Introduction

Layout Architecture And Locations

Alubarna is in the northeast part of Arabasta, built on a plateau near an oasis. It is located north of Nanohana and west of Tamarisk. Like several other cities in Arabasta, most of Alubarna’s structures follow the conventions of Islamic architecture, such as domed buildings and towers. Access to the city is done through five long flights of stairs located to the west, southwest, south, southeast and east. The southern gate is considered the main entrance, being the one Koza and his rebel army used to break into the city. The southeastern gate also features a group of ruins nearby, where Usopp and Tony Tony Chopper faced Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas.

Alubarna Palace

The Alubarna Palace (アルバーナ宮殿, Arubāna Kyūden?) is where the royal family and their servants live, located in the center of Alubarna. It boasts many luxuries, including a lush rooftop garden, a massive bathhouse, and secret passageways. During the Arabasta civil war, Princess Nefertari Vivi nearly detonated the palace in a last-ditch attempt to divert the combatants. Her efforts were easily thwarted by the war’s orchestrator Crocodile, who almost threw her to her death from the battlements. Shortly after, Crocodile and Monkey D….

During the Arabasta civil war, Princess Nefertari Vivi nearly detonated the palace in a last-ditch attempt to divert the combatants. Her efforts were easily thwarted by the war’s orchestrator Crocodile, who almost threw her to her death from the battlements. Shortly after, Crocodile and Monkey D. Luffy held their second battle on the rooftop garden, and the former eventually obliterated it with his Suna Suna abilities. After the war ended, the entire Straw Hat crew rested at the palace for several days before leaving Arabasta.

Medi Assembly Hall

The Medi Assembly Hall (メディ議事堂 , Medi Gijidō?) is located in the North Block, two great battles took place around it. In front of the hall Zoro won a battle against Mr. 1, while behind it, Nami managed to defeat Ms. Doublefinger. Not much else is known about it.

Polka Street

The Polka Street (ポルカ通り, Poruka Dōri?) is located in the South Block, it is the location where a fierce battle took place between Sanji and Mr. 2 Bon Clay, which Sanji eventually won. Not much else is known about this street.

Central City Square

Central City Square is a large, circular area where people can meet. It lies just outside of the Arabasta Palace. The first and final confrontation between the Rebel Army and the Royal Guards took place here, at the climax of the Arabasta Arc.

Alubarna Clocktower

The Alubarna Clocktower is an extremely tall clock tower building. The Sand-Sand Clan used this place as a secret base. There is a large open area at the very top of the tower and behind the clock’s face, which can only be accessed from a specific pair of stairs somewhere on the bottom floor. There are other stairs in the building that allow access to upper floors, but they do not lead to the clock tower proper. At the time, Crocodile planned to launch a bomb from there, due to the large open space and the close proximity to the Central City Square. The bomb was guarded by Mr. 7 and Miss Father’s Day, skilled Snipers who could shoot down anyone who came close to the tower.

Tomb Of The Kings

The Tomb of Kings is located west of the Alubarna Palace and is where the royalty of Arabasta are buried. There is also a hidden chamber containing Arabasta’s poneglyph, which presumably informs about the location of one of the Ancient Weapons, the warship Pluton. This is where Luffy and Crocodile had their third and final battle, with Luffy managing to blast Crocodile through Alubarna’s bedrock. The tomb ended up collapsing during the aftermath of the fight, presumably burying down everything inside.

History

Past

Alubarna is mentioned to be an ancient city, proven by the large quantity of ruins surrounding it. The royal Palace of Alubarna is said to predate the kingdom of Arabasta itself, having existed for around 4000 years. 800 years ago, the Nefertari royal family was one of the twenty royal families who founded the World Government. Notably, they were the only family to remain in rule of their own country, staying in Alubarna rather than moving to Mary Geoise and letting new royalty take over.

Planning Of Yuba

Thirteen years ago before the current timeline, Toto, a humble villager, and several others traveled to Arabasta for aid due to their village having dried up. Once there, Toto’s son, Koza, went to the palace and complained to the king why he did not do anything to prevent the fate of their village. Hearing what a rude thing his son did, Toto hurriedly rushed to the palace, preparing himself for any punishment. Instead of punishment however, Cobra told Toto that the country would temporarily guarantee the lives of the villagers that were hurt by the drought. Cobra then told Toto that he and other villagers would come temporarily live in Alubarna until a solution was found.

Toto, his family, and the rest of the villagers were provided support and lodging in Alubarna as promised until a solution to their problem could be found. While living there, Toto experienced how easily the royalty of Arabasta mingled with the common folk as he saw how Koza and Vivi become very good friends, and how even the king acted merely like a concerned father rather than some high and exalted official. Toto then witnessed more of this and how good the royalty was after an incident where Vivi was almost kidnapped and his son was injured in the process. Toto saw how Vivi was more afraid of losing her friend, Koza, than being kidnapped herself. After much planning with the king, Toto and Cobra had found a solution to his and his villagers problem. They decided that Toto and the other villagers would settle in an oasis found in western Arabasta. There, they planned to create a town called Yuba, which would be an intersection of great commerce as all sorts of merchants would come and go through it. With such a dream, Toto himself volunteered to spearhead the creation of the town. As Toto and the other villagers prepared to leave Alubarna to create the village, Toto shook hands with Cobra with a wish of good luck from his majesty. In response, Toto promised Cobra that he would create a superb town that would help the kingdom of Arabasta prosper.

The Dance Powder Conspiracy

Four to five years before the present storyline, a period of drought ensued, during which the entire country experienced a complete lack of rain, save for the city of Alubarna. Everyone thought the rain falling over the capital was a blessing of the king until some Dance Powder was discovered on its way into the city. The delivery men, who were actually Baroque Works agents in disguise, brought a large shipment of Dance Powder at Nanohana, staging an accident in which the cart broke apart and the sacks containing the Dance Powder ripped open and the Powder spilled out. The agents then lied that the king had ordered for the powder to be delivered to Alubarna, the city where it rained the most. They then fled leaving all those who witnessed the staged accident to doubt the king. Later, more Dance Powder was found planted in the royal palace, framing the king as the culprit behind the drought. Many knew the king would never do this, but the findings were enough to instill doubt in many younger citizens, particularly Koza, now a young adult. At some point, he traveled to Alubarna in order to question the king about the drought and the potential use of Dance Powder for the rest of the country. Not receiving a satisfactory answer, Koza declared to Cobra that he would join the rebellion and fight for the rain. Closer to present time, Vivi, suspecting that something wrong was afoot, infiltrated Baroque Works alongside the Arabasta Royal Army Captain Igaram in order to discover the true mastermind behind those incidents.

Drum Island Arc

By the events of the Drum Island Arc, the rebel forces had grown to be over twice as big as the country’s royal army, with hundreds of thousands of members of the latter having defected to the former.

Arabasta Arc

Alubarna is first seen with Cobra receiving reports of Crocodile supressing a pirate attack at Nanohana, to which he expresses his gratitude for the Warlord’s services. Later on, after receiving Vivi’s message (delivered by Karoo) and finally learning that Crocodile was the enemy all along, Cobra ordered the entire Alubarna forces to mobilize against the Warlord at Rainbase, at the dawn of the next day. Despite the protests of his head guards Chaka and Pell, Cobra remained resolute in his decision, since Crocodile’s threat was a bigger priority than his own safety.

Trivia

  • According to the official reference book “Rurubu One Piece”, Alubarna is inspired by the real-life Indian city of Jodhpur; the clocktower was based on Jodphur’s Ghanta Ghar. The city streets also took inspiration from Cairo in Egypt.
