Introduction

"Knight of the Sea" Jinbe is the helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates and one of the Senior Officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. He is the tenth member of the crew and the ninth to join, doing so during the Wano Country Arc. Jinbe is a whale shark fish-man and a powerful master of Fish-Man Karate. His dream is to fulfill his former captain Fisher Tiger's dying wish of coexistence and equality between humans and fish-men. He was a member of the Sun Pirates, eventually becoming its second captain after the death of their original captain, Tiger.

He eventually became one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, though he resigned during the Summit War of Marineford. Vegapunk later cloned Jinbe as one of the Seraphim, S-Shark, to replace the Warlords. Prior to and amidst said war, Jinbe befriended Monkey D. Luffy, and two years later allied with him and his crew to prevent the New Fish-Man Pirates' coup d'état against the Ryugu Kingdom's Neptune Royal Family. Luffy thereafter invited him to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but Jinbe held it off until severing ties with Big Mom during the Whole Cake Island Arc.

After staying behind in Totto Land to protect the Sun Pirates from Big Mom's wrath, Jinbe returned to the Straw Hats during the Wano Country Arc, officially announcing his status as a member of the crew. He first gained a bounty of 76,000,000 due to him being a member of the Sun Pirates. It was later increased to 250,000,000 after Jinbe became the new captain of the Sun Pirates before it was frozen after he joined the Seven Warlords. Upon resigning his position as a Warlord at the Summit War of Marineford, his bounty was reinstated at 438,000,000. Following the Raid on Onigashima, his bounty was increased to 1,100,000,000.

Appearance

Jinbe is a large blue whale shark fish-man and the current tallest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. He has a stocky build similar to that of a sumo wrestler and a face that is commonly associated with various Japanese demons such as the oni. His yellow eyebrows and sideburns are distinctly shaped like those found on such demons, in addition to a bulb-like nose and an angular lower lip pointing upwards. He has a lightning-shaped scar that can be seen from his left sideburn and reaching over his left eye which he obtained sometime between Otohime's assassination and meeting Ace. He also possesses two tusk-like conical lower fangs associated with Oni as well; the rest of his teeth from the upper and lower rows are pretty much the same, albeit much smaller.

He also has a severe underbite, which makes room for his huge fangs. He has long, two-toned black hair, with two long stripes, colored gold in the manga and white in the anime, coming from the roots over his forehead and trailing down the back, a topknot, and tuft of hair on his chin with a slight green hue. This topknot did not exist during his time as a member of the Sun Pirates, instead his shorter and flowing black hair trails off halfway to a light color concentrated at the back of his head. He kept his chin clean-shaven before joining the Sun Pirates, after which it gradually grew out over time. His hands and feet are also webbed, typical for a fish-man, and his limbs that are somewhat thin in comparison with his enormous girth.

His gills (which are pale and pinkish in color) are in between his shoulders and neck. Under his pale red coat (which he swaps for a black one two years later), he appears to be wearing a Coral colored traditional Japanese clothing covered all over with black and white square-shaped patterns with the black and white layers alternating each other (beginning with the black outline from the edge) and ending with a dark square at the middle of each and every one of them. He also ties this attire up with a purple obi like a ribbon around his waist. Jinbe is often seen wearing different traditional kimono of varying patterns: he wore a karakusa and later a floral design during his time as a member of the Sun Pirates; he wore square designs during his debut and a plain one after the Summit War of Marineford. Four years ago, when fighting against Ace, he wore a black gi instead with fish designs on either side of the chest, and a red sash with a tanto tied to it.

Two years after the war, while waiting for Luffy at the Sea Forest, his kimono has leaf-patterns. During Caribou's cover story, he is seen in another one patterned with flowers. For footwear, he appears to wear simple geta on his webbed feet. His Sun Pirates tattoo is on the middle of his chest. During the Whole Cake Island Arc, his kimono is yellow and has a Jolly Roger design arranged like stripes.

Additionally, he is also wearing an orange-colored coat. In the Wano Country Arc, his kimono is yellow with large orange and white diamonds patterned on it, a red sash, and his coat has a wave design, colored a dark purple that becomes progressively lighter and finally white at the ends of the sleeves and bottom. Like everyone else participating in the Raid on Onigashima, Kin'emon briefly gave Jinbe a Beasts Pirates disguise. After leaving Wano, Jinbe wore a black kimono with white skull patterns as well purple belt. He also wore a pink and green robe with flower patterns.

In the Egghead Arc, Jinbe wears a hooded pink Hawaiian shirt with an orange and yellow floral pattern, a pair of shorts, an earpiece, and a pair of orange DOM shoes. During the Elbaph Arc, Jinbe is gifted with Viking style attire made by Gerd. His outfit consists of a thick short-sleeved shirt, with a large fur cloak, a pair of boots, a pair of metal wristbands and a decorative weapon strapped to his back with a large leather belt. It also consists of large decorative kilt and a leather belt with a unique decorative serpentine design on the front. Jinbe's hairstyle is also slightly changed to include two long braids which reach all the way to his shoulders. He wore a Neptune Army uniform while he was serving as a soldier and was often seen smoking a pipe back then. During Otohime's funeral, Jinbe wore a suit. In SBS Volume 63, Oda draws the Seven Warlords of the Sea as children. Jinbe as a child is seen with blonde hair wearing a tattered gi practicing his Fish-Man Karate. He already had a black belt at this age. He briefly returns to his childhood self early in the Egghead Arc thanks to Jewelry Bonney's Devil Fruit powers, albeit retaining the scar over his eye.

Jinbe/Personality And Relationships

Introduction

Personality

Jinbe is a fish-man of great pride and honor. He is known to the World Government as a pirate-hating pirate, possibly due to the actions of the pirates in Fish-Man Island, kidnapping fish-men and merfolk to sell them as slaves. However, he has great respect for Whitebeard and his crew as he sees them as a completely different story. Because of what Whitebeard had done for his homeland, Fish-Man Island, he understands the damage a war between the World Government and Whitebeard would cause. He knows that places like his home, which are protected by simply being part of Whitebeard's territory, would suffer the most should Whitebeard lose the war. Also, despite originally hating pirates, he did not spare a second thought of becoming one in order to aid his brethren Fisher Tiger. Because of his honor, Jinbe is very respectful and considerate to the people he serves under. When asked to join the Straw Hat Pirates, Jinbe declined due to still being affiliated with Big Mom and could only join after he left her crew. Jinbe also desired consent from his crew, the Sun Pirates, in order to join the Straw Hats, showing Jinbe is very considering towards his now former crew members' feelings. However, despite wishing to settle things with Big Mom with honor and respect, after Jinbe saw her Roulette, he correctly deduced that it was rigged to kill him and his crew and chose to silently revolt instead. However, once Jinbe confronted Big Mom again, he personally declared his intentions to leave her crew in front of her guests and crew members to ensure it was official.

Honor And Humility

Despite his pride, Jinbe appears to put his priorities and principles over his honor and is not above retreating from an otherwise unfinished battle (despite being shamed or openly mocked by an opponent) if it was for the sake of the greater good. He also does not seem to hesitate from encouraging others to do likewise for a similar cause, as seen when he pleaded and managed to convince Luffy to prioritize Ace's safety first over avenging his brother's loss against Blackbeard. Jinbe has also displayed great humility regarding his personal strength and status, a trait most unique among the Seven Warlords of the Sea. This was made apparent by his willingness to even lose his status for his refusal to fight against the Whitebeard Pirates. Also, unlike his former crewmate Arlong, the fact that he is willing to aid a human (Whitebeard) as well as team up with others separates him from the other fish-men. Whereas Arlong would never dream of such a thing (even Nami's recruitment into his crew was near slavery), Jinbe proves to be able to treat some humans as equals and also acknowledge when he owes one a debt. While he is a fish-man with great emotional control, he is empathetic and understanding of the pains of others, such as being brought to tears when Luffy broke down from losing his brother in front of him after he had awoken from the battle at Marineford. Jinbe is also capable of crying aloud when someone dear to him is lost, such as Ace and Tiger.

Humor

Although Jinbe is normally calm and collected most of the time, he does have a humorous side similar to Zoro. When he saw Shirahoshi outside of her room, he was immediately shocked wondering why she was outside and then became even more shocked seeing an injured Hachi. When Luffy paid little attention to Jinbe's story about what happened during the last two years, Jinbe bemoaned to the rest of the crew commenting on what it is like having Luffy as a captain. He is also not above laughing when something amuses him, as when Judge was yelling at Luffy about all the perceived "flaws" Sanji has that Luffy mistook as compliments, Jinbe busted into laughter, commenting he was going to have fun with his new crew.

Intelligence

His personality in the past dramatically contrasts with the apparently tame temper in the present. In a flashback showing a battle between the Sun Pirates and Marines, Jinbe was shown to exhibit excessive brutality to enemies that even made Arlong ask him to stop. He seems to be a no-nonsense person and appears to be quite passive at times. Though he did not agree with Arlong's thinking that humans always looked down on fish-men, he noticed that they always seemed to be afraid of them. After asking a former human slave named Koala why that is, she said it was because they did not know much about them.

Jinbe stated that the unknown was scary and remembered Otohime talking about how fish-men do not know anything about humans. Jinbe also adamantly believes that true strength should come from hard work and experience, as shown when he reprimanded Gecko Moria for implanting the shadows of others into himself in order to increase his strength, stating that all he really did was get bigger, and when he referred to the power that Hody Jones received from strength-enhancing pills as "fake power". He can, however, see potential within those who use such cheap methods, as when he told Moria to grow stronger after defeating him. Due to his years as both a pirate and a soldier, Jinbe is a very perceptive and strategic man. He was able to deduce that when they tried to escape Impel Down, Magellan had all the Marine ships stationed outside the prison, knowing the prisoners would need a ship in order to escape.

This also makes Jinbe very well-aware of the danger around him, as when Big Mom would allow him to leave her crew so long as he spun her Roulette, Jinbe correctly deduced it was rigged to kill him no matter where he landed and instead chose to revolt instead and ally with Capone Bege to ensure his and his allies' survival. Originally, Jinbe was doubtful of Otohime's ideals, thinking that they did not mean anything. He even openly stated that he did not care about her petition. However, after listening to Fisher Tiger's speech about peace, Jinbe grew supportive of Otohime and even admitted about the trouble the Sun Pirates caused her and joined the Seven Warlords of the Sea to support her cause. He was even willing to hide the body of Otohime's supposed assassin to prevent all her hard work from being destroyed.

His life experiences and interactions with people as an orphan, soldier, and pirate gave Jinbe incredible wisdom, having become a supporter of Otohime's ideology in order to promote racial harmony, which most have considered impossible. When Ace died protecting Luffy, Jinbe was one of the few to truly empathize and understand Luffy's pain, having faced a similar past experience with his sworn brother Tiger's death. Thus, Jinbe had managed to successfully convince Luffy to stop lamenting his inability to save Ace by reminding him of his bonds with his crewmates. Jinbe is also the first to notice the potential menace posed by Hody Jones and his executives, due to understanding how their upbringing being influenced by Arlong's racism and their prejudice towards humans are far greater and more extreme than Arlong's due to the fact they are willing to attack fellow fish-men for interacting with humans. When Luffy decided to stop Hody's plans, Jinbe wanted Luffy to do so not as a violent pirate but as a selfless hero in order to regain Fish-Man Island's trust in humanity. Out of sympathy, Jinbe also convinced Shirahoshi not to regret her decision to not expose Hody's murder of her mother to honor Otohime's memory. From what he vaguely learned from Praline about how her mother executed all her past subordinates who tried to leave her crew, Jinbe correctly deduced that Big Mom would never allow him and his crew to leave the Big Mom Pirates alive. When Pedro sacrificed himself to allow the Sanji Retrieval Team to escape from Big Mom, Jinbe convinced Brook, Chopper, and Carrot to put aside their mourning and focused on escaping Totto Land to honor Pedro's resolve.

Fascination With Others

Jinbe shows an interest in observing his crewmates' behaviors such as Sanji rushing to help a damsel in distress which he refers to as his "lady senses" is tingling in the Wano Country Arc.

Kindness And Selflessness

Jinbe shares the same perspective as Vivi on responsibilities. When Luffy asked Jinbe to join the Straw Hats, Jinbe refused, saying that there are still things that he has to do. Jinbe's decision also resembles Vivi's when he also asked Luffy to let him join his crew, if they meet again in the future. According to Neptune, Jinbe tends to take on too much responsibility and should learn not to. Jinbe states that he does not really care who the boss is of his crew despite his leadership skills so long as they can protect the crew, as shown when he allowed the Sun Pirates to work under Big Mom for their protection.

Also, he only seems to follow his leader as long as they earn his respect and worth as a captain, as seen with Tiger and Luffy. While having a conversation with Ace in Impel Down, Jinbe says he does not lose hope even when a situation says otherwise believing a miracle will happen. This eventually became true when Luffy reached his cell to rescue Ace (although he arrived shortly after Ace was escorted to Marineford). Jinbe states he will not protect a stranger if they do not earn his respect. As stated by his friend Hack, Jinbe's dream is for there to be friendship between humans and fish-men. Jinbe is also completely selfless, having lived his entire life helping his fellow fish-men and merfolk in any way he can. This earned him immense respect from other fish-men such as the members of the Sun Pirates. Despite Jinbe's desire to join the Straw Hats, Jinbe personally asked the Sun Pirates' permission to join, showing Jinbe cares for the opinion of his crew before himself. Part of the reason why Jinbe refused to spin Big Mom's roulette was due to the fact that the lives of his own crewmates would also be sacrificed in addition to his own. Furthermore, despite having the chance to escape Totto Land, Jinbe chose to stay behind with his former crew to ensure they all escape, unwilling to leave any of them behind.

Willpower

Jinbe has shown considerable grit, courage and determination in moments where others, even the rest of his crew, would be overcome by emotion. A notable example of his unwavering grit was when he was able to steel his nerve in the face of Big Mom's Soul Pocus, claiming he had no reason to fear her as a mere Emperor when he intended to serve under Luffy, the future Pirate King. Jinbe is also capable of accepting the sacrifices of allies and making a hard decision in the moment rather than lingering in despair and denial. This can be seen when he pushed Luffy to move past mourning Ace and instead focus on the friends he still had, and when he was able to take initiative after the sacrifices of Pedro and Atlas while the rest of the crew were mourning their deaths.

Relationships

Straw Hat Pirates
Monkey D Luffy

He was quite impressed by Luffy's recklessness of breaking into Impel Down in an attempt to save just one life (Ace's), a feat that not even Whitebeard had done. This makes him one of the very few pirates outside of Whitebeard's crew whom Jinbe respects. His respect for Luffy grew as they made their way out of Impel Down to save Ace in Marineford. Even over the two-year time skip, Jinbe has been continuously talking about the young Straw Hat captain to the other Sun Pirates, without even realizing it. He also seems to feel gratitude and guilt for Luffy's defeat of Arlong.

Upon learning that Luffy is the Revolutionary Dragon's son, Jinbe did not show much surprise. During the battle of Marineford, Jinbe was shown to be just as dedicated to Luffy's well-being and safety as he was to Ace's. The reason is shown in a flashback where Ace asks Jinbe to watch over Luffy if he were to die, and Jinbe responds by stating he will only protect those he cares for. He is later seen saving Luffy from Akainu's magma attack and escaping with him from Marineford thanks to Trafalgar Law. After Luffy woke up from his coma two weeks later on Amazon Lily, Jinbe was looking after him and saved him from his self-pity and self-inflicting injuries by telling him about the people he can still protect.

This makes Luffy realize he has not lost everything, and that he still has his crew. As for Luffy himself, Jinbe's respect seems to be reciprocated, since the Straw Hat captain was seen explaining to his crewmates that he only managed to come back alive from the great war two years ago due to the fish-man's protection prior to the timeskip. Also, while Jinbe began his talk about how he set Arlong into East Blue, Luffy pretty much stayed quiet and allowed Jinbe to explain himself before jumping to conclusions (although he fell asleep early into the story). Luffy even agreed to Jinbe's plan of making Luffy a hero even though Luffy does not want to be a hero only because he is Jinbe's friend. After the battle in Gyoncorde Plaza, Jinbe offers to donate his blood to Luffy, saying that the law of Fish-Man Island which forbid fish-men to donate blood to human does not affect him because he is a pirate.

A conscious Luffy then asks Jinbe to join his crew. While he turned down the offer, he said that once he completed his unfinished task, he would meet Luffy again and then Luffy could ask him again. Later, in the Whole Cake Island Arc, Jinbe would later save Luffy and Nami from being tortured by Charlotte Opera and free them from their captivity. When questioned about Big Mom, he stated that he decided to resolve his unfinished business with her by rebelling against her and aiding the Straw Hat Pirates. He also managed to get Luffy to work alongside Capone Bege and the Fire Tank Pirates, even though he was feeling aggressive towards them for attempting to kill his friend, Pekoms.

As such, Jinbe is one of the few people who can talk reason into Luffy, even making him forgo his usual recklessness and stick to an actual plan, something none of Luffy's other crew members have been capable of doing. During the wedding ceremony, Jinbe personally told Big Mom of his official resignation from her crew to join the Straw Hats, which left Big Mom furious and Luffy overjoyed at his declaration. When his former crew was in danger, Jinbe told the Straw Hats that he had to defend them. Before he disembarked, Luffy made him promise not to die so he would join the rest of the crew at Wano. Jinbe agreed to his new captain's terms and promised to return to their side as he joined his former crew in battle. He ultimately kept his promise arriving in Wano in the nick of time to save the alliance from one of the Beasts Pirates' battleships, and was warmly welcomed into the crew by Luffy. When he learned what Luffy wanted to accomplish after he became the Pirate King, Jinbe was shocked but then burst out into laughter saying he willingly joined a crew with such a troublesome captain, so it was his problem now, showing his support in Luffy's dream. Prior to joining the crew, Jinbe politely addressed Luffy as "Luffy-Kun" out of respect. By the time he reunited with him on Whole Cake Island, he started to call him Luffy, having grown casual enough around him to call him that.

