Trivia
Summary
In Japanese mythology, a giant catfish (or namazu) is said to live underground and cause earthquakes. In the 19th century, a known art genre called namazu-e often depicted the god Takemikazuchi riding atop the catfish to restrain it. Their names are likely derived from the Japanese poet Sugawara no Michizane. According to a legend, Michizane once used his sword to defeat a giant catfish blocking the road in Chikushino, which caused the catfish to turn into stone.
