Summary

Marin seemed quite tired and distressed while swimming in his aquarium-like cell, since he is not a real mermaid and cannot breathe underwater.

History

Summit War Saga

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

Sometime before he was presented to Luffy, Hatchan, and Pappag while they were searching slave shops for Camie, he was captured by slavers and became a slave. Marin was restrained by a chain collar and could barely swim in his aquarium-like cell. The owner of the slave shop presented him to the group, but the terrible disguise did not fool them.

Anime And Manga Differences

Summary

In the anime, Marin was sitting on a couch in the slave shop, smoking, when Luffy's group entered the shop. He glared at Pappag as they entered. When Luffy's group began looking through the store, the owner sent Marin off; shortly after, he appeared in the cell, and Pappag noted that it was the same person from earlier. What this implies about Marin's position is unclear, but he does still appear to be a slave, as the shop owner was prepared to sell him.

Trivia

Summary

Marin is a French word that translates to sailor, or "from the sea".