Roronoa Zoro

Although they have not interacted as much, Jinbe gets along with Zoro, who also told Jinbe to finish his business first before joining, showing he is considerate towards his honor. He is still confused at seeing Zoro and Sanji bickering and competing with each other nonstop, especially during combat, and tends to be curious as to the reason of their bickering. During the Egghead Incident, Jinbe was sent to retrieve Zoro who was busy fighting Rob Lucci, so the crew could escape from Egghead before it was too late. When the two later got back to the Thousand Sunny, Jinbe would help Zoro stop Nusjuro from attacking it.

Nami

After he learned of her past, Jinbe felt ashamed of what Arlong had done to Nami's village and that he did nothing about it so much so that he feared what Nami have thought of him initially. After telling the history of Fish-Man Island's discrimination, Jinbe stated that he was willing to accept any punishment, but Nami told him she had no hatred against him or the fish-man race as a whole (just Arlong), much to his overwhelming tears of joy. She also showed her support of Jinbe joining the Straw Hat Pirates. Like the rest of the crew, she was overjoyed when he was revealed to be alive and officially joined the Straw Hats during the Raid on Onigashima. Also like the other members of the crew, Jinbe fears Nami when she is angry and even assumed she has Supreme King Haki when first seeing her in that state. During the Whole Cake Island Arc, Nami was saved by Jinbe before one of Big Mom's children could torture her. Jinbe also protected Nami from the guards in Big Mom's palace until they were found by Chopper and the others. When disrupting the wedding ceremony, Nami was amazed when Jinbe boldly offers back the sake cup that signified his pledge of loyalty in front of Big Mom to symbolize his departure from her crew in order to join the Straw Hats.

Usopp

At first, Usopp was afraid of Jinbe due to him being Arlong's former crew member and for being a former Warlord but changed his opinion after learning he was friends with Luffy. After getting to know him, Usopp came to be amazed by Jinbe's strength and attitude. Like with Luffy, he encouraged him to join the crew while calling him Boss Jinbe.

Sanji

While Sanji in particular chastised Jinbe for allowing Arlong to destroy Nami's childhood (with Hatchan agreeing), he had put aside his resentment after Nami relieved Jinbe of any blame as he was not at fault. Both Jinbe and Sanji worked together to defeat the New Fish-Man Pirates and were shown to be a great team as they took down Wadatsumi. Afterwards, Sanji seems to have given up his resentment, as he later showed his consent to have Jinbe join the crew and agreed to let him finish his business till he joins. He is surprisingly curious about Zoro and Sanji bickering during their fight with the New Fishman Pirates. They reunited during the Whole Cake Island Arc with Jinbe assisting Sanji in escaping his arranged wedding with Pudding and helping save his family from the Big Mom Pirates. After the crew had a chance to escape with the assistance of the Sun Pirates, Sanji wished Jinbe well as they continued onward as he assists his former crew. When Jinbe arrived just in time for the Raid on Onigashima Sanji welcomed to the crew him with open arms like everyone else. After Kaidou and Big Mom's downfall, Sanji cursed Jinbe for being the third highest within the Straw Hat Pirates. Jinbe asked Sanji of what's wrong.

Tony Tony Chopper

Chopper is shown to be very amazed at Jinbe's strength and was one of the first to encourage Jinbe to join the Straw Hats, commenting that having a former Warlord would be a great asset to them. Like Zoro, Chopper considers Jinbe to be very cool, having cried in joy seeing how Jinbe defied Big Mom.

Nico Robin

Robin was concerned about Jinbe when he and Luffy were violently arguing over how to defeat the New Fishman Pirates due to the consequences. Robin interfered and insisted they should not fight. She consents to Jinbe's request to liberate the human pirates enslaved despite the possibility of them hating fish-men. She respects Jinbe as a crewmate and Jinbe also acknowledges Robin for her intelligence. She also encouraged Jinbe to finish his business and join when he is ready. After infiltrating Onigashima, Robin commented that Jinbe's maturity is a relief as they walked to the banquet hall together. They also demonstrated good teamwork in forcing Big Mom off the Live Stage before she could attack Franky.

Franky

Jinbe is on good terms with Franky, as when he revealed his past and history of the fish-men's discrimination, Franky cried calling Jinbe a real man. Following Jinbe's return to the Straw Hats at Wano Country, Franky heard from Nami and Chopper of Jinbe's skills as a helmsman and is impressed that the crew finally has a helmsman that could bring out the Thousand Sunny's full potential. During the raid on Onigashima, Jinbe trusted Franky to draw Hatcha outside the Skull Dome to prevent Hatcha from attacking the Samurai.

Brook

Brook, along with the rest of the crew besides Luffy, met Jinbe first on Fish-Man Island. When Jinbe had retracted his attempt to leave the Big Mom Pirates, Brook thought something was wrong as he thought the Jinbe he came to know is not a coward as the Totto Land News made him out to be and was more understanding of Jinbe's decision than the scorning citizens of Totto Land. Jinbe is shown to be respectful towards Brook and does not seem bothered by his skeletal appearance (though he was shocked to see him pop open his skull). After seeing that Brook was able to get all the copies of Big Mom's Poneglyphs, Jinbe was amazed and praised Brook for his efforts. Jinbe later praised him again after he destroyed Mother Carmel's photo. As they were escaping Whole Cake Island, Jinbe lifted Brook and everyone's spirits after Pedro's sacrifice by reminding them how Pedro's actions gave them a chance to escape, causing Brook to apologize for his rude behavior to him beforehand. When Jinbe told the Sanji Retrieval Team to press forward after Pedro sacrificed himself, Brook was at first infuriated that Jinbe was acting so insensitively to a comrade's death before being told that it was what Pedro would have wanted.

Sun Pirates

As the second captain of the Sun Pirates, Jinbe is deeply respected by his crewmates due to his magnanimous nature and benevolence. Jinbe prioritized his crewmates' wellbeing above all else, having joined the Warlords to allow some of the members who were formerly slaves to return home to reunite with their families. The main reason he refused to spin Big Mom's roulette is due to the safety of his crewmates being sacrificed rather than fear of his own life. The Sun Pirates deeply reciprocate Jinbe's dedication with absolute loyalty and was perfectly willing to become enemies with Big Mom, an immensely dangerous Emperor, to help Jinbe break free from the Big Mom Pirates to join the Straw Hats. When Jinbe and the Straw Hats were cornered by the Big Mom Pirates fleet, they assisted Jinbe by ambushing the Big Mom Pirates. Though the crew made it clear that they would gladly give their all to allow Jinbe and his new crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, to escape Totto Land alive, Jinbe's deep bond with them made it impossible for him to just leave them behind, and thus he stayed to fight with them to ensure everyone escapes. However, not the entirety of the Sun Pirates respected Jinbe, as Arlong and Macro departed to reform their own groups after Jinbe's induction into the Seven Warlords, with Arlong looking down on Jinbe's sympathy for humanity. The two groups made it clear that they only followed the Sun Pirates for Tiger's sake.

Fisher Tiger

Jinbe was extremely close friends and also sworn brothers with Fisher Tiger. They grew up together in the Fish-Man District and Jinbe saw Tiger as family, evidenced by his habit of calling him big brother Tai. When Tiger attacked Mary Geoise and became an enemy of the World Government, Jinbe resigned from the Neptune Army and joined Tiger's crew to assist him without a second thought. Jinbe respected Tiger and his leadership a great deal. He was always thoughtful and receptive towards Tiger's opinions. He also seemed to care a lot about Tiger's well-being and was not above showing brutality to the Marines who threatened his captain's life. It's been shown that Fisher Tiger confided to Jinbe about the "demons" that dwell in his own heart. When Tiger was fatally wounded and refused a blood transfusion due to it belonging to a human, Jinbe begged, to no avail, for Tiger to live and cried when Tiger died.

Arlong

While Jinbe and Arlong grew up together in an orphanage in the Fish-Man District, Jinbe, as a soldier of the Neptune Army, showed hostility towards Arlong when he was harassing the Fish-Man Island citizens, calling him scum and even trash, indicating that Jinbe frowned upon Arlong's distasteful attitude. Upon Jinbe's entrance into the ranks of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the Sun Pirates were split into smaller factions. Jinbe felt guilty about releasing Arlong into the East Blue, showing that he objected to Arlong's abusive treatment towards humans. Jinbe states that it was difficult for him to tell Luffy about his connection to Arlong, but after meeting Luffy again after two years, Jinbe musters the strength to reveal that he was the one who allowed the Arlong Pirates to run loose in the East Blue, and was quite shocked to hear that one of Luffy's crewmates suffered personally under Arlong's rule. Despite this, Jinbe still cares for Arlong despite his distasteful attitude.

Aladine

Aladine became one of Jinbe's closest friends after becoming captain of the Sun Pirates after Fisher Tiger. Like Jinbe, he also understood Fisher Tiger's will. He is also understanding of Jinbe's reasons for not stopping Arlong. One of the reasons why Jinbe joined the Seven Warlords was to allow Aladine, along with other members of the Sun Pirates who choose to, to return to Fish-Man Island as a government pardon. In return, Jinbe seems to greatly respect Aladine as he would make him his vice-captain at some point in their travels. In the Whole Cake Island Arc, Aladine and the rest of the Sun Pirates completely supported Jinbe's decision to join the Straw Hat Pirates as it is clearly something he wants to do.

Hatchan

Jinbe worried over the well-being of Hatchan, upon seeing the octopus fish-man heavily injured. However, it is apparent that Jinbe and Hatchan had not been in touch with each other since Jinbe was unaware that Hatchan escaped imprisonment before meeting him in the Sea Forest. Like Hatchan, Jinbe also carries the guilt of the devastation the Arlong Pirates caused in the East Blue because he allowed them to reside there, as well as the knowledge of Hody Jones' true nature, where despite their similarities, Hody is in fact far more dangerous than Arlong.

Wadatsumi

Because Wadatsumi and his crew aided Hody Jones in his attempts to take over Fish-Man Island, Jinbe considered him an enemy and fought against him with the Straw Hats, where he teamed up with Sanji to take him down. During Solo Journey of Jinbe, Knight of the Sea, Jinbe encountered Wadatsumi again where he learns of the latter posing as a sea god while taking offerings and throwing homes from the bottom of the sea to a nearby port town which unknowingly led to the sea monsters attacking the port town. Jinbe scolded Wadatsumi for his actions and watched as he and the sea monsters apologized to the people for the misunderstanding. With all hostilities put aside, Jinbe and Wadatsumi celebrated with the residents of the port town and the sea monsters. The next day, Wadatsumi asked Jinbe if he can accompany him on his journey, an offer which was accepted as the two were seen leaving the town together. When Jinbe announced his intentions to join the Straw Hat Pirates, he apologized to Wadatsumi for dragging him all the way for nothing but the latter states it was alright. Jinbe has become close friends with Wadatsumi. When the Big Mom Pirates ambushed the Straw Hats, Wadatsumi destroyed their fleet, saying he will not forgive people who troubled Jinbe.

Friends And Allies
Edward Newgate

Jinbe has a high respect for Whitebeard. Whitebeard claimed Fish-Man Island as his territory and, in doing so, saved it from the World Government and other pirate attacks. For this, Jinbe has expressed many times that he owes a great deal of gratitude and eternal debt to the Emperor and refused to participate in the war against Whitebeard, even if it meant losing his Warlord title and being imprisoned in Impel Down. Over the years, Jinbe's respect has grown to the point where he will readily declare himself as an adversary to anyone or anything with ill intent upon the Emperor's life, which is why he immediately engaged in battle against Ace on their first encounter, since Ace was out to assassinate Whitebeard at that time. During the Summit War of Marineford, Jinbe chose to resign as a Warlord to fight on behalf of Whitebeard. As for Whitebeard himself, the Emperor appears to have developed a sense of tolerance towards Jinbe, despite the fish-man's Warlord status (Jinbe has even implied that he visits Whitebeard and his crew from time to time).

Portgas D Ace

Jinbe and Ace were once enemies (since the latter wanted to kill Whitebeard), and nearly killed each other in a fight that lasted five days. Despite this, the two respected each other deeply and Jinbe was determined to help Ace's brother Luffy rescue him. Upon witnessing Ace's death at the hands of Admiral Akainu, Jinbe was fully prepared to give up his life in revenge and to buy even the smallest amount of time. He also mourned over Ace's death and even shed tears when telling Luffy that Ace was dead.

Boa Hancock

According to Hannyabal, despite the title of Warlord bestowed upon them, Jinbe had never personally met Boa Hancock prior to her visiting him and Ace at Impel Down. He was rather displeased with her at first, thinking she came to mock Ace, and that he distrusted her when she told them that Luffy was in the prison to save Ace. It is unknown what he thinks of her after realizing that she told the truth and, when in the heat of battle, she attacked Commodore Smoker to protect Luffy and openly stated that Luffy is her beloved. It seems that their relationship now is bordering neutral to friendly, as she allowed him to set foot on Amazon Lily as an exception, where no men, aside from Monkey D. Luffy and Silvers Rayleigh, were allowed before. Humorously, when Jinbe meets her Seraphim clone S-Snake on Egghead and she helped guide him and his crew to escape from CP0, he thanked her and called her nicer than the Hancock he's familiar with, remembering his former fellow Warlord as a "real nasty piece of work," as well as noting that she shares Hancock's affection towards Luffy.

Silvers Rayleigh

Jinbe also seems to have developed a friendship with the Dark King. At first, Jinbe was surprised when he met Rayleigh in Amazon Lily. They cooperated in stealing a marine ship, circling around Marineford, and ringing the Ox Bell. Jinbe may have a good impression of Rayleigh, due to the Dark King's friendship with Hatchan.

Emporio Ivankov

Jinbe and Ivankov were on good terms with each other from the time they met when Jinbe was freed from his cell. They both played key roles in the breakout (along with the other named characters of the breakout team) and throughout the war, they were seen together, aiding and protecting Luffy. After the war and before Ivankov left for Kamabakka Kingdom, Ivankov trusted Luffy to be in Jinbe's care.

Hack

Not much is known about his friendship with fellow Fish-Man Karate practitioner Hack, only that he is a dear friend, and he shares the same dream as Jinbe, for there to be friendship between humans and fish-men. The only difference is that Hack wants it "by fists".

Fishman Island

Jinbe is a popular native of Fish-Man Island and was once a soldier of the Ryugu Kingdom; everyone refers him as "Boss Jinbe" (ジンベエ親分, Jinbē Oyabun?). However, after abdicating his Warlord position, Jinbe could no longer stay on Fish-Man Island. Even so, he is still respected by the citizens. Jinbe has a close relationship with the King of the Ryugu Kingdom, Neptune, as well as his entire family. He is always welcome at Ryugu Palace and comes and goes as he pleases.

Jinbe has been close friends with Neptune as he has known him since when he was part of his army. The two are very respectful towards each other, as Neptune was grateful towards Jinbe for joining the Seven Warlords of the Sea in an effort to support Otohime's quest for peace with humans. Even though Jinbe forfeited his title, Neptune still respects him and allows him to visit the island anytime he wishes. Neptune entrusted Jinbe with tasks such as maintaining relationship with other factions such as the Four Emperors. Neptune's children have a similar level of respect for Jinbe, as the eldest son Fukaboshi was willing to give a message to Luffy from Jinbe. Neptune's youngest child, Shirahoshi has known Jinbe all her life, and greatly admires him. Jinbe, in turn not only admires Shirahoshi's devotion to her dead mother's ideals, but was shocked to learn that Shirahoshi knew her mother's killer was Hody Jones, but still kept her promise not to hate him. This action not only earned Jinbe's respect, but made him state that he will protect Shirahoshi and her ideals. The Neptune Family has a great deal of respect for Jinbe, Neptune himself even encouraged Jinbe to consider joining Luffy's crew when he was given the offer.

Koala

During his time with the Sun Pirates, they escorted a former human slave named Koala to her home. When he questioned her about why humankind is afraid of fish-man she responds it was because they did not know much about them. The impact the young girl left upon Jinbe was the start of his belief in peace between fish-men and humans. He was seen playing and taking care of her and was happy for Koala when she reached her hometown at Foolshout Island. It is unknown if he is aware that Koala is a member of the Revolutionary Army along with Hack.

Trafalgar D Water Law

Trafalgar Law rescued Jinbe and Luffy from the Summit War of Marineford while also healing their injuries even though Law had no obligation to do so. Once recovered, Jinbe thanked Law for his assistance. When Jinbe arrived at Wano, Law was shocked to hear him officially joining the Straw Hat Pirates.

Pedro

Jinbe was on good terms with the Mink Pedro during their attempts to save Sanji. Jinbe earned Pedro's respect for not spinning the roulette. They later worked together with Pedro while trying to hold off Katakuri to allow Luffy to show the broken photo of Mother Caramel to Big Mom. During the escape, Jinbe was shocked over Pedro's sacrifice to help them escape calling his actions as insane. While the others mourned his death, Jinbe encouraged everyone to keep moving forward and reminding them that it was his own actions alone and it was his victory. True enough, Pedro's actions enabled them to escape Totto Land.

