vegapunk laid on the ground from his injuries, Bonney told Luffy to avenge him by punching out Saturn, which he followed through on. Bonney then begged for Vegapunk to escape with her along with Atlas and Franky, but Vegapunk revealed to her that his injuries were nearly fatal and made it impossible for him to be moved without risking a worsening condition. Kizaru responded by attempting to shoot a laser at both Bonney and Vegapunk, but it was countered away by Sanji. Vegapunk relented on being forced to reveal Bonney's control over the Pacifista, and begged the Straw Hats to take care of her. While this happened, Luffy ordered Sanji to take Vegapunk away from the chaotic area as Saturn returned, now transformed into his full beast form. As they made their escape, Sanji was kicked away by Kizaru, who then dealt Vegapunk a lethal blow. As his heartbeat flatlined, a pre-recorded message activated within his Lab where he announced to the world that he was going to tell them a certain truth.

Postmortem

Sanji kept hold of Vegapunk's corpse as he and the other Straw Hats headed to the Giant Warrior Pirates' ship in order to escape the island. Following their escape from Egghead, Vegapunk's body was laid somewhere within the giants' ship.

Legacy

Vegapunk's death immediately triggered the airing of his planned broadcast message, which successfully aired across the entire world. During the broadcast, the world's population was told what Vegapunk knew of the Void Century: namely about the Great War between Joy Boy and the First Twenty, and the usage of the Ancient Weapons causing global sea levels to rise 200 meters. Vegapunk also shared that his Mother Flame had been used to power an Ancient Weapon and predicted that the destruction of Lulusia would trigger the same sea level rise; this prediction came to pass shortly before he died and thus vindicated his message. Vegapunk warned the world that it would sink into the sea soon and the Great War had not truly ended so long as the Ancient Weapons still existed. In the climax of his message, Vegapunk shared his belief that whoever found the One Piece would decide the fate of the world. This was shown to invigorate many pirates and further their ambition of finding Gol D. Roger's treasure; members of the Four Emperors' crews were particularly energized. This also caused some Marines to be motivated to find the treasure first before any pirate could. Ultimately though, not all of Vegapunk's message was heard due to the efforts of the Five Elders to find and kill the transmitting Den Den Mushi; the broadcast briefly went offline while Vegapunk was talking about the Clan of D., and permanently ended before its conclusion as Vegapunk was sharing something else about Joy Boy. Despite the death of Vegapunk's main body, his brain and Punk Records remained functional. Shaka, Pythagoras, and Atlas were destroyed, while Edison and Lilith hid their survivals from York by disconnecting from Punk Records. Lilith escaped Egghead with the Straw Hat Pirates and Giant Warrior Pirates, and set sail to Elbaph with them. Edison was able to retrieve Punk Records from York, and the destroyed satellites survived by reconvening into his body, which was reconstructed using spare parts from all of the satellites except York and Lilith. In addition, according to Lilith, she managed to escape with a perfect clone of Vegapunk himself, and has a goal to construct a new laboratory in order to revive him.

Translation And Dub Issues

Summary

In the original Japanese, the names of Vegapunk's satellites are written with kanji which have meanings that correspond with the aspects they embody. For example, Lilith's name is written as 悪(リリス), with a kanji character that means "evil" while the furigana gives the reading Ririsu or "Lilith". In the VIZ translation, these meanings are presented similarly to epithets, such as "Lilith the Evil" and "Shaka the Good". In the FUNimation dub, Vegapunk is given a German accent, a clear reference to Albert Einstein, on whom he is based.

Early Concepts

Summary

Similar to his satellites, Vegapunk had a couple of differing designs before he was formally introduced. One is similar to his final appearance, with the only difference being a lightbulb on his head, rather than the apple he currently has. The other features a fairly different design, with Vegapunk instead wearing a large jacket and having some sort of flat device atop his head.

Trivia

Summary

Vegapunk's appearance with gray hair, a mustache and a large tongue may be inspired by Albert Einstein, particularly the iconic photo of Einstein sticking his tongue out, albeit in a more exaggerated manner. His epithet as being the world's smartest man could also be taken off of Einstein, who was said to be one of the greatest scientists ever to exist due to his many contributions and theories in science. His brain being cut out of his head alludes to Einstein's brain being removed after his death for research. The shape of his cut head may be inspired by the movie poster for the 1983 American black comedy film, The Man with Two Brains. Keeping with this theme, Vegapunk's English voice actor, Kent Williams, portrays him with an exaggerated German accent, which is where Einstein was from. The apple-like lid over Vegapunk's head may be a reference to Isaac Newton and the popular myth of an apple falling on his head, leading to the discovery of gravity. Furthermore, his apple-like head may also be a reference to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from the Bible, in which many media and sources depicted its fruit as an apple. It could also be a reference to the fact in many pieces of media young students would usually give their teacher an apple as a sign of respect. Vegapunk's goal of providing the world with free energy could be a reference to Nikola Tesla, who also wanted to provide free energy to the world. Vegapunk seems to be somewhat themed around astronomical objects, as his main body is known as the "Stella" (Latin for "star") while his being is split into six additional people known as "satellites". The "Vega-" portion of his name may be derived from Vega, the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra. In addition, his verbal tic contains the word "quasar". The reason Vegapunk's satellites are referred to using the kanji for "cat" is because Kaku uses the Japanese idiom "Neko no te mo kari tai" (猫の手も借りたい?) which literally means "I would want to borrow even a hand of a cat" and is commonly used to express that one is extremely busy. The "Ibel Peace Prize" Vegapunk is shown being awarded in his past as a MADS scientist is based on the real life Nobel Peace Prize. The "GP Flowers" scientific achievement that bestowed Vegapunk this award is likely a reference to the famous Flower Power photograph taken during the March on the Pentagon, an event symbolic to the end of the Vietnam War. Before he cut off the top of his head, Vegapunk used to wash his enlarged head by dipping it in a pool of scrubfish. One of Vegapunk's inventions, the DOM Shoes, is a reference to the MS-09 Dom mobile suit, as well as its many variants and successors, from the Gundam franchise. Both the mobile suits and the DOM Shoes share their signature capability to hover/"fly". Vegapunk's favorite foods are apple pie, coffee, and macaroni spaghetti.

He is a major ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.Shaka, also designated as Punk-01 (PUNK-01(パンク ワン), Panku-Wan?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "good". He is a major ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.

Appearance

Summary

Shaka is an average-sized man, standing at about the same height as Sanji. His head was covered by a futuristic metal helmet bearing the number 01 over the face. He wears a very long dark blue coat with yellow patterns; the jacket has the words "Vegapunk 01" written at the bottom, "Caution" written on the left sleeve and two light blue horizontal stripes on the right side. He also worn a pair of very large black DOM shoes that ran all the way up to where his jacket ends, leaving little to no skin exposed. After his body's destruction, Shaka survived by reconvening into Edison's body, who reconstructed the combined Vegapunk with Edison's head, Atlas's left arm, Pythagoras's right arm, and Shaka's torso and legs.

Personality

Summary

Being designated the "good" satellite of Vegapunk, Shaka was extremely reasonable, collected and thoughtful. During Lilith's confrontation with the Straw Hat Pirates, Shaka was shown to be extremely observant of the crew's mannerisms and abilities, and quickly conveyed to Lilith that she had blundered. Shaka did not approve of Lilith looting and pillaging from others, saying such actions are detrimental to a scientist's pride. Although not as antagonistic as Lilith, Shaka was very cautious and careful when facing potential dangers. Even when asking the Straw Hat Pirates for assistance in helping Vegapunk escape, he still immobilized them with DOM shoes until he grew confident enough to trust them. He was loyal to the Stella, the original Vegapunk, believing that it is their duties as his Satellites to ensure his safety, even if at the cost of their lives. Shaka showed a level of fearlessness, immediately agreeing to sacrifice his life with Stella and Pythagoras in helping to record and transmit a broadcast regarding the Void Century.

