Personality

Summary

Road seems to be a very careful and intricate person, who cares deeply for the lands of which he rules over. Upon witnessing Muginn and Hilmungardr be injured by the Straw Hat Pirates, he was outraged and sought revenge. However, there appears to be an extent to this apparent care, as he burst into laughter after finding out Glutbunny had been killed, finding the action to be entertaining. He also appears to have a prideful side, being greatly annoyed at his captain's insistence on following Luffy, a human. His pride causes him to underestimate humans, believing he could hold half the Straw Hats in his personal diorama forever. He seems to enjoy role-playing to the point of developing a God complex, ruling over his own diorama as the "Sun God", while instinctively calling the guardians he placed there as his "pets" before correcting himself by referring them as his "servants". In addition, he showed a bit of perversion toward Nami, referring to her as his "idol". This perversion tends to lead him to desperate actions, as when he spotted Nami and Chopper, he attempted to catch them with the intent of locking them up once more. This led him to completely overlook an obvious trap that the Straw Hats set up. This perversion has shown to extend to desiring to be punished by Gerd, as well as Nami. Due to his actions, Gerd considers him to be a greater shame than even Loki, who was regarded as the greatest shame of Elbaph. He also appears to have a bit of a superstitious side, becoming frightened about the prospect of being possessed by a demon. Unlike most other giants, Road has little care for the rest of the world, and would prefer they simply release Loki so that he could rampage elsewhere. Like many other characters, he has a unique laugh: "Defufufufu" (デフフフフ?).

Relationships

Crew

Some of Road's crewmates appear to dislike him, and only tolerate his presence as a result of his great skill in navigation. However, this tolerance only goes so far, as Gerd and Goldberg both furiously attacked him for his mistreatment of the Straw Hats. Gerd especially dislikes Road and hates being in the same pirate crew as him. In turn, Road did not agree with his captain, Hajrudin's choice to swear fealty to the Straw Hat Pirates, and even acted behind his back to capture the Straw Hats as his toys. He was also delusional to think that his crew would save him when he fell into the Straw Hats' trap despite being chased by them moments ago, only to be proven wrong when they instead attacked him for his misdeeds. Upon Hajrudin planning to introduce his crew to the Straw Hats, he mentioned only four members, clearly neglecting Road. Despite this, he has a strange fascination with Gerd, and desires for her to punish him when he does wrong. Despite his misdeeds and underhanded tactics, however, he has shown that he respects Hajrudin greatly as a friend and captain, and wants above all else to help him in achieving his dream. This is because Hajrudin was willing to befriend Road and acknowledges his map skills.

Straw Hat Pirates

Road first heard of the Straw Hats upon being informed of them by his captain, Hajrudin. He did not take them seriously, owing to his pride, and took advantage of an opportunity to capture them while they were unconscious. He was outraged when they managed to escape, and even pursued them with the intent of locking them up once more. He seems to have a particular like for Nami and Chopper, referring to Nami as his "idol" (Viz: Oshi) and both of them as "ultra-rare". Nami and Sanji in turn, initially greatly disliked him, and wanted to punish him for his actions, mainly changing Nami's clothes while she was unconscious. The only reason they didn't was because they didn't want to upset the other giants. Later, however, Nami grew to tolerate his presence, and "allowed" him to serve as her third servant (After Zeus and Sanji, respectively).

Pets

Road has a lot of giant animals as pets, all of whom he placed into his diorama as guardians. In his role-playing as the deity over his diorama, he referred them as his "servants". While initially angry at the Straw Hats for defeating all of his pets, he easily brushed it off moments later in his excitement of playing out a battle against the crew.

Land Of Gods Captives

While the human residents of the Land of Gods seemingly revere Road as a deity, they were, in fact, being abducted by his pet, Muginn, and being held against their will in his personal diorama. When the Straw Hats created an opening in the walls and distracted Road, the other captives saw this as a golden opportunity to escape from the self-proclaimed "Sun God".

Abilities And Powers

Summary

As a giant, Road likely possesses a large amount of physical power. Alongside Hajrudin, Gerd, Stansen, and Goldberg, he was an S Class member of Buggy's Delivery.