Enemies
World Government And Marines

Jinbe was an enemy of the Marines and the World Government when he was with the Sun Pirates until he was accepted into the Seven Warlords of the Sea. As a Warlord, Jinbe and his entire crew were given a pardon for Fisher Tiger's attack against the World Nobles and the former slaves in the crew were free to return to Fish-Man Island. Jinbe forfeited his position for his refusal to assist in the war against the Whitebeard Pirates and was incarcerated in Level 6 of Impel Down. He escaped from Impel Down and waged war against Marineford in order to prevent Ace's death, which ended in failure. But by siding with Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates instead of with the Marines during the Summit War of Marineford, Jinbe once again became a willing enemy of both the Marines and the World Government.

Sengoku was greatly distressed by Jinbe's choice and some Marines such as Akainu and Brannnew refer to Jinbe as a traitor. The Five Elders commented that Jinbe's renouncement of his Warlord title was regretful. After the war, he returned to Marineford and helped Luffy ring the Ox Bell. Jinbe is also scornful of the World Nobles and their continued practice of slavery despite the prohibition allegedly established by the World Government. He demonstrated this by asking Robin to liberate the human pirates enslaved by the New Fish-Man Pirates and commented that watching Hody emulating the Celestial Dragons was sickening. Fleet Admiral Sakazuki perceives Jinbe as a traitor after his resignation from the Seven Warlords and allying himself with Luffy. Although he was more interested in taking Luffy's life, he showed absolutely no mercy to Jinbe on the battlefield and attempted to kill him numerous times while Jinbe was protecting Luffy. Nonetheless, Jinbe is perfectly aware of how dangerous Sakazuki is, and wasted no time in warning the Straw Hats about how ruthless the Marines have become under his command.

Marshall D Teach

He also seems to be familiar with the most recent Warlord to relinquish the position, Blackbeard, presumably from back in the days when Blackbeard, as Marshall D. Teach, was still a member of the Whitebeard Pirates under 2nd Division Commander Portgas D. Ace. Currently, Jinbe is furious with Blackbeard for Ace's incarceration and execution, but he is prudent about his disposition and abilities. He briefly warned Luffy of Teach's history when he was still part of Whitebeard's crew, saying he was an individual who must not be antagonized recklessly. After the battle for Fish-Man Island, he informs the Straw Hat Pirates of Teach's usurpation of Whitebeard's Emperor status and the Blackbeard Pirates search for people with strong Devil Fruit abilities in order to absorb them citing they would be invaluable targets.

Gecko Moria

He also appears to be familiar enough with Gecko Moria to be aware of his zombies' weakness to salt water and used it to his advantage during their battle. The two engage in fight at Marine Headquarters, with Moria claiming that he will steal Jinbe's shadow; however, the fish-man lands a powerful hit on him before he can do so.

Hody Jones

Hody also considers that Jinbe and the faction of the Sun Pirates that follow him are an annoyance. Even though Jinbe had no idea that Hody was the one who actually killed Otohime (until Hody revealed it), he seems to be the only one outside the Fish-Man District to be aware of Hody's dark nature since he had been keeping tabs on Hody while he was plotting something in the Fish-Man District. During the confrontation at Gyoncorde Plaza, Hody states that he hates Jinbe the most for not being an enemy of humans especially after the death of Fisher Tiger. By assisting the very humans who defeated Arlong, the Straw Hat Pirates, Hody considers Jinbe to be lower than Neptune.

Caribou

After Caribou lost the treasures that he stole from the Ryugu Palace, he attempted to kidnap mermaids again but was stopped and captured by Jinbe, who then took him in a coated boat up to the surface and eventually turned him over to G-5 Marine Commodore Yarisugi.

Charlotte Linlin

After Whitebeard's death, the remnants of the Sun Pirates, including Jinbe, would come to work under Big Mom, although she primarily let them do as they pleased. However, Jinbe is not loyal to her as he is thinking of cutting ties with Big Mom due to Luffy's invitation to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but he worries that her anger will spill to Fish-Man Island. As his crew and the townsfolk of Whole Cake Island suspected, Linlin did not take his request to depart her crew very well. Though she'll "allow" him to quit, she demands a heavy physical sacrifice in return and brought a roulette which will decide what he loses. Knowing that the roulette was rigged to ensure the deaths of himself and his crew, Jinbe took back his request to leave her crew. However, Jinbe ultimately betrayed the Emperor by defeating Charlotte Opera as well as assisting Luffy and Nami in escaping their captivity and caused a rebellion against the Big Mom Pirates. Later on, Jinbe convinced Luffy to form an alliance with the Fire Tank Pirates in order to overthrow Big Mom at the Tea Party. During the wedding, Jinbe officially declared to Big Mom that he was leaving the Big Mom Pirates in order to join the Straw Hats. In response, Big Mom tried to take away his lifespan, but her power had no effect on him due to him showing no fear towards her which he explained was because he was joining the crew of the future Pirate King. Jinbe then returned his sakazuki to her as a way to signify his departure from her crew. Further enraged by his defiance, Big Mom then resorted to brute force. When they later met again at Onigashima, Big Mom swore revenge against Jinbe for his previous actions of devastating her fleet prior to his departure from Totto Land, a challenge that Jinbe accepted.

Big Mom Pirates

Jinbe and his crew allied with Big Mom following the death of Whitebeard to protect Fish-Man Island. However, Jinbe was never loyal to the crew and wanted to leave their services and join the Straw Hat Pirates. When preparing to leave her crew, Jinbe wanted to leave honorably but ultimately saw that leaving would mean death. Jinbe later rebelled against crew by attacking and knocking out Charlotte Opera at the Prisoner Library before assisting Luffy and Nami in escaping from their captivity. While assisting the Sanji Retrieval Team, Jinbe was admonished by Charlotte Brûlée for betrayal, but he ignored her words. At the wedding, Jinbe openly revealed his treachery in front of the majority of the crew by freeing Luffy from Katakuri's grasp and personally told Big Mom about his leaving her services as they were surprised and angered by his defiance as well as his lack of fear towards their captain. During the battle with the Big Mom Pirates, Jinbe used his knowledge of the crew's abilities to help his allies. After retreating into Bege's fortress, the Big Mom Pirates surrounded Jinbe and his allies with some promising to ensure he does not leave the island alive.

Whoswho

Jinbe met Who's-Who during the raid on Onigashima during the Fire Festival, encountering him on the fourth floor of the castle where he decides to hold the line so Luffy could advance. Who's-Who expressed familiarity with Jinbe and, due to his spite for the Straw Hat Pirates, antagonized him and refused to show him his face. During their one-on-one fight, Jinbe realized that Who's-Who was once a member of CP9 who was imprisoned as he could use Rokushiki, where Who's-Who finally revealed to Jinbe that the reason he despises him is because he is now a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, who he blames for his imprisonment. During their fight, Who's-Who tells Jinbe about how he learned about the Sun God Nika during his time imprisoned, and he asks him if he knows if he was real or not, his reason behind asking him was because he believes the history of Fish-Men kind is a history of slavery. This accusation enrages Jinbe and he says nothing to him before using a secret technique to take him down.

Other
Crocodile

Among his fellow Warlords of the Sea, Jinbe seems to have some sort of history with his former peer Crocodile and is noticeably upset upon realizing Crocodile is incarcerated in the cell adjacent his own. Upon their release, Jinbe told Crocodile to leave Whitebeard alone. Crocodile's only response was asking him if he wanted to fight. However, in the late stages of the Summit War of Marineford, Crocodile helps Jinbe and Luffy to escape from Akainu.

Capone Bege

Capone Bege seems to have some respect for the former Warlord, knowing that Jinbe was not one to lie to him about Luffy coming to speak with him. Jinbe, having learned from Pekoms about Bege's plot to assassinate Big Mom and being well familiar with his past, believed that it would be beneficial for Luffy to ally with him in order to take down Big Mom. When the negotiations went awry, Jinbe reminded Bege, Luffy, and Caesar Clown that they all shared a common enemy in Big Mom which helped forged the alliance between them. During the chaos at the wedding ceremony, Jinbe protected Bege by taking the blame for being the one who told Luffy about Carmel's portrait after Katakuri interrogated the Straw Hat captain.

Totto Land

Ever since joining the Big Mom's crew, the citizens of Whole Cake Island have a great deal of respect towards him as they referred to him as "Boss Jinbe". They appreciated how he stopped one of Big Mom's craving illnesses, saving Sweet City from destruction. However, their opinions changed when they read about Jinbe's request about leaving the Big Mom Pirates only to retract it. This caused the people to view him as a traitor in his attempt to leave, and one of them even accused him of being a coward as they used to respect him. Some of the citizens laughed at his supposed intentions to leave.

Jinbe/Abilities And Powers

Introduction

Overview

As the former captain of the Sun Pirates, a former Warlord of the Sea, and the helmsman of the now Emperor-led Straw Hat Pirates, Jinbe is a mighty veteran pirate with great authority and a high level of respect from his previous subordinates and current crewmates. Alongside Sanji, Jinbei is one of two members of the crew to fight without weapons or Devil Fruit powers in combat. Even before he began his pirating career, Jinbe's childhood in the lawless Fish-Man District imbued him with combat skills that would allow him to become an elite soldier of the Neptune Army. He battled Portgas D. Ace on equal terms to the point of near-death, despite Ace possessing Logia powers, in a five-day long fight, and he shared a cell with him on Level 6 of Impel Down, where only the most fearsome criminals are locked up.

Jinbei's power and influence are so great that him departing from the Big Mom Pirates would severely diminish their organization's overall strength, and him becoming a member of the Straw Hats was seen as a major event worldwide. Even CP0 agents commented on his strength and believed he was capable of killing Who's-Who, a former CP9 agent (who was said to be a rival to the genius prodigy Rob Lucci) and member of the Tobiroppo, the six strongest Shinuchi of the Beasts Pirates. He was the first fish-man to become a Warlord, with his considerable former bounty of 250,000,000 reflecting the danger the World Government believes he poses. After his imprisonment and resignation from the Seven Warlords, participation in Impel Down's first ever mass breakout and the Summit War of Marineford, it was raised to 438,000,000, and after the Raid on Onigashima, it was raised to 1,100,000,000, currently the third highest among the Straw Hat Pirates. Jinbe boasts considerable interpersonal skills, which he exercises to maintain Fish-Man Island's connections to human organizations. He served as a Warlord of the Sea to improve relations with the World Government and served under Big Mom after leaving the Warlords, being entrusted by Neptune to run errands for her. He was able to quickly convince Monkey D. Luffy, Capone Bege, and Caesar Clown to put aside their hostility with each other and form an alliance due to their mutual hatred towards Big Mom. Jinbe also has a very acute sense of danger, as he refused to spin Big Mom's roulette after sensing murderous malice from the roulette; Pedro and Brûlée later confirmed that the roulette had been rigged to ensure death to anyone who spun it. Jinbe possesses strong willpower, being able to completely suppress any emotions of fear, which renders him immune to Big Mom's lifespan-stealing powers. This was shown again when he stayed conscious from Big Mom's burst of Supreme King Haki.

Physical Abilities

Strength

Even for a fish-man, Jinbe possesses tremendous strength. Alongside Jack, he is one of the most powerful fish-men seen thus far, shown when he punched a giant fish-man up into the air, defeated a Super Rookie with one punch, caught a gigantic iron club with one hand, held up a falling ceiling, and grappled with Big Mom, an Emperor of the Sea who possesses tremendous strength and weight, easily throwing her over his shoulder. He easily defeated Charlotte Opera with just one punch. He managed to defeat Who's-Who, a member of the Beasts Pirates Tobiroppo and a former CP9 agent whose strength stated to be rivalled to Rob Lucci. As a fish-man, Jinbe's physical capabilities significantly increase when he is at sea. While underwater, he was able to bring a large, capsized ship to the surface, and while swimming, Jinbe lifted one of Impel Down's massive entrance doors with little effort, using it as a raft to provide passage over the sea for Crocodile, Mr. 1, and Buggy with himself acting as the raft's propeller underneath.

Durability And Endurance

Jinbe has a massive tolerance for pain: not only was he one of the few people to be able to take a "baptizing" in boiling water in Impel Down without flinching (which is considered an impressive feat), he could also block a direct magma punch from Akainu with his bare hand, calm despite being badly burned, and took a direct hit from Akainu's magma-enhanced punch, which brutally pierced his body completely, and his only reaction was to apologize to Luffy for allowing him further pain and was able to survive long enough for Law to operate on him. Oddly enough, he exclaimed in pain when bitten by Luffy, though this is most likely because he was prepared for Akainu's attack but was caught off guard by Luffy's bite and that it was more out of irritation than actual damage. At the Sea Forest, he blocked Luffy's Jet Stamp without budging an inch. He took a hit to the face from Who's-Who's Gagan, which could bite through stone floors and flesh, and only bled lightly. Most notably, Jinbe even withstood a fiery sword attack from Big Mom on the Thousand Sunny that sent him crashing into the ocean and emerged almost unscathed.

Speed And Agility

Despite his large size, he is extremely swift, even on dry land. He could intercept an enraged Luffy whilst he was using Gear 2 (before the timeskip) and prevent him from further assaulting Blackbeard. He later prevented Akainu from dealing the finishing blow to the already fatally injured Ace. While rescuing Brook from Big Mom, Jinbe was able to swiftly grab Nami and Brook and escape from Prometheus's explosion in an instant. Due to him being a fish-man, Jinbei's speed and maneuverability greatly increases when in water. He is an excellent swimmer, as not only did he manage to pursue Impel Down's fleeing battleships, but he also outmaneuvered the incoming cannonballs fired at them by the Marines with relative ease, all the while bypassing the Sea Kings that infested the surrounding waters of the Calm Belt. He easily outsped the Caribou Pirates while carrying their captain, and quickly dived to avoid one of the Mecha-Shark's cannonballs while carrying Chopper, Bonney, and Luffy.

Fishman Karate

Jinbe is an exceptionally powerful and disciplined master of Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujutsu with years of battle experience, which he can use to knock away many opponents at once and grapple with powerful enemies several times his size. He was a child prodigy, as he was skilled enough to become a black belt at a young age. By adulthood, Jinbe's skill in Fish-Man Karate has become so great that his strikes do not need to make physical contact with an enemy as the water particles in the air will blow them away a few seconds after the attack's initiation. Another example of his strength and skill with Fish-Man Karate is that he defeated Minorhinoceros, one of the four Jailer Beasts who are Awakened Zoan Devil Fruit users, with a single uppercut. He easily punched Gecko Moria (a fellow Warlord) a few meters away, almost knocking him out.

He also knocked out Charlotte Opera, an enormous man larger than himself, in one punch. Jinbe's mastery of Fish-Man Karate allows him to affect all the water within his vicinity, including the water in a person's body. With this ability, he can harm Luffy despite having a rubber body. He can also secrete water from his body as Hody did after overdosing on Energy Steroids. Due to his tremendous mastery of Fish-Man Karate, supplemented with his physical prowess, Jinbe can perform sturdy defensive blocks to stop attacks as powerful as the thrusts from a shadow-strengthened Moria, one of his fellow Warlords.

When reinforced by Armament Haki, he managed to temporarily defend against the gigantic flaming blade of Big Mom's Cognac and suffered only minor injuries. With a single roundhouse kick, he countered a punch from the Energy Steroid-enhanced Wadatsumi, an enormous fish-man who even surpasses an ancient giant in size, knocking him off his feet and breaking several of his fingers. It should be noted that a few moments before, Wadatsumi had brutally defeated Surume, a massive kraken well-known for its monstrous strength. Using his own Uchimizu, a basic Fish-Man Karate technique, Jinbe could deflect an Energy Steroid-enhanced Hody Jones' Uchimizu, which was powerful enough to destroy multiple large corals and pierce through thick stone over an immense distance with relative ease, proving Jinbe's supreme mastery of Fish-Man Karate when compared to Hody, a fish-man with monstrous strength. Jinbe is also capable of using a hidden technique of Fish-Man Karate: Buraikan.

With this attack, Jinbe blasts the opponent’s body with a piercing water shockwave. After Jinbe used this powerful attack, he sent Wadatsumi (who had greatly increased his size) flying into the air. He also used Buraikan to send Big Mom off the Thousand Sunny with tremendous force. This was an impressive feat as Jinbe was the first person seen to knock her down, although she was heavily weakened from her tremendous metabolism and eight-hour-long craving at the time. He also displays the ability to skillfully manipulate water (or any other liquid, like tea or juice) as if it were a tangible cloth through Fish-Man Jujutsu, even using it to attack from a distance. Jinbe demonstrated this ability by splashing seawater on Gecko Moria's zombies even though he was standing on a battlefield covered in solid ice. He can cause devastating damage with this kind of technique to both people and ships, and even managed to flood all of Onigashima with the water provided by Raizo. With this martial art, Jinbei can also perform advanced grappling techniques that allow him to use an opponent's size and weight against them, hurling them into the floor with great force. This allowed him to repel the likes of Big Mom and Who's-Who, the latter of which had assumed his hybrid form and reinforced himself with both Armament Haki and Tekkai.

Tactical Skills

Jinbe is a great strategist. He is an expert in discerning military strategies after witnessing any subtle change in enemy formations, as seen when he quickly guessed that Magellan dispatched the order to the battleships outside Impel Down to flee during the mass breakout. During the Summit War of Marineford, he surmised that the Marines were plotting something after Emporio Ivankov informed him that the enemy was retreating further into the plaza. Jinbe divulged a cunning way to smuggle Luffy and his crew into Gyoncorde Plaza inside Megalo's stomach while effectively deceiving Hody into believing he and Princess Shirahoshi were captured. This allowed the Straw Hats to steal the World Noble's letter and keys to unlock the chains that bound the Neptune Family, releasing them from the captivity of the New Fish-Man Pirates. Another example is when he persuaded Luffy and the Sanji Retrieval Team into allying with Capone Bege to ruin Big Mom's Tea Party after noting they did not have a plan to act on. When Bege's assassination plan started to go wrong after Charlotte Katakuri restrained Luffy, Jinbe released Luffy while claiming to be the one who told Luffy about Carmel's portrait, distracting the Big Mom Pirates long enough for Brook to destroy Carmel's portrait. Because of his time with the Big Mom Pirates, Jinbe is very knowledgeable of their abilities and offered his allies useful information on how to counter them. During his fight with Who's Who, Jinbe is quick-witted enough to pin down the former by stepping on his Smilodon tail to prevent him from evading his attacks.

