History

Elbaph Arc

When the Straw Hat Pirates attempted to escape from the Land of Gods, Hilmungardr and its fellow “guardians” intercepted them. In the ensuing fight, Hilmungardr battled against Monkey D. Luffy, although it stood no chance, to the horror of the Sun God.

Trivia

Hilmungardr seems to be based on the Jörmungandr in Norse Mythology.
- The switch from “Jör” (ヨル, Yoru?) to “Hil” (ヒル, Hiru?) is likely a pun on the Japanese words for “night” (夜, yoru?) and “day” (昼, hiru?).
The stripes along Hilmungardr’s back resemble those on Nola and Kashigami, two similarly giant snakes.