Navigation

As the New Giant Warrior Pirates' navigator, he has skills in navigation and cartography, having drawn sea charts since childhood that were of good enough quality to impress Hajrudin at the time. Road is particularly well-informed about the seas near Elbaph; he was able to quickly figure out that the Straw Hat Pirates that ended asleep in his possession were victims of a slumber-inducing sea mist zone during their voyage from Egghead. Hajrudin values Road's skills as a navigator enough to let him join the New Giant Warrior Pirates, despite Gerd's dislike of him.

Craftsmanship

In addition, Road is a skilled artisan, able to craft detailed and delicate human-sized clothes despite being a giant. He also constructed a large and intricate diorama world using blocks.

Weapons

Road wields a giant katana, but has not been seen using it. As the Sun God, he wields a staff with a sun-shaped emblem as the head and carries a shield. The staff head has a metallic net within it, although it was broken through by Sanji and Zoro.

History

Past

Road was born in a village in Elbaph around 63 years before the present day. His birth was celebrated at the start of the 12-day fast leading up to the Winter Solstice. When he was young, his strange habits led him to being bullied by his peers. However, Hajrudin was unbothered by this, and instead befriended Road after taking notice of his skill in drawing up sea charts. Sometime in the past, he converted an abandoned detention center in Elbaph into his personal residence, where he built a diorama. He would frequently abduct humans and imprison them in said diorama, and rule over them as their "Sun God". Such actions earned him the scorn of the other giants, with Gerd even considering Road to be more disgraceful than the regicidal Loki.

During The Timeskip

Many years later, Road and three other giants joined Hajrudin in his goal to revive the Giant Warrior Pirates. The crew became mercenaries for the pirate dispatch organization, Buggy's Delivery. During the duration of their service, the crew became the five top earners of the organization, as well as earning the rank of S-Class soldiers.

Whole Cake Island Saga

The Stories Of The Selfproclaimed Straw Hat Grand Fleet

Hajrudin pledged his crew's allegiance to the Straw Hat Pirates, and when he returned to Karai Bari Island, the New Giant Warrior Pirates informed Mohji of their resignation from the Buggy's Delivery before setting out to sea in the Naglfar as members of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Road openly expressed his disagreement about Hajrudin's choice to submit the crew to Monkey D. Luffy.