Interactions With Marine Life

Among fish-men, Jinbe has shown the unique ability to communicate with fish, even over long distances. The ability to speak with fish is usually unique to merfolk, so Jinbe's ability to do so is considered noteworthy by Crocodile. He calls this ability his Shark Network. He summoned a large school of whale sharks to the Calm Belt (which was usually too dangerous, with the Sea Kings infesting it) to assist him in his escape from Impel Down. He can give the whale sharks precise orders, so they understand and obey him. Due to the dangers of the Calm Belt, Jinbe can summon his whale shark comrades to help him to pass through it, as he did when leaving the Kuja Pirates' ship on their way back from Marineford. This indicates that the whale sharks are capable of outmaneuvering the Sea Kings, something that the former Warlord admits is troublesome for himself.

Helmsmanship

As a fish-man who is very familiar with the sea, Jinbe is a masterful helmsman, as shown when he steered a stolen Marine battleship from Impel Down to Marineford with little to no damage being inflicted on the stolen ship at all. He managed to skillfully steer the Thousand Sunny on his first try and even rode the ship within the 'Green Room' of the gigantic wave homie Big Mom created, using his tacking skills. Nami described Jinbe's skills as a helmsman as if he were controlling the ship like his own body. Jinbe has a vast knowledge of sea currents that greatly aids his helmsman skills, as he was able to constantly keep out of range of one of the Big Mom Pirates' fleets when it was pursuing the Sunny. He also managed to effortlessly steer the Thousand Sunny to evade Smoothie's flying slash with great speed and maneuverability. When Franky later heard of these accomplishments, he admitted that Jinbe's skills are necessary to bring out the Thousand Sunny's full potential.

Negotiation

Jinbe is an excellent negotiator and can calm the tensions that even Nami cannot handle, as seen when the Straw Hats and Capone Bege had a meeting inside the Fire Tank Pirates' hideout that quickly became tense. Unlike Nami, who is more charged with the financials of negotiation, Jinbe is able to negotiate to find the best possible way to form an alliance and maintain a relationship while he can wisely decide when to start and end the relationship. Through this, he became responsible for Fish-Man Island as an ambassador when he became a Warlord of the Sea to elevate the status of Fish-Man Island and carry-on Queen Otohime's legacy. King Neptune often handed over the responsibility for diplomatic relationships to Jinbe during his time as a Warlord. With Jinbe's current status, he remained to maintain relationships with pirate crews such as the Big Mom Pirates before he became a full-fledged member of the Straw Hats. Every time he wants to make a decision based on relationships between Fish-Man Island and other factions, Jinbe often consults with King Neptune to discuss the best possible way to maintain the relationship with humans in general; however, the final decision will be handed over to Jinbe due to his experience at negotiation and diplomacy.

Haki

Armament Haki

Jinbe is an extremely skilled and powerful user of Armament Haki, which he can use in tandem seemingly effortlessly with his Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujutsu techniques. He fought evenly against Ace, a powerful Logia user for five days straight. By hardening his arms, Jinbei defended against a slash from Big Mom's Cognac for some time without receiving damage, surprising Perospero. Jinbe's Armament Haki was advanced enough to withstand the Haki-enhanced Rokushiki techniques of the Ancient Zoan user, Who's-Who, and he is one of the few Armament Haki users skilled enough to harden his entire body, or parts of it. His Armament Haki is superior to Who's-Who's, as the transformed Rokushiki user's hardened index fingers broke against his hardened body.

Techniques

Kairagi (梅花皮, Kairagi?, literally meaning "Plum Blossom Peel"): Jinbe hardens his arms and crosses them in a defensive stance. This was first seen used against Big Mom's Cognac technique, which it briefly managed to hold back but eventually broke. This is called Kairagi Glaze in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations. Kairagi is a style of pottery that can resemble shark skin.

Observation Haki

Jinbe is able to use Observation Haki. This has allowed him to sense the presence and Haki of others, such as a burst of Shanks' Supreme King Haki, Jaygarcia Saturn's arrival on Egghead and a burst of Marcus Mars' Supreme King Haki.

Weapons

As a soldier in the Neptune Army, Jinbe carried a silver trident. During his fight with Ace, Jinbe had a tantō under his belt.

Jinbe/History

Introduction

Past

Jinbe was born 46 years ago in the Ryugu Kingdom and grew up in the orphanage that eventually became the Fish-Man District, alongside Arlong, Macro, and Fisher Tiger. He trained at the Fish-Man Karate Dojo at an early age and earned a black belt in Fish-Man Karate while still in his childhood. Around fifteen years before the current storyline, Jinbe was a soldier of the Neptune Army. While Otohime was preaching to her people, Jinbe commented that her preaching was going nowhere. He was then seen frowning at Arlong's ill-mannered behavior towards the Fish-Man Island citizens.

When Arlong was harassing a new recruit of the Neptune Army, Jinbe scornfully commanded Arlong to let him go, to which Arlong snidely complied. Jinbe and Arlong then each gave Fisher Tiger equally warm greetings after he returned to the island from an adventure. After Fisher Tiger attacked Mary Geoise and became an enemy of the World Government, Jinbe resigned from the military and joined the Sun Pirates. During a battle with the Marines, Jinbe displayed his brutality by beating unconscious Marines. Jinbe scorned them for overlooking slavery and calling freeing slaves a crime.

During their time roaming the Grand Line, the Sun Pirates battled numerous Marines including those led by Rear Admiral Kadar. After the battle, Tiger had a discussion with Jinbe and Arlong telling them not to kill humans; to do otherwise would mean stooping to their level. Tiger went on to say that their ultimate goal was freeing the oppressed and not becoming cold-blooded murderers. This did not sit well with Arlong and he suggested to Tiger that they should instill fear in humans by using ruthlessness and extreme brutality. Jinbe smacked Arlong in the head to silence him.

Later, Tiger spoke to Jinbe alone and relayed his concerns that Otohime may view himself and Arlong as equally ruthless and alluded to the demons of the past that lurked within his heart. A few years later, the Sun Pirates visited an island where a former slave of Mary Geoise named Koala resided. The inhabitants there had no way of returning the girl to her homeland, so they asked the Sun Pirates to take her. After taking the girl, Jinbe showed his sympathy upon seeing how traumatized she was. Jinbe tried to understand why the girl was so afraid of them, which she explained was simply a matter of knowing nothing about them.

As the Sun Pirates' voyage continued, she warmed up to him and the other pirates, and most of them to her. However, when they reached her hometown, the Sun Pirates were ambushed by Marines led by Rear Admiral Strawberry and tipped off by the villagers, causing Jinbe and the other fish- and mermen to abandon ship and steal a Marine vessel. Unfortunately for Fisher Tiger, he was badly wounded during the battle. After escaping the Marines, Jinbe along with the rest of the Sun Pirates surrounded Tiger's bed as he confessed about his past as a slave and how, though he tried, he could not stop hating humans and so could not accept their blood in his body. Jinbe begged for Tiger to live, but he eventually passed away with Jinbe and the other crew members crying in misery.

After Tiger's death and Arlong's capture, Jinbe took over Fisher Tiger's legacy and became the new captain of the crew. While reading a newspaper explaining Tiger's death, Jinbe noticed that Arlong had lied about how he died. The Sun Pirates battled more enemies, but Jinbe continued living by Tiger's will of not killing anyone. Eventually, his bounty raised to 250,000,000. Then one day, a government messenger bat sent Jinbe an invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

Chew suggested that the Sun Pirates should take an opportunity to make an infamous name for themselves, but Jinbe told the crew that he was thinking about accepting the government's offer. He then spoke with King Neptune, telling him about his plan to strengthen the bond between species. With Jinbe's acceptance into the Warlords, Arlong was released. Arlong showed his resentment towards Jinbe and told him that he was going back to being captain of the Arlong Pirates. Arlong told Jinbe to kill him if he wanted to stop him or Arlong would do as he pleased.

Arlong's arrogance lead both him and Jinbe into a fight, leaving Arlong severely beaten and carried off afterward. With that settled, Jinbe and Arlong went on their separate ways. Jinbe was then seen on his ship, expressing disappointment that Arlong could not understand Fisher Tiger's will. Aladine assured Jinbe that if Arlong went too far, they would have to stop him themselves. Some time later, an uproar occurred on Fish-Man Island when a World Noble arrived to the island.

Jinbe and his faction of the Sun Pirates were present on the island. The former fish-man slaves attempted to kill the noble, but Otohime stopped them and then preached to the people about not passing their hatred to their children. After hearing her words, Jinbe recalls Fisher Tiger's last words mirroring the same ideal. When the queen was threatened by the noble she was protecting, Jinbe then witnessed Shirahoshi's ability to call Sea Kings. Jinbe and everyone else present were stunned by this revelation.

After Otohime accompanied the noble to the surface, the people of the island anxiously waited for her. Jinbe told the children worried for her that all they could do was believe in the queen. The queen returned safe and sound and, with the letter of a World Noble's support in hand, she finally touched the Fish-Man Island citizens and gained their support and their signatures. Her success, however, was short-lived. One day in the Gyoncorde Plaza, the box containing all of the signatures suddenly caught fire, and in the ensuing confusion, Otohime was shot.

Jinbe then ordered the soldiers to protect the royal family. After Otohime died, Hody Jones claimed that he captured the culprit: a human pirate. Jinbe told Hody to keep it quiet for the sake of the queen's ideals, but Hody refused to comply. Jinbe later attended Otohime's funeral, tearful, alongside Aladine and watched Fukaboshi's speech through a visual broadcast. About two years before the start of the series, when Portgas D. Ace attempted to challenge Whitebeard, the pirate who protected Fish-Man Island, Jinbe stood prepared to fight Ace, due to the fish-man seeing Whitebeard as a hero. The two pirates fought non-stop for five days, nearly killing each other, until they finally collapsed from exhaustion. After Ace joined the Whitebeard Pirates, he and Jinbe developed a more amicable relationship. Roughly two years before the start of the story, Jinbe—board the Moby Dick—read that Bartholomew Kuma had been chosen as a new Warlord of the Sea after Ace had defeated the Warlord Hanafuda six months prior. The following two years after, Ace proudly showed Jinbe his younger brother Luffy's bounty that he earned after defeating Arlong, much to Jinbe's surprise.

Impel Down Arc

Sometime after Ace's capture, Jinbe was also imprisoned in Impel Down, due to being the only member of the Seven Warlords who refused the summons of the World Government to stand against the Whitebeard Pirates. He had decided to defy the Marines and was prepared to lose his status as a Warlord in the process. He was held in the same cell as Ace. There, he stated that he would gladly give his life to end the fighting. He was later seen talking with Ace about how Whitebeard saved Fish-Man Island and the reasons he's prepared to die to stop the fighting.

Ace would then pass the time prior to his death sentence by sharing tales of his younger brother, Monkey D. Luffy, with the fish-man. Knowing that Ace's captivity, as well as his impending execution, were being used to incur Whitebeard's wrath, Jinbe further stated that he wanted to break his cellmate out of the Great Prison. He also stated that he would stop the war from occurring, telling Ace that he still trusted in miracles and luck. However, this brought out a reaction from Crocodile, who explained to Jinbe and Ace that there are many pirates who have a grudge against Whitebeard.

Ace also personally asked Jinbe to take care of Luffy for him once he's gone. Jinbe declined, saying that even though it was Ace who asked, he has no obligation to look after someone he considers a complete stranger in the pirate-infested world they are in. Jinbe and Ace were visited by another Warlord, Boa Hancock, who wanted to see Ace. Hancock claimed that she simply wanted to see the prisoner triggering the war against Whitebeard which she would be joining. Jinbe, apparently under the impression that the female Warlord was only there to gloat at his and Ace's imprisonment, remarked that even the "idle empress" would go to war to save her Warlord position, seeing this as a low point for Hancock.

Hancock told Jinbe she meant no harm to them and cryptically revealed to Ace that his brother was trying to rescue him before leaving. When Ace told Jinbe this, he described Luffy's behavior as "reckless". Jinbe also pointed out that although he did not personally know Hancock, there was a possibility that she was lying. However, Ace countered that Hancock would not go out of her way to lie to him, and knowing Luffy, his breaking into Impel Down after hearing Ace's incarceration down there was exactly the sort of crazy thing Luffy would do. About six hours before Ace's execution, when Magellan came to Level 6 to escort Ace to his transfer to Marineford, Jinbe could do nothing but sit in his cell and watch.

When Luffy, Emporio Ivankov, and Inazuma reached Level 6, Jinbe immediately recognized Luffy as Ace's brother due to the straw hat Luffy wears and wasted no time yelling to the Straw Hat that the prison staff extracted Ace from his cell only moments ago and that there was still a chance to catch up to him. After Ivankov convinced Luffy into releasing Crocodile from his cell when the former Warlord offered assistance in providing a means to escape, Jinbe pleaded to be released as well, as he too wanted to save Ace. Luffy, realizing Jinbe's honesty, agreed to free him, earning him the fish-man's gratitude. Upon his release, Jinbe immediately glared menacingly at Crocodile (who was also simultaneously released by Inazuma) and made it clear that he would not allow him to kill Whitebeard. Crocodile, unfazed, asked Jinbe if he wanted to fight to the death.

Afterward, he and the others went up through Level 5 to Level 4, where Jinbe re-evaluated the designated time for Ace's execution, set to occur at 3 o'clock sharp. He also concluded that if Whitebeard and his crew made preparations beforehand, with Ace being escorted out in the open sea, the battle between the World Government and the Whitebeard Pirates could break out any time. After Crocodile reduced the gateway between Levels 5 and 4 to dust, Jinbe demonstrated his Fish-Man Karate by punching the jailers and launching a shock wave that wiped out the line of enemies descending upon him and his comrades. When the three remaining Jailer Beasts, led by Sadi, suddenly appeared, Jinbe urged Luffy to move further ahead and let him and the others worry about the three beasts. He lamented on the fact that he is not as powerful on dry land as he is out in the open sea.

Despite this claim, Jinbe further showed his strength by taking out one of the Jailer Beasts (the Minorhinoceros) with one powerful blow alongside Crocodile and Luffy, both of whom defeated the other two. Jinbe continued in aiding the rebelling inmates as they rioted further up to Level 4, where they were momentarily halted at the entrance to Level 3 by Hannyabal (backed by a large platoon of bazooka-wielding jailers stationed at the other side of the entrance), whom Luffy made short work of. But it was the unexpected arrival of Marshall D. Teach that truly finished the Vice-Warden off. Jinbe recognized the interloper as the one responsible for Ace's capture and was immediately angered, and asked what Teach was doing in Impel Down, immediately followed by asking if Teach ought to be called Blackbeard now.

Blackbeard only replied that the fish-man should not get worked up too soon, apparently aware that he and Ace were friends, and that he (Blackbeard) was only partly responsible for Ace's current predicament. As Luffy then started to attack Blackbeard, giving him significant injury, Jinbe stopped Luffy from wasting his time fighting Blackbeard, telling him to consider the rescue of Ace as the top priority. The breakout army eventually reached Level 1, and they united their forces with Buggy and Mr. 3's rioting squad. Jinbe then noticed that Magellan ordered the guards to do something with the ships outside of the fortress, and Jinbe informed them that they needed to hurry out of the prison.

Jinbe then leads the assault on the retreating warships as Luffy stayed to fight Magellan. Jinbe, along with Crocodile, Buggy, and Mr. 1 went to steal one of the battleships that was sailing off, with Jinbe carrying the rest of them on a makeshift raft. Jinbe then fiercely attacked the battleships, destroying half of one with a Spear Wave without much effort before being scolded by Crocodile. When the battleships near the one attacked by Crocodile, Buggy, and Mr.

1 tried to sink them with the whole ship, Jinbe protected them by watering the cannons and making them useless. Later, he helped Luffy, Mr. 3, Inazuma, and Ivankov escape from Magellan, calling a school of giant whale sharks as backup. As the survivors were transferred onto the ship, Jinbe began to steer the ship towards the Gates of Justice. From an earlier conversation, Mr.

2 Bon Kurei revealed that he intended to stay behind, so he could disguise himself as Magellan and sneak back into the prison to open the Gates for everyone else. Mr. 2 requested that Jinbe not tell Luffy until they passed through the Gates, so the Baby Den Den Mushi's signal would be cut off, preventing any tearful goodbyes. However, when confronted by Luffy, Jinbe told of what happened before they passed the Gates and protested Luffy's desire to go back to rescue Mr. 2, in that returning would only throw away what Mr. 2 sacrificed for. However, Jinbe gave Luffy a Baby Den Den Mushi to have one final talk with Mr. 2 before the signal would be severed.

Marineford Arc

Jinbe felt a certain amount of gratitude and guilt toward Luffy for being the one who had to defeat Arlong. However, he decided to temporarily set the matter aside and talk about it later in order to focus on their goal of saving Ace. After the successful escape through the Gates of Justice, Jinbe finally introduced himself to Luffy, revealing he was a Warlord (to Luffy's surprise), or most likely a former one since he escaped Impel Down with the intent to save Ace. As the crew came into sight of the Gates of Justice, Jinbe told Luffy that, if it had not been for the wind not blowing against them, they would've arrived sooner and then asked the latter how were they going to open the gates. Later, when Whitebeard's fleet finally arrived, the Gates of Justice opened for them.