Relationships

Satellites
Summary

While Vegapunk's satellites all refer to themselves as Vegapunk, they each exemplify only one part of Vegapunk's personality and all have their own wills and desires. Therefore, they are effectively six unique people.

Stella

As the first satellite created by Vegapunk, Shaka had an presumably close relationship with Stella. He would often advise Stella and would in turn follow any recommendations Stella would give, including willing to sacrifice his own life for the greater good of humanity.

Lilith

Because they are directly contrasting counterparts, Shaka and Lilith tended to argue frequently. Shaka usually disapproved of Lilith's impulsive tendencies and voiced his concerns about them in an attempt to rein her in from making complicated situations worse. Shaka's virtuous, contained personality overall tended to greatly annoy Lilith, who often mocked his fellow satellite for his "goody-goody" attitude. Lilith also hated when Shaka started acting as her superior by ordering her around, angrily replying for him to knock it off. Lilith mourned Shaka after his apparent death due to York's betrayal.

Pythagoras

Shaka was often seen working alongside his fellow satellite Pythagoras, implying they had a cordial relationship.

York

While Shaka's relationship with York can be presumed to have been cordial, he was betrayed and shot by her in a surprise attack. Little did York know, Shaka along with Pythagoras and Vegapunk were aware of her betrayal of stealing a portion of the Mother Flame. After the Egghead Incident, he was revived with Edison’s help, and he along with the rest of satellite share their disdain for York that they destroyed all of York’s spare parts that she cannot get revived if she gets killed.

Others
Monkey D Dragon

Shaka is in contact with the Revolutionary Army leader Monkey D. Dragon for unknown reasons. When Shaka predicted that his death was imminent, he called Dragon to inform him of this fact.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being a satellite of Vegapunk, Shaka has likely been a contributor to the genius scientist’s numerous technological developments. Shaka appears to be able to share senses with other satellites, allowing them to know what was going on with Lilith while she was out at sea. Shaka's analytical skills are a boon in combat situations, as they were able to prevent Lilith from foolishly attacking the Straw Hats by quickly pointing out the crew’s capabilities and strategic mindset. Even compared to the other Vegapunks, Shaka is capable of thinking quickly and using his analytical skills effectively as he was the only one to notice changes in the neutron flux and density numbers related to the Mother Flame, surmising one of the Vegapunks was a traitor, something the main Vegapunk body, Stella, wasn't capable of doing so fast.

History

Past

During a visit to Mary Geoise, as a memory of Vegapunk, Shaka experienced the cruelty of the World Nobles. When Shaka, Pythagoras, and Stella discovered odd discrepancies in the Mother Flame's energy output, Shaka quickly deduced that the culprit logically must be one of the Vegapunks, and that the three of them were the only ones that had alibis. The three concluded that they would have to continue observing in order to get more information. One week later, Pythagoras revealed that he had discovered the culprit to be York, citing that her memories uploaded to Punk Records were invalid and that the Den Den Mushi recordings of the Mother Flame room had been tampered with. Shaka added on that he had discovered how someone had deployed a Sea Beast Weapon without authorization. A day later, the Lulusia Kingdom was obliterated through what Vegapunk assumed was an Ancient Weapon. Shaka suggested fleeing Egghead, but Vegapunk reminded him of the World Government's influence over the entire planet, and that escape would be impossible. When Vegapunk explained that their deaths were immanent and likely necessary, Shaka and Pythagoras fearlessly stated their intentions to join him in his plan to reveal their knowledge on the Void Century to the world. A few days later, Shaka assisted Vegapunk in his recording, setting up the Den Den Mushi and expressing his frustration in Vegapunk wishing to wait so long to reveal his message. Realizing that their behaviors would be perceived as strange by the other Vegapunks, the trio decided the best course of action would be to erase their memories, in order to ensure their plans would remain undiscovered. After doing so, the three read a message Vegapunk had written just prior to them, and were naturally shocked by the overload of information that they had just forgotten being revealed once again in such a short time.

Final Saga
Egghead Arc

When Lilith went out to the nearby sea to attack and pillage the Straw Hat Pirates, Shaka called her to question her actions. Shaka stated that Lilith had blundered when confronting the Emperor's crew, as the pirates were capable of instantly attacking her and thus had the advantage despite Lilith surrounding them with the Sea Beast Weapons. Shaka then told Lilith to bring the Straw Hats to them, expressing an interest in the crew. Shaka then contacted Monkey D. Dragon, informing him of his imminent death and wanting Dragon to hear him out. Afterwards, Shaka found Nami, Usopp, Nico Robin, Franky, and Sanji in the laboratory battling S-Shark and told the Seraph to stand down. He asked the Straw Hats what they thought of the island's technology and revealed that it was actually not futuristic, as a similarly advanced society once existed 900 years ago. Shaka then took the entire group inside the laboratory and began talking about the Void Century and its history as well as the Ohara Incident and its aftermath. He then found himself in lengthy conversations with Robin about Ohara's value and danger towards the World Government, theorizing with her why Ohara was destroyed and how it was related to the Void Century. He also mentioned that everyone holding this knowledge was given a metaphorical death sentence by the World Government, much to the shock of the group. He then continued by explaining Professor Clover's background as well as his relationship with both Clover and Dragon and the immediate aftermath of what happened after Ohara was destroyed. When he explained that he visited Ohara shortly after the incident happened, he mentioned giants recovering all the books that were saved and bringing them to Elbaph. He then mentioned a giant covered in bandages who led the group and, on Robin's question, confirmed that it was Jaguar D. Saul. He concluded by confirming that he had read every book retrieved from Ohara, therefore had all the world's mysteries stored inside his brain and continued on researching the world's mysteries on Egghead. He then wanted to show the group something else. From the lab's control room, Shaka showed the group the interactions and conversations Luffy's group was having with the real Vegapunk. When Shaka was informed about CP0's arrival at Egghead, he ordered to let them deliver S-Bear and leave Egghead immediately, but told the other Satellites to prepare for fighting CP0. Shaka heard Rob Lucci's question about the various Cipher Pol agents disappearing from Egghead, but the Satellites denied any knowledge and still refused CP0 entry. When CP0 ignored the order and infiltrated the island, Shaka ordered the researchers and workers to evacuate and Atlas to return to the lab. He also had three Seraphim—S-Shark, S-Hawk, and S-Snake—mobilized and put under Sentomaru's command. As they watched Luffy fight Lucci, Shaka noted that Lucci had awakened his Zoan Devil Fruit but had maintained his personality. Vegapunk then joined the group in the control room and explained his theory about Devil Fruits. Once all of the Straw Hats and the Satellites were safely up in the Labophase, CP0 began cutting off all escape routes from the island. When Lilith suggested fighting CP0 directly, Shaka countered that the Satellites should be willing to sacrifice themselves in order to ensure Stella's safe escape. With Sentomaru incapacitated, Vegapunk decided to contact their secret ally on the island, Stussy. Shaka then agreed that Lilith should escort Vegapunk to the Vegaforce-01. However, the Frontier Dome suddenly deactivated, and although Shaka and Pythagoras managed to restore it, CP0 had infiltrated the Labophase and were attacking the Thousand Sunny. As CP0 approached the lab, Shaka noted that the four Seraphim had taken the initiative and followed the agents up, so he ordered Lilith and Edison, who had left to back up Zoro and Brook, to assume command of the Seraphim. Before the Satellites could arrive, Lucci ordered the Seraphim to destroy the lab. As the Seraphim began attacking, Stussy neutralized Kaku and Lucci; however, she reported that she could not override Lucci's command to the Seraphim. The Straw Hats were amazed that Vegapunk had a spy in the World Government's top intelligence agency, but Shaka admitted that it had not been intentional. After Edison successfully stopped the Seraphim, Stussy bound Kaku and Lucci, and Shaka offered to take her with them, which she accepted. When Luffy was unable to find Jewelry Bonney and Vegapunk, Shaka pointed out that the monitors could see her in Room Nikyu but could not see Vegapunk anywhere. Shaka then reported that they had lost control of the Frontier Dome, so he suggested that the others search for Stella while he worked on restoring control of the dome. After an explosion went off in Building C, Shaka lost contact with Pythagoras, who had been searching in the area, and watched in shock as the location's Cameko was destroyed. Luffy and Shaka then noticed that they were losing communication with the others and Cameko-feeds across the labs. S-Bear and S-Hawk then came to the control room and attacked Zoro, Lucci, and Kaku. Shaka ordered them to stop, but when they ignored him and continued attacking, Luffy moved Shaka to safety. Shaka reasoned that someone like Vegapunk must have given the Seraphim an order and that the whole situation was orchestrated to kill all of them. When Lucci and Kaku insisted on being set free so they could help fight the Seraphim, Shaka questioned what CP0's mission was, and Lucci freely admitted that they sought to assassinate Vegapunk and the Satellites. Shaka also reasoned that Lucci planned to pay back Stussy for her betrayal, which Lucci confirmed. Despite the danger, Shaka willingly put the decision in Luffy's hands but reiterated that Luffy needed to protect Stella, and Luffy decided to free the agents. As the four struggled to fight the two Seraphim, Zoro compared their resiliency to King, and Shaka was surprised to learn that the Beasts Pirates had a lunarian member. After confirming to the others that the Seraphim had been augmented with lunarian blood, Shaka went off on his own to locate Stella. In the old Devil Fruit Reasearch Lab on the basement floor, Shaka discovered the missing Cipher Pol agents and Stella; however, before he could free them, Shaka was shot in the head by York. Shaka's consciousness was later placed into Edison's body, alongside Atlas and Pythagoras, and they later contacted Haredas for an unspecified reason.