Final Saga

Elbaph Arc

Road was stunned when his pet Muginn brought him the Thousand Sunny along with several sleeping members of the Straw Hat Pirates. Realizing that the Straw Hats had passed through the Sleeping Mists that lie between Elbaph and Egghead, Road took advantage of the opportunity to imprison the Straw Hats inside the Land of Gods. Later, upon returning to his room, Road was horrified to witness the Straw Hat Pirates battling and injuring the "God" animals that guarded the exit to the Land of Gods. Seeking revenge, he gave chase and declared that the Straw Hats would not escape. While he was annoyed that Iscat was unwillingly helping the Straw Hats to escape, he was quick to intervene. He used his staff to try to entangle them within a metal net, while proclaiming escape was impossible. He was shocked to see the net fail, but was then distracted by a few of the citizens of his diorama informing him that the Ear God had been killed. He burst into laughter from the news, finding the Straw Hats to be entertaining, and admitting that he had underestimated their abilities. Moments later, after proclaiming that the Straw Hats would serve him, he was confused to see clouds collecting overhead. Angering Nami, she then electrocuted him by using Zeus, leaving him reeling. Road was apparently able to quickly recover, as not long after, he would flee from Gerd, Goldberg, and Piper up the bridge to Elbaph. Eventually, Road made it to the Sun World, where he once again came into contact with the Straw Hats. Either out of desperation or as a result of dull nature, he easily fell for their trap, leading to him being struck in the head by a large log, courtesy of Sanji. Although he attempted to get back up, Road was quickly put down again upon the arrival of Gerd and Goldberg, whom were both outraged by his mistreatment of the Straw Hats. The pair knocked him completely unconscious, and proceeded to take him back to the village, where he was crucified. During the banquet for the Straw Hats, he was taken down and took the chance to apologize for his previous actions. He was terrified when Zoro revealed how close he was to being killed in retaliation, and attempted to explain himself as simply trying to replicate the "Sun God" that everyone on Elbaph desired to mimic, to which other giants vouched for him. Later, when Luffy, Zoro, and Nami headed out with the intention to free Loki, Road happily served as a servant for Nami, and explained that none of the giants were likely to notice their disappearance. Upon arriving at Aurust Castle, Road was shocked to see that neither of the guards were at their posts, and the doors had been damaged. While hesitant to enter the structure due to his non-royalty status, Road was forced to follow along as the Straw Hats carelessly proceeded inside. As Road carried the Straw Hats through the castle, he explained that the further damage to the interior was as a result of a battle between Loki, his father Harald, and the various guards. Road began to tell the story of King Harald, explaining his history as the greatest king Elbaph had known, and a great warrior with the blood of ancient giants. Road went on to explain that Hajrudin was not considered next in line for the position, due to his status as being born of a giant from another kingdom, yet still desired to eventually gain the position. Road spoke highly of his captain's goals, and happily revealed his intent to assist Hajrudin in his dream. Moments later, Luffy yelled out, exclaiming that he had located the missing guards. Road stood silently by while Luffy argued with the newly-conscious guards about the identity of their attacker. The guards claimed that it had been Shanks, while Luffy argued that it had to have been someone else, since Shanks wouldn't do something so heinous without provocation. Eventually, they agreed that it had to have been someone else, and proceeded on further into the castle. On the way, Road mentioned that only one of the elderly giants, such as Jarul, would know the location of the key, but refused to consider asking, as it would be considered a crime to free Loki. The group proceeded on to the throne room, where they found a Magic Circle left in the center of the room for an unknown reason. Nami mentioned reading that they had been used to summon demons, which unnerved Road. To make matters worse, a voice suddenly echoed around them, causing Road to lose his composure and attempt to flee. Before he could, an axe was flung into the door, causing him to fall back and drop the Straw Hats. Upon looking back, Road finally connected the voice to that of "Ya-san"(in actuality, Scopper Gaban), a human resident of Elbaph, Ripley's lover, and Colon's father. Following a short greeting with a bit of antics, Gaban had Road move the throne, revealing the hidden treasure room behind it. The group proceeded down into the room, discovering the key to Loki's restraints. However, Gaban refused to let them simply take it, and challenged Luffy to a fight for it. Road was greatly confused by Gaban's provocation over the key, and nervously questioned his motives. While Luffy took the taunt seriously, Road begged for the pair to stop fighting, and stood by horrified when Gaban unleashed a serious attack, forcing Zoro to jump into the fight as well. Before any actual conflict could take place, Gaban simply surrendered and handed over the key, which earned him the ire and thanks of Luffy and Zoro. Before Road could reveal Gaban's actual identity to the Straw Hats, Gaban had him hold his tongue, and instead issued a request that they come meet him later, should they survive freeing Loki. After departing the castle, Nami and Road took the injured guards back to the village while Luffy and Zoro left to free Loki. On the way down, Road was forced to play defense while Nami carelessly complained about the goal of freeing Loki and her failure to find any treasure in the castle, as the injured guards were lucid enough to hear her. Road eventually delivered the injured guards to Gerd, who was suspicious of what had happened to them, and why Road would be up at the castle at all. Road attempted to lie about simply trying to find new material to make his diorama more accurate, but Gerd didn't fall for any of it, and attempted to force Road to speak using simple threats, before outright attacking him and forcing an explanation from him. The prospect of Loki being freed was enough to snap Road's entire crew into action, and they attempted to rush down to Elbaph's Underworld in a Svarr, but ended up simply falling, due to Svarrs not functioning in the low atmosphere. Luckily, they were saved by Luffy in time, and attempted to warn him of Loki's deceitful nature. However, they were too late, and stood horrified as Loki stood from the ground, almost fully free.

Trivia

Summary

Like several other Elbaph characters, Road's name likely references professional wrestling; in his case, the Road Warriors wrestling duo. Road's manner of speaking (modelled after Wano, and called Nami "his oshi") and hobbies are modelled after a stereotypical otaku/Weeaboo.