After landing at Marineford, Jinbe retrieved all the Devil Fruit users who fell into the water and then shouted to Fleet Admiral Sengoku that he resigned from the Seven Warlords of the Sea. When Moria created an army of zombies, Jinbe splashed them all with salt water, causing the shadows to leave the reanimated bodies. Sengoku's revelation that Dragon is Luffy's father seemed to have spurred Jinbe into making some kind of connection. He then battled against Moria, who was after his shadow. Despite being augmented with shadows, Moria was sent reeling after one of Jinbe's punches.

Despite Moria only mildly hurt, he broke off from attacking further, leaving Moria infuriated. Upon seeing Squard stabbing Whitebeard due to Sengoku's plan, Jinbe expressed shock at what just happened. When the Marines raised the siege wall to trap all the pirates and to burn them to death with Akainu's Meteor Volcano, Jinbe launched Luffy over the wall with one of his water streams, per Luffy's request. Later, he was seen together with Ivankov on top of the siege wall. He was then seen asking a pirate doctor to attend to Luffy's injuries before declaring that he would die in the war at Marineford.

However, thanks to Ivankov, Luffy did not require any help. When Whitebeard was badly injured and as high ranked marine officers attacked him, Jinbe was among the pirates who formed a formation behind Whitebeard in order to protect him. He then watched Luffy made his way to the execution platform and was very glad that Luffy freed Ace. Jinbe then accompanied Ace and Luffy as they made their escape. After Akainu dealt the fatal blow to Ace, he looked on in horror, but then defended Ace from a second attack, declaring that he did not value his life and that if he could do even a little to help Ace, it would be worth it.

Unfortunately, it was already too late for Ace, and Jinbe was among the many who mourn Ace's loss. Marco then told Jinbe to grab Luffy and run and Jinbe complied. Jinbe continued to run with Luffy, not looking back as Whitebeard spoke his last words. After Whitebeard's death, Akainu appeared in front of Jinbe and once again told him to give Luffy to him. Jinbe replied that he would rather die than give up on Luffy, thinking back to Ace's request to look after Luffy.

As Akainu prepared himself to attack, Ivankov appeared and attacked Akainu with a Hell Wink. However, the attack did not stop Akainu. Jinbe hoped to jump into the sea to gain the upper hand but found the water below to be frozen. Akainu managed to strike Jinbe and harmed Luffy at the same time. Jinbe apologized to Luffy for letting him get injured. When Akainu was about to finish off Jinbe and Luffy, Crocodile came and repelled the admiral and then summoned a sandstorm to launch Jinbe and Luffy into the air to get them out of the admiral's reach. Jinbe, while carrying Luffy, was then caught (unintentionally) by Buggy, who was floating high in the air also trying to escape (made possible by the once-again frozen sea, allowing him a decent foothold). After barely maneuvering out of the way of Akainu's colossal magma fist, Buggy then carried Jinbe (who lapsed into unconsciousness) and Luffy to the just emerged ship of the Heart Pirates. Buggy threw Jinbe and Luffy onto Law's Submarine and they were then both safely carried in by Law's crew. The submarine soon submerged and successfully escaped, taking them far from the battlefield. Jinbe was later seen lying next to Luffy in Law's sickbay, with Law standing over next to them and instructing his crew to ready the ex-Warlord and Supernova's treatment.

Postwar Arc

Jinbe later woke up and thanked Law for saving him before meeting Ivankov again. Despite Law telling Jinbe to rest, Jinbe found it impossible as losing Ace and Whitebeard was too much for his heart to bear. The First Son of the Sea also commented that he was worried about Luffy, fearing the moment he wakes up and realizes his brother is dead. Ivankov and his followers soon depart and entrusted Jinbe with Luffy. Two weeks after the war at Marineford, Luffy woke up and went on a rampage in Amazon Lily.

Jinbe asked Law what would happen if Luffy continued, to which Law replied he would most likely die. Jinbe caught up to Luffy and tried to inform him of Ace's death, but found out that Luffy already realized that. He later teared up after seeing Luffy crying in grief. Luffy demanded to be left alone, but Jinbe stated he cannot leave Luffy to injure himself further. Luffy asserted that he could do what he will with his own body, and Jinbe countered that Ace was also free to live or die as he wished.

Luffy then tried attacking Jinbe, who quickly dodged his attack and slammed him into the ground. Luffy continued by biting on his arm, at which Jinbe became very irritated and pinned him against a rock. He told Luffy that he must endure and move past his pain, asserting that he has not yet lost everything. Luffy spoke of his crew and how he wanted to see them, at which Jinbe was relieved that Luffy has found something to hold onto. He later carried Luffy back to the shore, where they met with Silvers Rayleigh, whose very presence Jinbe was scarcely able to believe. Hancock, her sisters, and Lady Nyon soon arrived after that, bearing food that enticed Jinbe. Hancock told him off, as she prepared the food solely to help Luffy's recovery, but reluctantly allowed Jinbe to have some, and so the fish-man dug in and encouraged Luffy to partake as well. Later, he returned to Marineford with Luffy and Rayleigh. He took part in stealing a Marine ship, circling around Marineford, and ringing the Ox Bell. He was later seen on the Kuja ship, getting irritated by the Kujas pulling on his face. Soon after, he and Luffy parted ways with Jinbe promising to wait for Luffy and his crew on Fish-Man Island. The story continues two years later.

Jinbe/History/During And After The Timeskip

Introduction

During The Timeskip

At some point after leaving Luffy, Jinbe got in touch with the Emperor, Big Mom and formed an alliance with her. The Sun Pirates became a subordinate crew of the Big Mom Pirates, with the pact being sealed by Aladine marrying Linlin's 21st daughter, Praline. In exchange for their loyalty, as well as a monthly tribute of sweets, Fish-Man Island would become part of Big Mom's territory and use her flag for protection. Unfortunately, due to his renewed status as a criminal to the World Government after resigning from the Seven Warlords, Jinbe could not enter Fish-Man Island, and thus could not meet Luffy on the island as he had originally planned to do. However, he was able to reside in the Sea Forest, and decided to remain there to wait for Luffy. During his time, Jinbe was also keeping an eye on Hody Jones and his crew, but was not able to decipher his plans. He gave Prince Fukaboshi a message to relate to Luffy, warning him not to fight Hody and that he would be waiting in the Sea Forest.

Fishman Island Arc

While at the Sea Forest, Jinbe sat next to the grave of Queen Otohime. He commented that even after her death, no one had forgotten her ideals. Later, Luffy, Shirahoshi, Megalo, Chopper, Hatchan, and Sanji arrived at the Sea Forest. Jinbe was overjoyed to see Luffy again, but deeply surprised that Shirahoshi was out of Hard-Shell Tower, and was also surprised to see Hatchan, who was supposed to have been captured with the other Arlong Pirates. Jinbe then asked Luffy to explain why he brought Shirahoshi out of her tower.

After Luffy reassured Jinbe about Shirahoshi's safety by intercepting a homing axe, Jinbe commented on how carefree Luffy was. While Shirahoshi was paying her respects to her deceased mother in front of her grave, Luffy inquired about the grave. Jinbe informed Luffy that the grave belonged her mother. Nami and Camie soon arrived bearing terrible news about Hody Jones' rampage in the Ryugu Palace. Jinbe decided to explain the situation as quickly as he can and revealed to the group that he was responsible for allowing Arlong to venture into the East Blue.

Before Jinbe began his explanation, he told a distressed Shirahoshi not to worry about her father, saying that he would be saved from the clutches of the New Fish-Man Pirates. After Nami asked Jinbe about him setting Arlong loose, Sanji stated that he heard about Jinbe from Yosaku and he thought that Jinbe was as bad as Arlong and was surprised that he allied with Luffy. Sanji then informed the ex-Warlord about Nami's suffering at the hands of Arlong and warned him that what he said next would determine whether or not he should be forgiven. Jinbe started off by explaining the dark past of the fish-men and merfolk, as well as the respective ideals of Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger. After finishing his story, Jinbe stated that he would take any punishment Nami desired.

Nami relieved Jinbe of the blame since Arlong was the guilty one. Jinbe expressed his tearful gratitude. He then reviewed the current situation on Fish-Man Island. Jinbe said that he knew Hody was scheming something after he left the Neptune Army, but Hody managed to keep Jinbe from getting any word of it. Hatchan started revealing Hody's plan but was interrupted when a visual Den Den Mushi appeared and broadcasted Hody's speech to Fish-Man Island.

When Hody showed the chained-up Neptune, Nami remarked on how the other Straw Hat Pirates, mainly Roronoa Zoro, caused him to be captured. Jinbe was shocked and exasperated at the news, but Camie explained that it was a big misunderstanding and that the Straw Hats were attacked first. Hody went on in detail of his plan to recreate the Ryugu Kingdom as well as execute Neptune and the imprisoned Zoro, Usopp, and Brook. Shirahoshi attempted to go with Megalo to rescue her father, but Jinbe stopped her. Luffy resolved to fight Hody, but Jinbe told him not to, saying that a human fighting Hody would only increase the fish-men's hatred towards humans.

Luffy said that he needed to rescue his friends trapped at the palace and that if Jinbe wanted to stop him, he would have to fight him. Jinbe regrettably agreed and prepared himself. Luffy remained insistent on going to Ryugu Palace. He tried to hop on Megalo, but Jinbe stopped him using Fish-Man Karate. Luffy counterattacked using Jet Stamp and Jinbe blocked him.

They then charged at each other but suddenly a clone of Nico Robin appeared in between them, shocking Jinbe at her unexpected appearance and yelled at her to move out of the way. Before Luffy and Jinbe collided, "Robin" vanished and the two hit each other. After the real Robin appeared and said that friends should not fight, Jinbe once again tried to reason with Luffy, but the Straw Hat captain remained stubborn. Jinbe eventually came up with a plan that would make Luffy a hero instead of a villain. At first, Luffy disagreed but decided to go along with it when Jinbe agreed to give him all the meat he wants.

Jinbe and Shirahosi rode Megalo to Gyoncorde Plaza to save the king. He and Shirahoshi soon saw what appeared to be King Neptune, but was actually a balloon dummy set as a trap. Shirahoshi was easily deceived, and when they approached it, they were ensnared in a net. They were then tied up and taken to the plaza. Shirahoshi tearfully apologized to Jinbe for falling for the enemies' trick.

Jinbe was not deterred since he planned on letting himself get captured from the start. Hody, thinking that his plan was going smoothly, was overjoyed and revealed to everyone that he was the one who truly killed Otohime. Jinbe was stunned at this revelation. When Hody gloated about killing Otohime right in Shirahoshi's face, the princess said that she knew all along, shocking Jinbe and the others present. Shirahoshi explained that Megalo witnessed Hody killing Otohime and relayed the information to her.

Jinbe asked Shirahoshi about why she never told anyone. Shirahoshi tearfully stated that she was following her mother's last wish of not holding any hatred towards the killer. Jinbe was surprised that Shirahoshi could actually uphold her promise and commented on Shirahoshi's strong spirit. Hody, on the other hand, ridiculed the princess, saying that her kindness and mercy would lead to the deaths of the rest of her family. Jinbe assured the princess that she did nothing wrong.

When Hody was about to kill Neptune, Luffy jumped out of Megalo's mouth and kicked Hody a great distance back. Jinbe was surprised that Luffy actually came out earlier than planned, but relented that it could not be helped. Nami retrieved the World Noble's letter, Robin freed the king and the princes, and Hoe took them to safety. When the rest of the Straw Hats appeared, Jinbe stood among them, preparing to fight against the New Fish-Man Pirates. After Nami gave Shirahoshi the World Noble's letter, Jinbe told the princess that he would help protect her ideals.

Jinbe was awed when Luffy defeated half of Hody's forces with Supreme King Haki. Hody then tried to kill Shirahoshi with a water shot, but Jinbe nullified Hody's attack with his own water shot. Later he was choking a New Fish-Man Pirate while commenting on Hody's extortion of Surume through the threat of harming the kraken's siblings. Suddenly, the plaza became dark. Noah, the ancient ship that Vander Decken IX tossed, reached the island and was breaking through the bubble.

Just as everyone feared the bubble would not hold, they also realized that Shirahoshi was missing. She was high above the plaza and Jinbe realized that at that height, she would redirect the ship away from the plaza. Jinbe told Luffy that even though the ship is full of water, Decken is a Devil Fruit user, so there must be air somewhere and then tossed him a bubble-making coral to help him. When Wadatsumi defeated Surume due to taking an Energy Steroid pill, he attacked Jinbe, who easily countered by using a roundhouse kick against the giant's punch. After Wadatsumi was kicked by Sanji, Jinbe then prepared himself to fight the giant fish-man together with Sanji.

He continued to block Wadatsumi's attacks. When he saw Hammond's "Slave Tank" and how the New Fish-Man Pirates were treating their captives in the same way the World Nobles treat their slaves, he asked Robin to help free them despite the risk they may later pose to Fish-Man Island, and she agreed. After Wadatsumi became almost spherical after sucking so much air in an attempt to intimidate his foes, Jinbe and Sanji began executing their unseen plan. Jinbe struck Wadatsumi with a powerful Fish-Man Karate attack, causing the giant to open his mouth. Wadatsumi then flew high into the sky as the air he sucked in was released.

Jinbe's attack gave Sanji an opening to deal a devastating blow to Wadatsumi. Following the defeat of Wadatsumi and the leaders of the New Fish-Man Pirates, Jinbe and the Straw Hats looked up into the sky as Luffy tried to destroy Noah. When the Sea Kings appeared and stopped Noah from falling, saving the ship and the island at the same time, everyone on Fish-Man Island celebrated. During the aftermath, Jinbe kept the formerly captive humans and the subordinates of the New Fish-Man Pirates in the plaza. The pirates of both factions begged Jinbe to allow them to leave, but Jinbe stated that Neptune would decide their fates and threatened to strike down anyone who tried to escape.

Due to his overexertion, Luffy had lost a lot of blood and needed a transfusion, a type no one else on his crew has. Jinbe volunteered to be Luffy's donor since, as a pirate, the law that forbids blood donations to humans did not matter to him. During the transfusion, Luffy recovered and asked Jinbe to join his crew. He reluctantly turned down Luffy's invitation, saying that he had unfinished business to take care of. However, he stated that once it is dealt with, he would come to Luffy's side and, should Luffy still feel the same way, would like to be asked to join once more.

Jinbe then joined in on the banquet at the Ryugu Palace in the Straw Hats' honor. During the festivities, Jinbe spoke to the Straw Hats in private and informed them of the Marines' movements during the timeskip such as how Sengoku retired and how his successor was decided between Aokiji and Akainu after an epic duel between the two admirals which ended in Akainu's victory. He also informed them of the Blackbeard Pirates gaining enough notoriety for Blackbeard himself to take the vacant spot of the Four Emperors, along with the rumors that the Blackbeard Pirates are out stealing powers from other Devil Fruit users. He urged Luffy to be careful, as his past connections with Blackbeard and garnered notoriety might tempt the latter to target him yet again, only to realize that the boy was eating to his heart's content. The other Straw Hats said that it's fine that they at least got the message, to which Jinbe sympathized at the work they have got cut out for themselves.

Later, along with the Neptune Royal Family and the Neptune Army, he looked upon the New Fish-Man Pirates leaders in their jail cell and how they have become old due to the Energy Steroids that they stole and consumed in excess. Afterwards, Jinbe had a private talk with Neptune over the status of the Sun Pirates under Big Mom's jurisdiction. Jinbe stated that, despite her unreasonable demeanor, they have been pretty much able to do as they pleased and admitted that serving under an Emperor served as great protection for his crew. Neptune noted it was because of Jinbe doing this that the island was kept safe after Whitebeard's death through the name of Big Mom, despite Jinbe stating that he and his crew should be doing the protecting. Jinbe stated that he was thinking of cutting ties with Big Mom due to Luffy's invitation to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but he worried that her anger would spill to Fish-Man Island. Neptune stated that Jinbe took on too much responsibility and that they should be able to defend themselves, for aside from the 70,000 new recruits of the Fish-Man District, Neptune stated he would seek to borrow the Straw Hats' flag for protection, to which Jinbe happily concurred. He was later present and shocked along with the crew and Neptune when Luffy declared that he would challenge Big Mom to a fight. Jinbe noted that now he really has to leave Big Mom before things get worse and told the crew not to irritate her anymore than they already have. Jinbe and the other Fish-Man Island citizens soon bid farewell to the Straw Hats. Jinbe asserted with a nod on how he would meet up with them again someday. When a child requested a straw hat of his own to play "Hero", Jinbe stated that he would arrange for a trading ship to head for the surface and stock up on a supply of "hero hats".

Dressrosa Saga

Caribous Kehihihihi In The New World

Soon after Caribou started attempting a second mermaid-kidnapping spree, Jinbe stopped him by punching him in the face. He then placed the felon into a barrel and took him away from Fish-Man Island while riding a coated boat to the surface. Sometime after leaving Fish-Man Island, they met Coribou and the rest of the Caribou Pirates. Jinbe then stepped out of the boat and pulled it far away from the Caribou Pirates' ship. He and Caribou later reached the surface at the ruined G-5 Marine Base. Jinbe then quickly departed, leaving Caribou in the hands of Commodore Yarisugi, who soon began thinking of several sadistic ideas on what to do with the pirate.

Solo Journey Of Jinbe Knight Of The Sea

Later, when Jinbe went on a journey to search for his friends, he encountered a lost Sea Kitten while traveling underwater. Afterwards, Jinbe encountered an ocean dog police officer, who then decided to help the Sea Kitten. When they arrived at the Sea Kitten's home, they found nothing there but the ocean dog's house, which was turned over. Jinbe and the Sea Kitten then saw a sinking ship. Jinbe saved the sailors by raising the ship to the surface, gaining their gratitude.