Trivia

Summary

Shaka's name may be based on the Japanese name for Gautama Buddha, the historical Buddha. Shaka's name may also be based on 1246 Chaka, the name of an asteroid located within the Solar System's asteroid belt. The asteroid's name is based on that of Shaka, the founder and ruler of the former Zulu Kingdom. The helmet that Shaka wears is similar to that of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of the French techno pop musician duo Daft Punk. Shaka's favorite food is milk porridge.

Vegapunk/Lilith

Introduction

Lilith, also designated as Punk-02 (PUNK-02(パンク ツー), Panku-Tsū?), is one of six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "evil". She is a major ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc, and ultimately the only Vegapunk to escape with them after the Egghead Incident.

Appearance

Summary

Lilith has the appearance of a young woman with wild ginger hair and purple eyes, with her hair covering her right eye. She wears a pink full-body jumpsuit that bears her designation of Punk-02 on the left breast; she also wears a purple hooded jacket with sleeves that are baggy around the forearm area, purple DOM shoes, black gloves, and a red aviator helmet. Like the other satellites, she wears an earpiece and antenna on her left ear which enables communication with Vegapunk's other manifestations.

Gallery

Personality

Summary

Being designated the "evil" satellite of Vegapunk, Lilith is the manifestation of Vegapunk's ruthless and malevolent traits, thus coming off as a very deceptive and untrustworthy individual. She utilizes her technology and weaponry to steal from voyagers, chiefly pirates, who trespass on Egghead, justifying this to Shaka as necessary for the sake of keeping Vegapunk's research operational. She also thought nothing of handing the Straw Hat Pirates to CP0, being fully aware that Rob Lucci was an assassin. Her "evil" nature made the original Vegapunk suspect her of betraying them until her name was cleared. Lilith possesses a rash attitude and often acts impulsively, annoyed and derisively. For this reason, she is one of the most outgoingly combative and daring of the satellites, being eager to confront any perceived enemies directly and violently, although she has moments of clarity and will pull back in situations she cannot win. Lilith also hates being ordered around, especially by Shaka, her "good" counterpart whose exemplary behavior tends to constantly get under her skin. Despite being "evil", Lilith actually has a compassionate side. She cares about her fellow satellites, as she wanted to fight CP0 to avenge Atlas. She also was deeply worried when Edison almost got killed by S-Shark's laser and relieved when Sanji saved him in time. She mourned the deaths of Stella and her fellow satellites, although she quickly got over it after crying for a bit knowing that all the other satellites can still be “alive”. She uses the first-person pronoun washi (わし?), which is an old-fashioned term usually associated with men in period fiction, such as samurai. She also uses stereotypical old fashioned speech patterns such as the copula ja (じゃ?).

Relationships

Satellites
Summary

While Vegapunk's satellites all refer to themselves as Vegapunk, they each exemplify only one portion of Vegapunk's personality, and all have their own wills and desires and are therefore effectively six unique people. While this normally isn't an issue as Vegapunk is supposed to synchronize his brain with all of his satellites via Punk Records, York decided to betray Vegapunk and her fellow satellites in an effort to become a World Noble. Once her treachery was revealed, she was effectively treated as an enemy by Vegapunk and the other satellites. After escaping Egghead, Lilith revealed her fellow Satellite are technically alive.

Shaka

She and Shaka have a rivalry toward each other due to being the "Evil" and "Good" Vegapunk respectively. However, Lilith cared for Shaka, mourning his "death" due to York's betrayal.

Edison

Lilith cares for Edison, as seen when she mourned for his "death" after York's betrayal even though he was merely injured.

Pythagoras

Lilith cared for Pythagoras, mourning his "death" due to York's betrayal.

York

Once York's betrayal was revealed, Lilith became furious at her, referring to her as a traitor.

Straw Hat Pirates

Initially, Lilith didn't care about the infamous pirate crew and only 'saved' them from drowning so she can plunder them. While she agrees to bring them to Egghead under Shaka's instructions and was happy to explain the technologic of the island, she remained hostile to them. But once she learned the World Government had come to assassinate her and the other Vegapunks, she accepted them as allies. She became more friendly with them and work alongside to against the Seraphim, and later Jaygarcia Saturn. Despite being the only Vegapunk they manage to save, Lilith didn't blame them and told them they hadn't failed because they saved her. When she saw that Luffy remained depressed over his perceived failure, she further attempted to reassure them further that everyone had actually survived, despite appearances.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being one of six manifestations of the genius scientist Vegapunk, Lilith has contributed to his numerous technological advances and breakthroughs. Despite the technology and weaponry at her disposal, Lilith was cautioned by Shaka that she was not equipped to take on Roronoa Zoro and Nico Robin, two members of an Emperor's crew with bounties around 1 billion, in combat.

Medical Expertise

As one of Vegapunk's satellites, Lilith has inherited the latter's medical genius with her being confident in being able to revive Vegapunk through a cloning method, as well as restore Bartholomew Kuma's cognitive functions. However, she admitted that such feats would require extensive laboratory equipment to achieve, as she plans to build a new lab on Elbaph due to Egghead's scientific laboratories and equipment having been either destroyed by the Buster Call or reclaimed by the government along with York.

