Introduction

Sphinx is the island in the New World where Edward Newgate was born. It is currently under Marco’s protection. Geography

Sphinx is a relatively small island that has some ruins of an old town at the shore, but its inhabitants live in another town built by Whitebeard hidden in the valley of the mountains which can only be entered through a waterfall. Many Sphinxes live here as domesticated animals. The island has many coniferous trees and flowering shrubs, and the houses are small and have wooden roofs. The island with Whitebeard and Ace’s graves is nearby.

History

Past

At a certain point in the past, the World Government abandoned the island due to the poor residents’ inability to pay the Heavenly Tribute, causing the island to become a lawless place, deepening their poor status. 74 years ago, Edward Newgate was born on Sphinx. After setting out to sea and becoming the infamous Whitebeard, Newgate continued to care for his hometown and used his earnings from piracy to support the residents. Following the Payback War, the Whitebeard Pirates’ former first division commander Marco became the hidden village’s doctor to carry on his captain’s legacy and protect the residents from being attacked by those who are looking for Whitebeard’s alleged fortune.

Nekomamushi and his Guardians set out to find and recruit Marco and the rest of the Whitebeard Pirates to join the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance in their plan to free Wano Country from the Beasts Pirates, eventually arriving at Sphinx. Nekomamushi went to the hidden village and talked to Marco. After turning Nekomamushi down, placing his desire to protect the village above all, he asked him to pass on a message to Luffy in Wano. Nekomamushi and his Guardians set out to find and recruit Marco and the rest of the Whitebeard Pirates to join the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance in their plan to free Wano Country from the Beasts Pirates, eventually arriving at Sphinx. Nekomamushi went to the hidden village and talked to Marco. After turning Nekomamushi down, placing his desire to protect the village above all, he asked him to pass on a message to Luffy in Wano. Sometime after Marco had left to participate in the Raid on Onigashima, the Marines came led by Ratel to seize Whitebeard’s treasure. However, Whitebeard’s self-proclaimed son Edward Weevil fought them to protect Sphinx, forcing them to call in Admiral Ryukugyu, who defeated and captured Weevil.

Final Saga

Egghead Arc

After leaving Wano with the Red Hair Pirates, Marco had returned to Sphinx. He later found out from the residents on what happened and also met with Weevil’s mother Buckingham Stussy who demanded that Marco rescue him, claiming that Vegapunk can verify that Whitebeard is indeed Weevil’s father. A day later, the citizens and Marco listened to Vegapunk’s broadcast.