He was then surprised when he read the news concerning Luffy and Law's alliance and Donquixote Doflamingo's supposed resignation from the Seven Warlords of the Sea. From the newspaper, Jinbe also learned that the Sea Monsters went on a rampage at a port town. Jinbe and the Sea Kitten later traveled to the port town and discovered the Sea Kitten's home among the ruins. After disembarking, Jinbe heard the story from the locals and was led to a sea shrine with no offerings on it. Once he returned to the port town, he saw the ocean dog and its home being thrown onto the ruins.

He then pursued a mysterious individual that retreated to the ocean floor. There, Jinbe discovered a large pile of offerings and encountered an old foe, Wadatsumi. After hearing from his side of the story, Jinbe gave him a scolding. Jinbe then spoke to the Sea Monsters that rampaged at the port town to clear up a misunderstanding. He was present when Wadatsumi and the Sea Monsters apologized to the towns people and the Sea Kitten reunited with its parent. Soon after, the locals showed Jinbe a poneglyph that was hidden among the ruins. Jinbe watched the Sea Kings act as ships for the locals to make up for breaking theirs. Having made peace with each other, the locals, Sea Monsters, Wadatsumi, and Jinbe had a feast together. On the next day, Wadatsumi asked Jinbe if he could come along with him. After bidding the townspeople and the Sea Monsters farewell, Jinbe left with Wadatsumi, taking the poneglyph with them.

Whole Cake Island Arc

Jinbe later met with his crew to discuss un-affiliating with Big Mom and joining Luffy's crew. The Sun Pirates agreed and fully supported his decision. When Jinbe asked Aladine's wife, Charlotte Praline, about the possibility of incurring Big Mom's wrath if he leaves her crew, she stated that Jinbe would not be the first person who tried to leave and warned him that not a single soul brave enough to utter such words has lived to see another day. Aladine later watched Luffy's group from under the sea, and contacted Jinbe for further orders. Upon arriving to Whole Cake Island, Jinbe delivered his poneglyph to Big Mom.

Later while she was throwing a tantrum in Sweet City due to her craving for croquemboche, Jinbe stopped her by giving her the sweets she desired. After she calmed down, Big Mom thanked Jinbe for the poneglyph he gave her. Jinbe then wished to discuss something important with her and Big Mom wondered with a frightening expression if Jinbe intended to sever their alliance. Jinbe later explained to Big Mom about his decision to leave her crew. Big Mom was unconcerned about his reasons but was greatly displeased.

She then demanded Jinbe to give up something in return and as such, brought out a consequence roulette wheel. Sensing that the roulette was rigged to ensure the death of not only himself but also his crewmates, Jinbe avoided spinning it by claiming to take back his request to leave Big Mom's crew. After his comrades saved Pekoms from being killed by sharks after getting shot by Capone Bege, Jinbe learned from Pekoms about Bege's assassination plot and Big Mom's intention to massacre the Vinsmoke Family, including Sanji, which would lead the Straw Hats to recklessly try to rescue Sanji. Jinbe spoke to his crew in secret and explained to them about the roulette wheel. He also told them his plan to rebel against Big Mom in order to assist Luffy in his efforts to rescue Sanji and instructed them to leave Totto Land during the chaos.

Two days after his meeting with Big Mom, Jinbe went to the Prisoner Library where Luffy and Nami were being held prisoner. Charlotte Opera, who was standing guard, told Jinbe that he was forbidden on castle grounds, but Jinbe simply apologized as he hit Opera in the stomach with a powerful Gosenmaigawara Seiken. He released the Straw Hats by burning the book they were imprisoned in and dousing them in water after they were freed. He then explained to them that his Sun Pirates were also one of the crews serving under Big Mom, but he intended to rebel against her. As Luffy dashed out of the Prisoner Library, Jinbe tried to warn him that the castle was crawling with strong foes.

Jinbe and Nami were then pursued through the hallways until they found Chopper and Carrot coming out of a nearby mirror. After Jinbe and Nami entered the Mirro-World, Brûlée angrily reprimanded Jinbe for betraying the Big Mom Pirates. Jinbe explained that he avoided spinning the punishment roulette wheel and Pedro commended him for that by explaining the consequences of it. The group then went on searching for Luffy, Brook, and Sanji. They found Brook being held by a sleeping Big Mom in her bed, and they created a fake Brook using another skeleton and some seaweed.

Jinbe then placed Brûlée in between the mirror to Big Mom's room, allowing them to travel through it at will. He watched as their first three tries to rescue Brook were unsuccessful, and when Nami went to save Brook, Big Mom threw Prometheus at them, forcing Jinbe to rush in and pull Nami and Brook into the mirror before they were caught in the explosion. Brook then revealed that he had made copies of Big Mom's poneglyphs, impressing Jinbe. The group searched for Sanji, but none of the mirrors saw him. After Nami theorized that Sanji went to the place where he and Luffy fought, Jinbe commented that Sanji must have gone to Whole Cake Island for some important role he had to fulfill as a Vinsmoke.

Jinbe doubted that it would be easy to convince Sanji to come back. He then claimed that he planned to tell the group something after they were all together, but revealed that they could not let the wedding happen, because it would be no mere ceremony. Jinbe asked the group about Pekoms and revealed that the lion mink is alive and safe, but he was about to meet his doom because of a certain plot he was involved in and would have died if Jinbe's crew had not noticed. Sometime later, Jinbe and his group managed to contact Luffy and Sanji through a mirror shard. After Luffy explained his intent to ruin the wedding ceremony, Jinbe explained more about Bege, such as his backstory and him plotting against Big Mom.

Jinbe then proposed to Luffy about forming an alliance with Bege and Luffy agreed to meet up with him. After Jinbe informed Luffy and Sanji the location of the Fire Tank Pirates' base, Jinbe and his group went to Bege's hideout ahead of them. When the Straw Hat Crew and the Fire Tank Pirates began their negotiations, a fight nearly broke out between Luffy, Bege, and Caesar. Jinbe stopped the quarrel by reminding them that they shared a common enemy in Big Mom and need to work together to defeat her. As Bege explained his plan to kill Big Mom, Jinbe listened attentively.

The meeting adjourned once Bege finished going over the plan. Bege transported the alliance members to the Tea Party inside his body, and when he checked on them, he was shocked to see the Straw Hats sleeping. Jinbe assured him that he would wake them up 10 minutes before the wedding ceremony. After the ceremony started, Jinbe had difficulty waking Luffy up but eventually managed to do so with food. The team then went into the Mirro-World and prepared to crash into the wedding venue once they heard the signal.

When Luffy made his move against Big Mom, Jinbe and Pedro released the many copies of Luffy through the mirror before running out to join him. After Charlotte Katakuri subdued Luffy, the Sweet Commander noted that Luffy was after the Mother Carmel portrait and demanded to know how he knew about it. Jinbe appeared and used black tea to free Luffy while revealing that Katakuri ate the Mochi Mochi no Mi. Jinbe then claimed that he was the one who told Luffy about the portrait, lying that he heard rumors while working under her for so long. Jinbe then declared to the angered Big Mom that he was leaving her crew to join the Straw Hat Pirates.

Big Mom responded to his declaration by saying that he must give up some of his life, which Jinbe was prepared to do despite Luffy's protests. However, Big Mom was unable to take away Jinbe's lifespan because he was not afraid of her and he explained that a man who will join the crew of the future Pirate King does not have to fear a mere Emperor. He then returned his sakazuki to officially seal his departure from the Big Mom Pirates. Enraged by his defiance, Big Mom stomped on the sake cup and attempted to attack him with Prometheus while Brook destroyed the portrait. Jinbe evaded Big Mom's attack and after seeing Brook's success, Jinbe was overjoyed.

In the ensuing conflict, Jinbe fended off the attacking Big Mom Pirates, wondering why nothing was happening before warning Pedro about Oven's Netsu Netsu no Mi. Bege later told Jinbe to back up the Straw Hats as his assassination operation initiated. As Katakuri went after Luffy, Jinbe tried to fight him but the Sweet Commander managed to get past him. However, despite Katakuri's efforts, Luffy showed Carmel's broken portrait to Big Mom, causing her to start screaming. Jinbe then quickly put on his earplugs.

Jinbe watched as Bege, Vito, and Gotti fired their KX Launchers at Big Mom. However, Big Mom's scream detonated the rockets before they could reach her, shocking Jinbe and his allies. With the assassination attempt a failure, Caesar flew into the venue with the escape mirror and Bege signaled the alliance members to retreat. Before they could escape into the mirror, Big Mom's scream shattered it, leaving them trapped in the venue. Jinbe then watched Bege transforming into a giant fortress to save the alliance.

Jinbe's group and the Vinsmoke Family then retreated inside the fortress. Inside Big Father, Jinbe asked Bege what they should do next, but the alliance found themselves in a dire situation as the fortress came under attack by a furious Big Mom. As Bege's fortress continued to suffer damage from Big Mom's attacks, Jinbe listened to Bege as he came up with a plan to escape with Caesar's help. Jinbe remained inside Bege as turned back into human form and had Caesar carry him out of the venue. As the Big Mom Pirates hindered their escape, Luffy, Sanji, and the Vinsmoke Family were overwhelmed by the enemy.

Jinbe and Pedro prepared to go out to assist them, but the Tamatebako dropped to the base of the Whole Cake Chateau and the bomb inside the chest exploded, causing the castle to topple over. As the castle collapsed, Jinbe's group, Bege's crew, and the Vinsmoke Family got away. Jinbe's group and the Fire Tank Pirates rendezvous at the northwest part of Whole Cake Island, where Bege decided to part ways with the Straw Hats. After Brook and Chopper separated from the group to retrieve the Shark Submerge, the rest headed for the Thousand Sunny. As they approached the Seducing Woods, they ran into Kingbaum.

Nami then used part of Big Mom's vivre card to control Kingbaum and forced him to transport the fleeing team. However, before they reached the Seducing Woods, a crazed Big Mom (while riding on Zeus) caught up to them. Using Napoleon in its sword form, Big Mom unleashed an air slash that cut off a part of Kingbaum. As Big Mom prepared to attack again, Nami diverted Zeus' attention by using thunderclouds, causing the cloud homie to veer off-course and drop Big Mom. When Jinbe and his group reached the Seducing Woods, Big Mom ordered the tree homies to stop the Straw Hats, but Kingbaum charged through them.

Jinbe and his group were later forced to jump off Kingbaum when Prometheus attacked and burned Kingbaum for his betrayal. As the Sanji Retrieval Team continued with their escape, Jinbe explained about Big Mom's eating disorder to Luffy as she resumed her pursuit, and Jinbe urged Nami to keep feeding Zeus thunderclouds because it was the only way to keep Big Mom from catching up to them. When Prometheus caught up to them and Luffy's attacks were unable to harm the living flames with Haki punches, Jinbe managed to stun Prometheus with blasts of water, but several Big Mom Pirates caught up to their captain and clashed with the Sanji Retrieval Team. The team pulled out of the conflict quickly, knowing they could not split up there. When Zeus ate one of Nami's weather eggs and grew massively and became stormy, Nami took the opportunity to summon a massive lightning bolt that struck the Big Mom Pirates pursuing them.

Nami's attack left Big Mom laying at the bottom of a crater. To the Straw Hats' shock, Big Mom was barely affected and continued to move. She ate through the ground as she moved back up, and the team started running again. They were then approached by Pudding and Chiffon. After Chiffon requested Sanji's help in making a cake for Big Mom, Sanji readily agreed to assist them.

Big Mom then got back on her feet and unleashed another devastating air slash, and the two groups parted ways with Sanji heading to Cacao Island with Pudding and Chiffon while Jinbe and his group continued fleeing to the Thousand Sunny. Pudding used her Devil Fruit powers to send memories flooding into the souls in the homies, allowing the Straw Hats to make it to the coast without trouble. Jinbe and the Sanji Retrieval Team made it back to the ship but were still chased by Big Mom. They got into a conflict with Perospero and Katakuri, who were onboard with Chopper and Brook. While Luffy clashed against Katakuri, Jinbe and Nami prepared the Sunny for escape.

After Perospero trapped the ship in candy, Jinbe watched in shock as Pedro attempted to take out Perospero with a massive suicidal explosion. Thanks to Pedro's efforts, the candy trapping the Thousand Sunny dissolved, and the team completed their preparations for their getaway. After Luffy grabbed and dragged Katakuri into the Mirro-World, Jinbe operated the Thousand Sunny's controls, and he and the rest of the group on the ship escaped Whole Cake Island with a Coup de Burst. As the team mourned Pedro's self sacrifice and lamented on their inability to save him, Jinbe encouraged them to press on and keep their guard up. After the team was spurred into action, they spotted not only the Big Mom Pirates' fleet heading toward them, but Big Mom herself, who was walking on water using Perospero's candy sea slug.

While under siege by the Big Mom Pirates, the team encountered another dire predicament when Big Mom created a massive wave homie to engulf the Thousand Sunny. However, thanks to Jinbe's skills as a helmsman, the team managed to come out of that situation unharmed by skillfully sailing within the 'Green Room' of the wave. He then continued to handle the ship as they sailed toward Cacao Island where they planned to meet up with Sanji and Luffy. On the way to Cacao Island, the group on the Sunny was puzzled when they saw no pursuers. Jinbe hoped that Aladine and his group managed to escape.

With still no enemies in sight, Jinbe commented that there was no way things would continue this smoothly since Big Mom has her pride as an Emperor. As they were getting closer to Cacao Island, Jinbe told the group to prepare for a battle. The group on the Sunny was later surprised to find themselves once again pursued by Big Mom and a fleet of Tarteships. They were initially able to hold their own, but they later discovered another fleet of Tarteships led by Daifuku in front of them. As they were about to be surrounded by the Big Mom Pirates, they thought about a counterattack.

Carrot told the rest of the team to leave this to her, and they watched with amazement as Carrot transformed into her Sulong form and launched an attack on Daifuku's crew. During the scuffle between Carrot and Daifuku, Jinbe revealed that Carrot faced the risk of severe exhaustion if she used the Sulong form for too long, prompting Brook to retrieve Carrot and carry her back to the Sunny. However, Jinbe and his group later faced despair after Big Mom summoned Zeus and Prometheus back to her side and charged towards the Sunny. After Big Mom landed on the deck, Jinbe told his group to prepare to abandon ship. As she was tearing the ship apart, Jinbe tried telling her that there was no cake on the Sunny, but she refused to believe him and attacked him with Napoleon, sending him flying into the ocean.

However, Jinbe returned to douse Prometheus' flames with a wave of water before racing to Big Mom and hitting her with his Buraikan technique. The attack forced Big Mom off the Sunny, but she was rescued by Zeus. Big Mom prepared to slice the whole ship in half, but Nami and Brook worked together to manipulate Zeus into discharging all its power, engulfing Big Mom in a massive blast of lightning. The group on the Sunny quickly moved to escape, but Big Mom continued pursuing them. As Big Mom chased after the Thousand Sunny with Prometheus in gigantic size, Jinbe commented that even ocean water would not help.

As the Nostra Castello approached the Thousand Sunny, Jinbe was relieved to see Sanji again. After Pudding brought Sanji to the Straw Hats' ship, the group happily welcomed Sanji back. With the Fire Tank Pirates luring Big Mom away with the cake, the Straw Hats continued on to Cacao Island to retrieve Luffy. On the way, the group on the Sunny learned from Sanji that the Big Mom Pirates were aware of their rendezvous point. After Sanji and Pudding went ahead to Cacao Island to help Luffy, the group on the Sunny evaded Smoothie's attacks.

While steering the Sunny, Jinbe put his trust in Nami's navigational commands. As the promised rendezvous time drew near, Nami pointed out that Luffy needed Brûlée in order to leave the Mirro-World, causing the group to become concerned, given Luffy's absent-mindedness. With a few minutes remaining, Cacao Island was in sight. As they approached the island, they saw the massive fleet that the Big Mom Pirates assembled there. They were overjoyed to hear from Sanji that Luffy made it out of the Mirro-World.

The group was then bewildered when they saw the Big Mom Pirates' fleet suddenly engulfed in flames. As they witnessed Germa 66 attacking the Big Mom Pirates, Sanji told them to sail past the port at full speed. The Sunny group did so and they were overjoyed to see Sanji and Luffy coming towards them. Luffy and Sanji returned to the Sunny and the group quickly made their retreat from Cacao Island. The group was then besieged by Smoothie's fleet, but Judge came to their rescue.

After the Sunny passed by Judge's castle, the group later saw enemy ships approaching them from the front and when the situation grew more dire, they were surprised when Wadatsumi appeared and attacked the enemy. Jinbe then dived underwater and saw that the Sun Pirates had arrived to assist him. The Sun Pirates cleared a path for the Sunny. However, despite their efforts, the Sunny was intercepted and attacked by the Queen Mama Chanter. Wadatsumi saved the Sunny by switching it with the Sun Pirates' ship and hid the Sunny in his mouth. Wadatsumi tried swimming away, but Oven attacked him with heat waves, forcing him to spit out the Sunny. As he watched the Sun Pirates hold back the Big Mom Pirates, Jinbe decided to stay behind to help them. Luffy consented to Jinbe's decision but reminded him that as an official member of the Straw Hats, Jinbe must survive and meet up with the rest of the crew at Wano. After instructing Nami to sail the Sunny as fast and far as possible, Jinbe joined his former crew in battle. Jinbe and the Sun Pirates were able to ensure the Thousand Sunny's escape. However, before they could retreat, Big Mom arrived at Cacao Island.