Engineering Expertise

Lilith has made heavy use of mechas and cybernetically enhanced animals to aid her in combat. She pilots a giant mecha called the Vegaforce-01, which is extremely large to the point of being able to carry the Thousand Sunny in its hands. The Vega Force is able to move underwater and unleash explosions when it punches. Additionally, Lilith has power over Sea Beasts that she has turned into cyborgs. These Sea Beasts are equipped with numerous weapons, with an example being the Mecha-Shark having a torpedo launcher in its mouth. This army of cyborg creatures allows Lilith to easily surround and overwhelm ships sailing the sea, enabling her to loot them. However, she has had issues with achieving programming to completely override the organic urges of the creatures, which limits her ability to have them do exactly what she wants; Shaka himself would also note that any equipment, weaponry and modified Sea Beasts at Lilith's disposal would be useless against a swordsman of Zoro's caliber.

Weapons

Lilith wields a large futuristic-looking gun, called a Bubble Gun (バブルガン, Baburugan?) because it shoots bubbles that are capable of deflecting any attacks. These bubbles, called Bubble Balls (バブルボール, Baburubōru?), are made of a special material containing sea energy, meaning they also serve as a weakness for Devil Fruit users.

History

Past

During a visit to Mary Geoise, as a memory of Vegapunk, Lilith experienced the cruelty of the World Nobles.

Final Saga
Egghead Arc

When the Straw Hat Pirates drew near to Egghead on the Thousand Sunny, the Mecha-Shark went to attack them. With the shark's primal urges overriding its programming and threatening to completely annihilate the crew's possessions, Lilith went underwater in the Vegaforce-01 and took it down before lifting the Sunny back above water. Lilith then exited the Vega Force and introduced herself as Dr. Vegapunk, to general confusion. Lilith informed the pirates that she did not rescue them, but rather spared them from the Mecha-Shark so she could rob them of their valuables. She summoned her army of weaponized Sea Beasts to surround the Straw Hats, ordering them to surrender to her their valued possessions at once, but then received a call from fellow satellite Shaka who informed her she had blundered in her antagonism of the pirates, pointing out that they were poised to target and overwhelm her if they retaliate much to Lilith's dismay, embarrassed that she overlooked something that could have easily led to her downfall. Roronoa Zoro told Lilith to play nice, and Shaka told his counterpart to bring the pirates to him as he has interest with the Straw Hats. Though not very pleased about this slipped opportunity, Lilith complied with Shaka's request and used Vegaforce-01 to transport the Sunny towards Egghead into the upper part of the island, the research laboratory. She then led the Straw Hats, minus Brook and Zoro, into the lab while explaining its technological specialties. She did this, however, purposefully as she made contact with Edison and she, alongside Edison and Pythagoras, unleashed the Seraphim S-Shark onto the Straw Hats to test its fight capabilities and qualities. However, their test run was soon ended by Shaka, displeasing especially Lilith who was furious at his second interference in her meddlings. When Pythagoras informed Shaka that a World Government ship with CP0 onboard was arriving at Egghead, Lilith suggested handing the pirates over to Rob Lucci. However, when Lucci suspiciously pointed out several World Government ships went missing lately, Lilith annoyingly and impulsively told the group to dock at Egghead and see for themselves, ignoring Pythagoras who was against her impulsiveness. When both the CP0-squad and the Seraphim effectively landed on Egghead, Lilith was excited at the prospect of fighting them, wanting to avenge Atlas who got damaged previously by Lucci. She then mentioned taking everyone to the port with Vegaforce-01 after Vegapunk's secret ally confirmed their support, and when both CP0 and the Seraphim landed on the Labophase, Lilith made her way out alongside Edison to issue a personal command to stop the Seraphim from attacking the Labophase, later being able to successfully make her way outside, but is then targeted by S-Hawk before she can issue a command. However, the attack is blocked by Zoro, and everybody is saved by Edison who commands the Seraphim to stop. Lilith would later meet up with everybody inside the Laboratory when the main Vegapunk body, Stella, went missing. She would pair up with Usopp, Franky and York, searching inside Tower C. Inside the tower, the group would end up finding Pythagoras' body without his head, having been separated by a previous explosion. Lilith grew impatient with Pythagoras when he freaked out about who attacked him before she turned to York who was turned into stone by S-Snake. Lilith tried to stop her, however, she had to jump off the bridge alongside Pythagoras, Franky and Usopp when they were shot by S-Snake. She then brushed off Franky's suggestion to directly fight the Seraphim after effortlessly trying to contact Shaka, stating they could not beat S-Snake. Lilith later pulled out her bubble gun, revealing a significant weakness the Seraphim have which her bubble gum could exploit: Sea energy. However, her bubbles barely missed S-Snake who seducingly tricked Franky into releasing a bubble he held onto her from her and then used her Devil Fruit powers to petrify both Lilith and Usopp, The petrification was later lifted as Lilith was seen having joined the other surviving satellites, Vegapunk and the Straw Hats after they had restrained the traitor York. In order to help their escape from the Marines that had surrounded Egghead, Lilith came along with Luffy, Franky and Jewelry Bonney to both the Thousand Sunny and Vegaforce-01, with Vegapunk having ordered Lilith specifically to pilot Vegaforce-01. When the Vegaforce-01 was destroyed, Franky had Lilith pilot his General Franky instead. Back on the Thousand Sunny, Brook devised a plan to use his Devil fruit ability to freeze the Island Clouds and glide across back to the rear entrance. While Lilith was initially pleased with and praised the plan, she questioned how he would stop the ship at the end, to which Brook had no answer, and she slapped and worried they would slide off the island. When Brook was called by Nami again, and stated how the ship was still sliding through the rear entrance, Lilith slapped him again stating they would hit the barrier if the ship did not stop, she then got in touch with Nami to tell her something. The Thousand Sunny was then caught before it slid off the island due to Usopp's Midori Boshi: Take Jave Rin, saving Lilith and Brook. While saved and regrouped with Usopp, Lilith was still annoyed at Brook and kicked him. When Jaygarcia Saturn reached the group's location and attacked Robin, Lilith joined the Straw Hats to fight him off, shooting the elder to no avail. After he brushed them aside, Lilith and the others noticed the clouds extending outward. Lilith noted that while they may be able to land into the sea, they would still be surrounded by the enemy ships stationed. Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro then caught up to the ship's location to Lilith's and the others horror but was countered from attacking due to Zoro and Jinbe. Eventually, Zoro abandoned the fight with Nusjuro and made his way back onto the ship, although Nusjuro remained in the way of escape. Lilith denied all requests to leave at that moment, citing the fact that any interference by Nusjuro would ruin their trajectory and likely make them fall to their deaths. Before she could continue, Atlas suddenly punched her into the ground, and then snapped a switch behind her head. This resulted in Lilith being forcefully disconnected from Punk Records, leading York to believe she was deceased. Atlas then used the moment to sacrifice herself so that the crew could escape, taking the unconscious Lilith with them. Sometime later, Lilith would be transported to the Giants' ship, where she would eventually regain consciousness. She didn't take long to recognize the environment and was met with apologies from the various Straw Hats who were watching over her about their apparent failure to save the other Vegapunks, although she responded by stating she had already known about the circumstances, to their confusion. Lilith promptly burst into tears from the news but dried them just as quickly as she realized she now felt hunger, a new feeling associated with her being disconnected from York. Lilith was led to meet with Luffy, who was under the impression that he had failed the Stella and was eating massive amounts of food while crying. Lilith was annoyed by this, but relented and moved to explain that Luffy had in fact not failed at all. She explained that the other Vegapunks were only "dead", at least physically, and that they were still technically alive, to everyone's shock. The news was taken well by Luffy, who promptly perked back up and met with his Giant friends, who restarted the earlier party they had to cancel. Lilith joined in on the party with her new friends, celebrating their success.

