Introduction

The Rocks Pirates were a legendary and powerful pirate crew that sailed the seas until their defeat at God Valley 38 years ago. They were led by Rocks D. Xebec and considered to be the most dangerous and strongest pirate crew of their time. They ruled the seas before the rise of Gol D. Roger and his crew.

Jolly Roger

The crew’s Jolly Roger is depicted as a burning red skull with flames that resemble two horns. It is shown as the O for “Rocks” on the sail of the ship.

Crew Members

Organization

The organization was founded by a dangerous band of pirates who gathered at Hachinosu. Their mutual quest for fame and fortune led to the formation of the crew. However, according to Sengoku, the Rocks Pirates were very violent and vicious as they would kill friends and foes alike, and their lack of camaraderie caused crew members to kill each other constantly, even while at sea. Because of the poor relationship with each other, the former Rocks Pirates members tend to downplay their time together to the rest of the world. Coupled with the World Government covering up their actions, the crew became relatively unknown to the next generation. Edward Newgate briefly described his time in the crew when talking to Kouzuki Oden. He said it was a group of people who were not the type to serve others, and that he had plenty of bad experiences there.

Crew Strength

The Rocks Pirates were an extremely powerful crew with amazing potential and were regarded as a threat to the entire world. They were without a doubt the strongest pirate crew of their time; three of their members later became Emperors, and the crew’s captain, Rocks D. Xebec, was widely considered the first and most formidable rival of the future Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Eventually, it took the combined strength of Roger and Monkey D. Garp to defeat them.

Ship

The crew had at least one ship with a dark colored sail, with the word “ROCKS” written on it in light colored letters, the “O” was designed to look like a burning skull, and it had a figure head of a corpse. In Kaidou’s flashback, the crew had a ship with dark colored sails except for the mizzenmast sail at the rear of the ship. The stern appears to be decorated as well, with three huge lanterns topped by the crew’s Jolly Roger protruding from the top. The ship’s design appears to be a fourth-rate ship-of-the-line with carrack rigging. During the God Valley Incident, the figurehead of the ship appeared similarly to a scarecrow featuring a dressed skeletal figure.

History

Formation And Adventures

Over 44 years ago, the crew was formed on Hachinosu, with Rocks D. Xebec as their captain. Joining them were three individuals who were already affiliated with Xebec at the time; Edward Newgate, Buckingham Stussy and Shiki. Other members included the self-made queen of Totto Land, Charlotte Linlin and her caretaker, Streusen; the apprentice, Kaidou; the Empress of Amazon Lily, Gloriosa; and other infamous individuals such as John, Gill Bastar, Ochoku and Silver Axe. Afterwards, they went on to become the strongest crew of their time, to the point of threatening the World Government itself.

Then, six years after the crew’s formation, they heard of the Native Hunting Competition that was taking place at God Valley and that powerful Devil Fruits were the prizes, so they traveled to the island to attack the World Nobles and their slaves in their search for the fruits. Linlin managed to obtain one of the fruits, the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, which she then gave to Kaidou, while the other fruit, the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi was eaten by the young buccaneer, Bartholomew Kuma. However, they also crossed paths with the Roger Pirates led by future Pirate King, Gol…

However, they also crossed paths with the Roger Pirates led by future Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and Marines led by Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, leading to a titanic battle that would be known as the God Valley Incident. During which, Roger and Garp were forced to work together to fight against the Rocks Pirates, resulting in the dissolution of the crew and the death of Rocks. Following the incident, news of the crew’s defeat by Garp reached Hachinosu, causing a panic among the residents. When Linlin returned to Hachinosu, she angrily voiced her frustration at not being able to find Kaidou.

Legacy

Due to Rocks D. Xebec’s quest for domination that led him to dabble in forbidden studies that the World Government had covered up, along with the crew’s lack of camaraderie which caused them to rarely speak of their time together, the Rocks Pirates became relatively unknown to younger generations, falling into obscurity in spite of their massive power. Through his involvement in defeating them, Garp earned the title of “Hero of the Marines”, while the knowledge of him teaming with Roger was also covered up. Five years after the crew had disbanded, the former members would go on to form their own crews. Three of them; Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin and Kaidou, went on to become Emperors until their downfalls. Newgate was murdered by Marshall D. Teach, Rocks’ own son, during the Summit War of Marineford and later claimed his title of Emperor during the Payback War. Two years after Newgate’s death, Kaidou was defeated by Monkey D. Luffy while Linlin was defeated by Luffy’s rivals Eustass Kid and Trafalgar D. Water Law. Ochoku returned to Hachinosu and took over as boss, until he was overthrown by Teach.

Trivia

  • This crew, along with the Donquixote Pirates and Gecko Pirates, are the only known crews named after their captain’s family name.
  • Before it was confirmed, Whitebeard and Miss Buckin had been implied to be members in the Vivre Card – One Piece Visual Dictionary.
  • While not shown, Zeus, a Homie who has accompanied Big Mom since childhood, was presumably a member of the crew like Prometheus and Napoleon.
  • Two of the members bear striking resemblances to zombies from Thriller Bark: one looks like Zombie 889 and the other one resembles the silver-armored general zombie armed with tekkō-kagi claws. However, it is currently unknown whether or not they are the same people.