Wano Country Arc

Jinbe successfully escaped Totto Land with the Sun Pirates. After he tended to the injured members, his former crew gave him a send-off. Jinbe later arrived at Wano on the day of the Fire Festival just in time to destroy a Beasts Pirates battleship that was sinking rebel ships with long-range cannons. Having reintroduced himself, Jinbe joined the crew and the raid on Onigashima. After his reunion with the Straw Hats, Jinbe and his new crewmates took over the torii in front of Onigashima.

The Straw Hats then arrived at Onigashima with the rebels and Jinbe went on to hide the Sunny. After disembarking, the Straw Hats received Beasts Pirates disguises from Kin'emon. Jinbe informed the crew that Luffy followed after Kid and Zoro followed after Luffy. While the other Straw Hats used the Kurosai FR-U IV and the Brachio Tank V to travel, Jinbe and Robin decided to proceed on foot. Jinbe, Robin, and several rebels later infiltrated the Performance Stage in the Skull Dome, where they found Momonosuke tied to a crucifix.

Robin asked him what they could do for Momonosuke, but Jinbe told her to wait for the time to strike. When Big Mom later arrived on stage, Jinbe was shocked when he saw that Big Mom had captured Nami and Carrot. Jinbe then witnessed Kaidou announce his plans for his New Onigashima Project. As the battle on the Live Stage was unfolding, Big Mom attempted to attack Franky, but Jinbe and Robin worked together and successfully threw Big Mom off of the stage. Once the rest of the crew arrived, all of the Straw Hats assembled on the Live Stage.

Two of the Numbers charged toward the Straw Hats. The samurai struggled to bring down Goki, so Zoro cut through its club and Jinbe saved some samurai from the falling piece while Luffy went on to knock out the Number. After defeating the other Number Jaki, Drake requested to fight alongside Luffy. Jinbe refused to trust him because of the Pirate's Code of Honor, but Luffy was willing to allow it, which frustrated Jinbe. When Hatcha sobered up, Jinbe told Franky to lure him away outside with the General Franky.

Jinbe later joined up with Luffy and Sanji at the first basement level. After defeating Briscola, Jinbe offered to escort Luffy to the roof. Sanji pointed out that he had been doing that already, so they agreed to both lead Luffy. When the trio reached the first level of the castle, Jinbe and Sanji defeated Hamlet and Fourtricks without stopping. As they went through the third level, Sanji separated from Luffy and Jinbe.

The two ran into rebels from Udon who had built a ladder to the fourth level, bypassing the Beasts Pirates guarding the stairs. Due to numerous strong enemies in the fourth floor's Nekoka-fé, Jinbe decided to remain to hold them back while Luffy went forward. Jinbe was then confronted by Who's-Who. While fighting Who's-Who and his subordinates, Jinbe heard Sanji's cry for help broadcasted throughout Onigashima. Jinbe refused to back down despite being outnumbered.

However, once Tama's ability activated, the Gifters turned against the other Beasts Pirates, leaving Jinbe to face Who's-Who one-on-one. Who's-Who revealed himself to be a Rokushiki user. After deflecting a Rankyaku, he questioned if he should refer to Armament Haki as Tekkai. Jinbe then recalled hearing about a CP9 agent who had been imprisoned. As Who's-Who transformed into his Human-Beast form, he divulged that he was indeed that agent and then used his unique Shigan variant, Gagan, but Jinbe dodged it.

Who's-Who also admitted that the grudge he held for Jinbe's connection with Luffy, the one who had eaten the Gomu Gomu no Mi, as well as Shanks who had stolen the fruit. Jinbe deflected another Gagan but was injured by it, so he chose to dodge Who's-Who's following barrage. Who's-Who complimented the fish-man's speed on land, which Jinbe found to be racist. Who's-Who charged at Jinbe, but the fish-man blocked him and then threw him over the shoulder. Jinbe's anger grew when Who's-Who asked if he knew of the legend of Nika because of fish-men's and the Sun Pirates' histories in slavery.

As Who's-Who's Shigan "Madara" repeatedly struck Jinbe, the fish-man endured the hits until the Tobiroppo's fingers broke against Jinbe's Haki. Jinbe then broke Who's-Who's wrists, stepped on his tail, and finished him off with Gyojin Karate Ogi: Onigawara Seiken, while also warning Who's-Who for mouthing off about history. Brook later contacted Jinbe and passed on information about his and Robin's current situation and the fire on the third floor, and Jinbe wondered who was holding up Kaidou on the roof. On the second floor, Jinbe held up a ceiling that had almost collapsed on top of a group of fleeing samurai. He worried about how quickly the fire was spreading and how many it would kill.

While moving through the third floor, Jinbe found Raizo who had collapsed after defeating Fukurokuju. When Raizo noticed Jinbe approaching, Raizo told Jinbe about his plan with Jinbe assisting. Jinbe then grabbed the water Raizo had stored inside one of his scrolls with Kairyu Ipponzeoi, sending the water into the levels below and inside the rest of the castle to douse the fire that had spread throughout the Skull Dome. After the Raid concluded, Jinbe was formally introduced to Yamato, who declared to be from now on their new crew member, joining them as Kouzuki Oden; however, Jinbe was not convinced until Luffy said Yamato would join them. When Yamato yelled at some Beasts Pirates to stay put, Jinbe said he did not think Yamato looked like an enemy.

A week later, Luffy and Zoro awoke, and Jinbe explained to Luffy that Yamato had willingly forfeited eating anything until they woke up due to a tradition in Wano. Jinbe was the only Straw Hat to stay at the castle for a banquet, while the rest of the alliance (minus Robin) was celebrating another festival in the capital. Later that night, Jinbe, along with Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro, watched Aramaki's fight with Denjiro, Raizo, Kawamatsu, Inuarashi, Nekomamushi, Shinobu, Yamato, and Momonosuke from afar. As Aramaki left, Jinbe commented on how powerful the Supreme King Haki he suddenly felt was. Yamato then joined them and told them that he had decided to stay in the country to protect it from the threats that would want to invade. Jinbe then watched as Marco flew off and told Luffy that he was leaving on a passing ship. When Luffy thanked him for helping during the Summit War, Marco told him that they were all prepared to do it then, and asked Jinbe what the reason was, to which Jinbe laughed and claimed that he could not remember anymore. After the festival, the crew gathered at the Flower Capital's castle, where Robin revealed that Pluton was in Wano Country. However, they were interrupted by Shinobu and Tama. As the crew was about to set sail, Kin'emon, Momonosuke, and Yamato arrived to say goodbye, and Momonosuke in tears begged Luffy not to leave. Luffy gave Momonosuke a flag with the Straw Hats' Jolly Roger and declared Wano under his protection. As the Straw Hats set sail, Kid urged Luffy and Law to take their boats over the Climbing-Koi Waterfall, which they promptly did.

Utas Past Arc

The Straw Hats spent a lazy day out at sea on the Sunny, while listening to a Tone Dial playing Uta's new song, New Genesis. Later, after everyone on the crew showed interest in the singer, the crew begged Luffy to attend Uta's concert, and the captain agreed, and the Sunny set course to Elegia.

One Piece Film Red

Uta organized a concert on Elegia in order to realize her dream of performing for the whole world. Jinbe was present during the concert.

Final Saga

Egghead Arc

Aboard the ship, when Nami locked Luffy in a cage as punishment for endangering the lives of the crew members, Jinbe told Nami to calm down, resulting in her scolding him, leading to Jinbe being scared of her to the point of believing that she had Supreme King Haki, with Chopper advising him to stay away from Nami when she is angry. Robin then received the newspaper where she announced the new rewards. When Sanji became depressed at seeing his new bounty, Jinbe asked if everything was alright, to which Zoro told him not to worry. When the crew heard the news of Cobra's murder at the hands of Sabo and Vivi's disappearance, they all argued over the matter, where Jinbe commented that the last Levely must have been a total disaster. Following the discussion, Luffy told everyone about the promise he, Sabo, and Ace made as children, stating the ultimate goal of their dream, which shocked everyone.

After hearing that, Jinbe found it very funny and had chosen a very troublesome captain. A few days later, the crew entered a stretch of sea in harsh winter weather. Jinbe, seeing this how strong the wind was, asked his companions to retract the sails and Nami how much longer to reach the island, who replied that they had entered the climatic range of the island and that is why, they were close to a winter island. At that moment, a huge whirlpool suspended in the air approached the crew, so Nami asked Jinbe to get everyone out of here or they would all end up doomed, to which Jinbe agreed. However, Luffy and Sanji noticed that there was someone in the water, so Zoro cut the whirlpool in half which led to Chopper suddenly being blown away by a strong gust of wind, so Luffy grabbed him but Chopper got too swept away, with Usopp revealing that there was a person in the whirlpool, a girl.

Suddenly, a giant shark appeared below them, nearly destroying the ship. After managing to avoid the creature's bite, Jinbe realized that Luffy, Chopper, and the girl had ended up in the sea, so he asked Franky to hold the helm while he dove in to rescue them. Jinbe arrived just in time and rescued all three of them, wondering where the explosion came from. As he got out of the water, he saw the current being too strong and using the rudder would not be enough. However, at that moment, he realized that the shark was aiming a cannon at them from its mouth, so he took the all of them out the proximity of the shark, diving below the water again.

He then managed to bring the group into a cave on an island. After drying their clothes, the girl, who turned into a woman, introduced herself as Jewelry Bonney. Jinbe then wondered what happened to her crew, but she replied she arrived at the island alone, as the Mecha-Shark ate her boat and she got hungry now. When Bonney revealed she came to Egghead to make Vegapunk pay for his crime for transforming her father into an emotionless cyborg, Jinbe agreed with her. After climbing some stairs, the group reached the surface of the island and was amazed.

Being there, Luffy tried to ride a space monster, but he went through it without even touching it, then along with Bonney and Chopper, they tried to eat a deliciously looking dessert, even despite Jinbe warning them that it might be a trap. When they could not touch it either, Jinbe realized that these were holograms, in addition that there was no cold weather despite what they had witnessed outside at sea. Suddenly, Atlas appears and explains why this was this way. After the girl had finished explaining about the food machine and her technological gloves, Jinbe asked her who she was, to which she replied that she was Vegapunk. After Atlas had departed to return to her work, the group made their way through the city, with Luffy changing his clothes with one of Vegapunk's inventions, with the rest of the group following as well.

Suddenly, a Pacifista appeared who attacked them for mistakingly thinking they stole food and clothes. However, as Luffy was about to attack the Pacifista, Bonney tearfully begged him not to, stating he looked just like her father, making Jinbe realize she spoke about Bartholomew Kuma earlier. They managed to escape from the Pacifista thanks to Bonney's powers and ended up in the junkyard. Jinbe and Bonney had a conversation about Kuma's past and his reasonings behind becoming a Pacifista, with Bonney becoming furious over Jinbe's statement that Kuma used to be a tyrant. After they had finished their conversation, she turned everyone back to their normal ages.

Later, the group came across a giant rusty robot, to which Bonney wondered if it could really move Jinbe commented that even despite it might working futuristically, it looked very old. The group was then surprised to see the real Vegapunk appear out of the robot after Luffy and Chopper pulled him out. After this, Vegapunk began to talk about his head, his satellites and how Punk Records was created, also adding the plan he had with the latter. After Jinbe tells her of his concerns about so, Vegapunk is attacked by Bonney. Although Jinbe fails to calm her down, she is herself then passed out when the saber she used attracted a horde of insects.

Jinbe then listened to Vegapunk's explanations about Momonosuke's artificial fruit and the Iron Giant. When he asked Luffy to take him with him, Vegapunk revealed his reasons for that, as well as telling them about his ultimate goal of providing free energy for everyone. Suddenly they heard an explosion, to which Vegapunk told them that it must be CP0 to eliminate him; Jinbe had to explain to Luffy the difference between these and CP9. Although Jinbe was concerned about the risk of taking Vegapunk with them, Luffy agreed without hesitation. Before disappearing, Vegapunk asked them to take Bonney to Labophase, where he would meet them later.

As Luffy's group started to head to the requested location, they came across CP0. Seeing them, Jinbe commented that they really were after Vegapunk. Luffy then handed over the unconscious Bonney to Jinbe who in turn handed her over to Chopper so he could carry Atlas, who was knocked out by Lucci earlier. As they continue on their way, Jinbe and Chopper ask Luffy, who was fighting with Lucci, to stop. Soon after Sentomaru appeared with the Seraphim S-Snake, S-Hawk and S-Shark; Jinbe was stunned to see that even though they were children, they resembled the ancient Warlords of the Sea.

S-Snake then showed them the way to the Void Rocket, which would take them to the Labophase, with Jinbe thanking the Seraphim. The group was then joined by Luffy, who had completed his fight with Lucci. Bonney, who then woke up, was horrified at Luffy's exhausted state, but Jinbe reassured her that it was truly Luffy. They then arrived at the lab, where he leaves Atlas to be repaired. After Bonney left them to continue her objective, they would meet up with some of the Straw Hats and the Vegapunks.

He then overheard Shaka's conversation with Stussy, where he finds out that she was actually a spy of Vegapunk. Once Zoro, Brook, and Stussy arrive, Shaka explained that Vegapunk's main body was missing, plus the security system was down, which meant they were trapped inside the lab. Jinbe later joined everyone in their search for Vegapunk, pairing up with Sanji and Stussy. When they reached the second floor of Building B; Jinbe commented on how big the place really was. As they were walking, Sanji left to help Nami, so he and Stussy continued to look for Vegapunk, as Stussy received a call from Sentomaru, who explained to Stussy about Kizaru heads towards Egghead and the dire situation, with both flying in a direction while she was making the call.

Later, when York was subdued, Jinbe met with the rest of the crew along with his other allies, where they used the satellite as a hostage and forced her to contact the Five Elders, in order to reveal the situation and the World Government's plans. While he ate, he listened as York did all this, until she asked the Five Elders for help. When Franky revealed that a restrained S-Snake unpetrified him and their crewmates due to her Luffy asking her, Jinbe laughed finding it funny Hancock's extreme love for Luffy remained in a clone. Later, Jinbe and Sanji went to Building A to look for Vegapunk's luggage; however, they were informed that Bonney was in trouble at Fabiriophase. Therefore, Sanji offered to help rescue her, while Jinbe informed Vegapunk that they already have all her luggage ready, so he will go to the back exit and wait for them there.

Jinbe sensed Jaygarcia Saturn's arrival on the island and wondered who it was. Shortly after, Nami contacted Jinbe to inform him on Zoro's whereabouts so he could provide backup in his fight against Lucci and to prevent Zoro from getting lost. As Jinbe made his way across the island, he talked to himself on how the crew should be ready to leave at any moment and how it was not the time for Zoro to be fighting. Jinbe then contacted the rest of the crew and promised in order to escape, he would drag Zoro back with him even if Zoro was not done fighting Lucci. When Jinbe arrived at the scene, he notified Sanji the fight was still ongoing, but to Jinbe's surprise, Zoro managed to heavily wound Lucci.

At the same time, Jinbe spotted Marcus Mars in his itsumade form and was rattled by its preposterous Haki. Jinbe asked Zoro if his fight with Lucci was concluded only for both of them to spot that Lucci was still standing and drawing near. Jinbe grabbed Zoro, telling him he won already, and used Gosenmaigawara Shuto to create a dust cloud in front of Lucci, allowing both of them to flee. As Jinbe carried Zoro to the Thousand Sunny, they spotted Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro in his Hybrid Form, who was also running toward the ship.

When Nusjoro attacked the ship, Jinbe threw Zoro with Kata Guruma so that he could intercept the sword strike. After the brief clash, Jinbe caught Zoro who had been repelled from the impact. As the two made it onto the Sunny, Zoro once again told everyone to take off, but Lilith said they could not with Nusjuro still on their tail, as a single interference from him could prevent their escape. Before she could continue, Atlas arrived and punched Lilith unconscious into the ground, then snapped a switch behind her head. Atlas told the Straw Hats to take care of Lilith and go, as she sacrificed herself to ensure their escape. While Atlas sacrificed herself to hold off Nusjuro, Jinbe took the helm and activated the Coup De Burst, sending the Sunny flying down to the sea, with Usopp and Chopper holding onto him. As the Sunny finally landed safely in the sea, the crew sailed away from Egghead alongside the Giant Warrior Pirates, setting course for Elbaph. Not long after, the Giants attempted a celebration , but decided to cancel it so that Luffy could recover and mourn the apparent loss of Vegapunk. During the downtime, Jinbe conversed with Zoro and Franky over the miracle that was their escape from Egghead. Jinbe expressed his surprise in Luffy's status of mourning for Vegapunk, wondering why his captain would be so down over it when they were able to escape with their entire crew still intact. Later, Jinbe joined in on the actual party, happily celebrating amongst his friends.

Elbaph Arc

Sometime after the celebration, only Jinbe, Franky, Robin, and Brook remained on the Great Eirik, as the original six Straw Hats all mysteriously disappeared. Even though they searched everywhere, with Jinbe even asking some sharks roaming the seas around them, their search was unsuccessful and they later called off the search for the Thousand Sunny and instead decide to sail to Elbaph to reunite with Luffy's group. Jinbe was later listening when Robin read the newspapers, being surprised how the Egghead Incident was being portrayed, with it framing the Straw Hat Pirates as attacking the island with the Giant Warrior Pirates and Luffy killing Vegapunk as well as Dorry and Broggy having reactivated bounty posters. As the giants discussed the current situation happening on Elbaph, with Hajrudin having to stay behind after his brother, who was dubbed the "Accursed Prince", had killed their father. Jinbe correctly suspected this to be Loki, as the giants explained he had killed the king to obtain a legendary Devil Fruit which was said to have been passed down the royal family and due to this cruel act, he had been chained up on Elbaph, though it shocked everyone to find out it took all of Elbaph's warriors to do that and that Elbaph would end should Loki ever be released from his prison.