Elbaph Arc

After the party, Lilith noticed that six of the Straw Hats were missing and joined the other Straw Hats's efforts to find them, but were unsuccessful. She later listened to Robin reading from the Newspaper about the Egghead Incident as well as the Giants's story about the "Accursed Prince" Loki. Soon after that, the group reached Elbaph together with the Giant Warrior Pirates. Lilith later together with Bonney beamingly watched the rainbow created by the Giant Warrior Pirates with the help of a painter and listened to Dorry and Brogy explaining about the three levels of Elbaph, as the group then finally made it to Dorry and Brogy's home village, as they also finally reunited with Luffy's group there. Lilith then marveled at the technological wonders the Giants had combined when Dorry and Brogy explained that Luffy's group arrived to them with a "Svarr", and later accompanied the group when Robin decided to reunite with Saul. After the reunion, Lilith formally introduced herself to Saul as "Vegapunk", leaving Saul confused but she assured him she would explain to him later why Vegapunk was a female. Then, she asked Jinbe to fetch her the box he saved from Egghead, as she explained it contained a perfect clone of Vegapunk of the time when he visited Elbaph 20 years ago and that Vegapunk created this clone so the World Government wouldn't notice him when he left his laboratory and thus reducing suspicions about Vegapunk himself. She then revealed her plans of staying at Elbaph and creating a new laboratory and upon Bonney's question if she would cure Kuma, Lilith informed her that she planned on doing so. Following a few shenanigans involving the Straw Hats within the Owl Library, Lilith departed from the main group with Bonney, the pair intent on making themselves a home on Elbaph. Much later, the two managed to get themselves lost in the Sun World, but at the same time, located a strange laboratory built into a tree. They eventually met up with Ripley, who had been giving Franky a tour of Elbaph's Adam Tree. While conversing with their friends, Lilith revealed her estimations of the laboratory's age to be at least 3000 years, which shocked Franky. Lilith then declared her intention of settling down in the lab, but was interrupted from further talking upon the arrival of a storm MMA. Fortunately, the group was able to escape with Ripley, giving Franky the opportunity to shoot down the MMA. In a stroke of luck, the group happened upon the Giant Warrior Pirates, who had just crashed into the forest. Lilith remained silent as Shepherd Sommers revealed over a broadcast that the God's Knights had taken Elbaph's children hostage.

Vegapunk/Pythagoras

Introduction

Pythagoras, also designated as Punk-04 (PUNK-04(パンク フォー), Panku-Fō?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "wisdom". He is an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.Pythagoras, also designated as Punk-04 (PUNK-04(パンク フォー), Panku-Fō?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "wisdom". He is an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.

Appearance

Summary

Pythagoras is a large mechanical being. His head was a sphere with a turn-key protruding from the top and a space in the front containing his eyes which always appeared drowsy; his head could detach from the main body and move independently with a set of retractable arms and legs. Pythagoras' main body was metallic, with the top part being red and the bottom cream. His designation, Punk-04, was printed on his left breast and the kanji for "wisdom" (知?) was printed on the center of its chest. His arms, hands, and legs were composed of bendable metal rods. After his original body's destruction, Pythagoras survived by reconvening into Edison's body, who reconstructed the combined Vegapunk with Edison's head, Atlas's left arm, Pythagoras's right arm, and Shaka's torso and legs.

Personality

Summary

Being Vegapunk's "wisdom" satellite, Pythagoras has shown to be calm and highly interested in observing the performances of Vegapunk's inventions. He is devoted to recording data from these tests and examining the potential scientific implications and can grow very excited when situations arise that provide exceptional data. Pythagoras also tends to resort to peaceful solutions, as he was trying to reason with the CP0 agents that were sent to kill Vegapunk and his satellites, trying to create excuses for them not to land on Egghead. He even advised Lilith not to make things worse when she got angry at their repeated requests for permission to dock, knowing impulsive reactions could lead to them just coming to the island anyway. In addition, he also tended to keep good relations between the satellites as he was consistently trying to mediate between Lilith and Shaka, when they were arguing about CP0's breach into the Labophase and if they should respond peacefully or violently. But even outside of conflicts, Pythagoras always tries to keep his fellow satellites safe. When Vegapunk was recording a message about the truth of the world alongside Shaka and Pythagoras, Pythagoras always worries about Vegapunk burning his tongue on a Vegacoffee and scolding Shaka for purposefully letting it happen, seemingly being seriously worried about Vegapunk burning his tongue.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being a satellite of Vegapunk, Pythagoras has been a contributor to the genius scientist's numerous technological developments. Pythagoras is extremely intelligent, being capable of drawing a large number of theories and conclusions just by witnessing Vegapunk's inventions in action; when observing one of the Seraphim in combat, Pythagoras quickly made observations regarding potential Lineage Factor traits. It also seems to be part of Pythagoras' duties to compile and analyze data.

History

Past

During a visit to Mary Geoise, as a memory of Vegapunk, Pythagoras experienced the cruelty of the World Nobles. When Pythagoras, Shaka, and Stella discovered odd discrepancies in the Mother Flame's energy output, Shaka deduced that the culprit logically must be one of the Vegapunks, and that the three of them were the only ones that had alibis. The three concluded that they would have to continue observing in order to get more information. One week later, Pythagoras revealed that he had discovered the culprit to be York, citing that her memories uploaded to Punk Records were invalid, and that the Den Den Mushi recordings of the Mother Flame room were tampered with. Pythagoras also stated that he had discovered a White Den Den Mushi, leading to the conclusion that York had been hiding her transmissions. A day later, the Lulusia Kingdom was obliterated through what Vegapunk assumed was an Ancient Weapon, and he had Pythagoras monitor changes in the sea level and any transmissions leaving Egghead. Shaka suggested fleeing the island, but Vegapunk reminded him of the World Government's influence over the entire planet, and that escape would be impossible. When Vegapunk explained that their deaths were immanent and likely necessary, Shaka and Pythagoras fearlessly stated their intentions to join him in his plan to reveal their knowledge on the Void Century to the world. A few days later, Pythagoras assisted Vegapunk in his recording.

Final Saga
Egghead Arc

When some of the Straw Hat Pirates entered Vegapunk's laboratory, they were attacked by the Seraphim S-Shark and Pythagoras watched S-Shark's performance, constantly analyzing and evaluating the Seraphim's performance as well as the battle's progress, alongside Lilith and Edison before Shaka arrived to stop it. When CP0 requested permission to dock at Egghead, Pythagoras promptly went to Shaka, fearing that the World Government agents would find out about the pirates on their island and as a possible result, the following punishment by the World Government. Lilith offered to simply hand over the pirates, but Shaka ordered the agents to be denied landing and prepare for battle because the government agents would not simply accept the refusal. Pythagoras tried to reason with the group, stating that their delivery of S-Bear would be appreciated but they could not let them dock, knowing fully well that they were there to kill them, even advising Lilith not to make things work by provoking them. He later watched the Sea Beast Weapons devour their ship, concluding they must have used the Seraphim's powers to reach the island. After CP0 had been subdued, Pythagoras went to look for the missing Vegapunk Stella on Shaka's orders. While he was searching for the Stella, Pythagoras was approached from behind by S-Snake, and an explosion went off in the laboratory, which he survived by detaching his head from his body. He then met up with Usopp, Franky, Lilith, and York who went there to investigate the explosion. Usopp aimed at him, so Pythagoras explained to them that he is his head. Before he can say that S-Snake is an enemy, he witnessed her turn York into stone. S-Snake then fires a beam at them, throwing them off the platform. Lilith held Pythagoras and used her DOM shoes to land safely. Pythagoras panicked when Lilith was unable to contact Shaka. The four managed to get back on the platform. Pythagoras praised Lilith for weakening S-Snake using a Bubble Gun. In response, S-Snake fires another beam at them, but they managed to dodge it. After S-Snake petrified the three, Pythagoras got mad and asked her why she did it and who ordered her, but she just stepped on his head and caused it to explode. Although his body was destroyed, Pythagoras survived, and reconvened into Edison's body alongside Shaka and Atlas.

