Introduction

The Kuraigana Island is a dark and gloomy place somewhere in the Grand Line. It was once the home of the now fallen Shikkearu Kingdom (シッケアール王国, Shikkeāru Ōkoku?, English: “Muggy Kingdom”), as well as the ex-Warlord of the Sea Dracule Mihawk. Roronoa Zoro was sent here by Bartholomew Kuma following the Celestial Dragon Hit-and-Run Incident, and spent two years on the island honing his skills. Geography

Kuraigana Island is a densely forested island usually shrouded in fog beneath an overcast sky. The island also has several mountain-like hills with peaks that curl inward, with other structures visible around those hills. Almost all manmade structures on the island are in ruins, the most notable exception being the castle in the center of the island, built partially atop a small lake.

History

Past

Nine years before the current storyline, a terrible war was fought on this island. The Humandrills inhabiting the forest, gifted with the capability of learning from humans, watched the conflict, learned how to fight using weapons, and became fearsome fighters. At some point after the war’s end, Mihawk arrived on this island and made the castle his home. Four years before the current storyline, Kuma briefly travelled to this island in search for a cure for his daughter’s disease.

Thriller Bark Saga

Thriller Bark Arc

Perona was sent flying here by Kuma’s Nikyu Nikyu powers when she told him where she wanted to go if she went on a trip. Upon arrival, she settled in one of the ruins.

Summit War Saga

Straw Hat Separation

During the combat caused by Luffy punching St. Charlos, Kuma separated the Straw Hats, sending Roronoa Zoro to Kuraigana Island, where he met Perona.

Post-war Arc

After the Summit War of Marineford, Dracule Mihawk returned to his home on Kuraigana Island, where he found Zoro and Perona. Mihawk told Perona about Moria’s presumed death, and gave Zoro a little boat to return to his crew mates, later telling him about the island’s history…

After the Summit War of Marineford, Dracule Mihawk returned to his home on Kuraigana Island, where he found Zoro and Perona. Mihawk told Perona about Moria’s presumed death, and gave Zoro a little boat to return to his crew mates, later telling him about the island’s history and warning him about the Humandrills’ threat. However, Luffy hid a message to the Straw Hats in the newspaper before Zoro left the island, instructing them to train for the next two years; to fulfill the order, Zoro remained on Kuraigana Island, where he asked Mihawk to train him.

During The Timeskip

Zoro spent the next two years on Kuraigana Island, where he trained under Mihawk. Two years after he began his training, Zoro left the island, heading for the Sabaody Archipelago to meet with his crewmates.

Whole Cake Island Saga

From The Decks Of The World The 500000000 Man Arc

Eventually, Perona and Mihawk began to revitalize Kuraigana Island by tilling the battle-torn land. Seeing this, the violent Humandrills learned how to become peaceful and changed into friendly, helpful farmhands.

Wano Country Saga

Wano Country Arc

After the Levely, the island was surrounded by Marines as they prepared to arrest Mihawk, due to the abolishment of the Seven Warlords system. Due to the Marines’ nuisance and persistent attempts to arrest him at all costs, Mihawk decided to leave his home and relocate due to the pursuit, when he was contacted by Crocodile with an offer of partnership in a new company, leading them to take residence on Karai Bari Island.

Anime And Manga Differences

Originally in the manga, the Humandrills were simply hinted at with a silhouette in Zoro’s cover story. In the anime, they were given a slightly more detailed foreshadowing with them attacking Zoro in the ruins as ape-like silhouettes.

Trivia

  • The name “Kuraigana” translates roughly to “Gloomy, isn’t it?” in English.
  • “Shikkearu”, the name of the fallen kingdom, could roughly translate to “Oh, it’s damp”, in English.
  • The curly hills on the island resemble the iconic one from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, one of Eiichiro Oda’s favorite movies.