Later, Brook finished giving Robin a haircut, and Jinbe praised him for a job well done. Franky and the others remarked how Robin's new hairstyle closely resembled her look from two years prior. Dorry and Broggy, curious about the change, learned that Robin had styled her hair specifically for her reunion with Jaguar D. Saul. As the ship reached Elbaph's shores, the Giant Warrior Pirates led the way toward a rainbow that stretched up to a massive tree in the distance, explaining that they were headed to their village.

When the ship began riding the rainbow, Jinbe and the others were astonished by the journey. Hajrudin and Stansen joined them aboard their own ship midway. After some explanations from Broggy, the ship arrived at the Sun World in Elbaph, and everyone aboard was mesmerized by the sight of the village, Jinbe included. Shortly after, Luffy's group arrived and reunited with the rest of the crew and the Giant Warrior Pirates, meeting the remaining members of the New Giant Warrior Pirates. Although Hajrudin planned a feast, the crew decided that Robin's reunion with Saul was the priority.

They set off on a Svarr piloted by Gerd. Upon arrival at the Warrior's Spring, they learned that Saul had fallen and could not get back up. While some of the crew felt annoyed or worried, Robin approached Saul, quickly realizing that he was fine and simply trying to greet her. The two finally had the chance to properly talk, and Robin and Saul embraced. The sight filled all the Straw Hats with joy, with many of them(save for Jinbe, Luffy, and Zoro) bursting into tears at the touching reunion.

Following Luffy's meeting with Saul and his assistant, Ange, the crew left the beach to visit the Walrus School. After a few antics involving Luffy, Usopp, and the biology teacher, Ripley, and her son, Colon, the Straw Hats planned to split into separate groups, in order to see the separate parts of Elbaph. However, before they could set out, a sheepish Gerd offered up human-sized clothes that she had made herself. Jinbe was surprised at how comfortable the clothing was to wear. Afterward, Jinbe returned to the banquet alongside Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Usopp, Zoro, and Brook, where they received a large cheer for their exploits.

During the festivities, a few of the giants approached Jinbe about his appearance, as they had never seen a fish-man before. Jinbe was happy to inform them that his homeland of Fish-Man Island featured a much-wider array of people, exciting them. Sometime later, Scopper Gaban was brought up at the banquet, as he had been a resident of Elbaph for a while, as the lover of Ripley, and the father of Colon. Oimo mentioned an old story of how Gaban managed to gain his epithet of "Mountain Eater", which was by defending a hospital in the mountains from hundreds of pirates by himself with a pair of axes while Roger was being taken care of within. The end result of the battle left the mountain completely bare of any trees.

Jinbe commented afterward that it was a well-known tale. Following Nami's return to the banquet, a drunken Usopp got himself involved in a situation after smacking the sword lodged in Jarul's head, nearly killing him. Jinbe was amused, and simply considered Usopp to be having the time of his life. Not long after, the banquet ended up being canceled as a call came in about "monsters" attacking the Walrus School. In addition, a fire had been started on Branch 8 by a partially-freed Loki.

Before they could be moved to a safe location, Nami flagged down Jarul and informed him that intruders were likely on Elbaph, and offered her crew's services in tracking them down. Jinbe added that the culprit more than likely wielded a devil fruit ability of some sort. While he was happy to use the information, Jarul rejected their request to help, on the grounds that they, as guests, shouldn't have to worry about defending a foreign nation. Despite that, the Straw Hats were unable to simply sit around and wait, and conspired to assist in locating the intruders, while the giants fought the off the MMA. Not far from their location, Colon was packing a svarr with the intent of fighting as well, giving them an opportunity to take to the skies for the search.

When the Straw Hats offered their services, Colon was ecstatic at the prospect of "leading" his own crew, and proclaimed himself to be "captain" of the "Colon Pirates". As they sailed through the skies of Elbaph, the crew came across sleepwalking children, being directed straight through a fire. Acting quickly, Jinbe used Umigumo Ipponzeoi to throw a large amount of water onto the fire, saving the children's lives. Jinbe's subsequent celebration on the svarr was cut short by the sudden arrival of Gunko, a member of the God's Knights. The Straw Hats immediately came to the conclusion that Gunko was one of the human intruders on Elbaph, but were confused by her negative reaction to actually being called a human.

After further questioning, each of the Straw Hats came to the realization that they were facing a World Noble, and subsequently attempted to fight her. Jinbe stood aside as Usopp and Nami tried their attacks, but to no avail, as Gunko's devil fruit allowed her to redirect their attacks, and a strange regenerative ability made permanently damaging her seemingly impossible. After she subdued Colon, Jinbe and Brook moved to attack her, but found their attacks redirected at each other instead, causing friendly fire. The fight concluded with each of the Straw Hats flung from the svarr, unable to save Colon from his new captor. Shortly afterward, Gunko dropped Colon off with the rest of the hostages, before tying up each of the Straw Hats and taking them to Sommers' location.

While there, Nami berated Jinbe for his failure to protect them, while struggled to find a way to counter Gunko's ability. The momentary silence was arbuptly ended by Gunko suddenly issuing a threat to Brook. She demanded that he return to Mary Geoise with her and be forced to make music for her for the rest of his life. Jinbe was surprised at how much of a fan Gunko was of Brook's music. However, Brook rejected the offer on the grounds that his loyalty lied with Luffy, and resultantly attacked by Gunko for it while his crewmates cried out for him.

Afterward, Gunko left Brook wrapped up like a mummy while Sommers continued with his ultimatum. Fortunately, Robin decided at that moment to make a move, and used her Devil Fruit to attack Sommers. Jinbe warned Robin to be careful, and was shocked when Robin apparently tackled Sommers off of the branch they were on . However, he found peace of mind when the actual Robin appeared to free them; the Robin that tackled Sommers was a clone. While there was overall relief for a moment, it was dissolved upon realization that Gunko's bindings were simply too thick to cut through.

To make matters worse, Sommers had used his own Devil Fruit powers to ascend back to the branch, and proceeded to bind Robin in a bush of thorns. Jinbe was concerned for Robin, but a quick last-minute maneuver by Gaban was enough to stop Sommers. The Straw Hats were collectively shocked to see Gaban as someone actually capable of wounding one of the immortal God's Knights. While Gaban continued to scuffle with Sommers, Nami revealed their savior's identity to her friends, further surprising them. Robin attempted to free herself to assist, but Jinbe warned her against it, informing her that her fighting style was a poor matchup against Sommers'.

Consecutively, Gaban managed to land a critical slash, bypassing Sommers immortality, and leaving him as nothing more than a head on the ground. Since Gaban was in a rush to save his son, he left the Straw Hats tied up, forcing them to think up their own escape plan. However, before they could do so, the Straw Hats were shocked to see that Sommers was still alive, and had reattached his head to his body. Jinbe noted Gunko's current appearance as unrecognizable (unaware that she had been possessed by Imu). When Robin attempted to escape her thorny binds, Jinbe worriedly asked her why, leading to her informing him that she was unable to simply sit around and let them be captured. Meanwhile, Imu arrived on Elbaph via possessing Gunko's body, before being confronted by the Giant Warrior Pirates. Imu used their strange powers to forcibly convert multiple members, including Dorry and Brogy, into Demons. The demonic versions of the Straw Hat's allies abandoned their previously good-hearted demeanors in favor of obeying Imu's order to kill Jarul. Jinbe grew greatly concerned as he watched them pass by in the distance.

Jinbe/Misc.

Introduction

Early Concepts

In One Piece Green: Secret Pieces, some early concepts of Jinbe were revealed. Apparently, he was originally designed to look more like an umibozu of Japanese folklore, with a gallant, but also have a hotheaded personality befitting a mafia boss. Moreover, according to the Vivre Card databook, Jinbe was originally supposed to be an actual antagonist, who was, in fact, controlling Arlong from the shadows. As an early member of the Straw Hats, Jinbe was going to be a Helmsman named "Saigo" and described as a good friend of Roronoa Zoro.

Anime And Manga Differences

Impel Down Arc

In the manga, Minozebra and Minorhinoceros are defeated by Crocodile's Sables and Jinbe's Gosenmaigawara Seiken respectively. In the anime, Minozebra is defeated by Jinbe and Minorhinoceros is defeated by Crocodile.

Marineford Arc

In Episode 470, Jinbe had a short duel with Mihawk during the Summit War of Marineford which was not seen happening in the manga. During the battle, Jinbe comes to Luffy's aid and challenges the swordsman. He uses his Fish-Man Karate to slow the oncoming cannon balls shot at him that Mihawk then cuts. The two then engage in a short clash, sending Jinbe flying back as Mihawk continues to pursue Luffy. Jinbe turned around for a brief moment when Whitebeard died. Jinbe's flashback of Ace and Luffy was longer. The scene where Akainu attacked Jinbe and Luffy was extended along with exchange in dialogue. Aokiji's and Kizaru's attacks on the Heart Pirates, Luffy, and Jinbe were shown in greater depth.

Postwar Arc

When the Heart Pirates arrive at Amazon Lily in the anime, they enter the harbor with the Kuja Pirates. Jinbe had to convince Elder Nyon that Law is needed to treat Luffy's wounds.

Fishman Island Arc

The anime added a scene of Jinbe in a bar stopping some human pirates from causing a scene. The scene in which Arlong was telling Jinbe that he's beating already unconscious marines is omitted in the anime. During Rear Admiral Strawberry's explanation of the Sun Pirates, which shows the silhouettes of Tiger, Jinbe, and Arlong, Jinbe's silhouette is incorrectly shown with its current appearance of 46 years, instead of its appearance 31 years, as a member of the Sun Pirates. The anime also added a scene in which a marine provoked Jinbe. The anime shows Jinbe directly attacking Rear Admiral Strawberry. In the anime, Tiger's last flashback shows that he had to fight other fish-men to gain leadership of the Fish-Man District, including Jinbe and Arlong. The fight between Arlong and Jinbe is extended. In the manga, the talk between Arlong and Jinbe, about his becoming a Warlord of the Sea happens at Impel Down, the fight between the two happens at an unknown island of the Grand Line, and the conversation between Jinbe and Aladine on Arlong not understanding the will of Tiger happens on the ship. But in the anime, all the scenes occur at the same unknown island.

Other Media

In One Piece Premier Show 2013, Jinbe and Kuzan come to aid the Straw Hat Pirates on Paradise Island. They fend off Doflamingo and chase away Caribou and Coribou, allowing Luffy to fight Lambor Bukini one-on-one and defeat the slave trader. Jinbe appears in Super Kabuki II: One Piece during the retelling of the Summit War Saga. Jinbe appears in One Piece Water Spectacle 2. Jinbe appears in the Zoro and Marineford versions of the Hungry Days commercials. A bronze statue of Jinbe was dedicated in Kumamoto as part of the Kumamoto Revival Project.

Translation And Dub Issues

His name comes from jinbei-zame (甚平鮫), which means "whale shark" in Japanese. It could also mean the type of clothing worn by Japanese during the summer, Jinbei. Jinbe's name is sometimes spelled as Jimbei because when pronouncing it, the n of the name often sounds like a m to some. However, the fourth databook and later Chapter 829 confirmed that the correct spelling is indeed Jinbe. The English versions spell his name as Jimbei.

However, the official Japanese website for One Piece: Burning Blood has the name "Jimbei" on his bounty. His epithet, Kaikyō, would normally translate into "Strait" or "Channel". However since the kanji for it is written as (海侠) and not (海峡), the kyō part (侠) of it comes from (任侠), an honorific used when addressing a high ranking yakuza member, thus making his epithet a Japanese pun. Because this honorific is used for addressing high ranking yakuza members, it does not have a literal English translation. The closest translations used of the epithet that can be interpreted into English are made up based on the pun's meaning. These include "Yakuza of the Sea" and "Knight of the Sea" among others. These however are not literal translations, but titles made to convey the idea behind the original Japanese term used. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation adaptations, his epithet is translated as "First Son of the Sea".

Trivia

As the rest of the Straw Hats, and some other characters, Jinbe has his own jolly roger. It is a rough drawing of his face with the Sun Pirates jolly roger in the background. As shown in SBS Volume 100, this jolly roger is in fact a reimagining of a user sent image. After his initial silhouette in Chapter 523, at the JUMP Festa 2009 Oda decided to a show a preview of Jinbe and drew a rough sketch of what he looked like. Among the Seven Warlords, Jinbe has a whale shark animal theme. He was also the only fish-man Warlord. In the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th fan polls of most popular characters, Jinbe was ranked 110th, 35th, 6th, and 18th, respectively, making him the most popular fish-man in the series. Jinbe is the first known fish-man able to use Armament Haki. While his name was first mentioned by Yosaku in the Arlong Park Arc when he was explaining about the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he was not formally introduced until the Impel Down Arc , 459 chapters later. Jinbe is the only known Warlord who is absolutely confirmed to have not eaten a Devil Fruit, given his ability to swim. Having been a member of the Big Mom Pirates and now the official Helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, Jinbe is one of only two confirmed characters to have sailed under more than one crew of the Four Emperors, the other being Marshall D. Teach, who is an Emperor himself.

Straw Hat Pirate Trivia

Jinbe is the first member to join the Straw Hat Pirates after the two-year timeskip. He is also the first member to join them since entering the New World. Although he was invited to join the crew after the battle with the New Fish-Man Pirates on Fish-Man Island, he did not officially accept the offer until crashing Big Mom's Tea Party on Whole Cake Island. Jinbe is the first member of the Straw Hat Pirates who was affiliated with the World Government. Jinbe is the only member of the Straw Hat Pirates arrived the Summit War of Marineford with Luffy, although he was not a member at that time.

At age 46 and 301 cm, Jinbe is the tallest and second oldest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Jinbe is the third member of the Straw Hat Pirates who was once the captain of his own pirate crew, with the first two being Usopp of the Usopp Pirates and Brook of the Rumbar Pirates. Similar to Brook, Jinbe became the captain after the previous captain had no longer been available (Yorki for Brook and Fisher Tiger for Jinbe). Jinbe is currently the only member of the Straw Hat Pirates to share the same blood type (F) as his captain. Although Luffy stated that Jinbe was his subordinate in Chapter 901, and Jinbe was stated to be a member of the Straw Hat Pirates in Vivre Card databook, he was notably excluded from other media depicting the current Straw Hats as a group while physically absent from the manga between Chapters 901-976.

Jinbe was not featured with the crew on any color spreads until Chapter 987. Chapter 967's cover is the exception, with Jinbe appearing in the promotion for A-ra-shi: Reborn. Jinbe was not included in any Straw Hats collectives in volumes until Volume 99. Jinbe has not been listed with the Straw Hats in the character pages at the beginning of volumes. Jinbe's name for Sanji's Raid Suit wearing persona was not revealed in SBS Volume 94. Jinbe's potential Devil Fruit was not revealed in SBS Volume 98. Jinbe is the only current member of the Straw Hat Pirates who was not featured in One Piece: Stampede. Jinbe is the only current member of the Straw Hat Pirates who was not featured in OVER THE TOP. While Jinbe does appear in DREAMIN' ON, he does not appear in any of the group shots of the crew until Episode 981. Jinbe is the only current member of the Straw Hat Pirates who is not known to have ever lived in one of the Four Blues (Chopper lived and trained on Torino Kingdom of South Blue during the timeskip). Out of all the Straw Hat Pirates, Jinbe currently has the longest gap between his first appearance (Chapter 528 and Episode 430) and officially joining the crew (Chapter 901 and Episode 876), a full 373 chapters and 446 episodes. During the second One Piece Knowledge King quiz, it was revealed that Jinbe would place tenth and last place in the 50-meters race from SBS Volume 85.

Sbsbased Trivia

A fan asked Katsuhisa Hōki which character was more difficult for him to voice in the anime adaptation of the manga, Jinbe or Gecko Moria, and the actor answered that he found Jinbe more difficult to voice because he found that Jinbe has led a life of twists and turns. Jinbe's favorite foods are mozuku seaweed in vinegar and fruits. Also, his favorite food from Wano Country is ochazuke. His least favorite food is parfait because it is hard for him to eat. He shares his like of fruits with Nami.

Jinbe swallows ice cubes. Jinbe's favorite dish to cook is bonito tataki. Jinbe likes fried egg, sunny side up, steamed with salt. Jinbe has the highest tolerance to alcohol among the Straw Hat Pirates. Jinbe's favorite type of island and season is autumn on a summer island.

Jinbe's specific number is 10. Jinbe's specific color is ochre. Jinbe smells like sea. If the Straw Hat Pirates were a family, then Jinbe would be the father. Jinbe's animal resemblances is a bear.

If One Piece was set in the real world, then Jinbe would be from India. In Japan, Orectolobiformes, the order that whale sharks are classified within, is called Tenjiku-Zame (テンジクザメ?) where Tenjiku (天竺?) means Tianzhu, the historical Chinese name for India. Jinbe's thoughts are "Virtue, Virtue, Fist, Water, Wiseness", and like the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates, "Friendship". When a fan asked which flower Jinbe resembles the most, Oda answered he most resembles a peony. Jinbe represents the prefecture of Kagoshima. Jinbe typically sleeps at 3:00 A.M. and wakes up at 9:00 A.M. Oda revealed some details about Jinbe twice, first in Vivre Card and then in SBS. If the Straw Hat Pirates were not pirates, then Jinbe would be a train station attendant. If Jinbe were to be given a Devil Fruit, he would have any model of the Tori Tori no Mi, in order to compensate the loss of his swimming abilities with flight. In SBS 110, Oda showed Jinbe's possible appearances at ages 60 and 80 in two separate timelines.