Vegapunk/Atlas

Introduction

Atlas, also designated as Punk-05 (PUNK-05(パンク ファイブ), Panku-Faibu?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his emotions of frustrations and stress which was relieved through "violence". She is an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.Atlas, also designated as Punk-05 (PUNK-05(パンク ファイブ), Panku-Faibu?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his emotions of frustrations and stress which was relieved through "violence". She is an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates during the Egghead Arc.

Appearance

Summary

Atlas is an extremely large girl, appearing to be as tall as Kaidou according to Luffy, with a young appearance. She had floppy downward ears, blue eyes and short curly hair that was white on the left and pink on the right; she had a very long curl of hair on each side of her head that ran down to her belly. She had a long, bushy tail on her abdomen. She wore a short pink dress with her number on it as well as a downward-pointing arrow on the front. She also wore pink DOM shoes, brown gloves with white sleeves attached, an earpiece enabling communication with the other satellites, and a large red jetpack with a red-and-white checkered pattern around the middle of the engines on her back. After her body's destruction, Atlas survived by reconvening into Edison's body, who reconstructed the combined Vegapunk with Edison's head, Atlas' left arm, Pythagoras's right arm, and Shaka's torso and legs. She seemed to be at least partially mechanical, as her face cracked and emitted smoke when damaged by a punch. She, alongside the other satellites, was confirmed to be fully mechanical upon her reconstruction.

Personality

Summary

Being designated the "violence" satellite of Vegapunk, Atlas has a short temper and is prone to reckless violence upon getting angry, which has been shown to occur if someone attacks her or if people show an inability to utilize her inventions successfully. She is very talkative and will gladly give detailed explanations on the inner workings of her inventions. She is quite interested in the question of the definition of reality, and though she has a firm view on the matter, she thinks other people need to decide the answer for themselves. She uses the first person pronoun ore (おれ?), which is typically considered masculine or aggressive, befitting her violent behavior.

Following the Egghead Incident, Atlas and the other Satellites showed their disdain towards York for her betrayal. They get rid of all of York's spare parts just so she will not be revived if she is killed.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being a satellite of Vegapunk, Atlas has been a contributor to the genius scientist’s numerous technological developments. Atlas seems to carry out a human's basic need to relieve their stress and frustrations, and also possibly, physical workouts on behalf of the other Vegapunks, which she fulfills by attacking holograms. Befitting her large size, Atlas possesses significant strength, as she was able to punch Luffy and send him slamming into a wall with great force, leaving him with bruises. She also possesses great durability, being barely affected by a normal punch from Luffy. Her body made a metallic clanging sound when Luffy struck it, meaning she may wear armor or have cyborg modifications. She has good physical strength, demonstrated when she lifted and carried the immobile Bartholomew Kuma. According to her, she is capable of changing her mask at will and replace whatever part of her gets damaged . She can accomplish this using various spare parts stored somewhere within Punk Records. Atlas is also capable of self-destructing herself as a last resort.

Engineering Expertise

As one of Vegapunk's satellites, Atlas has access to numerous futuristic equipment and weapons that she and the other satellites have developed. Her gloves, which are called Light-Pressure Gloves (光圧グローブ, Kōatsu Gurōbu?), allow her to interact with light as though it is tangible. This will cause the holograms on Egghead to react to her actions as though they were real, such as when she punched a dragon hologram and it recoiled. The jetpack on her back enables her to fly through the air.

Techniques

Digestion Punch (腹ごなしパンチ, Haragonashi Panchi?): A move Atlas uses after York has digested and relieved herself on behalf of the other Satellites. Ultra Mighty Punch (ウルトラ マイティ パンチ, Urutora Maiti Panchi?): Atlas winds up her arm by spinning it multiple times before unleashing a powerful punch. Atlas first attempted to use this technique against Rob Lucci but was interrupted before she could throw the punch.

History

Past

During a visit to Mary Geoise, as a memory of Vegapunk, Atlas experienced the cruelty of the World Nobles.

Final Saga
Egghead Arc

Atlas encountered Monkey D. Luffy, Tony Tony Chopper, Jinbe, and Jewelry Bonney as they were exploring a portion of Egghead's surface and interacting with the illusory holograms. Thinking she was a hologram, Luffy punched Atlas which caused her to attack back in return. The pirates then came across the Automatic Cooking Machine, and Atlas explained how it worked, as well as showing the power of her Light-Pressure Gloves, before introducing herself to the group as Dr. Vegapunk. After the group had had their fill, Atlas left them, returning to her job as being violent, confusing the group. After York had eaten and relieved herself on the other Satellites' behalf, Atlas threw a "Digestion Punch" at an unseen holographic opponent. When the CP0 agents infiltrated the island, Atlas was the first of all the Vegapunks to confront them, and immediately rushed into battle, despite the fact that her opponent outnumbered her. Rob Lucci counterattacked with Rokuogan, severely damaging Atlas and knocking her to the floor. While Luffy fought Lucci, Jinbe carried Atlas away, intending to take her to Vegapunk for repairs. S-Snake directed Jinbe and Chopper to the Vacuum Rocket, in which they loaded Atlas and Bonney. Once Luffy rejoined them, they were launched up into the Labophase. While the other Satellites and the Straw Hats handled the CP0 and Seraphim threats, Atlas underwent repairs. Upon completion, she joined the others in searching for Stella, who had gone missing. She searched inside the lab alongside Robin and Chopper for Vegapunk, until she remembered a long-forgotten lab where she suspected the Stella to be, leading Robin and Chopper towards the lab. Atlas later rejoined with the rest of the surviving satellites, Vegapunk and the Straw Hats after they had captured the traitor York. After finding out that York had put a password on the Frontier Dome, she along with Vegapunk and Edison worked together to attempt cracking the password, being able to crack it successfully, with Atlas rubbing it under York's nose, much to the latter's annoyance. Atlas was later horrified when Kizaru appeared in the Control Room and later more surprised when Kizaru was grabbed by a giant Luffy. While Luffy dealt with Kizaru, Atlas wanted to leave the Control Room to regain control of the Pacifista, with Vegapunk wanting to come with her to save Bonney. After the two left in the Vegatank-08 and picked up both Franky and Sanji, Atlas gave new orders for the Pacifista to target the Marine ships. The group was able to find and rescue Bonney, but they later noticed that the Pacifistas had stopped their attack on the Marines under Jaygarcia Saturn's command. As Atlas' group drove back up to the Labophase and witnessed Saturn's arrival on the island, Kizaru shot the clouds they were riding on and sent them back down. Vegatank-08 crashed upon landing, which left the group in front of Saturn. When Atlas' group saw Bonney being grabbed by Saturn, they tried to save her, but found themselves unable to move from some sort of power. They watched as the Marines raised their weapons to execute Bonney, and when a worn out Luffy asked for food to replenish his strength, she reiterated that she still couldn't move. Just as Bartholomew Kuma had arrived and attacked Saturn, the group was freed from Saturn's power, and Vegapunk instructed Atlas to carry Kuma over to the Labophase. Along with Franky and Bonney, they attempted to use the Vacuum Rocket to get to the Labophase, but Kizaru used his Devil Fruit power to break open the tube and send them falling down. Saturn then ordered to have the Pacifista fire at them. Vegapunk then called Atlas, telling her to relay the counter measure for the Pacifista to Bonney with it being revealed that she had primary authority of them over the Five Elders, with this in effect, the Pacifista targeted their lasers at the Marines. Saturn then furiously stabbed through Vegapunk's chest and ordered Kizaru to kill them, Kizaru obliged and shot multiple beams at the group and Atlas, but before he could kill Kuma and Bonney, Luffy in his Gear 5th form punched Kizaru away. Luffy then transformed the ground rubbery saving Atlas and the others from the ground's impact. After Luffy punched Saturn through various buildings for stabbing Vegapunk, Atlas carried Kuma on her back and told Bonney to escape with the hoover boot function, Kizaru then attempted to shoot Bonney and Vegapunk but it was countered away by Sanji, Atlas and Franky then proceeded to escape with Bonney and Kuma to the northeast shore. As Atlas and the others made their escape, the Giant Warrior Pirates arrived and prevented Tosa from killing Bonney, the captains Dorry and Brogy inquired on who they were explaining that they were looking for the Straw Hat Pirates and would protect their allies. The captains then had their crewmates take Atlas, Kuma, Bonney, and Franky back to their ship. After the Vice Admirals, Red King, Pomsky, and Guillotine that blocked the path were subdued due to Franky and Bonney's efforts, Atlas and the others were confronted by Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro. Luckily for Atlas, Sanji had arrived at the moment, kicking Nusjuro and drawing his attention away. Unfortunately for Sanji, Nusjuro quickly recovered and attacked Sanji in his beast form, resulting in Sanji dropping Vegapunk's body. Atlas managed to catch it just in time as the fight continued. As Nusjuro jumped to the Labophase , Atlas and Sanji waited for Luffy, Dorry and Brogy near the ship of the Giant Warrior Pirates. As Luffy and the giants arrives, Atlas boarded the ship with them. After Mars started attack the ship, Atlas moved Kuma and Vegapunk to a safer place on the ship. Atlas volunteered to go and check why Usopp's group is late. As she flew to the Labophase communicated with Lilith the fact that York was monitoring them and that something had to be done. Up in the Labophase, Nusjuro had been blocking the Straw Hats attempts to escape via Coup de Burst. Lilith informed her allies that any attempts to get past him without a distraction would result in them being knocked off course, and to presumably fall to their deaths. Before she could continue, Atlas made an appearance, punching Lilith into the ground, and disconnecting her from Punk Records. While she was unconscious, Lilith snapped her neck back into place, before ordering the Straw Hats to quickly take off. She then used her jetpack to fly toward Nusjuro, losing an arm from him in the process, but also giving her allies the critical time needed to escape. After a short fight, Nusjuro easily defeated Atlas, but realized that she had been a distraction all along. While smiling at her success in helping her allies get away, Atlas violently exploded. Despite her body's destruction, Atlas survived, and reconvened into Edison's body alongside Shaka and Pythagoras.

Atlas' initial design lacked her jetpack. She instead had a cape of some sort, as well as a helmet with goggles, similar to Lilith's pair.

Trivia

Summary

Atlas' namesake may be based on Atlas, the Titan from Greek mythology who is well-known for being forced to carry the heavens. Atlas' namesake may also be based on Atlas, the name of one of the Earth moon's craters named after the mythological Titan. This trait is shared with fellow satellites Edison and Pythagoras. Additionally, Atlas' name may also be based on Atlas, one of the moons orbiting around the planet Saturn. During Atlas' initial appearance, "Punk 06" was erroneously drawn on her outfit. Atlas' design, as with other elements of Egghead, is visually similar to and likely takes inspiration from Astro Boy. Atlas' favorite food is Japanese curry rice.

Vegapunk/York

Introduction

York, also designated as Punk-06 (PUNK-06(パンク シックス), Panku-Shikkusu?), is one of the six satellites of Dr. Vegapunk, embodying his aspect of "greed". She acted as an ally to the Straw Hat Pirates at first, but was later revealed to be a traitor responsible for instigating the Egghead Incident and many of the events prior during the Egghead Arc. Appearance

Summary

York is a young-looking woman of incredible size, standing twice the height of Brook. She has long and wavy blonde hair, aqua eyes, and patches of freckles under her eyes. Her mouth is very broad, and she has rosy, chubby cheeks. She wears a purple top cut off just below her breasts with her designation Punk-06 written on the front. She also wears an orange hooded jacket over her top, a pair of purple bikini bottoms, black gloves, orange DOM shoes with cyan and black-striped socks that go up past her knees, an earpiece enabling communication with the other satellites, and a pair of red goggles on her forehead. When she eats a lot, she becomes morbidly obese but can instantly return to her original figure after going to the bathroom.

Personality

Summary

Being designated the "greed" satellite of Vegapunk, York is a very gluttonous and lazy individual. Her primary task seems to be to eat, sleep, and relieve herself for the other satellites so they can perform their own duties unimpeded. She seems to have a vapid personality with her head in the clouds, rarely speaking except for yawning or remarking about sleeping or eating, but wantonly approached a dangerous Seraphim because she found it cute. However, this was later shown to be a façade. In truth, York is a highly selfish and arrogant schemer who possesses lofty ambitions, willing to betray her fellow Vegapunks solely for the chance to become a World Noble. She believes that only one Vegapunk is necessary in the world and is not against eliminating her peers if needed, betraying the Satellites' purpose of ensuring Stella's safety even at the cost of their lives. York also shows no signs of mercy or remorse should casualties arise due to her actions, as she was willing to accept all of them should it serve her ultimate goal. York's desire to become a Celestial Dragon despite seeing their abhorrently immoral behavior shows her own disregard for humanity for the sake of power and status, thus reflecting her nature as a manifestation of Vegapunk's greed, albeit in a far darker manner than originally depicted. When defeated, York is shown to be quite cowardly, spiteful and insensitive, and will use any opportunity to gloat about herself or mock others.

While Vegapunk's satellites all refer to themselves as Vegapunk, they each exemplify only one portion of Vegapunk's personality, and all have their own wills and desires and are therefore effectively six unique people. While York initially appeared to be a helpful contributor to the other satellites experiments, she secretly plotted their demises as part of her scheme to become a World Noble, believing that the world only needed one Vegapunk. Once her treachery was revealed, she was effectively treated as an enemy by Vegapunk and the other satellites. Following the Egghead Incident, the other satellites have shown disdain for York, to the point of destroying her spare parts so she cannot be revived if she is killed.

Five Elders

In order to achieve her dream of becoming a World Noble, York cooperated with the Five Elders in exchange for said position, offering them her scientific skills and accesses such as the Mother Flame and Punk Records. While aghast at first when she saw the monstrous Itsumade that is Marcus Mars, she worked diligently with him in order to silence Stella's prerecorded broadcast, and even had to scold him for attacking too recklessly around the area. She became worried that the Elders may not elevate her to a Celestial Dragon if the broadcast could not be stopped in time, and upon figuring out where it was coming from, she swiftly reported it to them, feeling relieved that they stopped it in time. Likewise, the Elders see her as valuable due to her access to Punk Records and capability to manufacture the Mother Flame, thus would gladly grant her the position of Celestial Dragon and personally partook the mission to rescue her from the Straw Hat Pirates. After the Egghead Incident, where Jaygarcia Saturn was executed by Imu, Saturn's replacement, Figarland Garling, declared York to be his direct subordinate.

Abilities And Powers

Summary

Being a satellite of Vegapunk, York has likely been a contributor to the genius scientist’s numerous technological developments. She is responsible for eating, sleeping and defecating on behalf of all the other satellites. As such, she consumes large quantities of food to the degree of attaining a BMI of 600 (20 times the amount considered obese), expels the waste, and sleeps for their sakes, doing so multiple times per day, but this does not seem to negatively affect her body. In spite of her rather passive role as a scientist, York is very cunning, deceptive, manipulative and skilled at keeping a low profile, having orchestrated most of the incidents that have happened during the Egghead Arc without ever arousing suspicion of herself or being detected by either Vegapunk or the other satellites. This includes prior, arc-leading events such as contacting the Five Elders about Vegapunk's history research or kidnapping several Cipher Pol agents multiple times, occurrences even Vegapunk admitted he was completely unaware of. However, it is later revealed Stella, Shaka, and Pythagoras did discover her treachery a week prior to the Egghead Incident, and didn't take any action against her because it would not stop the World Government from killing them. York is capable of replicating the Mother Flame, which makes her valuable to the World Government.

Weapons

York is a skilled gunwoman, having shot Shaka in the head with a simple, ordinary pistol (albeit a very large one, befitting her size) and from a considerable range. After being freed by Mars, York wielded a bazooka that could fire lasers that cause explosions.

History

Past

During a visit to Mary Geoise, as a memory of Vegapunk, York experienced the cruelty of the World Nobles. Whereas the other Vegapunks looked down on the Nobles' actions as despicable, York desired to become one of them. Three months before the Egghead Incident, York contacted the Five Elders and leaked information that Vegapunk was conducting forbidden research on the Void Century. While dispatched Cipher Pol agents never found evidence of illegal research, York used the opportunity to abduct said agents before they could leave Egghead and report their findings, keeping them locked underground in the old laboratory. This served to increase the World Government's suspicion that Vegapunk was indeed rebelling against them. At a later date, York secretly disconnected from the other satellites and delivered a sample of the Mother Flame to the Five Elders. Two weeks later, the Lulusia Kingdom was destroyed by one of the Ancient Weapons, powered up by York's sample.

Final Saga
Egghead Arc

As Edison and Pythagoras were working and needed to attend to bodily functions, York ate, went to the bathroom, and slept on their behalf, allowing them to keep working without a break. Summoned with the rest of the satellites to the control room, York continued eating while wondering if something fun would happen, but she promptly fell asleep again. After CP0's and the Seraphim's attacks on the lab were quelled, York, having deduced she had been betrayed by the World Government, snuck down to the Seraphim and gave them new orders: for the four of them to kill everyone else, except her, Stella, and the captured Cipher Pol agents, and for S-Snake to temporarily petrify her to dispel any suspicion of her, while also ordering S-Snake to protect a certain part of the lab. Around this time, York locked the Frontier Dome with a password to impede anyone from escaping. Afterwards, York returned to the control room and joined in the search for Stella with the rest of the satellites and the Straw Hats. Alongside Lilith, Usopp, and Franky, York went to the third floor of Building C, where they found that Pythagoras had been attacked by S-Snake. As part of her plan, York "carelessly" approached S-Snake and allowed herself to get caught by the latter's petrification abilities. S-Snake then kicked her aside and attacked the rest of the search group, who were forced down the building and, as a result, became separated from York. Shortly afterwards, York was unpetrified by S-Snake while no one was looking and secretly followed Shaka to Vegapunk's prison. She then shot Shaka in the head with a pistol as he tried to free Vegapunk, and revealed herself as the traitor to the latter, proclaiming that she would be the only Vegapunk from now on, as well as a future World Noble. Throughout the rest of the night, York would use the Seraphim to engage the Straw Hat Pirates for her. However, York was proven to be outmatched by the Straw Hat Pirates and their allies, who subdued and chained her to the ground while Usopp arranged a call between her and the Five Elders by the next morning. While on the call, York agreed to construct another Mother Flame for the Five Elders, so long as they did not harm her or destroy her lab, as well make her a World Noble. After the Elders agreed to her terms, York then broke down her composure, hysterically begging to be rescued from the Straw Hats. After being assaulted by Nami, York gloated that nobody could escape the lab as long as the Frontier Dome was active, having admitted to encrypting its access with a passcode beforehand. Despite her claim, Vegapunk, Edison, and Atlas managed to crack the code, much to her anger. As the Straw Hats and remaining satellites made their escape from Egghead, they left York behind in the Labophase. She was eventually found by Marcus Mars, who asked her for the location of the room where Vegapunk's broadcast was coming from. After being freed from her shackles, York and Mars made their way further into the lab. Upon locating the room where Vegapunk made his recording, York was horrified when Mars used an energy beam in an attempt to stop the broadcast. York immediately warned Mars that such destruction carried heavy risks, as many valuable and potentially explosive objects were present in the lab. During her explanation, Mars noticed a "voice" far above, leading him to discover that the broadcasting Den Den Mushi they were looking for was up in Punk Records. York then informed Mars of the appearance of the Den Den Mushi, before sending him on his way upward. When this Den Den Mushi was discovered to be a decoy, Mars returned to York, who struggled to think of where Vegapunk would have hidden the real one. While listening to the broadcast, York was shocked to learn that Vegapunk knew that a sample of the Mother Flame was stolen and used to destroy the Lulusia Kingdom, but was confused about how, as she had disconnected from the other Vegapunk satellites prior. After piecing together that Vegapunk likely already knew how the government would respond to his supposed betrayal, York contacted the Five Elders and informed them that she had discovered where the broadcasting Den Den Mushi was coming from; the Iron Giant Emet. Once the Five Elders attacked Emet and ended the broadcast, York fell to her knees in relief. With Emet seemingly defeated, the Five Elders asked York for the whereabouts of the remaining Vegapunk satellites. Using Punk Records, she informed them that only Lilith and Atlas remained active and gave out their locations. Upon seeing both Atlas and Lilith disconnect from Punk Records, York (believing them to be dead) gleefully celebrated, proclaiming herself to be the sole Vegapunk, unaware that Lilith had successfully escaped Egghead with the Straw Hats. However, she would soon be confused by the presence of Island Clouds still being produced at a high rate from the Cloud Plant, as a result of Edison's actions. Realizing that the clouds were causing the Labophase to disconnect from Egghead, York quickly fired her laser bazooka at the mechanism that linked Punk Records to the rest of the Labophase. With the Labophase now separated, York could only helplessly watch as Punk Records floated away into the sky.

Anime And Manga Differences

Summary

In Chapter 1078, York had arrived at the basement where Vegapunk was imprisoned and revealed herself to be the traitor. When this plotline continued in Chapter 1089, York was being held captive by the Straw Hats without any explanation for what happened. The anime shows that York had intended to shoot Vegapunk, but was stopped when Robin arrived and used her Devil Fruit power to restrain York, which led to Vegapunk being released.

Trivia

Summary

The kanji used for York's name (欲 yoku) is nominally translated not just to "greed", but also "Desire" in general. This can be considered as a tie-back to the failure of Lilith to control Mecha-Shark's primal desire. The kanji is also used to describe three interrelated concepts of attachment and desire in Buddhism: Chanda, Kama, and Kamacchanda. Additionally, in Christianity, the kanji is applied to the Japanese words for two of the seven deadly sins: Lust (色欲(しきよく), shikiyoku?) and Greed (強欲(ごうよく), gōyoku?). York's name may be based on the Cape York meteorite, a large iron meteorite that fell thousands of years ago and landed on Cape York, the southern cape of Greenland. York's favorite food is hamburgers.
